An Unbreakable Connection with the Group

938.04Question: The group is outside of me. That means I depend on something external. How can I make it so that it depends on me, and not on something external?

Answer: What exactly is it that you decide here? You choose the group and convince yourself that it is great, good, important, and one of a kind. Then what it gives you naturally becomes important and significant to you. In other words, you must humble yourself before the group, and the group must “advertise” to you what is necessary.

Question: And if I break the connection even for a moment? Is that it?

Answer: If you sever the connection, you are an “animal.” After all, your only choice is the choice of the group.

Comment: You once said that it does not matter which group you come to. You can always be inspired by it if it maintains the direction.

My Response: I said that one can feel an inner response even from a small group because it depends more on how much you humble yourself before it. This is more important. The group may consist of beginners who know nothing but are very inspired and want something. Then you are inspired by their inspiration.

How does a mother become inspired by her infant? Does the infant have any kind of desire? Here love comes into action, the sense of importance. The infant is more important to her than her own life. That is how nature is arranged. Any of their sounds is the whole world for her, and she desires nothing more than to listen to them and fulfill what they want. So does the size of the infant matter? No, what matters are importance, love, and significance.

Question: And if this is not there?

Answer: If it is not, then there is nothing to be done. It means there is no group, and you are in your own hands, that is, in the hands of your nature.

Under the Influence of Society

939.02It is known that one is always among people who have no connection to the work on the path of truth, but to the contrary, always resist those who walk on the path of truth. And since people’s thoughts mingle, the views of those who oppose the path of truth permeate those with some desire to walk on the path of truth.

Hence, there is no other solution but to establish a separate society for themselves, to be their framework, meaning a separate community that does not mingle with other people whose views differ from that society. And they should constantly evoke in themselves the issue of the purpose of society, so they will not follow the majority, because following the majority is our nature (Rabash, “Concerning the Importance of Society“).

On the spiritual path, everything happens differently than in other areas of human activity because here I must change myself, in other words, extract myself from an egoistic nature, and enter a new one.

This means that I have no other choice but to deliberately create an appropriate environment around myself where spiritual goals and ideals are elevated as much as possible, developed, and made obligatory for everyone. In such a setting, I can learn from this society and absorb a stronger influence from it than from all of humanity, and most importantly, greater than from my own egoism. Only then will I be able to somehow change myself.

Question: Rabash writes that a person who is among people unrelated to the spiritual path gradually adopts their views. Is a person really that weak?

Answer: It is not that a person is weak; he is simply raw material that is shaped by society. Whatever environment he inhabits, his thoughts will inevitably reflect that environment.

Comment: Kabbalists are often accused of being insular. For some reason, they give everyone that impression.

My Response: They evoke antagonism in others because the Kabbalistic method runs counter to human nature. This can be seen in how humanity relates to Jewish people and senses the seed of Kabbalah within them, even though Jews themselves are not aware of it.

Therefore I remain unperturbed by the fact that I arouse hatred in many people. What can be done? We will have to wait until they correct themselves and understand that there is no other way. I hope that with today’s pace of development, this will happen quickly.

Creative Pressure

938.03Question: Are there instances when you, as a teacher, find yourself in dissonance with the group, and you tell the students: “You do not understand me,” and they respond that it is you who does not understand them? What does this achieve?

Answer: It leads to clarification of relationships. How could it be otherwise? That is how it must be. Nothing good comes from what is already “good”; it can only emerge from what is difficult or flawed.

Comment: So, as you put it, you need to put pressure on them, much like we put pressure on a child to help him or her develop.

My Response: It depends on what you mean by “pressure.” You must apply pressure creatively; only then will something emerge. You have to constantly introduce different exercises and small challenges, nothing too overwhelming, while offering help, providing explanations, giving gentle nudges, and continuously alternating between the left and right lines.

How else could it be? How do we play with children? Only in this way. They themselves insist on it.

Comment: But you constantly drive the group into a state of stress as you tell them that the whole world is suffering because of them. And they cry out: “So what are we supposed to do? Tell us!”

My Response: This is precisely how they will try to search for something. I cannot simply tell them what must be done, because the process is one of searching. If I just told them, it wouldn’t work; it wouldn’t be accepted, defined, felt, or truly internalized.

Question: But surely you know what needs to be done, don’t you? Do you have some kind of “vaccine” for this? Is it that you simply do not speak about it?

Answer: I have nothing of the sort. Do you think I am hiding something? Do you suppose that Kabbalah can simply be revealed to someone, and that is it? Through what sensations could it be revealed, if a person does not yet possess them? Through what?

Suppose you were supposed to start sensing radio waves. But you cannot. What can I do? If I were to lower radio waves to the level of the sound or light, levels that you can perceive, then you would see and feel them.

But in order to perceive the radio waves themselves, you must rise to that level, you need to develop some kind of sensor within yourself, a receiver that would perceive them.

Inspire One Another

524.01Comment: In the article “The Agenda of the Assembly,” Rabash emphasizes that each one, according to his abilities, speaks at the assembly about the importance of the group and about what it gives him in order to impress the others.

Answer: Everyone must inspire all the others by saying how proud he is to be in this group, how much he values it, and how great and important the group is in his eyes. To the extent that the Creator is important to a person, the means of attaining the Creator, that is, the group, is also important to him.

All this he must express in his own words and with it ignite the hearts of the friends. And the others must make an effort themselves to listen to what he says and connect with his feelings.

It is mutual work. On one hand, a friend must impress the others, and on the other hand, they must become inspired by him.

Question: What if he says the same thing for ten years?

Answer: It does not matter. Each time, the feelings are different.

From “The Unification Of Society” To The Revelation Of The Creator

On the Threshold of Unification

944Today we have approached a state where we can gather into one single unified whole. By doing this, we encompass the entire universe within ourselves; we begin to construct from within ourselves the model that really exists and to reveal the true model: the unification of human souls, which include the inanimate, vegetative, and animate parts of nature, and above all, the spiritual ones.

A person who begins to work with his friends in this manner draws closer to perceiving the universe as a single unified whole. Then, naturally, he sees all the worlds, including our own, interwoven and contained within one another.

He sees them permeated, integrated, and bound by a single force called the “Creator,” and amidst all of this, he sees himself existing eternally and ascending through the degrees of perfection. That is, he sees the universe in its true form, a reality not limited by our world, which is lost within this entire picture.

Therefore, the fact that we are approaching a state when my students can begin to work on the perception of reality described in the “Introduction to The Book of Zohar” is already a serious stage.

I hope that in the near future all the people who are with us to one degree or another, regardless of where they live, will be included in this picture of the perception of the world. This is liberation from egoistic shackles, from the limitations in which souls remain before contact with the spiritual, with the true creation.

This is the revolution in man, such is the most important moment of his existence, because after this, further revelation follows. He has entered into the sensation of the true volume, of the true universe, and that is all. And now there follow only 125 degrees of spiritual attainment.

Don’t Disconnect from the Connection with the Creator

221.0If I currently feel an attraction in a certain direction, my challenge is to ensure that in doing so, I do not lose the awareness that the evil inclination (a special force, a messenger) is working on me; it is a force that actually wants to direct me toward the Creator. Am I in sufficient connection with the Creator or, let us say, with the group, so that my friends can help me not to stray from the correct direction? The rest is internal clarification of a person.

The main thing is, if possible, not to allow yourself to disconnect from the connection with the Creator in each specific state. In this way, we, together with the evil inclination, are already performing work in the right direction. It pulls you in all possible directions, and against this background you remain connected with the Creator.

Question: By “connection,” is calculation implied?

Answer: There is a connection even when we are unable to make a calculation. It is enough to remain in connection. That is enough for now.

And the group should provide you with a sufficient awareness of the importance of constantly remaining connected with the Creator so that this sense of importance along with the fear of becoming disconnected truly gives you the strength to remain connected, in thought and adhesion despite all the disturbances, as you hold fast to the principle “there is none else besides Him.” These are not simple matters; they take years for a person to go through them.

The Point that Speaks to the Creator

940On the spiritual path, we need both ascents and descents. We must go through all these states, and preferably as quickly as possible. The speed we pass through them depends on our efforts, on how much we invest into work and study.

The group has a huge reserve of strength, and anyone who really wants to join it and earn the right to use its strength should try to connect with it as soon as possible through their work, studies, and the right intention. Then the realization of the greatness of the Creator, the exodus from Egypt, the importance of entering spirituality—the entire spiritual mindset he group possesses will pass onto him, and he, too, will earn the right to come out with everyone else.

For although Moses comes to Pharaoh and battles him, it is Moses alone who is connected to the Creator. A single point in the heart connects a person to the Creator, while the rest of the people do not understand what is happening at all because everything is done in the dark and in a hurry. Moses tells them, “Go and take the Kelim from the Egyptians, we will escape from here at midnight.”

The people simply listen and obey him, and by doing so, they merit being freed from bondage and getting out of Egypt. Therefore, we must understand that we do not need our entire physical being, down to the very bones, to strive to reach such a state; this is not yet Gmar Tikkun, but only the very beginning of the path.

Only one point in me speaks to the Creator during the exodus from Egypt, and all my other points, like the “people of Israel” in relation to Moses, only obey it.

Similarly, a person who is part of a group should annul to it so it can pull him out, and help him move along with it from the current state to a more elevated one.

Not to Burden, but to Awaken

938.05Comment: Suppose I feel good thanks to a Hisaron, a lack, that has revealed itself.

My Response: This means that you are consuming yourself. It is impossible to feel good because of a deficiency.

Question: But what if a person wants to remind the group of something that needs to be corrected?

Answer: This is not called revealing a lack. After all, the Kli and the light come as one whole. Therefore, if a question arises within the group regarding something that needs to be corrected now, it is permissible. But not in the form of vague generalizations that “we are lost, we do not see the path, we do not know how to get out of this state.” In other words, do not create obstacles, do not burden—awaken.

Both the Kelim and the lights are given to us from above. It is from there that we should receive both difficult and easy questions. But a person should not search for negative things beyond what is given to them from above. If they are not given to me, why should I descend lower? After all, I have the potential to ascend constantly!

If, however, a person drags themselves downward, this is a real Klipa, an impure force, that is operating on them. It is a peculiar Klipa; a person begins to revel in suffering and demonstrates to everyone how they, poor thing, suffer, so that all may see what a “hero” they are.

The Influence of the Group upon the Person

938.07Question: What should you do done in relation to the group in order to constantly maintain readiness for internal war, the inner struggle, and not surrender in it?

Answer: Not surrendering means not forgetting. Only the group can instill such an awareness of this importance to a person. To achieve this independently would cost him a great deal of suffering. It would have to practically engraved in his flesh. Moreover, it would take many years.

However, the group can raise this importance to such a degree that a person will remain constantly sensitive to it, will fear a break in connection, and, as Baal HaSulam writes, disconnecting from the Creator for a single moment will become the greatest punishment in the world for him.

How can I constantly be ready to maintain my connection with the Creator? If He is important to me, then I will maintain a connection with Him. The group has to constantly “drip” this awareness into me, both the group and me together.

Question: How can I establish a relationship between myself and the group, a bond, that will never be broken? After all, the ultimate goal is for me to remain constantly sensitive in my attitude toward the Creator.

Answer: It is not so much about your attitude toward the Creator, but in not disconnecting from Him. You must seek the means to remain as close as possible to that point of connection.

The means to achieve this is the realization of the importance of this state: being united with the Creator. Where does the awareness of importance come from? Experiment; there are a thousand and one factors involved. Perhaps you should read books about it, listen to music, attend lectures, and so on.

It is said that society exerts the greatest influence on a person. After all, books are a part of society. Anything that evokes a reaction within me, anything that originates not from within myself, but from outside, is defined as society. But what influences a person most is the opinion of the people immediately surrounding him. The group must be big enough, significant, and strong to truly instill this awareness deep within him.

Not Making Calculations for Your Own Benefit

942Question: What does it mean to annul oneself in our present state?

Answer: What does it mean to annul oneself before the group in our current state? Self-annulment means that you do not make calculations in your own favor. To the extent that you are capable of doing this, do it. This is called “in your state.”

Not making calculations in your own favor means that the benefit will not come directly to you.

Comment: By doing that, I am deceiving myself.

My Response: Deceiving yourself is not the problem. You do not intend to lie to yourself; you are trying as much as possible to make the correct calculation.

Question: What would be an example of me not making a calculation in my own benefit?

Answer: Acting for the sake of the group. Undoubtedly a benefit for oneself is hidden within in, but…

Baal HaSulam writes that people who do not dedicate themselves to the group, who do not invest their whole heart in it, and who do not work with complete self-sacrifice for its sake, are a burden to it. This raises the question: where is the group and where is the burden?

There are people now who can hardly be called a part of the group. There is a core within it that advances; it consists of those who truly want to be in the group. The rest come to study, to participate with a half or a quarter of their strength, to whatever extent. And this too is welcomed and is treated with special consideration. How many such people are there in the world?

Each person must make a calculation: do they truly want to belong to the advancing group? A person must assess how much they are investing in the group, because this, in essence, is their very advancement.
