Practical Scrutinizing

528.04Question: What metamorphoses occur between descents and ascents? What the does the transition from one state to another change?

Answer: Such transitions are possible only within a group.

You cannot possibly analyze, perceive, or measure this process, unless it is in relation to a group in which you, together with your friends, strive to unite as one and nullify yourselves relative to your common connection. Within this connection, you reveal the source, the upper force, that can transform you all and bring you to this connection.

In this way you truly are striving to reveal the picture, the state that actually exists. It is the only thing that exists.

All other notions, which are disconnected from this reality, such as: tell me, show me, explain it to me, are all mere philosophy detached from matter, and will invariably be misunderstood. Moreover, such thinking will lead you to believe that you can achieve this by yourself. Therefore, it is impossible to study Kabbalah without realizing the group connection with those who share this aspiration.

A person must traverse a vast number of stages, undergoing countess realizations, definitions, and analyses before becoming ready for this specific kind of uniting and transformation in order to simply stop perceiving oneself and to perceive the collective instead. At that point one will reveal that this collective is, in fact, one’s soul.

Question: How can we use our ascents and descents in a collective manner? How can we tune to that specific wavelength where everyone is striving in the same direction?

Answer: I have spoken about this at length, and now I do not want to repeat myself.

Question: Perhaps there is some subtle nuance that we are still missing?

Answer: Nothing is missing. Everything has been said thousands of times. You have it all. If you use it, you will find the correct model and yourself in it. If not, then no.

Comment: In essence, you have explained this system in great detail many times, but your students still constantly ask about the same thing. You give some explanations and uncover finer gradations.

My Response: It depends on their advancement. I cannot scrutinize it now with you. You do not understand that a Kabbalist can scrutinize only those things that he really senses in the course of a conversation.

Where Will the Force of Correction Come From?

144A covenant is defined as the process of separating ourselves from the vessels of reception, when we become similar to the properties of the Creator, GE, the vessels of bestowal. AHP deAliyah means that we try to extract the interaction between Malchut and Bina from the vessels of reception. This is similar to the AHP deBina that later prepares to influence Malchut.

If the AHP deBina possesses a power that it can transmit the entire light from above downward to Malchut , this means that the entire AHP deAliyah has been corrected. And after it has been corrected, GE and AHP deAliyah together can begin correcting Malchut itself.

But Malchut is not corrected through the making of a covenant or through the corrections performed by GE and AHP deAliyah as the property called “Israel.” Rather, it is corrected “in its own place.” A light comes from above and sanctifies Malchut as it is. As it is said: “The angel of death will become a holy angel.” And the pig will become holy, that is, kosher.

So what, will the laws of nature change? Will the pig suddenly lose the signs of an impure animal and become a ruminant like a cow? Naturally, such a thing cannot happen. The Creator does not change the original design. The laws of nature are constant and absolute.

AHP deAliyah will do its work and Malchut will be corrected in its own place. Thus, there will not be changes from the inclusion of Malchut in Bina; rather, the force of correction will come from Bina to Malchut. Then it will not be “Israel” that is corrected, but the nations of the world, and there will be no distinction between the future world and our world.

During correction, it is said that Israel has a share in the future world. Those who strive toward spirituality and are called “Israel” also have a share, but only a share in that state, in that place called the future world: in covenant with the Creator, in connection, in equivalence of form and adhesion with the Creator.

In the final correction, the future world will descend and become included within this world, and then not only Israel will have a share in the future world, but all created beings will possess that same state of adhesion with the Creator.

Strengthening on the Spiritual Path

940All our work is carried out only above reason. It is completely absent in the desire to receive. And although Kabbalah is called a science, this science is hidden. It does not stem from the nature of the desire to receive from which all our sciences are built: physics, chemistry, electronics, even psychology (although that is not entirely a science).

But what conclusion can be drawn from all this? No matter how much research we conduct, no matter how much we develop these sciences, they do not change us. We gain no real benefit from them.

Question: So, what does our “strengthening on the path” before the breakthrough consist of? To come to a state above reason?

Answer: Above reason means to receive advice from the Creator, to become included in Him and not in the desire to receive.

If while being within the desire to receive, I imagine some other state, which I call, say, the desire to bestow, it is still the same desire to receive. So, what is to be done? I must receive from the Creator something that does not exist within the desire to receive.

The sages say that all that remains is to carry out the preparation called “strengthening.” I must work with other people who are outside of me, egoistically, and then I will begin to discover that there is a great difference between my attitude toward them and my attitude toward myself. From the recognition of this difference, I will begin to understand who I am.

I have a “laboratory” in this world located within the desire to receive. In our nature, thanks to the shattering of the common soul, a unique possibility exists to see from within the desire to receive an analogy to the kind of difference that exists between the spiritual and material worlds.

It is said that the same opposition that exists between the material world and the spiritual world also exists in your attitude toward yourself and toward others. It is astonishing that within your egoism, you can see this and learn from it.

Nevertheless, if you study this egoistically, then it is psychology: how good I am, how polite I am, and so on. It becomes the kind of thing people like to take pride in: how noble-hearted they are.

But if you study this with the aim of somehow imagining your attitude toward spirituality, toward the Creator, then, as a result of the connection between the branch and the root, there appears within you a certain feeling called the point of recognition of evil.

From this point, you gradually begin striving toward adhesion with the Creator, as Baal HaSulam says: “I am lovesick.” But this comes only from the recognition of your attitude toward the friend.

What can strengthen us in this? The relationship between “I” and the Creator, “I” and divinity.

Question: But is this not concealed?

Answer: It is not concealed. Before my eyes stands a real friend. But if I accept him, then I work with him in order to find the point of my relation to the upper one. Otherwise, I have no other place for work. The reality surrounding me becomes as if a laboratory.

Accelerate the Action of the Program

526When all of us, “as one man with one heart,” move toward the goal, and the group has truly prepared itself for such a state, this immediately leads to the receiving of the Torah. Naturally, before this there must be recognition of evil. Although recognition of evil will continue afterward as well, from that point the spiritual degrees begin.

A program called the desire to receive is embedded within us. What can we do? We can only accelerate its action. The program is already present; that is, egoism itself is already a program. We only need to set its frequency, like in a computer.

This is all that we must do in our work. We need additional speed, through which we move from the path of suffering to the path of Torah. It is precisely this speed that we attain. And the larger the group, the better. As it is said: “In the multitude of the people is the King’s glory.”

As a rule, egoism works within us according to the system of values of “for one’s own benefit and for reward.” I myself do not change my program. But if I see that spiritual pleasures are more important than material ones, then I understand that I need spirituality, though this may take more time.

Suppose I am sitting in front of a computer, and I must type something. My problem is simply to press the keys. Therefore, either I must initially wish to acquire some force that will help me press the keys, or I will be pushed from behind by blows—just as, for example, my mother used to shout at me when I was a child and I did not want to do something, and then I would begin doing it with increasing speed.

That is, I cannot escape this path. I will still have to press those keys. It is simply that if a person is foolish, they go by the path of suffering. But I will never be able to press a key without recognizing that it is important, that it is good. Even if no one compelled me toward such an action, I myself would eventually come to feel that it is necessary.

Submit to the Group

963.7Pharaoh (Paro) stands opposed to the Creator, he resists Him. Moses, the point in the heart within us, stands between them. The dispute between Pharaoh and the Creator is conducted through the point in the heart. All our other desires should simply obey it. In the same way, a person must obey the group.

Therefore it is said that on the day of the exodus from Egypt, “You became My people.” And before that, there was no such thing as the people of Israel.

This outcome, the acquisition of a screen, occurs inside a person when he receives correction due to the influence of the upper light on him. During the exodus from Egypt, the light GAR deHochma comes.

Only with such a strong light can the Kelim be prepared to exit from the desire to receive, which is called the passage of the Final Sea (Red Sea).

This can only be done through unity. Many friends come together, unite, become a “people,” that is, one single vessel, a Kli, and then the light comes from above that can lead us out of Egypt.

Therefore, love between friends, unity, and the capacity to yield to each other are absolutely necessary. The indispensable condition is that the desire of each individual must merge with the desires of all the others to create a common desire that corresponds to the state of Passover (Pesach).

We belittle and subdue our material egoistic desires; we cast aside all our petty calculations with each other, single out, and we isolate and connect only our desire for spirituality. We unite all our points in the hearts so that they form one common Kli, which will be sufficient to truly pull us out of the bondage of selfishness and to merit the light of correction coming from above.

When leaving Egypt, all the work that a person has done over the many years of the preparation period comes together, and its results are summed up. Therefore, we must unite and achieve the necessary measure. And if we can do this, then the lights of Passover, both materially and spiritually, will influence us so that we will actually be worthy to approach spirituality.

Mutual Influence in the Group

938.02The greatness of the Creator and His glory—which we constantly talk about in the group, and thereby elevate Him—is in fact a means by which a person, based on constantly turning to his inner self, begins to turn to the Creator.

This can be seen even in simple examples. You came here at three o’clock in the morning, you could care less about anything, and you are still half-asleep. The most that you can think of is feeling better. Let’s say that you are not in a good state, that you feel low, and that you have no interest in anything.

There is nothing you can do; you have already come here, you are listening to the lesson, and you are catching all sorts of words and conversations of your friends. You observe that they think differently, that they are in high spiritus, and this starts to inspire you.

When you are inspired, a certain shift, whether you intend it or not, takes place within you regarding your attitude toward life and the purpose of life; as a result, you become capable of exerting some effort. You can say, “Yes, I am making efforts, but they are all based on the elation that I got from the group. Had I not come here, had I not sat here listening to all kinds of things, I would not be inspired. But now I am in a great mood.”

True. But you have already paid for it by coming here. After all, everyone is just like you, and everyone who comes here affects the others in some way. Then, in fact, if you influence everyone so that everyone influences you in some way, and all the benefits from this will be yours.

You are not running on someone else’s fuel, you are running on your own fuel. Then you fulfill another law, another condition, despite the fact that you do not see the goal or the Creator. However, you already understand that it is good that you do not see Him because it does not tempt you to enjoy seeing the Creator for your own sake.

It is good that the Creator is hidden, and that you can get a push toward Him from the group, rather than from Him directly. After all, had you received an impulse directly from the Creator, you would instantly fall into pleasure for your own sake: “Look who I have a connection with! Look who is giving to me! Look at me!” The fact that I receive a push from the group toward the Creator supposedly frees me from the problem of making the first restriction on my Kelim while still obeying the law.

Therefore this work is called the preparation period. Because I have started work and I have made a certain number of efforts, efforts that I must go through according to the root of my soul, I reach a state where I am given a Masach (screen). Then I merit the revelation of the Creator, and to receive forces from Him.

When I see the Creator, I am able to selectively accept, not pleasure, but only the strength to get closer to Him. From the light that comes from Him, I will take what I need to correct my Kelim, but will not use Him to fill them. After I correct these Kelim, I will fill them in order to get even closer to the Creator, to become even more like Him. This is how a person ascends the spiritual ladder and moves from law to judgment.

938.04Question: You say that only from unity, from connection, can anything of real value come. People ask you: “What is unity? What is connection?” You seem to explain it, but you do not answer the question directly.

Answer: How is that? I answer directly! I perceive unity clearly; I am in it right now! From this state, the closest one to you, I explain what it means.

But there is a difference between the very first, the lowest state of connection, of mutual guarantee, and the one in which you are.

If I cross this barrier toward you, then I will be like you and will not be able to explain anything. I descend from the degree I am on to the very lowest spiritual degree, and from it, I try to explain to you, who are still lower, what this lowest spiritual degree is. I cannot descend any lower.

Question: What must happen for us to hear you?

Answer: You must generate a profound desire to experience unity.

Question: You speak about mutual guarantee, the power of unity, connection, and all this is, in principle, seems to circle around the same thing, perhaps with slightly different nuances. Recently, you said something concrete: “Think in this specific way and act in that particular way.” That resonates more clearly with people. But will this really work in practice? These things like: smile at each other and treat each other with kindness?

Answer: It depends entirely on your implementation and on nothing else, absolutely nothing else!

You must want it! You must want it a little bit more. And this “wanting it a little bit more” can be achieved through mutual assistance. It is precisely within that small added increment, within the mutual help that you can give each other, that you will attain the shared sensation of mutual guarantee in which the Creator will be revealed.

I explain everything in terms that are absolutely accessible! All that is required is to actually do it. At the very least to start, but I do not see any starting taking place.

Question: So how does one go about starting?

Answer: You need to map out all these actions in writing.

How is any business enterprise built? It begins with general plans and discussions, followed by more concrete details. Then come the development phases, various forms of research, an analysis of the dependencies involved, and so on. But the crucial step to is commence the serious work.

Question: Suppose everyone gathers together and, as it often happens at conventions, feels an intense collective desire for this to happen, will it actually happen?

Answer: Yes, it can happen at a convention, but it is a temporary state, a fleeting desire. Consequently what you will experience is a temporary sensation, a momentary illumination or revelation, rather than a permanent one.

To attain something permanent, you must engage in work, you must cultivate a constant desire within yourself, an aspiration that continuously accumulates. It builds up steadily until it becomes palpable, firm, and deeply ingrained within your very being.

The Spiritual Path Is a Path of Feelings

938.01The group should always provide me with the strength on the path toward the goals I have chosen to achieve.

I have to be constantly told: “Listen, we are going to tell you something now! There are people among us who have already achieved this, and you know, it is so wonderful, so marvelous!” And then, believe me, everyone will run there, and we will all achieve this together.

I have the opportunity to measure the extent to which my goal corresponds to the Creator. At every level, there are states where you feel that you are more connected with Him. In addition, if I cannot become aware of myself in relation to the goal, then I can become aware of my growing egoism within me or some other negative states. This is also a preparation, part of our path.

If I do not pay attention to my feelings, whether I feel good or bad, but I examine them as some kind of outside observer, then I can say whether I am actually advancing or not, no matter whether these things are negative or positive.

The problem is that the spiritual path is a path of feelings, and feelings shut off the mind. A person can only say that he feels bad, and that is all. But this is not a test, not a measurement, not research. No matter how smart he is, if you take away two hundred grams of pleasure from him now, he, despite all his wisdom, will not be able to do anything. So the problem is not in measuring how much our goal corresponds to the Creator, but in being able to accomplish it.

Equality Lies in Unity

938.05Question: You claim that we are not equal to one another and that our only equality lies in the fact that we belong to a system governed by a single force. Does it follow that equality is achieved only through adhering to this system?

Answer: Equality is achieved through our unification with one another, with the help of the upper force. If, on the earthly level, we try to artificially impose equality, we end up with such distorted forms of communism and violence that the result is nothing but terrible hatred and fragmentation, a scattering in all directions.

But when we strive to unite through the upper force, we will truly attain unity that will connect and elevate us. Then, within our shared desire, each of us will feel the Creator.

If You Unite…

938.07Comment: When you disseminate Kabbalah to the masses, what attracts people is your inner message.

My Response: This happens because I have this energy. People sense that there is an upper force in me. They perceive it, even if just slightly, and sense that knowledge, confidence, and inner light.

I am not boasting about it, but I also do not hide that they really sense all of this. In many, it provokes hatred; in others, respect, approval, or admiration. It makes no difference. The main thing is that it exists, and it is not merely the spark of a brilliant orator; after all, I do not speak Hebrew particularly well, and my manner is generally somewhat rough, with a strange, often off-putting sense of humor.

I craft my statements quite deliberately, even pointedly, specifically to shake a person up and make them feel uncomfortable to prompt them to engage their critical left line a bit. People simply recognize there is a profound logic here, not mine, of course.

By the way, by nature I am practically without any innate talents. The only thing speaking through me is what I have attained from my great teacher. Through my connection with him, I pass on to you what he receives from his teacher, and further, through the entire chain of Kabbalists.

I have simply been privileged to serve as a conduit, to “pour,” so to speak, information from myself into the common Kli. To the extent that you unite with one another, I am able to pour all of this into you.

Whether I am here or not does not matter. The absence of visual contact serves to give you the opportunity for even greater freedom of choice to unite with one another. If I am no longer present, it will simply mean that you have been granted an even greater measure of freedom of will, even greater responsibility to unite. And when you can do this, you will receive even more from me, just as I receive much more from my teacher than when he was physically next to me.

It is said that the righteous live more in their death than in their life. And therefore there is no difference whether I exist now or will not exist in your eyes. If you unite among yourselves, you will feel a spiritual abundance pouring into you, specifically from me, in an even greater measure.

When you are ready for the stage of uniting with one another, without me in greater freedom of choice, since there will no longer be my pressure or direct guidance, and you are able to bring this to fruition, then I will depart. From that point on, it will be entirely up to you whether you succeed in realizing this or not.

Question: Do you think that those external circles we are currently disseminating information to will continue to be drawn to this in the same way?

Answer: This depends on the extent to which you become a magnetic force, how much inner strength you possess (the kind I currently hold), and on your capacity serve as a source of that strength for all of humanity. If you remain in contact with me and allow this force to flow into you through me, you will begin to attract all of humanity. But all this must happen collectively, as a single, unified entity.

Question: Is it possible that we might fail to become a unified whole?

Answer: In that case the obligation would be shifted away from you and placed upon some other group; alternatively you could be compelled toward this unity through the path of suffering. You will be made to unite regardless, because this is the natural trajectory of evolution, the inevitable path leading to the revelation of that system, that state that exists in the world of infinity.
