Governments Should Reduce Inequality

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Kenneth Rogoff, Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics at Harvard University): “There’s little doubt that globalization and technological innovation are the driving forces behind rising inequality, Rogoff said in a panel discussion on income inequality and role of money in politics. So for the stability of the system, ‘government policy should mitigate the effects of this big change that technology and globalization is achieving and not exacerbate them.’”

My Comment: This is possible only by becoming aware of the necessity to rise to the next level of human development. It is possible to reach the awareness of the need either under the influence of great suffering or with strong dissemination of the method of integral education and upbringing, or both of them together.

Crisis: Not Hitting Mystics!

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from The Local): “The economic crisis has prompted a rise in the number of Italians seeking help from fortune tellers, in turn helping their fortunes to boom, according to figures from Italy’s consumer association, Codacons.

“Fortune tellers and psychics seem to be among the lucky few people benefiting from Italy’s economic crisis, raking in an estimated €8.3 billion from the black economy during the first six months of 2013 alone as an increasing number of Italians call on them for assurance in times of need, according to the Codacons report.

“An estimated 13 million people sought help from psychics and a myriad of other ‘occult’ specialists in 2013, a rise of one million since 2011.

“They pay anything between €50 and €1,000 for a consultation – mostly in cash – but also through ‘payments in kind’, such as with food or jewelry, which is later sold.

“The reasons behind it range from a job loss and matters of the heart to health concerns and fear about the future.

“Many are business executives or entrepreneurs seeking guidance on how to navigate the economic crisis, Codacons said.

“An estimated 160,000 people work in Italy’s ‘occult’ sector, including fortune tellers, psychics, magicians and spiritualists.”

My Comment: That’s how people in the 21st century remain the same as the “ancient” thousands of years ago. They have not changed themselves; only their external, mechanical world has changed. We can overcome barbarism only through rising to a new level of values: from the animal (I, for myself) to the spiritual (we, for us), in which the next stage of civilization is revealed. And this is still ahead of us.

There Are No Enemies, Only Partners

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Book The Tree of Life,” Item 3: When the generations have lessened and their sages themselves had started to crave both tables, meaning a good life for their corporeality, too, their views drew near to the masses.

The desire to enjoy was constantly growing, a meter was continuously turning inside, increasing its temperature more and more, until the desire to enjoy flamed up completely. Greater and greater Reshimot were becoming revealed. And that’s why scientists, who used to be idealists and only wanted pure science, as it was until the end of the Middle Ages, suddenly reached out for wealth and praise; they wanted Nobel prizes. This is how they started to sell their science.

And besides, research demanded so much material resources, such great investment, that scientists didn’t have so much money and were forced to sell themselves to the ruling circles, the mighty of this world. It became possible to approach a chemist and order a new drug, stronger than any existing ones.

And the scientists had no choice but to fulfill the orders–this is something that didn’t happen before. First of all, a scientist didn’t need money and was drawn to pure science. Secondly, the clients weren’t that corrupt, ready to destroy the entire world for their profit. That’s how the world has changed and the generations have lessened.

We see today that people need science to get control over others and earn money. Science is not used for the sake of pure science; no one takes interest in this any longer. Nobody would give a penny for pure science, and no one is engaged in it any more.

Scientists are engaged in applied disciplines that can bring real financial profit and as soon as possible. Therefore, thanks to science we reveal that we are slaves of the evil inclination. But for now, only Kabbalists realize this, while those who control scientists pay those whom it’s worthwhile to pay and utilize science only for the sake of profit.

Egoistic desire develops not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively. And now we starting to realize that the entire problem is our egoism that rules over us. Some 50 years ago we didn’t think so. We conquered space, dreamed of trips to other planets and stars, and were proud of humanity’s great achievements.

Then disappointment came, and in our days all the programs in general fell to the ground. The example of today’s conflict in Ukraine, that Russia and Europe found themselves involved into, shows how everyone is dependent on each other. It’s unclear what to do, how to influence each other, since all systems begin to stall.

How can one apply any sanctions if everyone is connected to each other? One state would like to cut itself down from the other, but cannot. Everyone is tied by mutual responsibility, bad connections, and can’t do anything about it. Ultimately, complete chaos and mess begin. They start to realize that it’s impossible to do anything against each other.

If Europe refuses to receive oil and gas from Russia, how will it subsist? And if Ukraine ceases to supply foodstuffs to Russia, who will lose more? The connection is so strong that it’s impossible to cut it off. One depends on the other because it receives from it, and vice versa. Is it possible to fight under such conditions? Only wag a finger and go home?

That’s the result of the development of science thanks to which we acquired dreadful weapons and tied ourselves through international trade.

Question: So it follows that we have rolled back to the cold war?

Answer: This is not the cold war—it’s no longer possible. The cold war means applying all sanctions but firing at each other. But now it’s also impossible. Even sending a spy and exposing an enemy is pointless because if we are so interconnected, we won’t be able to do anything anyway. It’s the same as to install a video camera and spy and listen to yourself.

We we are tied together, you are not an enemy any more, but a partner. I receive foodstuffs from you, while you oil and gas from me, and we can’t make it without each other. What difference it will make if we denounce one another? If I depend on you, then on the contrary, it’s in my own interest that you strengthen your weak spots. Say, Russia will reveal some weak spots in European industry, but it’s not interested at all in harming, rather in fixing these shortcomings.

Indeed, if European industry stops, to whom will Russia sell its oil and gas? And without these sales, it won’t have money itself. Do you see where our mutual dependency leads us to? This is why so many different alliances are made, for everybody depends on each other. Only the exploding egoism prevents them from understanding this entire dependency till the end. And all of it is the consequence of modern science.

“Marijuana Industry Job Fair Draws A Crowd In Denver”

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Reuters): “In Colorado- the state’s first marijuana industry job fair. There were lines before the doors even opened. Fifteen marijuana-related companies are looking to fill jobs ranging from accounting to actually growing the plant.

“A job hunter says: ‘It would be nice to be a budtender, but whatever they want to throw at me, and get my foot in the door.’ The fair brought in job hunters from many different fields. …

“Luke Ramirez, marijuana dispensary owner, saying: ‘Our sales have increased 300%. Our traffic through our stores has increased by the same number. That’s why we’re here today. We need to hire more folks to help out with that traffic added revenues.” While the requirements vary from job to job, industry recruiters say all applicants must be at least 21-years-old.’”

My Comment: But how much will we have to spend on the undesirable consequences of drug use: ruined health, increased crime, broken families, etc.?

In Europe, 13% Of All Young People Are Neither Employed Nor Study

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from World Socialist Web Site): “In the European countries, 12.7 percent of all young people are neither employed nor in education or training, a rate 2 percentage points higher than before the crisis. The ILO report notes: ‘The crisis has dramatically diminished the labor market prospects for young people, as many experience long-term unemployment right from the start of their labor market entry, a situation that was never observed during earlier cyclical downturns.’

“’Social protection is both a human right and sound economic policy. Social security enables access to health care, education and nutrition. Well-designed social protection systems support incomes and domestic consumption, build human capital, and increase productivity. Yet over 76 per cent of the world’s population continues to live without adequate health and social protection coverage.’ …

“’As a result, we are faced with a deep social crisis, a crisis too of social justice. Disturbing – and rising levels of inequality – in advanced and developing economies are widely acknowledged as cause for great concern. Today the wealth of the top one per cent of the global population equals that of the poorest 3.5 billion people.’“ Source: International Labour Organization

My Comment: Governments will have no choice but to provide the entire population, employed and unemployed, with essential goods and services. But it will not eliminate the degradation of the population, and maybe then the need for integral education and upbringing will be realized. Otherwise, there will be confrontations, pushing towards civil or international war.

The Land Of The Dependent And Weak-Willed

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the news (from the American Dream): “The American people are the most drugged people in the history of the planet. Illegal drugs get most of the headlines, but the truth is that the number of Americans that are addicted to legal drugs is far greater than the number of Americans that are addicted to illegal drugs. As you will see below, close to 70 percent of all Americans are currently on at least one prescription drug. In addition, there are 60 million Americans that ‘abuse alcohol’ and 22 million Americans that use illegal drugs. What that means is that almost everyone that you meet is going to be onsomething. …

“That sounds absolutely crazy but it is true. We are literally being drugged out of our minds. In fact, as you will read about below, there are 70 million Americans that are taking ‘mind-altering drugs’ right now. If it seems like most people cannot think clearly these days, it is because they can’t. We love our legal drugs and it is getting worse with each passing year. And considering the fact that big corporations are making tens of billions of dollars peddling their drugs to the rest of us, don’t expect things to change any time soon.”

My Comment: This condition is spreading around the world, in the favor of the ruling circles: it is easier to control a weak-willed and dependent population. People need to go through the lowest point of the fall, the recognition of evil, and only then will they be willing to change themselves. Then they will be able to hear about the existence of the method of integral education.

The Rise And Fall Of Democracy

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Ivan Krastev, chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia, permanent fellow at the IWM Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna, the author of In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don’t Trust Our Leaders?): “The paradox of the modern world is that the democratization of society has ironically led to voters’ loss of power and the rise of social inequality while globalization liberated the elites but deprived them of legitimacy and capacity to govern.

“Today elected governments run the majority of states in the world. … Democratic ideal reigns uncontested and the will of the people expressed in free and fair elections is accepted to be the only real source of legitimate power. In the 21st century democracy has dispensed with most of its critics but, unfortunately, none of its internal contradictions.

“Democratic ideal reigns uncontested and the will of the people expressed in free and fair elections is accepted to be the only real source of legitimate power. … democracy and good governance can coexist only under a regime of limited suffrage. In their view the real sovereign is not the people, but reason. So, voting should be discussed in terms of capacities rather than rights. In the 19th century, capacity was translated as property or education; only those with the right education or enough property could be entrusted with the power to vote. …

“While we all agree that democracy means we should be able to influence decisions which affect us, in reality this is not the case. We are frequently consumers of decisions made by governments we have not elected. In a globalized world we depend more than ever on the decisions of others, those who never were and never will be part of our community. And therefore there is a natural urge to make sure that those others do not make the wrong choices. Truth be told, democracy was never that great at preventing people from making mistakes. …

“So, instead of choosing between sovereign democracy, globalized democracy, or globalization-friendly authoritarianism, political elites try to redefine democracy and sovereignty in order to make the impossible possible. The outcome is democracies without choices, sovereignty without meaning, and globalization without legitimacy. …

“While democracy treats individuals as equal (every adult has an equal vote), free enterprise empowers individuals on the basis of how much economic value they create and how much property they own. … Voters can decide who will be in government – their votes still ‘choose’ the winning party, while markets decide what will be the economic policy of the government, irrespective of who wins the elections. …

“The problem is that this unstoppable spread of democracy has both destroyed the borders between the different spheres of human activity – those which should be run by vote and those which should be run by professional competence, and at the same time de-legitimized the popular elected democratic institutions. …

“The logical consequences of such attitudes are, on the one hand, the secular trend of decline of electoral turnout in most Western democracies, and on the other hand, the tendency where people least likely to vote are the poor, unemployed, and the youth, in short those who in theory should be most interested in using the political system to change their lot.

“So, the paradoxical outcome of the expansion of democratic principle of self-governance outside of the political realm is that now that we vote on everything, the political power of the voter has declined. …

“In the days of national democracies, the citizen voter was powerful because he was at the same time a citizen-soldier, citizen-worker, and citizen-consumer. The citizen-soldier was important because the defense of the country depended on his courage to stand against the enemies. The citizen-worker was important because his work was making the country rich. And the citizen-consumer mattered because his consumption was driving the economy. But when drones and professional armies replace the citizen-soldier, one of the major motives of the elite’s interest in public welfare is substantially weakened. The flooding of the labor market by low-cost immigrants as well as outsourced production have also reduced elites’ willingness to take into account citizens’ interests and opinions. The fact that over the course of the recent economic crisis it became evident that the performance of the U.S. stock market no longer depended on the consumer power of the Americans is one more argument why citizens are losing their leverage over the ruling groups. It is the decline of the leverage of the citizen-soldier, the citizen-consumer, and the citizen-worker that explains voters’ loss of power but also the growing ungovernability of modern democracies.”

My Comment: People’s participation today means thousands of demonstrators on the streets who reject government decisions. In the future, the quality of governing will be determined by the opportunity to turn protest movements into coherent positive demands and structured political force. This will be possible through the implementation of integral education for the masses. In this case, they will be able to realize the changes that must be made in society.

The Butterfly Effect

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (S. Islamov, Ph.D.): “Everyone knows what the water cycle is: Water evaporates from the surface of the earth and seas and rises into the lower atmosphere, where it accumulates into clouds and upon reaching a certain concentration of water vapor in the clouds, droplets begin to form and then merge, and then moisture falls in the form of rain or snow back to earth.

“Beginning in the last century, humanity brings more disturbances in the work of this mechanism, and the problem is not in carbon dioxide, which is considered the producer of the greenhouse effect, but in plain water. There was a rapid increase in the combustion of natural gas, and by burning it, we take oxygen from the atmosphere and contribute carbon dioxide and water. Two billion tons of water is thrown into the atmosphere annually.

“Consequently, the system of the water cycle responds even to a relatively small impact – this is called the “butterfly effect.”

My Comment: So, floods in Europe will only become more frequent as long as humanity is not able to reduce energy consumption and hence the volume of fossil-fuel combustion. Therefore, the process of extreme climate change will continue until we come to our senses under the influence of integral education and reduce our consumption to a reasonable level.

Empty Homes

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from The Guardian): “More than 11m homes lie empty across Europe – enough to house all of the continent’s homeless twice over – according to figures collated by the Guardian from across the EU. …

“Many of the empty Spanish properties were repossessed by banks after owners defaulted on mortgages….

“Housing campaigners said the “incredible number” of homes lying empty while millions of poor people were crying out for shelter was a ‘shocking waste.’

My Comment: There is a similar condition in the United States. All this leads to a revolutionary explosion; people will demand the essential conditions for existence. The method of integral education calls to satisfy the requirements necessary for existence—in exchange for including everyone in the mandatory system of integral education.

When The Minority Influence The Majority

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Karen Shahinian, journalist Slon): “We accept the opinion of majority as the truth, believe public opinion more than our own eyes because it is uncomfortable to be at odds with the majority. No matter what the majority tells us, it is important not to differ.

“Let’s say, there are only 10,000 people on a small square, and a huge silent country is around – the revolutionary minority has its own influence; it is not overwhelmed by the majority; it is important what the minority says.

“We have to comply with the opinion of majority, but not with the opinion of minority, but we listen to it attentively, trying to understand why they think differently, and this is the hidden power and influence of minority. Since we are not afraid of them, they are not dangerous, we begin to listen to them and think about the content.

“At the beginning, the influence of the minority does not appear, but time passes, and a serious question arises: perhaps, it is really necessary to stand up to the end and not to leave the square? Of course, if the opinion of minority was correct, and it was worthwhile to stay. It all depends on the unity of minority and its perseverance to articulate their ideas.

“At this moment, propaganda begins to divert from the content and to criticize the quality of the representatives of minority, to discredit them. This works because when a person thinks, he becomes nervous – and he is happy to hear the simple explanation of propaganda. The main and only weapon of the minority is persistence, not to stop to broadcast their ideas.

“From the point of view of biology, to differ from the majority is a mistake; if everyone behaves in a certain way, it means that it is the only correct way, and those who acted differently were eaten.

“The term “the wisdom of the crowd” means that the average response of the crowd is the most accurate and correct because everyone makes a mistake around the truth, and the average opinion is as close as possible to the truth. But this rule works only if the crowd is not biased, in a stable environment, when the circumstances are clear. But when everything is changing and insecure, the majority becomes confused, and the minority have a chance to influence by their idea.

“If the opinion of minority is not fiction, but the truth, it will be viable and gradually spread to the majority and become the norm. As soon as the economy falls and stability is disturbed, the majority will be disoriented and ready to accept new ideas.”

My Comment: In our case, it is necessary to add the influence of Ohr Makif, which, to the extent of our preparedness to re-educate the masses, will organize the conditions necessary for the correction of society.
