We All Are One Soul, Part 1

laitman_264_01

Life Is the Result of Connection

Question: You say that all of us are connected in a single network; all of us are like one big soul. Today this subject is of concern to many in the world; there is lots of information and many articles about studies on this subject on the Internet. People sense that all of us are parts of one big system. Are we truly parts of a single soul?

Answer: We all are one soul. A soul is a tremendous desire to live, to exist, inherent in all levels of nature. In inanimate nature all atoms and molecules want to exist, to maintain their connection. In order to destroy a compound, energy, heat, or pressure must be applied.

After all, every part of nature seeks to protect itself. This instinct of self-preservation is called the desire to receive, to enjoy, taking care of oneself. To the degree of their development, all kinds of substances connect together, increasing the quantity of components that are included in connection, and then the quality. This is how life evolves on Earth.

Gradually, from amoebas and primitive organisms, all of the complex organisms evolved that lived first in the water and after that emerged on dry land.

We see that all of life comes from the union of parts; it is specifically their connection that produces quantitative and qualitative development on a higher and higher level, until reaching the human. The physiological human body is composed of an immense quantity of components.

But in addition, it has the unique ability of perceiving the world intellectually and emotionally, which is what we call the human mind and heart.

Through the mind and the heart, a person goes beyond the limits of his body, wanting to attain what doesn’t belong to our three -dimensional measurement; he aspires to go out to tremendous distances, going into space, implementing a leap in time and space.

And all of this is thanks to the inner human spirit whose complexity is no longer determined by atoms and molecules but by sensations beyond matter. All physical and seemingly “spiritual” development happens thanks to a more complex organization, a greater connection and the appearance of new connections.

This development is similar to the evolution of computers. The first calculators were completely mechanical, with gears. Then they evolved, becoming electric and then electronic. But everything is derived from simple operations with zero and one. Just as in our life, there is plus or minus. A big plus is a lot of ones and a big minus is a lot of zeroes. But this is the extent of a unit of measure, for everything else is derived from connection, outside of which there is nothing.

All of the complexity and immortality of creation, all of the greatness of the human brain, is determined by the billions of cells in the human brain, each one of them being minus or plus, zero or one.

But when they connect together, they make it possible for us to register an infinite amount of information and compare it to itself. As a result of the comparison of emotional and mental information, a more and more developed human perception of the world appears.

How Can We Discover The Map Of Life?

laitman_760_2Question: You say that we are all one soul, but how is that related to my life? Even if this is true, I don’t understand what I actually can do?

Answer: We perform many actions in our lives. I begin this life and end it, but do I know what I am living for? No. Do I know today what to do with my life tomorrow? Not really.

It is like entering a small door in a giant house and getting lost there, not knowing when I can get out of all of the rooms and whether I entered them by mistake or not. We don’t know how to determine our good fate by ourselves.

The wisdom of Kabbalah gives us the map of life, and you can use it like an atlas.

Suppose you go on a vacation to some foreign land. You look at the map of that country, the map of the city you are in, and it is clear to you where you are and how to maximize the pleasure of spending this vacation to miss nothing: to see the sites, taste their local dishes, etc. Even for this week, you don’t want to waste a thing.

We have entered a place called this world, and how we are going to spend the time here doesn’t seem to worry us.

The wisdom of Kabbalah gives you a map according to which you can see where you are and discover where everything that is good and wonderful is. Why should you roam the streets aimlessly exposed to dangerous and dirty places?!

You can choose the good way and attain the best conditions. There is always a choice to some extent. Everyone can choose what is suitable for him according to the root of his soul. This is exactly what the wisdom of Kabbalah enables us to do.

Up to now, we have developed in a very simple manner. Everyone acquired a certain profession in order to make money, to have a family, and to succeed. Today, we have outgrown this development. We don’t want simply to have a family or a profession. We want to discover something that is more internal. And that is why we need the wisdom of Kabbalah that will guide us correctly in the search for meaning in life.

Discovering The Secrets Of Life

Why Do I Get All of This?

laitman_555Question: Why do numerous troubles pour onto those who live virtuously, never hurt anybody, and make every effort to help the others? Is it a punishment for their prior lives?

Answer: People came up with many theories about punishments for their prior lives and future rewards. In fact, nobody knows why we get blows from destiny.

We all depend on each other. We all are in one network. All of us represent one common soul of Adam; we are one whole! The overall system we exist in is called “Adam.”

Each of the system’s parts is responsible for the others. Our body works similarly: if there is a wound on the foot, it hurts the whole body aches and can’t think of anything besides the wound. In this case, head and nerves depend on the sore foot. Our interdependence extends to this degree.

Our world is an integral system. That’s why it is necessary to improve the entire world, mend our inclusion into each other and the rest of souls. If you do, you begin sensing yourself in a perfect and absolutely comfortable state.

Question: What does the correction of our inclusion in other souls mean?

Answer: It signifies the state of “loving thy neighbor as thyself.” Before we completely correct ourselves, entirely and mutually, we will continue asking questions about the reasons for earthly afflictions without being able to find suitable answers.

Correcting The General Soul

Laitman_117The Torah, Numbers 17:24 – 17:26: Moses took out all the staffs from before the Lord, to the children of Israel; they saw and they took, each man his staff. The Lord said to Moses: Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the Testimony as a keepsake [and] a sign for rebellious ones. Then their complaints against Me will end and they will not die.

Moses did so. He did just as the Lord had commanded him.

Inspecting the rod is the adaptation to the attributes of the general soul, without which it is impossible to advance.

The spiritual movement is based first on the scrutiny of what is going on and then on its correct implementation. This is the reason that it is written, “they saw” “and they took,” which means that they agreed and continued.

The Torah, Numbers 17:27 – 17:28: The children of Israel spoke to Moses saying, “Behold, we are dying, we will perish, we are all lost! Whoever comes the closest to the Mishkan of the Lord dies! Have we been consigned to die?”

The fact is that a person doesn’t see how these desires are going to be revealed in the corrected state since now they are revealed in the opposite form against unity.

We don’t understand that none of the desires and attributes that exist in us were created in vain. They all undergo correction, and the problem is only in the sequence in which they appear.

This is the reason we must scrutinize the sequence according to which everything is arranged and why it is so complicated. This is because the entire point is not that it is you today and me tomorrow, but that the sequence reveals to us the general schema, the structure of the general soul and how we are connected to one another.

This invokes the knowledge and attainment in us, and the feeling that we are part of the general schema, and we begin to understand how it operates. This means that we can influence it by many parameters and see how it changes.

The scrutiny of who I am, and then you, and then another, and so forth, symbolizes this sequence. This is how the main thought is revealed, the thought of the Creator, the basis of the attainment of the upper world. It is not the personal correction of some small part, desire, or attribute, but the mutual connection. This is the reason that everything isn’t that simple.

Let’s suppose that we have a million components of a certain device: capacitors, resistors, transistors, etc. But how can we put them together in such a scheme that they would form a perpetual engine? This is the most important thing, the mutual connection.

Therefore, all of the conflicts that the children of Israel have are actually about their adhesion. What does is meant by “correct me?” Find out where your place is in the general schema so that you will know what you should look like in order to be together with others.

The correction cannot be of a certain person or a certain attribute, but one that is the sum of the whole soul because at the end of the mutual integral action it is totally connected to everyone.

The essential parts now are chosen out of the entire pile that is the general soul after the shattering. These parts will move to the side, and others will follow them. These will move partially forward, and so on, and thus gradually the soul is put together, a huge number of desires, attributes, and intentions.

The Physical And Spiritual World

Laitman_712_03Question: How does the physical world influence the spiritual world?

Answer: It doesn’t. Everything descends from top to bottom: the upper world affects the lower. But under certain conditions, we can influence the upper world, and through it—the material world.

As we correct our egoistic desires, we affect the properties we have mastered—the properties of bestowal and love. By matching these properties with the altruistic properties of the common soul, through it, we influence the impact it has on our world.

Question: Is there danger that by bringing oneself closer to the Creator and mastering the governing system, Kabbalists could abuse their knowledge?

Answer: It is impossible, because when you fall from the property of bestowal and love you immediately lose your connection with the upper world and, therefore, its impact on our world.

The Sin Of Adam Is The Cause Of All Of Our Troubles

laitman_929Question: Why in these days, from the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, is a completely unique atmosphere felt?

Answer: These are days of judgment, and we see this when we look at the events that are happening in Europe and Israel. The world requires our correct participation.

In the days of judgment we need to judge ourselves, our behavior, our deeds, to clarify the cause for all of the failures and the unfavorable fate.

It is always necessary to examine ourselves in relation to the origin, and our origin is Adam HaRishon (the First Man). The sin of Adam HaRishon is the reason for everything that happened after it.

Twenty generations after Adam, one of the great sages of ancient Babylon Abraham began the correction of the sin of Adam HaRishon; he called for all the Babylonians to unite and rise above the mutual hatred, which is called the Tower of Babel that led to a crisis.

Some of the Babylonians heard the call of Abraham and joined him. Abraham taught his students “to love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), so that love will cover all crimes, over all hatred. So Abraham gathered a group that later evolved into the people of Israel.

These events are directly related to what is happening today. After so many events we have experienced throughout history, we are still in the same situation of Adam HaRishon; we must correct his sin.

The people of Israel were chosen from among all the other peoples for this purpose because they had the desire for unity, spirituality.

These are a unique people possessing a unique desire, a special readiness of mind and soul that can achieve such a unity between them by which the whole world is then united. The great Kabbalist Baal HaSulam wrote about this in the article, “Introduction to The Book of Zohar.”

The sin of Adam is the basis of the breakup of humanity, all of its suffering and troubles. All of our problems come from this sin because of which one great desire, one soul, was shattered into a multitude of fragments. In each one of us there is a tiny fragment of the collective soul.

If eight billion people are living in the world today, there is a part of the soul of Adam HaRishon, of Adam in each one of them. So we need to connect with each other so that all of these parts will merge together.

But the realization of this function isn’t imposed upon eight billion but upon the people of Israel. If the people of Israel will correct themselves and unify according to the conditions of “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” then all the nations of the world will automatically be integrated within it.

This is specifically what Abraham taught the ancient Babylonians who joined him and created the people of Israel. They were selected from all of the humanity that existed then, when for the first time the shattering, the first crisis after the shattering of Adam was discovered.

Abraham gathered around him all those who wanted to correct the primordial sin. These were unique people who yearned for the goal of creation, the attainment of the meaning of life, and Abraham taught them the method of connection and unity.

Once Again Everyone Will Become A Single People

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (cont.ws):  “This revolution, many researchers call a demographic catastrophe, as the European region stopped the reproduction of its population. By 2050, excluding immigration, instead of the current 728 million, the European continent will number 600 million. That is equivalent to the loss of the population living today in Germany, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland combined. The last time such a significant reduction in the population was observed in Europe was only during the plague years 1347-1352. …

“Naturally, this leads to the inability of the EU to maintain the integrity of the existing social structure: the labor force will soon be too small, which already puts into question the very preservation of the social security system. While the many generations who were born in the demographic boom after World War II are still working in Europe, when they retire, the system will change radically. …

“The most important condition to prevent it is a constant and growing influx of immigrants. …

“As a result of these processes in the countries of Europe, there is a deep ethnocultural restructuring, in which it is increasingly becoming like a ‘melting pot’ (the concept of total blending of nations and races …). Europeans are being replaced by other ethnic groups, which are mixed with each other, and are forming a ‘nation of immigrants’ or ‘new nomads.'”

My Comment: All this is completely compatible with the trend of all matter merging into a single whole, into the image of Adam (Man), as described in the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Leading A Human Life

Laitman_931-01Question: What does it mean to connect to other people? What stands in my way of doing so and which force can correct this evil in me?

Answer: According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, our biological bodies will remain corporeal and will continue to exist like all the other animals. But there is another essence in a human being, a human entity, the beginning of a soul. There is a tiny part of that soul in each of us.

This human part in us is our inner world, our psychology, our desires and thoughts, that have nothing to do with our corporeal existence but are above the body. It is our desire to discover what life is, what is the goal of life, and why we came into this world, that is, to respond to all these “childish” questions.

If we begin to distinguish the human parts in us and to connect them with one another, we will put together the system called “first man,” Adam. This interconnected system existed in the past, but then it was shattered into many pieces, which we call the sin of the Tree of Knowledge, and now we have to put it together again.

If we reconstruct this system together and begin to study it, we will understand how it works. When we see the complex web of connections between us, we will understand the plan of creation and its purpose. When we begin to care more about our souls and not about our physical existence, we ascend above our bodies in our feeling, our understanding, and our consciousness. Thus, we build our general soul and feel the new reality, the upper world, the Garden of Eden, in it. This is the goal, and instead of living in a body that belongs to the animate level and lives like an animal, we rise to the level of “first man,” Adam.

If we connect all our human parts, we will feel a human life that is totally different from our previous life. When we lead a human life, we cease to depend on our bodies. The body can die, but the human being will continue to live on a new level.

The goal of our existence is to raise us from the corporeal level to the human level, and this is the difference between this world and the next world.

Who Is To Blame For The Sin Of Adam?

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe discovery of evil is called the sin of Adam. But, this was in fact not a sin, for the Creator Himself says that He created the evil inclination. This means that Adam did not sin, rather he only discovered the sin, his evil, egoistic nature.

From the start we were created with a nature such as this so that we would have the opportunity to rise above it, and from this evil, become aware of the good, the Creator. It is impossible to discover this without that nature, “As the advantage of Light over Darkness,” (Kohelet Rabbah 2:13).

In the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) we celebrate the opportunity to rise up and attain the upper force, the Creator, to become Adam (Man), meaning the person who resembles Him. This is within the power of everyone, for Adam was simply the first who did it. As it is said, “for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them” (Jeremiah 31:33), and “…for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Isaiah 56:7). So Adam is an image that is relevant to all of humanity.

If during this holiday we make the right accounting of the past year, we clarify that we have still not attained correction and that we have not ascended with all of humanity to the peak of our existence, the spiritual world, the level of resembling the higher, eternal and perfect power. And for this we ask forgiveness, meaning we judge ourselves that we could have discovered our evil inclination and corrected it, rising above it and uniting between us, but we didn’t do it. So we ask in the beginning of the year that we be given the power that makes it possible to correct ourselves and reach the goal of creation.

Adam’s Sin And The Correction Of The Soul

laitman_557The Torah, “Numbers” 1:20 – 1:27: And the children of Reuben, Israel’s first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

This is about the shattered particles of the soul that assemble into one general soul.

The Upper Light enters the tiny spiritual particle and brings into this particle all its power and energy that includes the whole universe, all the worlds, everything that the Creator has given the created being, and thus blows it to pieces. The shattering symbolizes the revelation of the great egoism inside it, and this is called Adam’s sin.

Now a great egoistic desire is revealed in the tiny particle that exploded into a billion parts, which is equal to the infinite Upper Light. When the Light enters the particle, it transfers all its greatness to it in an opposite form, in the form of help against. Now we have to change all the great egoistic attributes into the attribute of the Light according to our connection and unity.

But we don’t return to the tiny particle; rather, we connect and are covered by all the Upper Light. It is as if we dress onto this particle like a snake that dresses on its prey.

We have to understand that all the attributes, all the mutual connections, everything we have to discover, is separated in an absolute accurate manner and they all have their own places. These are the clear and accurate physical laws that are based on the correlation between the Light and the desire, between the Creator and the attribute that is opposite from Him. Everything has to be kept in perfect accuracy, and therefore it is said: examine whether you calculate everything correctly, whether you have undergone certain states, whether you are on a given spiritual level, and whether you have perceived it internally.
