The Great Light of Final Salvation—Hoshana Rabbah

293.1The seventh day of the Sukkot holiday, which completes the holidays, is called Hoshana Rabbah (The Great Salvation). Every day we ask the Creator for salvation, and now, on the last day of the holiday, we must combine all our requests into one big cry: “Save us!” After all, we kept asking, but salvation did not come.

This seventh day is dedicated to King David who feels there is no great, final salvation for the entire people of Israel yet. As the king of Israel, Sefira Malchut, he feels this most of all and therefore cries out to the Creator, and we need to join in this cry.

On the night of Hoshana Rabbah, it is customary for everyone to check whether he has a shade, the perfect faith, clothing for the light. Night, darkness, comes precisely to the place where light should be revealed. And if we pray and ask as we should, light comes inside this darkness, and then it seems much stronger than usual.

Faith is the condition on which the light can shine, and nothing can overshadow it. We call this night Hoshana Rabbah because the light comes to those Kelim who need it, demand it, and ask for it to be revealed. This is a consequence of all the past days of Sukkot as a result of which the light appears. And to the extent of this light comes the great salvation, Hoshana Rabbah.

A person checks his shade, that is, how much effort he exerted, despite concealment, and merited salvation, the light. Throughout the Sukkot festival he asked to be in the shade, that is, he asked for faith. And now, by his shade, he checks how correctly he walked the path and prepared himself for the great light that should be revealed during Hoshana Rabbah.

As a result of this request, we receive the great light of Hoshana Rabbah that leads us to correction. This light gives us a huge shade within which we can reveal the huge light of the great salvation, Hoshana Rabbah.

From Impurity Toward Correction

137Through the Torah and Mitzvot [commandments] that a person does, they bring upon him thoughts and desires to want to purify himself (Rabash, Assorted Notes 158, “According to the Sorrow Is the Reward”).

Question: Doesn’t the desire for purification come after a person has felt a state of purity sent to him from above by the Creator?

Answer: No, we cannot act that way. We move from our impurity, from our inner dirt, toward correction. Therefore, we cannot speak of a corrected state manifesting in us before the uncorrected state does.

Question: So does this mean that anything we might be experiencing now as a state of purity is a lie?

Answer: At this point, yes, of course. We do not yet have truly corrected vessels (Kelim). Therefore, all our so-called purity is only uncorrected vessels, which are relatively corrected compared to our egoism.

But even if we are working without constantly thinking about purification, the light in the Torah and the books we study still influence us.

Draw Closer to the Upper

243.05Question: How can we combine two lines in our work: wholeness (gratitude) and deficiency (Hissaron)?

Answer: It is through connection with the upper degree. On one side there is the upper degree, and on the other, you, the lower degree; make your connection with it as close as possible.

That is done through prayer on the level of feelings. You do not even need words; you simply enter a state where you want to draw closer to the upper.

Question: You mentioned the Psalms. I also love them, but I am not sure if they are the state of the left or right line.

Answer: For us, they are the middle line. Even if you can identify right or left lines in the Psalms, for our level, they represent the middle line, which is higher than us.

Questions about Spiritual Work—192

281.02Question: Is it possible to see or feel that another person has done inner work within themselves?

Answer: Usually this is felt not just from inner work, but also through external signs: how you connect with others and how you participate in lessons and various events. It shows.

Question: Is your group the joy and adornments gifted to you by the Creator?

Answer: Ultimately that is exactly what it comes down to. If you think that way, then you are doing well.

Question: It is said that a person in prayer is in the Creator’s palace, close to Him. Upon receiving an answer to the prayer, he leaves that palace. Does this mean that in prayer, we seek not the answer but the prayer itself?

Answer: In prayer, request, and response we always seek to stay connected with the Creator.

Question: Are the adornments the corrected desires of my friends? Can this be taken as a basis for our work?

Answer: Absolutely. That is elevation, where you exalt specific qualities and they are considered the adornment of the entire group.

For Darkness to Become a True Kli

276.01Question: When and under what conditions does darkness become a true Kli?

Answer: If the desires are not directed toward self-enjoyment, then they become a true Kli.

Question: Why is a person willing to remain in the shadow of the Creator? What is the true work and enjoyment in this?

Answer: A person is willing to remain in the shadow of the Creator when one doesn’t want to add even more persistence acquiring the spiritual desire to bestow, to bring pleasure to others, or to help someone. Since this does not manifest in one, a person remains in the same place as before.

The Creator deliberately creates such conditions for us so that we put in a little more effort, a little more striving, and then we will draw closer to Him.

What Pleasures Should We Prefer?

506.2Comment: The Creator gives us false clothing so that we can choose true ones. But we cannot give up some of our animalistic pleasures: food, sex, family, sleep, and so on.

My Response: We should not give them up. We simply need to rise above them, and that is all.

Question: What about the other desires related to society, like money, power, knowledge, and fame?

Answer: They too are given to us so that we can sort through them, take what is necessary, and prioritize spiritual pleasures over all others.

Question: If we once enjoyed something false and then something more true begins to reveal itself, can we return to the false clothing? Is that allowed?

Answer: No, it is not allowed. This is neither in the desires nor in the plans of the Creator.
