The Essence of Connection

938.05Question: What does it mean that the ten reveals the face of Shechina? Is it some kind of sensation between the friends?

Answer: Yes, if there is no common sensation, how can the Creator be felt? A single person cannot feel the Creator. One must be connected with others, bestow, receive, and form a complete feeling, a complete Kli, together with them.

Question: How is this complete Kli different from the usual connection between friends in the ten?

Answer: It differs in the essence of connection when the friends connect to reveal the Creator, not for themselves, but for the entire world. That is the direction they act in.

Question: Suppose we, at our gathering, try to build the intention to reveal the Creator for the sake of the entire world. What should happen in our connection for the face of the Shechina to manifest there?

Answer: You should feel that you are gradually getting closer to the state where the Shechina reveals within you. When this happens, the ten will feel the manifestation of the Creator.

How Do We Create a Common Desire?

631.1Comment: You said that desire is primary. This threw me into a stupor because desires arise in my brain.

My Response: No, the Creator initially created desires, and then they began to take on various magnitudes, meanings, and forms, which we see as inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human degrees. In general, there are only desires in nature, only desires.

Question: If these desires arose in my brain, how can I correctly convey them to my friends and society and try to prove that they are correct?

Answer: There is nothing to prove. Each person has one’s own desires and is occupied only with them.

Question: And how do we create a common desire to sail together and unite?

Answer: It depends on your goal, and if you have only one, the Creator, you will unite your desires in Him.

Question: According to my feelings, everyone has their own Creator. Everyone creates Him by himself even though we are together. How do we create a collective Creator correctly?

Answer: Strive for a common goal, and you will understand how to act among yourselves.

The Futility of Life

234If a person does not devote his life to pursuing any path, either he wastes himself on many different searches and ends his life with nothing, or he lives like an animal without any search for a purpose. All this is determined not by him, but by his desire.

I do not imagine myself pursuing wealth, power, or fame. After all, these things end along with my life. Why do this? I am already over seventy years old. Okay, let us say I will have another ten years. So what is next? Then nothing and that’s it, it’s over. So what should I do in these ten years?

Comment: Work in a garden, grow flowers, watch TV.

My Response: Yes, yes, also children, grandchildren… I’m not against it. Kabbalah obliges a person to take part in everyday life, but the purpose of life should still guide us forward.

Comment: There is a classic notion, I will have my children there to give me a glass of water in my old age.

My Response: What difference does this make in how I die? What is next if my children will bring water to me or not in old age? This is where everything ends. Let’s say I have a special five-star nursing home. Nurses and caretakers will be around me, pampering me like a small child. They will wipe and bottle-feed me until I happily fall asleep in their arms, soothed by eternal restful sleep. Is that it? Why did I live my life?

Today, a person only thinks about his life and its end, hoping to live out his last years more comfortably. There’s nothing to talk about here.

But the fact is that people who come to study Kabbalah understand that if they do not find the purpose of life, then this life is of no use to them; it would be better if it did not exist.

Take an Example from the Righteous

294.2He went and married a sinner (Midrash Rabbah, Bereshit 17)

Question: Can a man know in advance whether a woman is a sinner or a righteous?

Answer: In general, yes. A man may know whether a woman is idle or not. Perhaps she is engaged in some unclean activities, and so on. When choosing a woman, one must look at how righteous she is.

Question: If we act this way, does it mean all sinners will remain lonely?

Answer: A few women will remain single, and the rest will follow the example of the righteous.

We Cannot Do Without a Friend

237Question: Kabbalists often say, “Let us think about our friends” or something similar. Does the concentration of thought change some material things in our lives?

Answer: Thought is the most important thing we have, even though our thoughts are not pure because in reality everyone thinks about themselves and not about others.

Although we think about others only when we want them to make us feel better, I could not even think about anything else because I am an absolute egoist, and this is my nature. Still, in this inner movement, in this impulse, there exists some small element of a different, unique attitude toward a friend in which I somehow realize inside myself that I cannot do without him.

I might not want this, but the Creator arranged everything this way. What can I do? I have to love him involuntarily, without knowing what loving means. Nevertheless, something like this should happen in the future. They say it is necessary.

In other words, there are many such artificial movements, but since they are in the general mechanism, they bring the light of correction upon us. I ask for my correction despite not wanting to change. It works like a child who does not know what he wants. Nevertheless, it works.

Live in a Single Organism, in the Creator

744Question: What is this leap—love?

Answer: Love is a state where you treat others with a desire for complete bestowal and you strive to become like the Creator in action.

Comment: I still cannot grasp the difference. Suppose a person works like an organ in the body. He receives the most necessary things for himself and gives everything else for the sake of the entire organism. Thanks to this, the organism lives.

My Response: Yes, this is if we are talking about the internal system of the organism.

Question: So, can we say that our organs are altruistic? But we still do not say that they love each other. What is love, then?

Answer: Love, as Baal Sulam says, is a state where each organ feels all the other organs and helps them function properly.

Question: And on the human level?

Answer: There is no such state between people. It exists only at the level of the internal system of the organism.

Question: What did our sages mean when they wrote “Love your neighbor as yourself”? What is this stage when people reach such a state?

Answer: This is a stage of our internal development when we realize we must connect through good connections. That is, it is an emotional state when a person directly lives the life of society. Then we feel each other as if living in one organism.

Question: And is this organism the Creator or an upper force?

Answer: It is the Creator. Right!

Questions about Spiritual Work—139

281.02Question: The Creator gives one a place for faith and a place for work in the heart. How can we hold and expand this space? Is this our concern?

Answer: Yes, this is achieved by increasing the importance of the fact that the Creator is working on us.

Question: What advances us faster spiritually: when we humble ourselves or when others humiliate us?

Answer: It is when we humble ourselves, but we must be careful that it is done correctly and not artificially.

Question: Should I always build an intention when working with the mind and heart?

Answer: You should always try to find yourself in what you say and think.

Question: If I have many logical proofs that my friends are doing everything right, but in my heart, I feel unfounded hatred toward them, can my mind help me change this feeling?

Answer: This is very difficult. You should pray about this. I do not believe the mind can help. Only prayer can help you.

Question: How can one be joyful when I understand with my mind that the closer the Creator brings us, the more I move away from Him?

Answer: No, the Creator constantly brings us closer, and by this, we have the opportunity to more critically and soberly realize what we are going through.

Different Demands

243.01Question: Rabash did not want to let his friends or students read Shamati because they did not have the left line. We study that Israel is the lightest, purest aspirations and desires. So why do you say that they are the roughest and the heaviest ones?

Answer: The vessels (Kelim) that need to be corrected are determined by the amount of egoistic impurities, and therefore, they are felt as particularly selfish and in need of correction first. In others it doesn’t feel that way; it seems as though nothing serious is happening with them.

Therefore, it is evident that the people of Israel stand out in their egoism relative to other nations of the world, but only because they have different demands made on them.

If these demands were the same for both the nations of the world and the Israelites, then the people of Israel would not be the most egoistic.

So it all depends on how we approach it initially and by what standards we measure.
