In the News: (from the annual report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute):“Global military expenditure set new record in 2008″ Global military expenditure in 2008 is estimated to have totaled $1464 billion. This represents an increase of 4 percent in real terms compared to 2007, and of 45 per cent since 1999. Military expenditure comprised approximately 2.4 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008.
My Comment: The “reason” for military spending has been changed over the years: before it was done for the sake of maintaining a balance between the East and West, whereas now it is done in the name of a global war on terrorism. Everyone has successfully been able to use this “just cause” to militarize their countries even more.
