The Ten Commandments Of Connection

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Can you explain the meaning of the ten commandments that were given on Mt. Sinai and that should be repeated every day, now, before Shavuot, which symbolizes the giving of the Torah?

Answer:  First of all, the ten commandments symbolize the desires in which we are connected to one another. It is only about connection.

The giving of the Torah takes place at the foot of the mountain only after the people accept the condition of mutual guarantee as one man in one heart. This means that we understand that there is a mountain of our ego above us and that we can ascend this mountain only with one point in the heart. This point is called Moses since it pulls us out of our ego.

Mt. Sinai is enormous, like the tower of Babel and even larger. We are at the bottom of the mountain ready to stand around this mountain of our ego. That is, we agree to connect all the parts of our private egoism into one mountain and not to fear it although it is a mountain of hate. We need to yearn for connection even though the only goal of our ego is to resist connection.

When we connect this way, we demand the revelation of the power of bestowal in our connection. It is because the inclination for connection is the spiritual vessel, the deficiency for mutual bestowal, as it is written, “From the love of the creatures to the love of the Creator.” Thus, we accept the condition of “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Remove The Heavy Burden From The Soul

Dr. Michael LaitmanAaron was completely free of error, except for the incident with the Golden Calf. This error was a heavy burden on his soul. He was concerned that the Creator would reject his sacred work and his priesthood. Moses said to him, “You don’t have to be afraid! The Omnipotent forgives you!” It was only then that Aaron went up to the altar. (M. Weisman, “Midrash Mispar,” Parshat “Shemini”).

Aaron considered himself unworthy of the sacred work and the priesthood because he felt within him the previous breach, the previous crisis, the previous shattering, from the sin of the golden calf.

So, he had to pass through a turning point in order to rise up again. Only then was he ready for the correction of the sins committed at the time of the worship of the golden calf.

He began to feel that the sin of the golden calf was arranged intentionally for his present correction. This means that this problem had to be revealed precisely in this way  otherwise it would not have been revealed. Now it was possible to reveal it and correct it.

This happened when Aaron connected with Moses, and in their work together, they reached a state during which the Upper Light descended on them clothed in the characteristic of bestowal. In this way, by approaching each other, they acquired the characteristic of bestowal.

Effects Of The Upper Roots

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar says that there is a general rule: similar to the ten upper Sefirot of faith there are ten Sefirot of dirty witchcraft below. All animals on the face of earth belong to either of these two parts.

The Scriptures allow us to consume animals that belong to the ten Sefirot of sanctity and prohibits eating those animals that are a part of the ten Sefirot of wickedness.

Naturally, we are not talking about witchcraft in this world since anything that is considered witchcraft here is just a psychological impact on people and nothing but that. A prohibition to consume certain types of animals stems from the spiritual roots.

The spiritual roots bear both egoistic and altruistic sides. The egoistic part is called impure or harmful, i.e., it is not cleaned of the egoistic filth. At the same time, inanimate, vegetative, animate, and speaking properties that are based on bestowal and love of our neighbors are called pure and corrected and are suitable for further use.

In corporeality, only certain types of imprints of the upper qualities are considered impure. However, all of them are just conditional. Let’s say it is prohibited to eat pork or camel meat because they are impure. This fact can be explained by the notion that the upper forces that correspond to these animals are of an egoistic nature.

Other upper forces that resemble, for example, a chicken, a goat, or a cow are altruistic. These animals have special signs that work as imprints of spirituality in them.

In the upper world, in order to turn a desire (Malchut, the property of reception) into an altruistic quality, this desire has to be attached to Bina (the intention to bestow).

That’s why digestive systems of the majority of ruminants symbolize receiving for the sake of bestowal. Intestinal tracts of these animals and the way they consume food consists of chewing-burping, chewing-burping. It is similar to “Malchut-Bina, Malchut-Bina.”

Obviously, there is nothing spiritual in these ruminants, but their way of food consumption is a physical consequence that stems out of the upper properties. This is the first point.

Secondly, the intention to bestow and the will to receive exist separately and represent the right and left lines. Our reception is limited to the amount of the intention to bestow we have. That’s why the cloven hooves of these animals represent a splitting of the right and left lines.

This explains why only those animals who have cloven hoofs and a specific type of digestive system are considered kosher in this world.

As to water animals, only fish that have fins and scales that symbolize the screen are considered kosher. There are certain restrictions on consumption of birds, and they also derive from the upper roots.

The Torah concretely lists the fauna representatives that carry a so-called “Godly seal” on them. It is said: “Know that I created them; I created nothing of the same type. You will never find it.”

Interestingly, the Torah is three thousand years old and whenever we try to find anything that is not mentioned in it, we do not succeed. Such a thing has never been found so far.

All inanimate, vegetative, animate, and speaking desires of the spiritual realm materialize in this world through physical objects or phenomena. Each of these levels is accompanied by specific requirements that are enhanced from level to level.

At the inanimate level, it is possible to consume anything at all. Practically, all that is used at this level is salt, water, and soil (there are certain types of soil that are suitable for consumption).

At the vegetative level, there also is a special type of Kashrut. Kashrut stands for the suitability of the products that symbolize different types of desires. Practically every plant is considered edible. However, there is a rule that prohibits eating fruit for three years after a tree begins to bear fruit. Only after three consecutive years of fruit bearing are people allowed to eat the fruit. Unripe or overripe fruit are prohibited to consume, etc.

The biggest restrictions apply to the animate level. It is extremely important to correctly drain blood out of animals and cut off the parts that are not good for eating. Next, it is essential to cook meat in a certain way and to a certain degree, not more, but not less. Everything is clearly explained in the Scriptures.

By the way, these rules are very good for establishing normal digestion in humans. The great Kabbalist Rambam, who attained the roots of these phenomena, wrote a cook book that is based on these rules. If we lived in accordance with these laws, our existence would be compatible with the upper world, the upper laws. Thus, we would benefit from everything around and so would our corporeal body.

If we put the above in Kabbalistic terms, everything is based on the connection between Malchut and Bina. Malchut is the property of reception, whereas Bina is the intention to bestow. When correctly connected, they represent receiving for the sake of bestowal. This type of food consumption is called kosher, since it means for the sake of bestowal, through the environment to the Creator.

Detachment and Connection

Dr. Michael Laitman Moshe Weissman, “The Midrash Says,” Chapter “Shemini”: “Moshe said to his brother Aaron: ‘When I was appointed interim High Priest for seven days of the Consecration, I cherished the secret hope that I will be allowed to perpetuate this position for myself forever.

But because, I, at first refused to fulfill the request of the Almighty to take the Jews out of Egypt, I am not allowed to be the High Priest. And so this post is transferred to you, Aaron.

My brother, how can I do that to you? – Aaron pleaded. – How can I be a High Priest after you spent so much effort on the construction of the Mishkan?’

Moshe replied: When you heard that the Creator had chosen me to lead the Jewish people you rejoiced; so I am also happy that you will perform the duties of the High Priest.”

If we regard this conversation from a purely psychological point of view, we would most likely think that this passage is about a dialog between two different people. In fact, this conversation takes place inside one person, since Moshe and Aaron symbolize two opposite qualities in a man.

Aaron stands for the left part, and Moshe the right line. By nature, they are incompatible. That’s why they work separately.

Even though they are brothers and are united, there is always a gap and a connection between brothers. This passage shows us how to use both properties to make a positive impact on everybody around.

Moshe is a property of bestowal and love; it symbolizes a proximity to Abraham. Aaron denotes an internal tension, a bad quality that naturally overcomes itself and works for the Creator. Both properties are meant to replenish each other.

At The Peak Of The Acute Sensations

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Great Commentary is a book that was written close to 3,600 years ago. Much later it was amended again and again, but the beginning of its creation coincided with Abraham leaving Babylon and the subsequent destruction of the kingdom of Babylon. The Great Commentary is a book of chronicles that accompanied the history of the people throughout the many years before they went into the Egyptian exile.

There it is said that when the sacrificial animals were ready, it was Aaron’s turn to begin the sacred service. But he stood and didn’t move. “Aaron, go out!” shouted Moses. “Why are you stalling? Indeed you were chosen to be the high priest. Find the courage to begin the sacred service!” But Aaron continued to stand hesitantly, because every time he looked at the altar, the altar took on the outline of a bull.

Question: How does a person feel inside himself when the altar takes on the outline of a bull?

Answer: For me these words don’t evoke any associations with bulls. First of all, this is all about one person. But because it is difficult for us to describe the actions that are considered as happening within one person, let’s describe them as people who identify and feel everything as one person, how their feelings are mutual and their sensations acute.

As one person, they begin to elevate themselves, dividing themselves into the people (Israel), Levites serving the people, and the Cohens, the highest level of service in a person. For in a person, meaning in the general image of an Adam (human), in the general Partzuf there are three levels, NHY ( Neshama. Haya, Yechida), HGT (Hesed, Gvurah, Tifferet), HBD (Hochma, Bina, Daat).

In principle, they are always gathering and assembling the image of the whole person, of Adam. So they begin to feel whether they rise to the level of Aaron, coming into contact with the Creator. Their mission is to reach adherence between them, for only in connection do they rise sequentially to the level of the “people,” to the level of the Levites, and after that to the level of the Cohens, and from the level of Cohens to the level of Aaron, and after that they attain the level of Moses.

That is how they solve the problem of connection for themselves, and in their common unity, which is called Mishkan, the dweller (Shochen) is discovered. The dweller is the Creator who is felt in a person as having descended to this place and filling it, like a fog that fills a valley.

One Rule With 612 Commentaries

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe word “Klal” (collective/rule) indicates a sum of details that, when put together, form the above collective. Thus, when he says about the Mitzva, “love thy friend as thyself,” that it is a great Klal in the Torah, we must understand that the rest of the 612 Mitzvot (precepts) in the Torah, with all their interpretations, are no more and no less than the sum of the details inserted and contained in that single Mitzva (singular for Mitzvot), “love thy friend as thyself. (Baal HaSulam, “Matan Torah” –  “The Giving of the Torah”).

This means that the entire Torah is given in order to attain the general rule of loving our neighbors as ourselves. The rest that is written in the Torah except this one concept “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is just a clarification of this rule.

Everything is included in this one rule. That’s why when we forget this rule, no spiritual path is possible for us, nor are we connected with the spiritual process or continue pursuing the spiritual goals any longer. If we attempt encompassing this principle, we can even stop checking the level we are at or trying to find out where we actually are.

The whole Torah was given to us and is meant to help us to attain connection that is called love in our lives. There are two ways of doing it: One is by following a long road full of affliction that represents the natural developmental way, and the other is a pleasant shortcut that is ensured by the Torah. One way or the other,  the entire humanity, from the very beginning to the very end, is engaged in advancement that leads us to loving our neighbors.

If we understand and acknowledge that we are now just practicing and playing games, we follow a relatively easy and comfortable way of reaching the goal. Still, we’ll have to go through some troubles and problems, resolve and explore them so that we get a better feeling of their essence and origin. We will have to resolve various situations in our minds and sensations because this process lets us to better understand and feel things.

In order to make this path easier and more pleasant for us, there is the Torah with the help of which we reach the state of loving our neighbors. From this phase on, we eventually will come to loving the Creator. However, there is nothing we can achieve by just following the path of suffering. Everything depends on the awakening on our side.

Getting Closer To The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Shemini), 9:5-9:7: And they took what Moses had commanded, to the front of the Tent of Meeting, and the entire community approached and stood before the Lord. And Moses said, “This is the thing the Lord has commanded; do [it], and the glory of the Lord may appear to you.”

And Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and perform your sin offering and your burnt offering, atoning for yourself and for the people, and perform the people’s sacrifice, atoning for them, as the Lord has commanded.”

This is about the correction of a person on the level of the altar. The word “altar” in Hebrew stems from the word “sacrifice” and the root to get closer, which is getting closer to the Creator by beginning to correct one’s desires with the intention of for myself to the intention of for society, humanity, and the Creator. Then He is revealed in these corrected desires.

Question: What should the people do so that Aaron will succeed?

Answer: The people refers to the component of Aaron (of this attribute in a person) that must adhere to him, which means all my small desires and attributes that have to participate in the spiritual work together with the upper desire called “Aaron.” In other words, I have to totally draw myself to get closer to the Creator. At the same time, I also have to involve the whole nation by the action of offering sacrifice because I have to check and to discover all the inclinations, desires, and urges inside me, gather them all, and focus them on attaining the level that is now the revelation of the Creator.

Let The Creator Be Revealed To Us

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus (Shemini),” 9:1-9:4: And it was on the eighth day, that Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. And he said to Aaron: “Take for yourself a bull calf as a sin-offering, and a ram as a burnt-offering, [both] unblemished, and bring them near before the Lord.”

A person has to take two of his desires (a bull calf and a ram) and purify them from the egoistic intention, which means to raise his desire to the proper use: from the lowest and most sinful place upwards to the Light.

“And to the children of Israel, you shall speak, saying, ‘Take a he-goat as a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, [both] in their first year and [both] unblemished, as a burnt-offering, and an ox and a ram, as peace offerings, to slaughter before the Lord, and a meal-offering mixed with oil, for today the Lord is appearing to you.’”

If a person doesn’t bring an offering, the Creator will not be revealed. In order to do so, he must first prepare everything: the day, the place, and the time. Second, bringing and offering should not be by the nations of the world, not by the children of Israel, not by the Levites, and not even by Moses but only by the Cohanim (priests) and of the Cohanim, only by Aaron.

Everything has to be ready in the exact way that Moses said. To prepare means to choose of your desires, a place and time. This means the motion, time, desire, and intention that should all eventually provide a corrected desire of in order to bestow, to connect with others. This means that there should be the attribute of Aaron in every person that takes a certain desire (a bull calf or a ram) and slaughters it in a certain way and prepares it in a certain way and then serves it to the Creator so that He can taste it.

The ascent of the desires in order to love and bestow is described in this allegorical way. It is because in our world there are no other words to describe the ascent of the desires to bestowal unto the society and by that unto the Creator. At the same time, the feeling of the Creator descends both to the society and to a person himself who is performing the role of Aaron.

Question: The Torah provides many details! For example, a calf and a lamb both of first year and without a blemish, etc…

Answer: When you begin to work you lack these details. So first there is the Mishna (set of laws) that tells you exactly how to carry out these actions. Then the Mishna becomes incomprehensible since the ego grows and it becomes unclear as to how we should work with it. If a person knew what to do with one kilo of his ego, what to cut off and what to weigh, then now his ego grows to a hundred kilos. There are new options now: miserliness, envy, lust, etc. and it becomes unclear as to how to skin the offering, which part of it can be used or not, and how to prepare it. It is when the problem with the fulfillment of these rules arises that the Babylonian Talmud (teaching) appears.

Everything starts from the Torah, but as the ego grows, there is the growing need for commentaries in the Mishna, and when the ego grows until it becomes uncontrollable, the Talmud appears. Then people have no choice but to simply study it. This state is called exile (Galut).

Fire And Water

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe flame was strong, unlike a conventional flame. Therefore, the water could not extinguish it. Although the copper altar was located in the yard under the open sky, rain never flooded it. (Moshe Weissman, “The Midrash Says,” Chapter “Tzav.”)

The burning of the will to receive is the strongest possible corrective action.

There are various types of correction: the four types of executions (plagues), flaying, salting, koshering and correct consumption, the so-called three years of eagle (for fruit-bearing trees), seven years of plowing, etc. In other words, various types of egoism require special kinds of correction.

The heaviest egoism needs the strongest correction, by fire. When we work at a level of self-immolation and sacrifice our ego for the sake of correction in the future, there are no obstacles on our way.

It is said that water was not capable of putting out the flame. This fact emphasizes that correction by fire is much higher than any other ways of self. The water itself is cleansing, purifying, but it is less powerful than cleansing by fire.

The water corrects only to the level of bestowal, Hafetz Hesed (Galgalta ve Eynaim), whereas the fire corrects the very intention, to receive for the sake of others.

Advancing Towards Regaining Our Sight

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: We hope that you will tell us the secret of the complicated stories in the Torah.

Answer: An oral explanation is not a revelation. Everything is attained only in practice. We were brought up to believe that this would reveal all.

If we live in the same world that the written sources tell us about, then they do reveal something, but only to the extent that we know this world. If they tell us about a world that we don’t know at all and everything in it seems strange, then can the written sources explain anything?

It is merely an explanation that tells us that the upper world surrounds us, like a sphere within a sphere, and we are inside it, and that it constantly manages us in every aspect, each and every one of us and all of us together. I need this information only in order to understand how important it is to start engaging in it and to reveal it.

Today we don’t even understand what is happening in our world, and we feel more and more confused with every day that goes by. If we don’t attain the upper world, its influence on us, the way it operates, and its goal, we will be like blind kittens unable to do anything about our fate and will exist as if in chaotic movement. We will live a meaningless life, lost in oblivion, and will float in the current again in the same initial condition because we have not corrected anything and have done nothing to receive new feelings. We also have not developed any additional senses, and so everything will start anew.

First a person has to see that he is managed by the upper world, a world of strict laws. Living in our corporeal world, we only know some of its laws, but we have no idea what the laws of the upper world are.

If a person understands that he is in a rigid set of physical laws that operate on him, that he can influence them and discover the dual connection to the extent that he perceives and understands these laws and is able to manage them, then it will be a great step forward. People will at least know that they can regain their sight and not flow blindly in the current of life, or to put it more bluntly, not life but death.

Question: So a person should try all this himself?

Answer: That’s not enough. Sufferings are needed. If I understand that something operates on me, but I think, “Let it operate while I wait,” it is like a movie where the outlaw is sentenced to hard labor in order to teach him to work, but he allows the work manager to influence him, saying, “You will influence me while I lay down and rest.” But when he is beaten he cries out, “Oh! Mother!”

It is essential that there must be afflictions, even minor ones. We actually want the minor suffering and the great understanding, since together it will enable us to move forward.
