Preparing A Spiritual Vessel

Dr. Michael LaitmanM. Weisman, “The Midrash Says” (Chapter Shemini), “The Eighth”: Before entering the Mishkan (“Tabernacle” – the presence of the Creator), Nadav and Avihu drank wine with everyone in order to commemorate that joyful day.

Wine symbolizes the left line, the revelation of Gevurot. This means that Nadav and Avihu followed the left line in absolute egoism by clearly ignoring the preparation of the right spiritual vessel.

The question is how they could not comply with the proper revelation of the Creator.

When a person is about to perform spiritual work of getting closer to a more sublime state, he has to prepare for it consistently. He must have the attribute of bestowal, the attribute of receiving, the right intention, the connection with all these attributes, at least with the people. At the same time, he must connect to the upper level, while being in its lower part.

In the case of Nadav and Avihu, however, they make one mistake after another, as if there were racing mindlessly.

But this is done on purpose from Above. When a person receives additional egoism, exceeding his abilities, he loses his wisdom completely. He falls and performs everything under the influence of his growing ego, which covers his eyes, saying: “I want!”

Myths And Realities Of The Bible

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from the Communists of the Capital): “The great events described in the Holy Scriptures never took place. This conclusion was made by Israeli archaeologists after many years of archeological digging. Thus, the walls of Jericho, destroyed by Israeli priests with trumpets, did not exist; the Canaanite settlements were not large and did not have the fenced walls that rose up to heaven.

“Based on the obtained results, archaeologists of biblical studies and the history of the Jewish people believe that the events described in the Bible are myths. Excavations revealed that the Israelis were not in Egypt, did not go through the desert, did not conquer the land, so that to pass it to the 12 tribes.

“None of the biblical legends was confirmed by archaeological finds. Exodus could refer to several families, and then their history was expanded to the whole nation. In addition, the great kingdom of David and Solomon, the apogee of political, military and economic strength of Israel, that stretched from the Euphrates to Gaza does not match the reality.”

My Comment: No one has ever claimed that all the descriptions of the Torah correspond to the realities of this world. The Torah speaks of the upper world and does not describe our world at all! It is time to realize that our world is multi-faceted and that it has many levels, universes, and dimensions. One who wants to know it and how to move from one level to the other comes to study Kabbalah. See the program “Meeting of the Worlds” from 5/16/14.

A Student And A Teacher: The General Circulatory System

Dr. Michael LaitmanM. Weisman. “The Midrash Says,” Chapter “Shemini,”: Since Nadav and Avihu were great experts in the Torah, they decided that there is a commandment to place another fire on the altar, besides the one that was given from Above. They phrased the law in the presence of Moses.

Although their legal decision was right, they were punished by death from Above since it is impossible to phrase this commandment in its ultimate form in the presence of your teacher without consulting him.

It is impossible to observe a commandment without connecting to the teacher. It is impossible to rise above him. This hierarchy is kept until the end of correction.

The moment the student cannot overcome the urge to subdue his teacher, he is burnt.

Question: What does it mean to subdue his teacher?

Answer: To express dissatisfaction, criticism, rejection: When will he finally die so we can take his place? This is what is referred to here.

On the whole, all these are natural attributes that have to be revealed and according to which we should act.

Question: What should a student do with such feelings when they are revealed in him?

Answer: We mustn’t interfere in this process. Many think that I don’t see or hear, that I don’t understand the students’ state, but I mustn’t interfere so as not to deny them of their freewill.

The point is that if a person is told about this in advance, he will act as I tell him. So what does he exist for? He will have no judgment of his own nor his own clarifications, his own correction of the soul. You are robbing him of his life.

If you say too much, then that’s it, you have robbed part of his life and he will have to complete it the next time around. Therefore, there are states in which I would give anything to say something, but, at the same time, I must keep quiet.

Couldn’t Moses and Aaron do anything, for example? But the sons have to go through these states when they wait for the death of their father in order to ascend higher than him. They cannot advance otherwise. This is the only way our ego guides a person. These are all natural attributes.

Question: How should we work with these attributes?

Answer: We should prepare for that, in order to take the teacher’s place and to be greater than him.

To prepare means to organize a group that is based on the principle of mutual connection, but at the same time we should remember that when the teacher departs, he ascends to the next level and by that leaves room for you. It isn’t death but an ascent. This means that you have to be prepared to take the level that has been vacated.

Question: Nadav and Avihu who wished for the death of their teachers (in the spiritual sense) in order to take their place or to advance, actually died. Does that mean that they didn’t complete their work on that level?

Answer: Yes, but the principle of the left line, wishing for the death of the teacher, is a natural attribute and state of a student.

All of a student’s work is to draw the right line, to adhere to the teacher, by understanding that this is the only way they can have the intravenous infusion of the Upper Light: both of the correction and of the filling.

There is a constant struggle inside the students. On the one hand, they want to take the teacher’s place, but on the other hand, they draw the right line. Gradually they have to realize that their whole spiritual life flows to them through him like in the circulatory system.

The Level Of The Sons

Dr. Michael LaitmanM. Weisman, “The Midrash Says,” Chapter “Shemini”: On the eighth day of Holiness, fire came down from the sky and swallowed the sacrifices. After that event, Nadav and Avihu decided that, in spite of that, they must bring their own fire to the altar.

Seven days have gone by (seven levels): Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut. The eighth day belongs to GAR, to the upper part, to the part of the head of the level they are on.

The sons feel nothing toward this level, and thus they cannot bring their own fire to it. They could have connected to it through Moses and Aaron, and then they would have received the feeling that it is forbidden to do so.

Their mistake was that they tried to move to an upper level independently instead of connecting to Moses and Aaron.

This means that NHY (the lowest third stage of the level) immediately wanted to connect with HBD when it rose, by skipping HGT, which is the eighth day when the seven levels of HGT NHY, the seven attributes, ascend to the head (Rosh).

Moses and Aaron symbolize the head of the Partzuf (spiritual body) that is comprised of three levels: Keter, Hochma, and Bina.

The bottom part of the Partzuf includes seven levels (Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, Yesod, Malchut) of which the three lowest levels are Nadav and Avihu.

They wanted to make a correction called a sacrifice that could have brought them to a level above Moses and Aaron, but they couldn’t manage it, and so they died.

All the figures in the Torah are our inner attributes that exist in each of us.

Barren Work

Dr. Michael LaitmanM. Weisman, “The Midrash Says” Chapter “Shemini“: The moment that Nadav and Avihu decided that they should bring their own fire to the altar it says: ‘And Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censor, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord.’

The sages say that they were guilty of several breakings of the law. As was already said, they did not consult with Moses and Aaron and not even with each other first, and each one acted independently.

The right and the left lines (Nadav and Avihu) have to be inclined to try to connect to the middle line, but they didn’t do so.

Nadav and Avihu were attracted by their strong passion to actually feel the presence of the Almighty, and entered the Holy of Holiness in order to bring the censor there, etc. This means that they wanted to reveal the Creator without a Masach (screen) and the Returning Light.

Only the great priest can enter the Holy of Holiness, since he has a Masach. Therefore he is called the great priest, which means the holy priest who works in bestowal above others.

Nadav and Avihu didn’t have the attribute of bestowal (the Returning Light) and each one worked on his own: the right line separately from the left line. However, the Returning Light appears only on the middle line in the right connection between the two lines.

Question: Does that mean that they didn’t have a Masach on the pleasures that they wanted to receive?

Answer: The revelation of the Creator is an immense pleasure! This is actually the goal of creation. So the goal of the wisdom of Kabbalah is to reveal the Creator to everyone, by filling everyone with great pleasure.

Besides, the “strange fire” that Nadav and Avihu brought indirectly indicates other sins.

They drew the Light of Hochma that couldn’t be dressed in the Light of Hassadim (Light of Mercy). Without this dressing, the Light of Hochma doesn’t warm, and doesn’t save but burns. Nadav and Avihu lacked the Light of Hassadim in order to receive such great Light. They didn’t even try to receive it since they worked separately.

The Mission Of Nadav And Avihu

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Midrash says, Chapter “Shemini“: “Aaron had four sons and two of them Nadab and Avihu were not only beautiful but also had exceptional capabilities.

Beauty refers to the receiving of the Light of Hochma (the Light of life) in order to bestow.

Beauty refers to the feminine part of the soul (the left line), to the desire to receive that can work in order to bestow. But in the case of Nadav and Avihu it was revealed on the right side, since they were the sons. This means that it is actually about a mistake that is typical of youth. But youth refers to the acquisition and the initial stages of getting used to the new level.

“If we add their well known innocence and integrity, then it is clear that they should have become the future leaders of the nation. Even their names indicate greatness: ‘Nadav’ means that he is worthy of a sublime role (stemming from ‘Nevidut’ the Hebrew root ‘generosity’), and ‘Avihu’ indicates that he is worthy of becoming the father of the Jewish nation ( stemming from the same Hebrew root ‘father’).

Not only others noted their uniqueness, but they also recognized it. One time Nadav said to Avihu: ‘When Moses and Aaron are gone, we will take their place.’ And the Creator answered him: ‘We’ll see who will bury whom.’”

Question: What does it mean “when Moses and Aaron are gone, we will take their place”?

Answer: It means that the sons can ascend higher than the level of the fathers,

There is no death in spirituality. When we pass the level of Moses and Aaron, we will certainly be higher than they are and will be in their place.

Moses and Aaron are two lines, two levels, one below the other, even on the middle line. Aaron is more to the left line and Moses is more to the right line, and so they work together on the middle line. It is the same with Nadav and Avihu.

On the whole, Nadav and Avihu are really on a higher level than Moses and Aaron, but their mission is to actually signify the revelation of evil. So eventually they die, but by that they fulfill their mission. These are actually two attributes that have to be revealed on the next level above Moses and Aaron.

World Outlook Through The Prism Of Spiritual Actions

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Once, you gave us the task of translating the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale into spiritual language…

Answer: There is nothing but spiritual forces in the universe. You can take any story you want and translate it into the language of spiritual actions.

Let’s say, in the story about Little Red Riding Hood, her (grand)mother denotes Bina. The wolf represents the ego (Klipa) that wants to take advantage of the grandmother. At the same time, the wolf helps Little Red Riding Hood find the way to her grandmother.

The little girl’s questions: “Why are the wolf’s eyes, ears, and teeth so big?” show a gradual, step-by-step appearance of the evil in us, which is impossible to clarify in advance.

The hunter represents the Surrounding Light that cuts the wolf’s stomach and releases the grandmother safe and unharmed.

You can take any story and convert it into the language of spiritual actions because all of them are just external clothing on the internal processes. Any imaginary story that comes to our mind, no matter how fantastic or improbable, still has a spiritual root that describes this phenomenon.

The exercise of “Little Red Riding Hood” is based on viewing the actions that exist in this world and trying to find their spiritual roots that control the materiality. I want everybody to recognize the spiritual forces that govern everything there is.

Question: On the other hand, you constantly reiterate that everything that happens to us in the present can only be explained after we attain the spiritual roots.

Answer: If we regard this world the way I mentioned earlier, we’ll attain the spiritual roots, trying to see the spiritual forces behind every action that happens to us.

But it is not that important. What really matters is that we should combine the aspiration to reveal the spiritual forces with our efforts to connect with each other. When we start sensing that we are getting closer to our friends, that we replenish each other, connect in our intentions and thoughts, and unite in mutual support, we’ll begin controlling our feelings and relationships. Accordingly, we’ll regard the actions that take place in this world at our level as mechanical.

In fact, this is what we call the revelation of the Creator, when we govern Him, as it is said: “My sons have defeated me.”

Question: Do you think that if we regarded this world as a place that is ruled by spiritual forces we’d penetrate deeper into these issues?

Answer: Once, we were returning from a walk with my teacher Rabash, and were close to his home. There was a garbage can with a lid that opened by pressing on a foot-pedal. A horse approached the can and pressed the pedal, the can opened and the horse started eating discarded food.

When I saw this picture, I froze, but my teacher said: “Do you see it? It’s an angel.” Rabash automatically recognized the spiritual forces that rule the protein, animal bodies.

The Consuming Fire Of Love

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Midrash Says, Chapter “Shemini”: And then there was the fire of the Shechina. All Jews saw the pillar of fire descending from Heaven, entering the Mishkan, consuming the sacrifices on the altar, and settling there. Seeing this miracle, they fell down and gave praise to the Creator.

Correction of the strongest, most evil and bitter egoism manifests itself as the most powerful Light, as the all-consuming fire. Mutual hatred, repulsion, rivalry, detachment, and negation are replaced by love; however, internally everything remains the same. That’s why when two opposite properties touch, there appears the fire between them.

Moreover, this state becomes permanent and we can never get rid of it. In spirituality nothing ever disappears. When we attain a certain level, we don’t fall from it. We get additional, as yet, unrevealed egoism in which we are submerged. In general, it is not a descent, but rather an ascent along the left line. Therefore it is said, “the pillar of fire settled on the step.”

The Commandments Are Heard Only When We Reach Connection

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the meaning from the Kabbalistic perspective of each of the ten commandments, like “thou shalt not steal” or “thou shalt not kill,” etc.?

Answer: We don’t understand the true meaning of the ten commandments that simply seem like moral instructions to us.

The commandment of “honor thy father and thy mother,” for example, refers to the connection between the Partzufim of ZON (Zeir Anpin and Nukva) and the upper Aba and Ima (father and mother).

The commandment “thou shalt no steal” is the prohibition to use the desire to enjoy for my own sake, which is called stealing. Who are you stealing from? From the Light, from the Creator.

All the ten commandments refer to the right use of the desire to enjoy. It is about the limitations that we must implement on Malchut. These limitations are called a Masach (screen) and the Returning Light (Ohr Hozer). Due to the fact that Malchut accepts these limitations, it can become the clothing for the ten Sefirot, and so it is called the ten commandments.

A commandment (stemming from the Hebrew root “utterance”) is what is born in the mouth of the Partzuf, the Peh de Rosh. All these actions are performed in the world of Atzilut.

Only after we become as one man in one heart do we receive the ten commandments. Otherwise we cannot hear them. We have to be on the level of Bina in order to have the ear that can hear the ten utterances from Mt. Sinai.

First we have to go through a period of preparation and reach connection on the level of one man in one heart, and only then do we hear the commandments. Otherwise we will lack the vessels in order to understand them.

Everyday a new confusion and a new understanding are felt during the study. You ask a question and after that you may be confused a hundred times and understand a hundred times in order to bring yourself to the point where you asked the question. Everything depends on the vessels.

Question: Do these commandments, such as “thou shalt not steal” and “thou shalt not kill” operate in the corporeal world too?

Answer: Of course we need the same thing that is written on the spiritual sense in our world too, but the correction of the soul takes place in the spiritual world. Still, we have to create the right environment in the corporeal world so that in it we will be able to attain the spiritual correction.

First we must understand that the basis for all the corrections is the main rule of the Torah: “Love thy friend as thyself.” This means that all the corrections, all the details described in the Torah, are the explanations for how we should reach the fulfillment of the conditions of loving others.

My attitude to whatever it may be—to friends, to the external world, to all the spiritual worlds, to everything—has to be only out of love, to the extent that I love myself. That’s it! Every action I make has to be accompanied by the thought that I do it for others. Love isn’t just speaking the words. There must be a real desire within me that obliges me to do it. Otherwise it is not called a commandment.

Who Needs Who More?

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” (Shemini), 9:22-9:24: And Aaron lifted up his hands towards the people and blessed them. He then descended from preparing the sin-offering, the burnt-offering, and the peace-offering.

And Moses and Aaron went into the Tent of Meeting. Then they came out and blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. And the fire went forth from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fats upon the altar, and all the people saw, sang praises, and fell upon their faces.

In the spiritual world everything is built in a form of a pyramid. People are the most numerous desires, but the weakest, and the lowest ones are corrected by higher desires. Both are egoistic desires, but their correction is performed simultaneously in the connection between them. So the attribute of love and bestowal is revealed gradually as it is conveyed from the highest desires to the lowest ones by their mutual help to one another.

Here the mutual system of the Direct Light and the Returning Light operates. It is not discrete but analog, and so it doesn’t operate in phases but simultaneously from the beginning to the end. It is impossible for something to be at the beginning and for something else to be at the end because the system operates simultaneously from the top down and from the bottom up.

This is the principle of the spiritual world. In our world there are also such analog systems. The lower and the upper depend on one another and mutually complement one another and unless it spreads from the top down and from the bottom up, there will not be a full revelation of the Creator.

The appearance of the Creator to the nation is the revelation of the attribute of love and bestowal, and it has to be revealed not only in the upper levels but also in the lower levels. Eventually the feeling of the Creator, His attainment, has to be felt in everyone in the complete form. When He is revealed, the differences between everyone disappear completely.

The Creator is revealed to everyone: to Aaron, to Moses, and to the people. On the whole, it makes no difference which level each one is at. Everyone becomes equal in power and is filled equally.

The lower serve the upper, the upper serve the lower, and both serve the Creator. The Creator serves each of them and all of them together. The outcome is a closed global integral system in which everyone is totally connected. The Creator is connected to the others no less than they are connected to Him, like a mother to her children. It is just not clear who needs whom more. Eventually it turns out that everyone needs everyone.

Such a complete convention is attained in new altruistic attributes that are a result of purification and the right preparation of the offering, which means of myself. When we offer ourselves, which means that we come closer to the attributes of the Creator, He is revealed in us. What is more, He is revealed to everyone equally.

Everyone begins to understand that working for himself, for others, and for the Creator are the same thing. Any sense of the created being different in any way disappears. Everything is revealed as one world of Ein Sof (Infinity), as complete adhesion.
