Either a Servant of the Pharaoh or a Servant of the Creator

207It is written in the primary sources that when a person is in Egypt, he cannot be a Yehudi, Yehudi—from the word “Yechud”- union. A person cannot be united either with the Creator or with the other parts of the broken Kli (vessel) of Adam, while in bondage to the Pharaoh, he cannot be a slave of the Creator.

Question: And why is it better to be the slave of the Creator instead of Pharaoh?

Answer: At first, we do not know what is better and what is not. It is just that our nature pushes us toward this, the Reshimo (internal information record) does.

And then we begin to feel that by working for the Creator we unite with each other and by this we bring pleasure to Him. We can attract the upper light upon ourselves, which gives us the opportunity to rise above egoism. And then the work in altruism already becomes wanted, desirable, and possible.

Question: A person is either under the governance of the Pharaoh or under the governance of the Creator? Is he either a slave of the pharaoh or a slave of the Creator?

Answer: Yes, there is no neutral state.

Sefira—The Interaction Between the Creator and Creation

239Question: What are the ten Sefirot?

Answer: When creation begins to interact with the Creator and the relationships between them are getting filled with meaning, strength, and intention, then they are called Sefirot.

If a person attains the attitude of the Creator to him and reacts to it correctly, these ten degrees turn into the ten Sefirot. “Sefira” is from the word “luminous.”

A person begins to feel how the Creator treats him and how he should treat the Creator. In other words, there is some kind of a system that exists in potential, and when we attain it, we bring our feelings into it and this is called Sefira. Then the entire system begins, sparkles, glows, as it were.

The Nature of Creation

202Question: From where do thoughts of receiving arise in us?

Answer: The main thought of the universe, meaning, the Creator, the thought, created us opposite to Himself so that we could attain Him from this state and cloth in Him with our opposite qualities.

Question: It turns out that all our thoughts, our whole world, is the reverse side of the Creator, right?

Answer: That is exactly right. That is why our world is called “creation,” from the word “create,” that is, to create something opposite, external from oneself.

The thought we call the Creator is completely altruistic. We are absolutely egoistic. We are created by this thought as a desire to receive, and not like Him to give. But thanks to this very difference, we are something distinct from Him, exist independently, and are able to know Him from the outside, superimposed on Him.

Therefore, we come to such a state that we and He exist, and we can achieve equivalence of form with Him, while remaining opposite to Him by nature.

We cannot change our nature. Our thought remains egoistic, but we learn how to use it with the correct intention from this thought, from the Creator.

Obtain the Land of Israel

933The fact of the matter is that the Creator delivered our holy land from the foreigners and has given it back to us, yet we have not received the land into our own authority, since the time of reception has not yet come, as we explained concerning the complete attainment (Baal HaSulam,“A Speech for the Completion of The Zohar”).

We must keep trying to correct ourselves. The time and opportunity will come when we will be able to do this and will treat each other as the people of Israel should—with love and mutual support for each other, completely unselfishly.

Then we will feel ourselves truly in a country that is called straight to the Creator (Yashar El)— Israel.

“The Children of Israel Sighed from the Labor“

562.01We cannot just ask to acquire the qualities of bestowal because it is against our nature. How can I ask for something I do not know? Therefore, the Torah, Exodus 2:23, says:…and the children of Israel sighed from the labor…

They wanted to exit Egyptian slavery, that is, the control of egoism, and once they discovered that they were unable to do this, they began to shout: “How can we exit it? And if we do not exit, it will destroy us, we will remain like animals, in the intention ‘for our own sake.’ How can we rise to the level of man?” “Man – Adam” comes from the word “Domeh” –  similar to the Creator.

This is the tragedy that they felt in their condition in Egypt. Therefore, their cry rose to the Creator, and the Creator began to liberate them from slavery.

Question: Does it mean that they were not shouting because of Pharaoh’s hard work like we usually imagine?

Answer: This is the hard work: they wanted to exit their egoistic intention but discovered that they cannot. They were ready to do everything, but they could not do it. All their attempts and efforts are this scream.

Every person should reach such a state.

Study and Feel!

552.02Question: Usually, on the eve of the holiday of Passover, hundreds of thousands of Israelis go on vacation to Sinai in Egypt. Does this mean that our nature does not change like in those days when not everyone wanted to exit Egypt? Is a person preoccupied with self-gratification and self-fulfillment?

Answer: Obviously. The nature changes only in those who wish to rise above it.

Question: Can we say that 3,400 years ago a small number of people came out of Egypt, meaning out of egoism, who revealed the Creator?

Answer: No, I cannot say that. It is impossible to explain this! Because our entire world is illusionary, imaginary, and depicted in our feelings. It seems to us that it is something unshakable. But it is nothing! It is sensations that arise and disappear in us; therefore, it is impossible to bring a serious platform to it!

The only thing that is possible is to come, study, and feel for yourself.

Toward a Complete Sense of Nature

720Question: Is including the entire world into oneself the correct perception of a person? Or, on the contrary, is it the dissolving in the entire world? Can there be such extremes?

Answer: These are not extremes, but essentially the same thing. This means that I have to annul my egoism, my “I,” in relation to the world, and then I will feel that I am within it or it is within me.

The reason for the division between oneself and the entire world lies in a person’s egoism, when I divide everything I sense into “I” and something outside of me. If I gradually erase this boundary, then through leveling my egoism, I will feel the world as a part of me.

In order to perceive the world correctly, I have to annul my egoistic perception, and then I will see the world as it is. Ideally, this is, of course, a long way. It is possible to get closer to this only through connection, adhesion, and coming closer to everyone around.

Inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human levels of nature exist around us. If we get closer to them, then we are gradually coming closer to embracing all of nature so that it is fully felt by us.

During the Time of the Temple’s Existence

937Question: During the time of the Sanhedrin, a person was evaluated only in regard to spiritual crimes? What does it mean?

Answer: During the time of the Sanhedrin, people were in attainment of the Creator and that is why their crimes were evaluated only in relation to their spiritual descent. Meaning, that it was clear to a person that he cannot harm another because by doing so he harms himself.

Through the Creator, through this global force, global reason, global thought, everyone was intertwined in each other. That is why afterward, the fall from the spiritual degree was expressed in the fact that instead of love for your neighbor, hatred erupted.

And the Sanhedrin existed when everyone was, if not in love, then in mutual involvement among themselves, since this gradation is very wide. What does mutual love mean? Mutual interdependence, mutual inclusion into one another, understanding, and so on.

It was absolutely clear to people that by uniting with each other and with the Creator, they attain that spiritual life, that spiritual sensation of eternity and perfection that reigned between them then.

If in a person, because of some internal conditions, egoism that was constantly growing suddenly emerged, then he involuntarily fell and by this, caused harm to someone personally or to the society.

Then the Sanhedrin would make a joint decision on how to bring him up to the correct degree. People were engaged in that and not in humiliating and incarcerating.

This is how it was during the time of the Temple’s existence when there was a Temple in the heart of every person, which is the quality of bestowal.

The Main Thing a Person Should Do

507.05The story of the exit from Egypt includes the entire history of humanity, which is still unfinished and, to date, practically has not yet begun.

In the Torah, this is just a short story. However, the Torah itself is an instruction. It is necessary to understand how it is written. That is, exiting the slavery of your egocentric sensations is the most fundamental thing of all the Torah that a person should do.

To the Last Cry

236.01Question: It is written: “The sons of Israel sighed because of the work.” The term “Israel” refers to those who aspire to the Creator (Yashar-El). What kind of work are we talking about?

Answer: A person sighs because he cannot exit Egypt because of his egoism. But he suffers not only from egoistic thoughts and desires that are passed on to him from the Egyptians but also from the questions that arise in him: “Who is the Creator?” and “Why do I need this work?” This is what makes his work so hard.

He wants to get out of the egoistic world into the altruistic one so that all his actions are for the sake of bestowal, so that he does not ask for anything for them, but only fulfills them.

Let others receive all the reward and even so that he does not know about it and they would not know about him. This is what the person desires. Yet, he does not succeed. Then he comes to his last cry.
