The Balance between the Material and the Spiritual

506.2Question: To the extent that we have a desire for the Creator and connection, material desires for this world are revealed in us. How do we work with them?

Answer: Perform them sequentially. You cannot give up this world, but you must establish a correlation between it and the spiritual world. Try to see where you have to make a correction at the beginning and then at the end.

Question: Should this balance be in intention or in action?

Answer: In principle, we want our intentions to coincide with our actions.

Question: If I want something material, should I build the right intention or make a complete restriction on it?

Answer: No. You have to make a plan for yourself for when you exercise a spiritual intention and when you fulfill a material one.

How Is the Connection with the Creator Formed?

608.02Question: Baal HaSulam writes that when the upper light hits the screen, the screen rejects the light, so to say, meaning, a person acquires a force that gives him the opportunity to reject the pleasures coming from the Creator. This action is called Zivug de Hakaa, striking coupling.

Where does the pleasure go when the light tries to pass into the vessel?

Answer: The Light that wants to fill me acts according to its intentions. And I act according to my capabilities; I push it away. Otherwise, it will enter me, and I will receive it for myself, which contradicts the entire program of creation.

The upper light wants to enter me forcibly, it hits me, but I push it away, I don’t want to accept it. This is where the striking mutual interaction occurs. I reject the light and the light rejects me. And here we must coordinate these actions among ourselves as a guest and a host.

Meaning, the problem is how do I receive from the Creator what He wants to give despite the fact that I want to receive only for His sake. To do this, there is a  coupling while striking called Hakaa, from the word “Maka” (blow).

When the upper light comes to me from the Creator and presses me to accept and enjoy it, and I really want this pleasure but at the same time understand that I will be absolutely opposite to the Creator, then a state arises that I forcibly push the light away from me, and it goes away.

After it recedes, I have the opportunity to attract it not for my own sake, not for the sake of feeling my own pleasure, but to receive this light for the sake of the Creator. After all, He asks me for this, and I do not receive it because I can receive it for my own sake.

It turns out that the light came to me in order to fill me and delight me. I push it away and start taking certain doses of it just to please the Creator. So we form a very good connection: the Creator wants to fill me, and I want to fill the Creator.

The Creator Understands Everything

942Question: Which efforts are more important: to love and see the greatness of the friends or to focus on love for the Creator?

Answer: The most important thing is to turn to the Creator and through Him try to solve all our problems, especially spiritual ones.

Question: So what is better: to the friends and after them to the Creator, or from the Creator to the friends?

Answer: It depends on what stage you are at. But it is best to turn to the friends, and with them to the Creator.

Continue to clarify your questions with the friends and with the Creator. Then everything will work out.

Do not worry about the fact that you may not be able to ask the right question. The Creator understands everything. It is said about this: “The Creator will finish for me.”

The Special Power of Psalms

168Question: When we read the Psalms of David, we feel their special power. Can we read them as preparation for the lesson, and how will this help us open our hearts even more?

Answer: Psalms in Hebrew are called Tehillim. You can read them; it is very beneficial because it attracts a person and brings one closer to the Creator.

Psalms were written by King David, who in the general system of souls corresponds to Malchut.

Therefore, if we read them, we very strongly influence our connection with the Creator through this. All over the world, Psalms are valued as a very serious ascent to the Creator, as praising the Creator.

Question: We have disagreements about the reading of Psalms. Some people think that it is necessary to read several Psalms at a time, but even one Psalm is difficult for me. How should we read them correctly together?

Answer: I think it is better to read one Psalm slowly from beginning to end, perhaps even splitting it into two or three parts. You can read it alone and see how it affects you.

You should not read several Psalms at once, read a maximum of one. Psalms are a great power; they have a lot of energy. I wish for everyone to feel it.

Movement within Three Points

161Question: You often throw us from one end to the other. First you say we should be working on ourselves, then you say to work with people outside of our group, and then back to ourselves and round again. Is it done so that a person would not get stuck in one place?

Answer: No work should be left out for us because we are moving within the three points. It is like aiming a rifle when the eye has to be on the same line with the sight and the target; we should apply exactly the same principle. Our heart, meaning my desires, the desires of the group, of the world, and the upper stage of creation, which we call the Creator, have to be on one line. Based on this you should always look further.

For a person who is not yet even at the minimal attainment of the entire universe, his “me,” the entire humanity, and the Creator (the upper level of nature) do not align. He is unable to look in front of him at the nearest point and the farthest point simultaneously. He cannot! They are different for him; this is me and this is society.

However when he’s at least at the first rung he can see that “me” and society are the same thing, and then he can also see the Creator, the common force of bestowal that begets, holds, and fulfills the entire creation. That is when this is normal for him.

A Moment that Connects the Past and Future

232.08A person should feel how all times: past, present, and future are included in the present moment, which means that I should think what I am aiming for at this moment and how to attach all the reasons to the action that I am about to perform now.

I connect the past and the future with the present time and from this I find the most correct action for my advancement.

It all depends on my intention because now I want to perform an action in which all times, all actions, and opportunities will come together in one effort to connect.

Desire, Light and Restriction

236.01To save the created beings from this titanic separation, the first restriction took place, separating phase four from the rest of the Partzufim [plural of Partzuf] of Kedusha [Holiness] so that that great measure of reception remained an empty space devoid of any light (Baal HaSulam, Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, item 14).

The fact is that when the Creator created desire, He filled it with light, with the help of which He gave the desire the opportunity to develop. Then He made the light disappear from the desire, and it remained empty.

This limitation of the desire from feeling the light is called restriction (Tzimtzum). The light has reduced itself, withdrawn from the desire it created, and is, as it were, outside of it.

Then the Creator makes the light enter the desire in accordance with the action of the desire itself: “Ask me, and I will enter you. Ask me and I will fill you. Ask me, and I will come closer to you, I will shine upon you. Then you and I will become partners.” This is what the light wants from the created desire.

Here, a certain system of interaction and interrelationship arises between them. From this state onward, we can already talk about creation and the Creator, about desire and its fulfillment. This is practically the entire wisdom of Kabbalah, which studies how the creation receives fulfillment from the light and how it regulates the filling with the light inside itself.

Jump into a Good Future

935The difference between past, present, and future is only in the strength of our connection. If we connect, we compress time and jump into the future.

In fact, there is no time! It is only according to our inner effort to unite that we reveal our more corrected states. This means that we exist in time.

Serve the Creator

115Question: Do I understand correctly that if the upper Malchut is not revealed at least to some extent, we have no opportunity to serve the Creator?

Answer: We have the opportunity to turn to the Creator and ask Him; this always works. The Creator is open to everyone and awaits for an appeal from each of us. The only thing is that we must be very consistent in this: ask, appeal, raise our offers, and requests all the time. And then, in relation to this, we will feel the attitude of the Creator toward us.

Question: Is serving the Creator a certain action? Can I ask and the Creator will do something through me?

Answer: Yes, the Creator will consistently carry out His attitude to others through you.

Question: And what does it mean to serve the Creator in a group?

Answer: First of all, it is the connection between you growing stronger and stronger until you merge into one common desire, and then you will discover the Creator in this desire.
