Different Demands

243.01Question: Rabash did not want to let his friends or students read Shamati because they did not have the left line. We study that Israel is the lightest, purest aspirations and desires. So why do you say that they are the roughest and the heaviest ones?

Answer: The vessels (Kelim) that need to be corrected are determined by the amount of egoistic impurities, and therefore, they are felt as particularly selfish and in need of correction first. In others it doesn’t feel that way; it seems as though nothing serious is happening with them.

Therefore, it is evident that the people of Israel stand out in their egoism relative to other nations of the world, but only because they have different demands made on them.

If these demands were the same for both the nations of the world and the Israelites, then the people of Israel would not be the most egoistic.

So it all depends on how we approach it initially and by what standards we measure.

Return to Our Roots

610.2Question: Can each of the stages of spiritual development (revelation of evil, do no harm to others, love your neighbor as yourself) take decades?

Answer: Today it takes much less.

Question: How can this be; we are all so different? There are people who may still be at the first stage and there are those who are already at the third stage.

Answer: This is the same as in our society; there are different people: rich and poor, smart and not so smart, and so on. That is, they always complement each other.

Question: Baal HaSulam explains that when a person acquires the altruistic property, meaning, the ability to unite with others and not use them for one’s own benefit, he immediately begins to feel the upper force according to the law of equivalence of properties.

He writes that contact with the upper force is the most natural state for a person. How can you explain this?

Answer: It is a return to our root, the root we came from.

Question: Is it natural for a person to be in connection with the Creator? It is certainly natural for us to be egoistic.

Answer: But our egoism also comes from there. The Creator created everything. He created evil and gave us the opportunity to correct it. In this way we move toward good.

How Can We Perceive the Attainment of the Friends?

938.07Question: Faith becomes reason after attainment. How can one convince oneself that faith is infinite?

Answer: You do not need to force yourself. Gradually you will come to realize this on your own.

Question: How can we perceive the attainment of friends, through faith or through reason? How do we attach this to ourselves?

Answer: Through connection.

Question: But if we see a friend’s attainment, do we take it as faith or as a fact?

Answer: We take it as a fact and include it in ourselves.

The Path to a Spiritual State

232.05Question: It is more or less clear what it means to go against the mind. But what does it mean to go against the heart?

Answer: It means to go against one’s feelings. A person is guided by how much he can elevate himself above both the mind and the heart. This is what constitutes his spiritual state.

By rising above these two points: Mocha (mind) and Liba (heart), a person reaches a spiritual state.

This should be felt in a person’s feelings. The mind alone is worth nothing; feelings are what matter. Thoughts and reason are secondary to desire.

The Light of Rabash

917.02Question: Was it up to you that you became a famous Kabbalist, or did you just have to come to this?

Answer: This is very difficult to explain. On the one hand, everything depends on the Creator, but on the other hand a lot also depends on a person.

As a rule, when everything has already happened and remains in the past, we say that all this is from the Creator, and the next moment I must say that everything depends on me.

Question: You are the only known Kabbalist today who can convey certain spiritual information. Is this your mission?

Answer: Rabash knew that I would not leave him. It was out of the question. But I went through very difficult, terrible, sharp states of disobedience and objections. Sometimes, I was very uncontrollable. I could not have behaved differently.

Yet, even in those states, I tried to do everything possible for him. I loved my teacher very much, but on the other hand there were moments when I hated him. It is not that I hated him. I just did not understand: “How can this be?!” That is natural.

Question: Rabash knew that you had a different soul. You probably feel the souls of your students in the same way. Among them, are there people with such a soul that must do something in the future? Does this depend on them or…?

Answer: Of course it depends on them and no one else. It did not on Rabash; he gave everything he could. Everything! What I could take at that time, I took from him. What I could not take, he instilled in me potentially, and it manifested later.

He has not been with me for many years, and all these years, what he instilled in me continues to manifest. I feel it. It is only his light. That is how a Kabbalist works.

How not to Get Confused?

13.03Question: When we say that there are phenomena that can destroy us, that is, the Creator gives some kind of exercise that I have to disagree with, how can I not get confused here?

How can we on one hand agree and accept, and on the other hand to disagree with something that destroys us. What kind of support and priorities can there be?

Answer: The most important thing is that there should be no mutual hatred. That is, work on what attracts you to each other.

And then gradually the negative qualities themselves will move away from you, and the positive ones will manifest themselves. That is the way to act.

Don’t Neglect any States

238.01If it is said that “There is none else besides the Creator,” then how can a person act independently? The only action of a person is that from time to time he feels and attains more and more that there is no one else besides the Creator, there is no other force in the world that can give and do something—only Him.

You should not neglect any states, but rather, you need to connect them all together into a single desire, a special decision, into one collective Kli (vessel). Then we will see that this Kli has a unique form in which the Creator, the ultimate purpose of creation, is revealed, and we all become included in it.

The concept of time is important here. A person needs to try to always be connected to what is felt in the heart and to let this feeling lead him to the goal, to connection above reason, against the arguments of reason. But he still keeps going and gradually begins to understand what is required of him and how he should prepare himself to reach a state that is called spiritual, above reason.

The Miracle of Revealing the Truth

572.02A miracle happens, and a person begins to reveal their first connection with the Creator. They feel that they have now reached a special spiritual state where the contact with the upper force is revealed to them.

A person does not know in advance that this will happen, but one continues to strive toward the Creator for a long time and desires to reveal a connection with Him. It is called a miracle because it comes suddenly, without any apparent signs of approaching, and reveals itself suddenly like a gift.

A person is required to make efforts toward this revelation, but in doing so, they see no connection between their requests and what they receive in their understanding and feeling at the moment of the revelation of truth.

Without Benefit for Myself

629.4In Kabbalah there is such a term: from “for my own sake” to “for the sake of the other” (“Mi Lo Lishma—Lishma”).

That is, correction begins with egoistic intentions: I want to get closer to a friend in order to reveal the Creator because I understand that in this system I will have eternal life, I will be able to justify everything.

This is the second stage after the recognition of evil, but it is still egoistic. And then, under the influence of the upper light, the force of the Creator, His emanation, His nature, we begin to change.

That is, a person acquires such an ability when he can already bestow and connect with another without any benefit for himself.

This is already the third stage, a real altruistic property because bestowal becomes a reward for us. As Baal HaSulam writes, everyone should work to the best of their ability and receive only what is necessary.

Questions about Spiritual Work—138

546.02Question: What does it mean to light a fire in the heart?

Answer: Kindling the heart means that it represents all the thoughts and aspirations you want to raise to the Creator, to heaven.

Question: Why does our corrected connection establish freedom from the angel of death?

Answer: Because we rise in the quality of bestowal. And the angel of death is a quality of reception. As he affects us, all the light disappears.

Question: What does it mean that the connection is shining for us?

Answer: This means that the light of Hochma comes to us in the dressing of the light of Hasadim.

Question: What is the best way to overcome some kind of calmness or indifference not directed to the Creator?

Answer: We must somehow pull ourselves out of this indifference.

Question: To come to the connection in the ten, should everyone have the same desires?

Answer: No, the desires can be different, and should all strive for the same action and be mutually connected.
