A Black Point Is A Point Of Making Efforts

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom Rabash’s article “The Matter of the Returning Light”:

A student who is exiled, his teacher is exiled with him.” Therefore when the lower doesn’t see any greatness in the upper, the lower doesn’t even have smallness.

Thus the lower first has to believe that there is an upper in reality, and that he doesn’t feel the upper because the lower doesn’t see the greatness of the upper.

Therefore, when a person begins to observe that the greatness of the upper, which is called that the AHP of the upper, ascends, the lower also ascends and begins to attain the feeling of Godliness.

A person has to constantly feel and imagine that he is in AHP of the upper. A person’s height is measured according to the connection between the lower level and the upper. We don’t feel the presence of the upper level at all, as if we are all alone in the world. This is called unconscious existence without any spiritual recognition, without the recognition of the upper.

We are in the upper, but we don’t know or feel it. Therefore, we have to make different efforts in order to feel the upper level. We have to be incorporated in it at least as a black point, which in the meantime has no feeling but makes an effort by trying to feel the upper.

The main thing is to make an effort. The problem is that we are waiting for the revelation to come from Above. But how can it come from Above if all of creation has intentionally descended and spread from the top down through different levels so that we will have an opportunity to exert ourselves.

We, however, wait for the Creator to exert Himself instead. This cannot be! Thus we are prolonging the time by waiting for something that will not happen. Days and years go by until in the slowest human pace of natural evolution all the Reshimot (reminiscences) we have to correct accumulate and operate on us in the form of blows and troubles, and then we finally wake up.

But this is already the ordinary, natural way, in its time (the path of suffering), whereas I will hasten it (the path of the Light) means that we look for and try to locate the AHP of the upper we are in by ourselves.

The Lack Of Consensus

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Could you please tell us how you decided to take on the mission of disseminating Kabbalah widely in the world, so that we can follow your example?

Answer: Today, you have no other choice since you live in another generation. I was still in a transition time, standing with one foot in the time where Kabbalists of all generations lived preparing their students in small groups, hidden from everyone else.

So it was with my teacher Rabash, before my arrival. Then I came along and changed that place. At the beginning, his entire family greeted me very warmly because I took care of him.

But they quickly cooled towards me because through me, forty absolutely secular people from Tel Aviv came to study. In the religious area of Bnei Brak, it was uncustomary to have these kind of students and it cast a shadow over their home. Rabash was the only one who was happy about the new students, but all his family members were upset.

I was still in the transition process and in some way helped this revolution begin. But today, you live in a different era and in a new generation. So, you only need to unite with each other and pull the whole world towards this, beginning with the closest, tightly knit circles to wider ones.

Otherwise pressure and blows will outpace your progress and will roll with great speed, not as it was in the last century. Politicians and sociologists say that the main problem today is the health of society, and the entire political struggle will be carried out around this issue.

But no one but us has the means of improving society; all other ways have long proven to be ineffective. Humanity was obliged to check them out and find out that they not only do not help, but harm.

Thus, we are shown that the entire society can succeed only through the path of Kabbalah. And if we do it together, then improvement will affect all areas of the life of the nation, such as safety and education.

Question: How can we ourselves make such a decision to really make this step?

Answer: I cannot decide for you! You are looking at me and waiting for me to say something. But I have nothing more to say. I say what to do and the implementation is up to you.

Question: What stops us from making this decision?

Answer: It should be a consensus that you have decided, committed, signed an agreement with each other, and then demanded each other to perform this action.

Short Stories: Abraham’s Rough Path

Dr. Michael LaitmanIt wasn’t easy for Abraham to disseminate his ideas since most Babylonians were against his method.

He believed that everything stems from one force, although it later splits into many opposite forces that have no free will.

The Babylonians, however, claimed that there are several forces that managed the world and that they were all connected by a system of different mutual relationships. The mythologies about different gods that fight one another, devour one another, have children, and so on emerged from this basis.

Abraham refuted all these beliefs, but at the same time he understood that he would not be able to lead all of Babylon. This was the dramatic situation in which he found himself. According to his method, it is possible to attain the goal of creation only when every person in the world recognizes and realizes that there is only one way to reach one form which we create among us by connecting into one whole. The main point is the internal unity among us, despite the heterogeneity of our corporeal bodies.

We have to take care of the body, give it what it needs to maintain its existence, so that rising above it, one engages in the connection and unity between us and advances towards the goal. This is called the evolution of the human being within us. Moreover, this human being is our general image.

By uniting internally among us, we receive one general image called Adam (man – with the same root as “Domeh” –  one who resembles the Creator), which was the same name given to the first person to investigate the spiritual world.

Abraham went through a rough path before he discovered the method of spiritual connection and unity. His first teacher was his father Terah who taught him according to Noah’s method. Terah believed that paganism is justified and Abraham tried to accept his views until he rebelled against his teacher. This is the dramatic breaking point, the disagreement with the teacher, when the student outdoes his teachers by ascending to a level above.

On the other hand, however, Terah tried to force his teachings on Abraham and showed him all the bad qualities and the evil in polytheism after which Abraham could find the right way. He realized that only one force of goodness and love manages the world, and it includes the evil force, only so that it will be used to ascend above evil.

By discovering this, Abraham became an innovator, a revolutionist, who changed the course of history and showed humanity the right path.

Like Sheep Facing Wolves

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: After the First and Second Temples were destroyed, did the Jewish people feel and remember their foundation established by Abraham? Did the people of Israel remember around what they were created and consolidated? Did this foundation live among them?

Answer: Yes and no.

After the destruction of the Second Temple, the people fell from seeing the inner picture of reality, the managing forces, everything that happens in the world, and again found themselves in mutual hatred, mutual rejection, and mutual distance from each other, with an indifference that characterizes us even today.

Exiled from the land of Israel, we passed through many lands and turned to the West, to Europe, to the East, to the Arab nations, and we began to sink into apathy. Since then, what has held us together is not the power of love, nor belonging to one idea, not mutuality, not connection, and not mutual help without any calculations, but only the desire to survive. We were stuck to each other like sheep flocking together and facing wolves, but we didn’t hold ourselves together.

Basically our situation has been like this throughout the entire exile until this very day, which is the entire two thousand years.

Question: What role did religion fulfill in this?

Answer: Religion helped people in this state of absolute detachment from spiritual sources, from understanding, from everything. It simply strengthened and supported them in this low and abject state so that people could be involved in carrying out some kind of worldly activities, also called Mitzvot, and thus would maintain themselves in this manner. Religion is what is left and what was given to the people after the destruction of the Temple, instead of the wisdom of Kabbalah.

The wisdom of Kabbalah opens the heavens, reveals the Creator, and reveals the power of unity to the people. Through realizing it between them, they discover the Creator, who is found among them, and who makes it possible for them to live within a sensation of a completely different reality.

And when all of this was lost, we acquired our present form. This pertains to everyone, except for a few Kabbalists in every generation who wrote books and developed this method, and who continue to work to attain the Creator and unity between us.

Different Levels, One Essence

Dr. Michael LaitmanTorah, Leviticus (Ki Tazria) 13:18-20: And when the flesh hath in the skin thereof a boil, and it is healed, in the place of the boil there is a white rising, or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the priest. And the priest shall look; and, behold, if the appearance thereof be lower than the skin, and the hair thereof be turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy, it hath broken out in the boil.

White is the Light of Hassadim (Mercy), and red is the Light of Hochma (Wisdom), in other words, the right and the left lines that are essential for the revelation of the essence of this desire.

Torah, Leviticus (Ki Tazria) 13:21: But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and it be not lower than the skin, but be dim, then the priest shall shut him up seven days.

Comment: On the whole, this is a repetition of what we already have said.

Answer: There are many repetitions in the Torah in general, since all the levels that make up ten Sefirot are similar to each other, but different chapters refer to different levels, and so the language constantly changes. However, the essence of the one problem, the ego, remains the same and so the solution to the problem is also just one: to determine exactly what is corrupted, and to ask and receive from above, the power of correction that matches it.

Question: Does the intention refer to holding on constantly in my thoughts to this picture, which, in a movie, is called the main act?

Answer: It isn’t the main scene, but an ordinary scene and there is nothing other than that.

It changes, however, since in the transition from one desire to another, you fall into egoistic use and then begin to realize and wish to correct things. You are looking for a way to do that as if there were never anything. Once again, you find a group, and once again, you begin to correct yourself according to the right environment.

In fact, the same thing repeats itself, but on a new level each time, and so it seems totally different. For example, I studied geography every year in school, and everyone thought that it was seemingly the same material over and over again. But, I saw how the study became increasingly deeper. First, we studied the ordinary division of states and continents, and then about physical geography, nature, and the demography and industry in different countries. This means that each year the acquisition of knowledge becomes deeper, although the material may seem the same on the whole. It is the same thing here because we study the same thing.

The Wisdom Of Kabbalah Is Scientific Research On An Experimental Basis

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam speaks about the wisdom of Kabbalah as being about “scientific research on an experimental basis” (in the article, “The Peace”), for this is correct, this is truly so. The wisdom of Kabbalah has the same approach as every science in this world. What is different is the subject that I investigate and the tools that I use. But, the general rules and principles are identical, and the main one being: “A judge only has what his eyes see.” (Baba Batra 131a)

Someone could come and persuade me that red is black. But I see that this is red, and so I write in my research that it is red. This means that I believe only what I see. One researcher says one thing, a second says something else, and eventually this is compiled into some kind of knowledge that everyone accepts. In principle, all of science is based upon statistical data. This approach testifies to conclusions on an experimental basis making it possible to gather all of the data and come up with some kind of general rule.
But in the wisdom of Kabbalah, there are no statistical methods where one scientist does many experiments and eventually decides that this seems to be the result. If some data is discovered by a Kabbalist, this is already an absolute fact, according to his Kelim and his level.

This is even though the next Kelim and level will reveal this as having been a mistake and the truth will be revealed. And then in the next Kli and level, this will be revealed as a mistake and the next as truth. This is always what happens during the transition from level to level.

So there is no absolute truth, except for what you are investigating at present. You investigate the Creator as an absolute, until He is revealed.

Question: You say that the wisdom of Kabbalah is based upon personal experience. So what does “faith in the sages” mean in their attainment?

Answer: This is what is accepted in any regular science. If you are the student of a great scientist, then they respect you too. You already belong to his school. This means that it is clear who you are, meaning who formatted you, who made you a scientist. This is called a teacher.

And in the wisdom of Kabbalah this is even more important, for the student receives all of the Light, all of the power from above to below through the teacher, and that is always how this continues.

A Listening Device Given By Nature

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can a teacher feel the audience in order to understand that it has moved to a qualitatively new level so he can present difficult, serious material?

Answer: I just feel the people around me. Moreover, not only those who are sitting in the audience, but also those who are listening to me in different parts of the world.

As they say in espionage: “The enemy is listening.” How do you know he is listening? There are devices that determine that he is on your line, that he absorbs your energy.

I feel the same. It guides me when I switch from laughter to an argument, to something more serious, and then again to humor. I am in such a state as if I float in the water, and the waters fluctuations, i.e., the masses who are listening to me, move me from side to side.

This is the teacher’s essence when he feels the audience, starts to work in unison with it, and together they reach such a motion, like in the tango.

On The Path To Enlightenment

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: It is said: “Buy faith from the Rav (Teacher) and follow him. And you pray that you have the spirit like the Rav does. This is how spirituality is bought.” What does this mean?

Answer: The belief in the teacher means believing in what he says and performing his recommendations without questions.

Everything I say, I say for you. Anyone who hears and accepts this is advancing.

I do not have any claims to those who refuse to listen to me; it is their own business. But if you want to be tied to me and follow me, you must listen to what I say.

Because on the spiritual path your eyes will always be closed, you will always follow me. They will be opened when you ascend to your next degree, and you will be rising to your next degree with the eyes closed again. This is called “faith above reason.”

Under The “Covering” Of The Teacher

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can one have a constant demand in relation to you, in relation to the teacher? As long as you are near, all concerns and anxieties somehow disappear.

Answer: I suppress them! When you are near me you are under me like a child under his mother’s skirt. You feel that everything is okay. The Light, the Creator, fills everything and everything is quiet, calm, peaceful and there cannot be anything bad. You are covered with a protective umbrella.

There is nothing to do. I am telling you this from what I experienced with Rabash. I had an awesome situation. I was by his side almost 24 hours per day, except for two or three hours of work. And that is how it was for many years. The sensation is created that you are under a covering, where you are like a baby in his mother’s arms. Do anything that comes to you, everything will be okay. You can completely forget about all your problems. There isn’t any radio or television and nothing is going on around you. It is as if you are floating in jelly.

Comment: But you are still not relaxed. The questions that have been bothering you for years don’t disappear.

Answer: They don’t disappear, but they seem completely different. You understand that they are solvable and necessary. They are for your own good as compulsory elements of the whole picture. So they aren’t frightening.

Question: How can one arrive at the right decisions without your covering?

Answer: Without my covering, you can arrive at the right decision. With the covering you can’t. You are always relying on my involvement, my part in your lives.

Question: But decisions are still being made according to personal interest, what is useful in that situation?

Answer: You can decide what you want. What difference does this make? Do you really think that your decisions somehow influence anything? The main thing is to arrive at an understanding that all of your decisions can only be made with adherence to the teacher. Then you can make them correctly. There is no other situation that will establish greater closeness to the Creator.

Question: How can one develop a permanent vital need for adherence with you?

Answer: To have a need for adherence with me, you must understand that I am your higher Partzuf. I am the same creature as you are, except with an even greater ego (because I am higher than you), but I have already corrected it somewhat. How much it is corrected is not important, as you will not discover this.

By taking into account that I am higher than you, you direct yourselves towards my being the next level above you. I might be two thousand levels higher, but what is important for you is that I am on a level higher than you. Being close to me means carrying out my recommendations.

Question: But what if one hears only one in a million of all your recommendations?

Answer: Try to carry out at least what you hear and discuss it with your friends: “He said this, what of this should we do, should we accept this for ourselves, or should it be for others?” and so forth. Try to approach the higher Partzuf like this. Approach happens according to equivalence of desires, intentions, and direction and nothing else.

We learn about the state of the Partzufim from the wisdom of Kabbalah: Galgalta ve Eynaim and AHP enter one into the other and that is how they work. A teacher is simply the next Partzuf. He is a little bit higher than you, and this is enough.

Question: Should even vital questions like choosing an apartment still be decided in a group, in a workshop?

Answer: If you want, you can decide this question in a workshop too. It could be that you will find a better answer there. But we are talking about the spiritual path.

The Teacher Is A Kind Of Transmitter Of Spiritual Energy

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can a woman begin to love the spiritual teacher?

Answer: I think that it is much easier for a woman than for a man since she feels no internal resistance or conflict with the teacher. To love the teacher means to love the source of your spiritual existence. In fact, the teacher is a kind of a transmitter of spiritual energy, but for you, it is the source. It is like parents who are the source for their baby because everything the baby receives, he gets from them.

It makes no difference whether it is a man or a woman with regard to the teacher. There were times when a woman for many years was the leader of the Israeli nation, its spiritual leader, the teacher, and those were actually years when the whole nation was on a spiritual level. This indicates that people are simply detached from their external wrapping. Today it is very hard to imagine it.

In the past many prophets were women: Deborah, Huldah, and others. A prophet is a person who is in a direct connection with the Creator. What difference does it make whether it is a man or a woman? We shouldn’t regard the teacher as a man, but as the source of the power, the information, and the filling, like an upper Partzuf. This will come gradually.
