It Is Impossible To Get To Spirituality Without A Guide

749.04Without faith in the sages, it is impossible to reach faith above reason and connect with the Creator. After all, there is no direct connection between our egoistic desire and the desire to bestow.

Since we are inside egoism, we are not able to jump into the desire to bestow, and we do not even understand what it is or how to approach it. Therefore, we need a guide who can take us from the sensation of this world to sensing the upper world.

We are in this world, that is, in the desire to receive, and we feel the world only through it. Egoism determines all our qualities, controls our heart and mind. At the same time, we want to feel reality in the desire to bestow.

However, we do not know what the desire to bestow is and how to develop it in order to feel another reality, as it is said: “I shall see an opposite world.” We need to undergo a special transition, which can take a long time and include many intermediate states between this world and the next one, the dominion of the desire to receive and the desire to bestow.

Such a transition cannot happen at once but according to what has been said: “Only goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”

Therefore, we need a sage who lives in both worlds at once and can teach us how to make such a transition. Not everyone who is in attainment of the spiritual world is able to be such a guide. This requires consistency in feelings and understanding, in understanding both worlds, and knowledge of how to make the transition from one world to the other step by step.

The property of this conductor is called Moses. On one hand, he is in the qualities of the Creator, and on the other hand, as a “loyal shepherd,” he can take on this mission to guide people, disciples, from this world to the spiritual world and fulfill the Creator’s instructions.

Faith in the sages, meaning the teacher on the spiritual path, is the same as believing in the path itself, believing in the Creator and in all the actions we perform. Success depends on how much I adhere to the teacher and follow him. As if on a serious hike when you go through an unknown area fraught with danger, on untrodden paths, you need to have suitable clothes and shoes, a proper staff in your hand, follow the one who is going in front of you, and follow the trail of the one in front of you. Then you can move forward with confidence.

This is the first rule that a beginner must learn when entering the spiritual path, an untrodden road, unknown and perplexing to him. Therefore, the first to walk is a person who has a lot of experience and has already walked this path himself. But those who follow him do not know the way.

It is customary to do so in a corporeal hike and even more so in a spiritual one because there we do not know at all what we should do in order to make a single right step forward. Moreover, egoism always confuses us and leads us astray. Therefore, we need to have as many clear indicators as possible to help us move forward without stumbling and falling.

The Connection With The Teacher

961.2Question: How can we know that we have a connection with the teacher?

Answer: If you participate in the lessons and follow my advice all the time, then you already have a double connection with me. After all, you receive the method from me and you try to implement it between you and return to me with questions.

This is your connection with the teacher. It is conveyed through an external connection to an internal connection, and you begin to feel it.

Question: Can people who have no connection to the wisdom of Kabbalah at all open up new horizons for me in understanding the wisdom of Kabbalah and in understanding myself?

Answer: Absolutely not. They will begin to delve into psychology or philosophy, into the philosophies of the East etc., but not into the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Baal HaSulam says that the only way to attain the wisdom of Kabbalah is through a Kabbalist teacher. I met a Sufi sage in England once.

In my meeting with that sage he also told me: “If you wish to study with me, you need to love me.” This means that everything is based on the connection between the teacher and the student.

The Kabbalah Teacher And The Public

254.01Question: What is the significance of the recognition of a Kabbalah teacher by the general public? What does society understand about that?

Answer: Today this is really rather meaningless, but 2,000 years ago when there were quite a few Kabbalists and groups of people who could acknowledge a certain Kabbalist or not, it was meaningful.

As Baal HaSulam says, for King Solomon to be acknowledged as wise, he had to stand before the Kabbalists of the great Knesset (assembly) because other people could not verify it since they were not on such a high level.

Today, however, when people don’t know about the wisdom of Kabbalah, and moreover, they deride it, people may say that someone is a Kabbalist only according to their judgment, according to who they choose to celebrate, and so it is quite meaningless.

Everything is determined by what the teacher teaches you. If he teaches you not to be connected to him, but to the primary sources and through the group to the Creator so that you will see the meaning only in that, then his teachings are correct.

The Multifaceted Work Of A Kabbalist Teacher

165Question: What does a teacher of Kabbalah do so that his students will learn to feel spirituality correctly and respond to it correctly?

Answer: It is not important for a student to know this. He sees that his teacher gives lessons every day, that he awakens the students with his questions, and tries to guide them toward the goal of creation, to build mutual connection between them so that they can carry out what Kabbalistic sources say.

The teacher teaches the students to work with the sources and to extract questions and answers from them. He shapes the students so that they will be able to work independently. So the teacher’s work on the students is multifaceted, but this is education.

Following The Teacher Who Sees The Way

750.03Maimonides has already given a true allegory about that: “If a line of a thousand blind walk along the way, and there is at least one leader amongst them who can see, they are certain to take the right path and not fall in the pits and obstacles, since they are following the sighted one who leads them.

But if that person is missing, they are certain to stumble over every hurdle on the way, and will all fall into the pit.” (Baal HaSulam, “Introduction to The Book of Zohar,” Item 57)

Question: Is it possible for a person who has already found a teacher and has begun to follow the right path, to later fall off track?

Answer: This indicates a lack of connection with the teacher. A student must constantly keep this connection alive. If he doesn’t renew it, the teacher continues to move forward, while the student gradually moves to the side on a tangent until the connection between them is totally lost.

It is very interesting to observe this process, how a student hears less and less, comes to the lessons less and less, and then disappears.

The main thing is that the teacher cannot say anything about this to the student. The student must scrutinize this himself and understand how to operate in mutual cooperation with the teacher.

But it must be clear to him, that the moment he does not hold on to the teacher, like a child who holds onto a grownup, he doesn’t know where he is. After all, there are many situations when he is like a small child who is lost in a crowd, and doesn’t know who to hold on to and where to go. He must acquire this feeling of closeness or detachment from the teacher.

Devotion To The Teacher

582.01Question: How can there be a connection between a teacher and a student without devotion? Weren’t you connected to your teacher?

Answer: Devotion doesn’t necessarily have to be physical. Being in the same group doesn’t mean that you have to sit in front of me.

Besides, a lot depends on you. Personally, I don’t get close to any individual student; I am close to everyone. However, a student may try to be connected to me by getting closer to me and this is how the contact is created.

This contact has nothing to do with visual images, neither mine nor his. The person can be a man or a woman, an elderly person or a young one. It makes no difference how and what. Everything depends only on the desire, on the extent to which our desires match in their yearning for the common goal.

Tools Of The Spiritual Teacher

588.03Question: Which tools does a spiritual teacher use in order to focus and fine tune my internal attributes?

Answer: First it takes place only during the lesson in which we discuss different topics together, when students ask and the teacher explains. When the students interact with the teacher and try to understand him in depth, they seemingly enter him, and try to connect with him emotionally and not mentally.

Emotionally means in their desires, as it says: “make your desire like his desire.” This connection is very important. You don’t need to be physically close to the teacher in order to do that. You don’t need to be in direct contact with him and to sit in the same building with him.

I, for example, have a very good connection with the group in Santiago. I feel how close they are to me despite the physical distance.

There are groups that I have known for a long time, but which I don’t feel so closely, since it depends on the internal yearning for connection with each other.

Generally speaking, you need to understand that the teacher aspires for that and is ready for it, although he can also be blunt and tough. After all, it is an absolutely precise act with regard to the student. Everything is determined only by the need to be in mutual contact so that you will receive spiritual energy from me, the feeling, the understanding, the connection between what we study and our internal world, our actions.

Virtual Communication Advantages

962.5Question: What are the differences between face-to-face and virtual methods of teaching?

Answer: Today, my teaching is also education. In principle, it has always been like this. Our study is based on mutual communication between everyone; me with students, students with me, questions and answers, and all kinds of discussions.

Therefore, I, from the beginning, warmly welcomed the Internet that has given us this opportunity. Back in the 90s, we created the first Internet site for the wisdom of Kabbalah in our region.

Question: What do you personally consider to be the advantages and disadvantages of virtual communication?

Answer: I see only advantages in this. After all, as a teacher, I can communicate with many students directly in real time and thus have the opportunity to teach thousands of people whereas, at one point in time, I could only teach a few dozen.

Appeal To The Hearts

232.1Question: Charisma is a special endowment, an exceptional personality in intellectual, spiritual, or any other respect, an ability to literally appeal to hearts. You are a very charismatic person. Can you advise how to be like that?

Answer: I do not think I am fortunate enough to attract others. Not at all.

I rely on science, which speaks of the universe, of all the worlds combined, including the upper force that governs the entire universe. And I slightly open the way to this enormous knowledge for everyone that wants it.

I do not have any charisma, I do not want to command, I do not want to attract. Maybe sometimes I can be harsh or rude, but this refers to the desire to be understood correctly and to only follow the path I am walking.

It seems to me that if a person has a goal, then he can captivate others with it. In general, you need to do what is closest to you, what your soul desires. And then you will give a good example to others.

Does The Appearance Of The Teacher Interfere With Perceiving Him?

592.04Comment: Some researchers state that 50% of information between people is transmitted, not verbally, but by facial expressions and gestures, 38% by voice intonation, and only 7% directly through words. From this, they conclude that the most important thing is how you look and not what you say.

My Response: We live in a material world. The people I teach are in various material and spiritual states. Therefore, one must take into account their ability to be close to the source of the information.

They can be repelled by the lecturer’s behavior, his image, his language, maybe his smell, etc. That is, there is a whole complex process of communication here involving words, facial expressions, gestures; communication occurs through whatever you want.

These factors must be taken into account and expressed in such a way so that the learner or person who you want to convey the information to can be as close to you as possible without having to make additional efforts to overcome all sorts of barriers between you.

Question: During teaching, is it important to you how you look and what you say? Are you careful with every word you say?

Answer: Firstly, I am dealing with students who have known me for more than one year, more than even ten years.

As for scientists with whom I often engage in conversation, they are very simple in their communication. Today, they are no longer as arrogant and vain as they were 30 to 40 years ago. They now understand how limited science is and how it depends on our understanding of nature because it acts within a very narrow framework that is set by human psychology.

Therefore, now, it is much easier to talk to them since they are ready to scrutinize all sorts of aspects of their science in the most simple way. I’m very happy about that. This happened not so long ago, about 10 to 15 years ago. They have a common feeling that there are no “sacred cows”; it is very easy to communicate with them freely, without any “gloves.”

Question: Do you think that facial expressions, gestures, and appearance are important when transmitting information?

Answer: Every year they become less and less important. Look how much simpler scientists have begun to dress.

Question: Why is it that such a small percentage of communication is allotted to words? Do you agree that words are rather difficult for a person to comprehend?

Answer: This is the way we are made. We perceive the biggest amount of information through our sight, a little less through our hearing, and even less through our taste, smell, and tactile sensations.

Question: What are the most effective methods of transferring information? Do you know?

Answer: From heart to heart, but this is a different technique.
