Only Together Can We Reach the Goal

749.01Question: What does the understanding of mutual guarantee include? Can you describe it a little bit?

Answer: Just like with mountain climbers: only together can we reach the goal. I have to think of you as myself, as equal. On equal terms! I am rooting for your every move like I root for myself.

Comment: It is understandable with mountain climbers because otherwise they will fall, and they see it. But here you constantly return to the tastes of this world, and they make you happy.

My Response: This is part of the same program of mutual support, mutual awareness that we are moving forward in this state and must hold each other. We have to realize this. And there should also be mutual support in this; that is, simply concern for what is happening to others, because without that, you will not reach your goal.

And then suddenly, under the influence of the upper light, you start to feel a feeling for them that they become important to you, more important than yourself.

It is just like in our world, when you start caring for someone else’s child, and he becomes important to you, you start loving him. This is the influence of the upper light.

Question: But is it not an obsessive anxiety when they try to force you where to go: now to the right, then to the left?

Answer: No. Try it.

All the Problems Are Because of Me

249.01Comment: As a rule, a person associates himself with good people and not with murderers, perverts, or maniacs. Why do those kind of people even exist?

My Response: Each of us has negative qualities, and that is why they exist in the world. Any pathological manifestation of anything appears in some individual because he is a collection of all our negative qualities.

There is a rapist living in me, in you, and in millions of other people, but we restrain ourselves. The desire for violence gathers into one big force, is invested in one person, and he performs this function. If we did not have this in each of us, there would not be a rapist. And so it is in everything else. This is how we complement each other. But there are people in whom it manifests itself in a special way in full force.

Question: What is their role anyway? Let’s say wolves eat animals, but they eat sick animals. And what role do those killers play?

Answer: Any negative property must manifest itself in our world and only then be corrected.

It cannot manifest itself in you and in me, because we suppress such drives in ourselves. But in every person there is absolutely everything: murderers, rapists, thieves, deceivers—only in different proportions, in different percentages, in different interrelations. An ordinary person holds himself back with fear and all sorts of forces.

And there are some people who cannot restrain themselves, and they allow these properties to be realized. They are the bearers of our negative qualities, and they realize them for us. For us!

Imagine that an organ in the body is damaged because all other organs could not keep it in a state of proper functioning, and it became ill. It turns out that it is not the only one to blame. Or vice versa, this organ got sick, and it helps everyone else.

The heart itself does not hurt. There are huge disruptions to the functioning of the entire body, or to the nervous system—maybe blood pressure, and so on—and therefore this pump refuses to work. Something happens in the brain due to pressure fluctuations or due to some kind of stress. That is, there is not a single organ that would cease to function on its own; everything is interconnected.

Based on this, you need to understand that if there are any problems in the world, it is only because of me. This is what it says at the end of the “Foreword of The Book of Zohar” by Baal HaSulam. Therefore everyone should say that there is a part of him in it, and not even just a part. He must feel that with this part he has added the last percentage to 100%, and therefore a murderer has spoken from within another person, and something bad has happened.

Question: Then what is the point of punishing these people?

Answer: You are approaching a very good topic! I was waiting for this, although at first I did not want to touch it.

Now you can open the Talmud and study spiritual laws. They are prescribed based on the fact that we are all in the same system, we define each other, we depend on each other, and we are responsible for each other. Now you understand what surety (Arvut) means: mutual responsibility.

And now, based on this, we are building a new society and the laws that should be in it. It is a completely different system, a completely different philosophy.

Live in Others

423.02We must approach any manifestation of evil in the world with the mindset that I am responsible for what is happening, not just philosophically but truly.

When you perceive the entire system in which you exist not abstractly, but clearly, then any negative occurrence in the world brings about a deep realization: “This is my fault!”

Another person is not to blame: “The evil simply passed through me and reached them, and that is why they acted wrongly.”

This is what absolute mutual responsibility means; it is when no one is responsible for themselves but only for others. This is also what true love means; it is when you step outside yourself and only others matter to you.

At that point your own “I” disappears; you live within them. And there is nothing to worry about for yourself. Who are you? You are merely a manifestation within others. Your “I” is everywhere; it is in others.

And that is when you begin to feel true infinity. You fill it, and it becomes yours.

Everyone Depends on One Another

75.01Baal HaSulam writes in the article “The Mutual Guarantee” that all those striving toward the Creator constitute a single nation responsible for one another, which is called mutual guarantee (Arvut).

The Torah (the light of correction) was given to this nation only after each individual was asked whether they agreed to accept upon themselves the fulfillment of the commandment to love their neighbor as themselves, as it is written: “Love your neighbor as yourself,” meaning care for others no less than our nature compels us to care for ourselves.

This is the condition under which we can draw the light of correction. Only when we reveal a genuine desire to unite in this way will the light come and correct our spiritual vessel.

Mutual guarantee is when we already form a single body, a single organism, in which everyone depends on one another, after rising above their personal desires. For this, each person must possess an anti-egoistic screen and be on the spiritual degree of bestowal (Hafetz Hesed), and treat their corporeal life as merely a necessary foundation for spiritual ascent.

Each individual fills others and understands that he must be connected with them, after all his entire life is devoted to this purpose, just like the cells of one body. Every cell and organ of the body lives to fulfill its function for the benefit of the whole organism.

The meaning of his life is love and bestowal. When we feel such a connection between us, it is called spiritual life. If we desire to connect in this way, we will receive the strength to accomplish it!

The Force of Mutual Guarantee

943Question: The point in the heart is the next level of the development of the desire through which I can begin to feel the desires of others. How can one feel the desires of others?

Answer: With my egoism, I cannot in any way operate on the level we are now discussing. I cannot connect with others. Egoism remains egoism.

The only thing I can do is try through the point in the heart, the seed of my next, spiritual level (the quality of bestowal), which is still dormant within me, to connect with a friend. Together, we attempt to develop our connection.

Through our efforts, we receive help from above, from the governing force, and then, out of our two points, a unity emerges, a single common point. This is not just a point, but a kind of a vessel that can be filled with the upper force because it is similar to it in its qualities.

Question: How can one understand what the upper force is?

Answer: It is the benevolent governing force that determines absolutely everything. All my knowledge, intentions, desires, thoughts, and actions are generated solely under its influence.

At every moment of my existence, I must stay connected to the upper governance in everything! Apart from the point in the heart, everything that constitutes me: my perception of the world, my behavior, everything is the result of this upper governing force. There is not a single action, desire, or thought in me that is not created by it.

Question: Where can I find the strength to remain in this state 24 hours a day?

Answer: We must cultivate this state within ourselves by uniting into a group and agreeing to care for each other so that no one loses the correct intention. In this way, we draw closer to one another and to the upper governing force. One person cannot do this alone. Ideally, a group of ten people should support him.

I must always be connected to the upper force never forgetting that everything within and around me is created by it. Alone I cannot sustain this thought continuously; I forget it almost immediately because I am not similar to it.

But if we form a ten where everyone thinks about others to ensure they succeed in this, then my action is no longer dictated by egoism as much as it would be if I were solely focused on not detaching myself from the upper governance. In this case, it becomes easier for me to maintain an anti-egoistic intention because I think about others and not myself.

Egoism even allows me to care about others, to not lose the correct intention, to not fall from it, and to attribute everything that happens to the upper force.

This state is called mutual guarantee. To the extent of our efforts, the governing force helps us remain in mutual guarantee and supports us. In this way, we create a common vessel, a collective mechanism that is in contact with this force.

We are no longer talking about individuals comprising our ten but about its common intention, strength, movement, and thought, which are now in contact with the upper force. All of this occurs under the influence of that same governing force.

Mutual Guarantee as the Law of Life

929The purpose of creation is to become like the Creator, which is achievable only by correcting the soul that was intentionally broken during Adam’s sin of the Tree of Knowledge. The parts of the common soul lost their connection with each other and even became contrary to each other.

We need to put them back together into one soul starting from the lightest to the heavier ones, that is, by requiring more and more precise connection.

We always gather ten Sefirot, at first approximately, and then more precisely and carefully, which are called the steps of the spiritual ladder. The same ten Sefirot are connected more closely and precisely until they become the ten original Sefirot of the original HaVaYaH.

The general law of the existence and the conduct of the ten Sefirot is called mutual guarantee, like in an ideal human body, where all cells and systems must be in complete harmony and interconnection. This is possible only if each part knows and understands its connection with all the others.

“Mutual Guarantee” is the law of the existence of an integral system. The connection between all the parts—from step to step along all 125 steps—becomes more complex and internal. But the work begins with our accepting this principle as the only correct one; we recognize that the original HaVaYaH, the soul, is divided into ten parts and we need to start connecting it on the condition that everyone guarantees for everyone.

This is not an egoistic guarantee but a completely different one. Therefore there are many different conditions in it: everyone must humble himself before others, at the same time grow themselves in a certain way, engage in everyone and pray for them, feel responsible for everyone, and see others as a reflection of their properties.

Mutual guarantee is the general law of the entire universe. If it were not for our corrupted, egoistic perception, we would see the system created by the Creator as a limitless, ideal HaVaYaH, all parts of which are connected to each other and working as one whole.

Therefore mutual guarantee is a prerequisite for receiving the Torah and entering the spiritual ladder. If we are ready to fulfill this condition, to accept a mutual guarantee and begin to implement it, to do so we are given the Torah with the light that returns to the source. The light will do everything—all that is required of us is to agree to the condition of mutual guarantee, that is, to include each other, to connect into one system as one man.

The whole Torah is an expression of the condition of mutual guarantee in all possible forms, with all possible conditions and requirements, ever more sublime and precise from step to step.

Therefore everything we have learned about mutual guarantee and have achieved at the previous stage disappears at the next one. We fall and lose the unity and guarantee we have achieved, as if starting all over again. After all, all the conditions and laws that were fulfilled at the previous stage and were obvious, now, with a higher and more precise resolution, appear in a completely new way and seem unknown.

We have to study everything all over again, as if there were no mutual guarantee between us. Indeed there was none, because every time it is a new step. The sign of advancement is that all past success is erased, and the work begins anew.

This is the difficulty of our work, which is, in this sense, the opposite of the material one. We are not used to such conditions, and therefore they confuse and weaken us a lot. We want to see material evidence of our spiritual advancement, but this does not happen.

Our job is to constantly renew our mutual guarantee in any state, and see in it all the laws of the Torah and the laws of spiritual reality. From it we will understand the rule of loving one’s neighbor as oneself and all the laws of unification. After all, the mutual guarantee condition is the basis of everything.

Loving one’s neighbor as oneself is a consequence of the highest and most complete guarantee. To this, more specific laws of connection are added between all parts of the broken soul, which need to be collected more and more.

After we manage to collect them at the first degree and make sure it works, the mutual guarantee disappears, and we begin to achieve it again at a higher level, which is now required of us as if we had done nothing.

This is similar to how development at the inanimate level suddenly turns into a vegetative one. The vegetative level is, as it were, a consequence of inanimate development, but at the same time, has no connection with it. Later there is a leap from the plant level to the animal level, which starts from scratch again. After all, this is a new life, a new form of existence. Spiritual development occurs in the same way.

Mutual guarantee is our goal and our work. All the laws we must implement are based on this one principle of mutual guarantee.

Playing Spirituality

938.07In our world, which is built not on giving but on receiving, if we create a union of several people who wish to interact with each other in the quality of bestowal, then these people form a structure that can be influenced from outside by the quality of the Creator—bestowal.

Therefore, to begin attracting the quality of the Creator to us, we need to seemingly create a kind of quality of bestowal between us. Seemingly. In reality, it is not the quality of bestowal, but we still act as if it is. Just as children play at being adults, we as egoists, play at spirituality between us.

When each person tries to restrain their egoism and unite with others altruistically, in mutual support, this state is called the mutual guarantee. In this way, we create a certain system of forces.

Corporeal and Spiritual Union

599.02Question: What is the difference between forming a union of love and connection in the material world and in the spiritual?

Answer: A material union is based only on material benefits and promises, while a spiritual union depends solely on a shared aspiration toward a common goal.

Question: So does this mean there is no light from the Creator when people form a union in the material world?

Answer: No, there is nothing from the Creator. For that, there are lawyers, judges, and so on. They can be consulted.

Question: If our group has the sole desire to attain love for the Creator, but we are still in the material world, how can we determine that we have formed a spiritual union in the group and that the Creator is the guarantor for us?

Answer: The Creator is not a guarantor for anyone. We must be guarantors for each other. You should thoroughly study the article on mutual responsibility.

Mutual Guarantee Is the Connection between Us

935Question: How can we create the importance of mutual guarantee, concern, and the need to implement it between us?

Answer: In fact, the mutual guarantee is the connection between us. Without it, there will be no spiritual Kli (vessel) or Partzuf. Then, naturally, each of us will gain nothing. We will remain as shattered fragments of a single soul.

Therefore, the only thing we need to do is to ask for our unity. But this is only possible to the extent that we desire to rise above our egoism and unite with the friends. This is our work.

We just need to rise above our egoism, make a restriction (Tzimtzum) on it, create a screen (Masach) and reflected light (Ohr Hozer), and work with it, as with Aviut (coarseness), for the sake of bestowal. To this extent, we connect with others, form one common Kli, and act in bestowal together with the Creator.

He is above us as the general light, and to the extent of our equivalence of qualities, we contact Him and thus gain the ability to receive Him into ourselves. In this way, the creation and the Creator become one common whole.
