Become Equal to the Creator

963.5The state we are currently in, the corrupted state, appears that way only to us. In truth, we are still in the very same corrected state. Nothing has changed, as it is said: “I, the Lord, do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

Kabbalists, who reveal advanced spiritual degrees and ascend from one level to another, say that nothing changes. Everything is concealed only in relation to us and it is we who must uncover it.

This revelation is possible only through our own efforts when we truly want to return to the original state.

As Baal HaSulam explains in a letter in the book Pri Chacham, Letters, a person who ascends from the beginning of the path to his final correction (Gmar Tikkun) only attains that very same state in which he was already adhered to the Creator as a point in the root through his own effort.

By his efforts, he adds awareness, expands his perception of reality, and feels it 613 times more intensely than before.

Because previously, he was like a drop of semen, a point adhered to the Creator. But when he returns to that state through his own work, he arrives at the fullness of that level of Dvekut (adhesion) with the Creator. He becomes equal to the Creator.

This is what is meant by “ZON of the world of Atzilut are in constant coupling (Zivug) at the same level.”

Mutual Guarantee: The Decision Is Ours

938.01Question: Is mutual guarantee a correction? I cannot correct myself, so apparently it isn’t my job to come to mutual guarantee?

Answer: Mutual guarantee is achieved through the work of each and everyone together. We must come to an agreement that mutual guarantee is necessary, that without it we cannot unite, that it is a condition for uniting all desires and all souls.

If we decide we want this, then due to us being below our corrected state, we attract the surrounding light through our desire to be in it. We want to be in this state, even though we do not know or really understand what it is, but it is enough that we simply want it.

Then the force descends on us from above in the form of the surrounding light, and begins to correct us so that we, by agreeing to be guarantors for each other, come to fulfill this condition and reveal our mutual inclusion in souls.

Strictly speaking, we reveal the only existing state, and all other states in which we are currently in, as it seems to us, are just different levels of unconsciousness.

Why Did the Concept of “Mutual Guarantee” Disappear

511.01During the period of the First Temple, the leaders of the people were prophets, individuals who were in close connection with the Creator on a very special level.

The entire nation was in contact with the Creator, but the prophets were connected to Him in a unique, revealed way, corresponding to their Aviut (spiritual coarseness). They attained much more than what the Aviut developing and being corrected in the people at that time allowed.

But when the nation returned from Babylon, a different period began, called the period of the sages. There were no longer any prophecies, but there was a different connection with the upper, on the level of Mochin deNeshama (mind of the soul), yet the mutual guarantee within the nation was no longer all-encompassing. Part of the people were in mutual guarantee with one another and therefore in attainment of the upper, while another part of the nation no longer was.

This lasted until the time of the Second Temple, until even that declined and reached the level of unfounded hatred. The desire to receive had grown so much in people that they were no longer able to carry out the necessary corrections, and so the law of mutual guarantee simply ceased to exist.

The Second Temple was destroyed, and on the material level, the flaw that had arisen between souls was revealed, and the nation went into exile.

Exile is a special state in which it is impossible in practice even to carry out or desire mutual guarantee. The very concept that one must be a guarantor for another became concealed, and this idea seemed to disappear.

Strengthen One’s Choice

938.05Question: What kind of preparation is needed so that a person, together with everyone else, demands correction? Is it Arvut (mutual guarantee)?

Answer: What kind of preparation is needed for a person to want to fulfill a law? The same as with anything in life!

Let’s say I do not want to follow the law that says you should cross the street only at a crosswalk like everyone else does. I just do not want to!

The first time, someone yells at me, and I shrug it off. The second time, I get a ticket. Now I start watching when it is allowed to cross and when it is not. But if no one is around, I still cross like before. The third time, God forbid, I get hit by a car, and then I finally…

That is when I start to get a sense that maybe I should follow the law. This is called: “The Creator places a person’s hand upon a good fate and says: take it.” And the person must now strengthen himself in this because we cannot just desire spirituality on our own. But when that thought arises in us, we begin to consider: “Maybe it is worth fulfilling this law. I do not want to, but still, it might be worth it.”

This is where a person’s work begins.

We start looking for support, guidance, and the necessity of keeping this law despite our laziness, our evil inclination, our refusal to comply, and eventually we come to truly want it.

Now, the possibility of choice appears within a person. One becomes split in two ever since one was given the point in the heart. A person’s heart is entirely egoistic. It wants nothing but to fill itself and destroy anything that stands in the way of its desires. But in contrast to this, one was given a point in the heart.

We do not even know what this is or where it came from, but suddenly we begin to hear something that is opposite to our nature. This is called “a part of the Creator from above.” We can see this in people who are willing to get up at three in the morning to listen to a lesson. They begin to feel this inner split.

Now the person faces a choice: seek out advice and with its help gain the strength to resist one’s nature, which, truthfully, is not even one’s own. The Creator created the evil, meaning, the desire to receive and placed it in him. And apart from this desire, there is only the light, which is the Creator.

He created this evil in me, and now I must find some kind of support in order to rid myself of it or correct it to ensure that it no longer rules over me so that I might truly desire to fulfill the law of Arvut.

To strengthen oneself in this choice means that I am searching for a way to be free from evil, not that I am capable of doing it on my own. We cannot reach the state by ourselves of connecting our hearts, uniting into one Kli, and becoming worthy of the presence of the light in it. We must seek advice and truly want it, that is, to come to what is called a state of necessity.

Our readiness is called: “We shall do, and we shall hear.” I do not know what awaits me, I understand nothing about the state ahead of me because I am rising from a lower degree to a higher one. By definition, I do not understand that higher degree.

If I were already wise enough to grasp and feel it, I would already be on it! But if I am only about to leap to that degree, I do not yet know it. All I have is a sense of its necessity. This is called “We shall do, and we shall hear.” “We are ready. Just do something already!”

The Unshakable Principle of Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)

937The greater our will to receive grows, the stronger Arvut (mutual guarantee) must become. We can see this reflected in the course of history.

Upon the exodus from Egypt, when we absorbed an added degree of Aviut, we had to accept the first level of Arvut, known as the “standing at the foot of Mount Sinai as one man with one heart.” It was through this unity that we merited the Torah.

Later it was necessary to expand the collective participation and mutual guarantee, which expressed itself in the journey through the desert, in the division of the people into tribes, and in their respective roles as Cohens, Levites, and Israelites.

When one studies the method, it becomes clear that all of this is essentially a continuous process of correcting the same principle called Arvut, the connection into a single Kli in a corrected form where each connects with the others according to the root of their soul.

When the people reached the stage of building the Temple, they were already required to realize their connection within a country.

That is, although the internal conditions of each individual and of the people as a whole changed, the desire to receive burned ever more fiercely and kept growing, affecting also the external conditions (the people entered the Land of Israel, fought other nations, and settled in the land). Arvut had to continuously take on new forms. Yet the core idea remained unchanged: to be guarantors for one another.

Fulfill the Law of Mutual Responsibility

282.01Now, after all the corrections and all the damage that souls have undergone in their descent to the lowest degree, we must fulfill the law of mutual responsibility (Arvut). Through this, we will merit receiving the Torah, correction, and final correction.

Indeed, the greatest degree of Aviut (coarseness) is revealed in us now, and if in this state we implement this law, we will complete the entire work that souls were meant to carry out while clothed in bodies.

It turns out that mutual responsibility is the only correction we must implement. It includes all other conditions we are required to fulfill and all the qualities we must acquire in order to become a single vessel for containing the upper light.

Torah—A Pressing Need

933Throughout history, spiritual corrections occurred in order. The first to do so was a man named Abraham and a small group of his disciples. At that time, they did not need a mutual guarantee since they had a small Aviut (coarseness), and they were very close to each other since the desire to receive had not yet been revealed.

Each one of them felt the upper force, and the “advice” conveyed by Abraham was enough to be one with the Creator because they fulfilled the entire Torah due to their purity. Other nations of the world had no need for religions. In their cultures at that time there was still a certain personal attitude to nature.

Then the people of Israel descended to Egypt where they absorbed an additional desire to receive from the Egyptians.

The increase of Aviut (coarseness) in the people of Israel after their exodus from Egypt and during the period of the First and Second Temples coincided with parallel processes in other nations: Rome replaced Greece; Greek mythology collapsed along with the previous level of Aviut. In Rome, a process of forming religion began; in India—Buddha; in China—Confucius, and so on.

In other words, it is precisely the growing Aviut throughout humanity that causes the corresponding human reaction—a person begins to search.

Therefore, as their desire to receive increased, the group that had been in Dvekut (adhesion) with the Creator since the time of Abraham needed a new method to remain in that adhesion and even strengthen it, or in other words, they needed a new method in order to take another step toward returning to the state of Adam HaRishon.

Thus it became necessary for them to receive the Torah and reach a new level of connection among themselves that was different from before. They now needed a method of how to preserve the same idea of adhesion with the Creator on a new level of Aviut. This method is called the Torah.

Mutual Guarantee—The General Law of the Universe

929All of Israel are guarantors for each other. Guarantors for each other is our state when we are in Adam HaRishon, in a common soul. The state we initially existed in is a perfect state, created like this from above, and we must come to it ourselves, from below, from this world.

From the state called the soul of Adam HaRishon (the First Man), which is united with the Creator in perfection, eternity, in complete similarity to the Creator, all laws descend to us. And we, who are at the lowest level, the furthest from this state, must gradually implement, fulfill, and apply these laws to ourselves, and thus advance and return to the same state.

Thus, mutual guarantee (Arvut) is a common law that must exist between us if we want to come to correction, a state called “one soul,” from which this law, like all other laws, or “advice” for our corrections, comes to us.

Bring the Light of Faith in the Vessels of Egypt

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can a person regret the fact that he doesn’t have the power of faith when he is overcome by evil thoughts and desires?

Answer: This is why we need the light that comes from the environment called mutual guarantee. Mutual guarantee is the power of faith that is revealed in the group.

Although the group itself has not attained the power of faith yet, it is inclined to it. This is enough to impress each friend and to illuminate the force of bestowal on him that is received from the surrounding light that is drawn by our collective efforts.

This is called mutual guarantee. Everything comes down to the cooperation between two forces; there is nothing other than these two forces.

We are not fighting against the actual concealment; we only draw the light of faith upon it. There is nothing more we can do in order to fight it. The concealment will keep on growing like in Egypt where the darkness kept on growing until it became total darkness.

There is no greater darkness than the moment right before the redemption, the exit from the 49 gates of impurity. Therefore we have to relate to the power of concealment correctly and respect Pharaoh, as we understand that all the hardening of the heart and the confusion that we feel were given to us in order to advance.

We don’t want to contradict Pharaoh, the concealment and the confusion, but only to ascend above them. This means that we work with the vessels of Egypt bringing the light of faith into them.

Like Climbers in a Rope Team

943Question: A person often has a state where he tries to avoid transitioning into the spiritual. That is, his egoism pushes him away, and makes him take some steps of retreat. How can one avoid making a mistake here and still go against his ego?

Answer: This must be done in advance. The moment you miss it, nothing will help. Egoism will still trick you, drag you in, distract you, and you will not be able to escape it. Therefore you must always protect yourself in advance, like a climber who is in a rope team with others. Without this you cannot do anything; such a connection is essential.

Moreover, it must be constant, every second. In Kabbalah, you fall every second, and without this connection, you fall into the abyss, and then you have to climb back up. This takes a lifetime. That is why a person does not manage to achieve spirituality, let alone advance through 125 steps.

Everything is created very clearly and logically when you act correctly. It is the law of nature. There are no concessions from the Creator here: “You are so small my beloved; I will make everything okay.” No! Here the force of bestowal and the force of reception are opposed to each other. And you must find the right connection between them and act clearly. This is the law!

It is not like in our world where from our weakness we constantly create anti-natural conditions for ourselves. Nature has no mercy as we imagine it. To receive what I do not deserve is what we call mercy, but this is wrong. Why should it be like this? “Because I am so beautiful.”

If we understood the essence of nature and how we should behave with it, we would truly succeed, justify the Creator’s actions, and not wait for some favors. It is exactly like in the saying, “We should not wait for favors from nature.” We should not wait for it to show mercy toward us, but we should study its laws and clearly reproduce them within ourselves. And then there will be no problems. We will see how perfect and eternal it is and become similar to it.

Question: What could be the solution for a person to prepare himself in advance?

Answer: It is only in connection with others, only in a state of mutual guarantee. And this is given.
