“Tisha B’Av And The Building Of The Third Temple” (Linkedin)

My new article on Linkedin “Tisha B’Av and the Building of the Third Temple”

Tisha B’Av (9th of Av) symbolizes the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash (Temple), the deep severance between us caused by the revelation of divisive egoism.

The 9th of Av is a tragic day in Jewish history when the First and Second Temples were destroyed, and also when the Jews were expelled from England, France, and Spain. In addition, it was also the day on which the Jews were taken from the Warsaw Ghetto to be slaughtered during the Holocaust.

There is an intrinsic spiritual root for every holiday and special date on the Jewish calendar, spiritual forces that appear and influence our physical world. The fact that all these tragedies occurred on this same date across many centuries is not accidental. It underscores the spiritual root underlying all of the problems afflicting the people of Israel.

Why did the destruction of the Temple occur? Because we started to put emphasis on the Temple as a building instead of as a symbol of our unity. We, the Jewish people, got to a point where we forgot about the higher power available through our connection, the force that cements the bonds between us. We moved away from our purpose of being as one man in one heart, a state which allows the Creator to be revealed.

As it is written, “The evening of the unfortunate complaints will be the Ninth of Av. And the Creator ruled: you have cried in vain for no reason, and therefore, I will give you a reason for your weeping. The Ninth of Av went on to become a day of mourning for the whole nation. It is actually on this day that the First and Second Temples were destroyed…” (Midrash Raba, Shlach)

Today we are found precisely in the same situation as during the past destructions of the Temples. Nobody really holds good feelings about others. We are in a state in which egoism dominates us, separating and destroying everything that could be positive between us. Until we recognize our fatal flaw, there is no point in just remembering Tisha B’Av as something that happened in the past over which we need to mourn. We are failing to learn what it is that we need to do as a people here and now: to unite, and by doing that, turn evil into good. Therefore, unfortunately, horrific events keep affecting Jews, and even the forecast of a new Holocaust may be on the horizon, this time on a global scale, threatening all Jews wherever they are.

We simply must realize that the source of our troubles—unfounded hatred between us—is as vivid and alive today as in the past. So it is up to us to begin rebuilding our temple, building the Third Temple—the state of unity and completion of one another, of rising above hatred, arrogance and pride; the state of “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

We must create a connection between us sufficient for the good force called the Creator to be revealed. Meanwhile, this powerful positive force is still concealed in our world. The moment we establish proper and beneficial connections, the goodness of the world will be disclosed through us and we will be able to show the whole world how to build the Third Temple for all peoples and nations; as it is written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples” (Isaiah 56:7).

I wish that all the tragic events happening to our people would stop, that we would recognize and understand their cause and uproot it. I wish to see us rise above the suffering of the current world in connections of love. May we speedily succeed in this!

Revelations Of The Ari For Humanity

531.03There are people who by their very nature crave connection with the upper. And then they tell us and explain who we are in connection with, who controls us, and who we really are. There were many such people throughout history. Among them were those who left us the means to establish a connection with the upper force. We remember, honor, and study these people.

A huge contribution to this was made by a man whose name was the Ari, Isaac Luria Ashkenazi. He lived in the 16th century. Before him, there were many generations of Kabbalists from Adam HaRishon to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Behind each of these names is an entire Kabbalistic school for spiritual development of a person.

And yet, the Ari is of great importance in the development of Kabbalah. Today is the memorial day of his departure, and if we remember him and study his works, we get the opportunity to connect with this special soul, the likes of which no longer exist in all of humanity.

This soul plays a very special role in the system of Adam HaRishon and has made such a huge contribution to its correction that no one else was able to reach.

If we want to connect with the Ari, we must connect with the principles of the science of Kabbalah he taught to his students, meaning we must fulfill in full the rule of loving one’s neighbor as oneself.

Revelations of the Ari for humanity can be compared in importance to Moses receiving the Torah. We are not really aware of it and do not really know how to use the Torah. The Ari took a step forward, explained to us what the inner essence of the Torah is, why it is necessary to keep it, and how through our connection, all the parts of creation will be connected.

The creation was deliberately shattered so that we could collect it through our own efforts and lead it to correction, and thus attain the inner force that unites everything—the Creator.

From the Torah itself, we were unable to understand all this. But generation after generation has sunk lower and lower after the ruin of the First and Second Temples and as the final stage of the 2,000 years of exile neared in the 16th century, the time had come to reveal to humanity the method of correction. And then the soul of the Ari appeared to explain to us how the upper system affects us and what we should do in accordance with it.

The Ari gave us a clear, generalized, systematic explanation of where we are, which force controls us from above, how we should act from below in accordance with this, and what our goal is.

Legacy Of The Ari

541The Ari was the man who opened the path to heaven for us. He revealed the end of the thread for us, and if we grasp it, we can rise to the height of the Creator. We still do not have enough understanding and words to thank the Ari and appreciate what he has done.

We just need to believe the Kabbalists who highly appreciated the work of the Ari and thank the Creator for sending us such a messenger who passed knowledge about the upper force, about the way we can come closer to it and how to establish the connection with it.

From the legacy of the Ari, we can receive the reforming light, the most valuable thing in it. When we study the material, the reforming light hidden in these texts influences us.

Of course, its action depends on our desire and intention, on our yearning for connection and unity, and our desire to be similar to the upper system that controls us. The light acts around us, envelops us, purifies us, and brings us closer to the connection.

Therefore, all the texts of the Ari are holy. We can see with what awe the Kabbalists treated them as if they were the Torah from which not a single word can be removed. The death of the Ari became the starting point from which the wisdom of Kabbalah began to develop.

Although it took several hundred years until it came out into the world thanks to his spiritual followers who extracted it from the Ari’s grave and from another hiding place, from some chest. As a result, all the works of the Ari were revealed and served as the basis for the entire modern Kabbalah.

This is very similar to the story of The Book of Zohar, which was also hidden, and then was revealed a thousand years later. It was only in the time of Baal HaSulam that all the writings of the Ari were finally assembled together and he was able to study them, deeply understand them and write a commentary about it: The Study of the Ten Sefirot.

The works of the Ari are a life-saving rope dropped to us from heaven. The entirety of Kabbalah is based on The Book of  Zohar and the writings of the Ari.

Baal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Book Panim Meirot uMasbirot”: There are not enough words to measure his (ARI’s) holy work in our favor. The doors of attainment were locked and bolted, and he came and opened them for us…

You find a thirty-eight-year-old who subdued with his wisdom all his predecessors….

All the sages of the generations… have abandoned all the books and compositions that precede him…they have attached their spiritual life entirely and solely to his Holy Wisdom.

The point here is not in the height of attainment, but the fact that the Ari’s methodology was built and prepared for the final correction.

Therefore, the Ari symbolizes the Messiah Son of Joseph, that is, he gives us the basis of the correct world. As it is written, Joseph was a righteous man, and the righteous is the foundation of the world. It is only thanks to the teachings of the Ari that we begin our corrections.

Although there were great Kabbalists in the past who had even more knowledge than the Ari, such as Rabbi Akiva and Rashbi, they did not know how to express, explain, formulate, and convey the method of correction to us in the way that the Ari did. This is determined not by the height of the Kabbalist, but by his correspondence to his generation. That is why we value the texts of the Ari so much, with the help of which we can reach the final correction.

After the discoveries made by the Ari and his followers, the successors of his methodology who adapted it to modern generations, everyone can now study the wisdom of Kabbalah and use it to reveal their path to unity with others in order to attain the Creator within this unity. This is a great gift that allows us to rise from the animate degree to the degree of a man, Adam, “similar” to the Creator.

All the horror of egoism, egoistic desires and qualities must be revealed in our generation of the Messiah. But we can understand them correctly, resist them, and move toward correction.

Rav Chaim Vital, Shaar Gilgulim: My teacher cautioned me and all the friends who were with him in that society to take upon ourselves the commandment to-do of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and to aim to love each one from Israel as his own soul, for by this his prayer would rise comprising all of Israel and will be able to ascend and make a correction above.

Love for others is the foundation of our work. By our studies, we attract the reforming light, but we must provide it with material for work and correction. It needs to correct the connection between us, which was broken during the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. The entire system, called Adam, has shattered. Now we want to use the light to connect all the parts together.

In each of us, there is a broken part, a record (Reshimo). We are the very parts that were once together in the system of Adam HaRishon. Today we need to return to the same connection again. To do this, we are given the teaching of the Ari, the order of work established by Baal HaSulam, and the order of building a group according to Rabash. We have everything we need, we just need to connect everything together and implement the correction.

Praises of the ARI: One day, on the eve of Shabbat [Sabbath], the ARI went with his disciples for Kabbalat Shabbat [service beginning the Sabbath] as was his custom. He said to the friends: “Let us go now to Jerusalem […] and build the Temple, and make an offering of Shabbat, for I see that this time is truly the time of redemption.

“Some of the friends said, ‘How will we go to Jerusalem at this time, It is more than thirty parsas away (approx. 115 km)?’ Others said, ‘Very well, we are willing to go with you, but first we will go let our wives know so they will not worry about us, and then we will go.’”

Then the Rav cried out and said to the friends, “How did the slandering of Satan succeed in revoking the redemption of Israel? I testify before Heaven and Earth that since the time of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai until today there has not been a better time for redemption than this time.

“Had you admitted this, we would have had the Temple, and the outcasts of Israel would have gathered into Jerusalem. Now the time had passed and Israel went into exile once again.” When the friends heard this, they regretted what they had done, but it did not help them.

There are special times. Let’s hope that we will have such an opportunity, and we will not miss our chance.

Before his death, the Ari told his students that if they deserved it, he would come and teach them. It is very difficult for us to understand this, but everything already exists, there is no life and death. There are only changes between the degrees, a change of states.

Therefore, the one who accepts the principles of the Ari’s methodology—connection in the ten and equivalence to the upper system of ABYA—begins to advance, practically integrates with the system, receives force and light from it, and thus, he learns.

It’s not about learning and understanding with your mind. Mental attainment comes many years later, after attainment with feelings. First of all, the sensations must come. As in our world, we first begin to live in it and feel it, and then we can explain some of the sensations in the language of reason.

It is the same in the spiritual world, first of all, we need to penetrate into the sensations, into love and connection, and then we will be able to understand according to what formulas these feelings work.

Two Powers: Mordecai And Haman

232.05Question: Two powers are described in the “Scroll of Esther”: Mordecai and Haman. What do they represent?

Answer: Mordecai is the power of Bina, the property of bestowal, love, and connection. Haman is an egoistic force, the property of separation and destruction. But neither force can act without the other.

Their correct combination is necessary in order to bring all of humanity to its complete, ideal state when, on one hand, all egoistic forces exist in their terrible form, and on the other hand, they are ruled by the power of connection, the power of love.

Then both forces, negative and positive, work together for all of humanity, like electric forces, plus and minus, work in a motor or in some kind of machine. Thus, we need to understand how we should act.

Question: That is, each force has its own function. But why, then, does the scroll say that the power of Haman is destroyed?

Answer: The fact is that there are still many nuances here. It is not force that is destroyed, but the egoistic intention, how to use force correctly.

Question: Is Haman the intention to receive for oneself and not the desire to receive itself?

Answer: Intention for your own sake. The desire to receive is neutral, it is nature itself.

Quality Of “Haman”

177.06Question: What is the connection between “Oznei Haman” (ears of Haman) and “Kisim Haman” (pockets of Haman).

Answer: The ears of Haman symbolize the property of Bina, which works for Malchut (egoism) when we are ready to give something for the sake of our own fulfillment. This is such a sophisticated egoism: giving for the sake of receiving. I am ready to give something in order to get more.

And the pockets of Haman are already purely egoistic desires that I want to fulfill.

The property of Haman works in us very intelligently. Haman says that there are people who create many problems for us and we do not know what to do. He wants to overthrow the king, etc. That is, he uses the properties of Bina, the properties of bestowal. He supposedly wants to do good. And therefore, he believes that these people must be destroyed.

630.2Question: On Purim traditionally sweet cakes are eaten shaped to resemble Haman’s pockets. What is it about this symbol?

Answer: In our world, there is a connection between the root and the branch. Therefore, we must somehow display all this in the branches. The people should be attached to such things.

Question: Isn’t it primitive that in the 21st century we are following these traditions?

Answer: I believe that our century is the most primitive of all previous centuries. The more we develop, the more our egoism grows. Therefore, we suddenly begin to feel like some kind of greatness and criticize previous centuries, scientists, and everyone else. But they understood much better than we did about the structure of the worlds, the forces of creation.

They knew these roots, saw them, guessed them, and understood what they were dealing with, not in order to make some kind of historical story out of this, but to include in the system of correction so that each generation makes its own correction and gradually we would come to complete correction, which is called “Purim.”

Question: Is that why they introduced the tradition of eating sweets shaped like Haman’s pockets to the people?

Answer: Of course. All this was done by the great Kabbalists. There are innumerable allusions to spiritual properties and actions that we must perform.

Question: It is customary to give gifts on Purim. In honor of what? In honor of joy?

Answer: Yes, because when we connect with each other, we fulfill each other: I am you, you are me. And each individual cannot fulfill himself.

Purim is the final correction. The Creator created egoism, an evil inclination that is completely corrected.

When Good And Evil Merge Together

624.04Question: What is this commandment to drink wine on Purim to such a state that you do not distinguish Haman the robber from the pure quality of Mordechai?

Answer: At the end of correction we get so much light (symbolized by wine) that we are not able to determine where the evil is and where the good is because there is no longer any difference between them. They are combined into one single attainment of the upper root from which both plus and minus emanate. There is practically nothing there, only a kind attitude toward us.

A person acquires the ability to see all kinds of evil and good events as one. Even today Kabbalah advises us to treat everything in the same way: There is only “The Good Who does good” in everything, “There is None Else Besides Him.”

When we treat everything as good coming from the Creator, then we move closer to Him every time.

Question: A person who reaches the state of correction can internally justify anything, even the most terrible incidents?

Answer: He must justify them because it all comes from the Creator, and there is nothing that does not come from Him. And He is absolute kindness.

If we do not understand this and cannot justify it, then this only means our lack of correction.

Jerusalem—The Heart Of The World

426Question: There is a holiday called Jerusalem Day. After the Six-Day War, Jerusalem became whole and this day was designated as a holiday.

What does Jerusalem mean in a high sense and Jerusalem Day in a spiritual sense?

Answer: Jerusalem Day is a day when the people, land, and state will find their central point of existence. Jerusalem—”Ir Shalem” (whole city), when people will feel that they have one heart, one thought, and one desire toward one goal.

Question: What is the goal of these united people?

Answer: To reveal the goal of the existence of the whole world to the whole world.

This goal is to bring people closer to each other so that there is no difference between them. This is a very lofty goal that should bring everyone to complete unification.

Then there will have to be one nation in the whole world covering the entire Earth. In this unity, it will begin to attain the upper force, the Creator, and will discover in this the reason, the goal of its existence, the existence of humanity!

Question: Then, will Jerusalem become the capital of the world?

Answer: Yes, and it will be Yerushalayim, Ir-Shlema, a whole world, a whole power, a whole heart, whole desire, whole city, and so on.

Question: When they say: “Jerusalem is a white city,” what do they mean?

Answer: White means that all must be built on bestowal and love—the color of light.

Remark: That is when they say, for example: “Paris,” you take it as it is, “New York,” you understand that it is like Babylon, there are many different nations and so on. When you say “Jerusalem” even to outsiders, will they still have something inside?

Answer: Yes, because in each one of all the people living on Earth, there is a point that has not yet awakened, called Jerusalem, and it is in each of us, in every person on Earth.

Question: People of different religions live in this city. Does this mean that the world will be like this city?

Answer: No, the world will be united. There will be one religion. It will be a religion of the attainment of the single upper force, which in exactly this manner will unite all the nations into one nation.

937Comment: The great Kabbalist ARI wrote that in the future all holidays will be canceled except for Purim.

My Response: All holidays speak of intermediate spiritual states on the path of correction from pure egoism to complete altruism, full of love, and therefore the last state will not be canceled. This is Purim.

Question: How did people write the “Scroll of Esther”?

Answer: They were in this state spiritually.

Comment: But the scroll is written like a children’s story.

My Response: It only seems to us that way.

Question: It is clear that there is some depth but if you look at it with simple eyes, it says that the feast lasted a hundred and eighty days. How can this be?

Answer: Why not? They did not sit at the table all day. The leaders of all subordinate states gathered, discussed together, studied something, watched dances, went hunting, and dined. This is all called a feast.

Behind all this, there are spiritual states, that is why they described it.

Question: Did they take the events of our world as a basis?

Answer: Yes. The fact is that any event in our world has its root in the spiritual world. Thus, when describing special events, they pointed to their roots. They still do today. Therefore, we know that this is how it happened, and this is how it should be.

Choosing The Path Of Correction

272Purim comes from the word “Pur” (fate or lot.)

That is, the lot is cast as if determining who will lead humanity to a good, absolute, final, and mandatory state. Or humanity will do it itself consciously, and then its path will be short, comfortable, and suitable for advanced humanity. Or it will be a path of terrible blows inflicted by the force of nature, terrible states and wars.

Either we attract the good force and it develops us or the evil force automatically acts in nature, as it is written: “I have created the evil inclination; I have created the Torah as a spice”; it constantly pushes us and still carries us forward.
