So The World Will Become More Wonderful

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Unfortunately a person involved with Integral Education doesn’t acquire a global vision immediately. On one hand, he has a group that cannot change him right away; on the other hand, there is the external world which dictates its rules. What should he do in a in this situation?

Answer: Our world doesn’t dictate any rules that contradict the integral method. A person safely engage in Integral Education. In our world there are many exercises that relax a person, train him, expand or narrow his horizons according to what each method is designed for.

We do not present and compare opposites; on the contrary, we say that our world is good and we do not have to wait until it will deteriorate. It is only necessary to include one more force in it and then it will become even more wonderful; we can manage it.

We have always advanced under the influence of one attraction that was egoistic. Egoism lashed us from behind like a whip and we developed. Now a further force is beginning to be discovered that is altruistic, and therefore we have lost control; we have lost our bearings in this world because according to our internal structure, we are not at all adapted to what is being discovered in the world.

We propose the method of awareness, the method for discovering that system of forces that manages us in order to find our bearings in our world again, to understand where we are going, where that system is, how we can enter it, and to secure our future.

The Taming Of The Obstinate

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In the system of integrality, it is said that a person can use his egoistic attributes for the benefit of himself and of others. How can we use such attributes as envy, vanity, cunning, and ambition?

Answer: Only in order to deceive our ego.

During the study of integral education we teach how to correctly use all of our attributes against our egoism.

For example, it is possible to use our cunningness in order to deceive our ego and not another person. After all, we bring our ego outside and fight it, not in order to kill it, but in order to change the way we use it. Egoism in itself can be a very good attribute.

When all egoistic desire is applied for the benefit of the rest, then it transforms into altruism. There is always a reverse, a mirror application.

Let’s take hatred as an example. If you begin to hate the ego in its natural manifestation of unconscious, you will suddenly discover how it controls you. Together with this, hatred against the ego grows with such great force that you are ready for anything just to restrain it. And finally, seizing the moment, you snap a bridle on it with a sweet feeling of victory, and tighten it more and more.

But you don’t kill the ego. When it begins to choke you, slowly pet it, taming it, just like taming a wild horse when it is already full of fury and passes that point and begins to obey you. Then it can be easily applied in a positive way.

In A Free-Fall

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: We have spoken about the state of our modern society and what it should be. But what happens between these two states? We know that a transition from one social state to another is preceded by dramatic circumstances for an individual because his life begins to fall apart.

Answer: In our case this process is even more difficult. The previous transitions have been jumps from one egoistic level to another because the ego continued to increase for thousands of years and accordingly the social configurations reformatted: slavery, feudalism, capitalism, post-modernism, and others, but now we have reached such a level where everything is beginning to fall.

When we are reminded of the past, we sometimes say: “The eighties were good.” In what way were they good? That the egoistic development of thousands of years of humanity had reached its peak of saturation? And this peak fell during the days of our youth. We felt some kind of freedom then, the need to survive did not bear down on us, the futility of our existence had not been discovered yet.

At the end of the eighties everything began to fall and gradual withdrawal began. In his day, Vernadsky and other philosophers had foreseen this, but nobody listened to them. And today people don’t want to accept this even though it has already been understood for many years. The same thing has been happening with the wisdom of Kabbalah, for the time being they don’t want to hear about it, but there is no way to refute it.

In the past these philosophers were sharply criticized; people didn’t accept the wisdom of Kabbalah at all and didn’t want to hear anything about it. But today it has become clearer that everything is sliding down to a new level, causing great personal and social problems, but there is no remedy for this; some kind of revolution must take place.

But not a physical revolution as there were in the previous stages: the Hundred Years War, the slave revolts, the protests of the landowners, the ruin of the peasants, and so forth. All these were indicators of evolution, but the egoistic evolution! The ego grew causing a need to restart the physical format: social, technological, familial, personal, etc.

Now, the transition from the system that developed under the pressure of egoistic forces is beginning to slide downward; that is, the egoistic forces are losing ground. We are beginning to see that the leadership doesn’t work, not in factories, not in the army, not in governmental institutions, not in schools, not in the family.

What restraint can hold a child? Where is the husband that listens to his wife? Where is the worker who hears his manager’s voice without question? Where is the government: the parliament, the head of state? Where are they? They don’t exist. The authorities “peep” from the television screen, yet nobody pays attention to their twittering. It is understood that the media tries to play along with them by creating an image of great leaders, but, in fact, nobody hears them.

Factory managers complain all the time that people don’t have the motivation to work; they cannot compel themselves and don’t want to work. When the ego descends, it doesn’t see perspectives. How is it possible to obligate a machine to work without electricity, energy, gasoline, and so forth? There is no way!

Now we are in a free-fall, and in the meantime we don’t see other forces that can replace the ego as the developmental force for us. But the ego is already expiring. And this is the downward slide. The ego is gradually getting smaller and is losing its attraction in our eyes. How much can we shop and run around? How long can you travel around the world? How much time can you spend sitting in bars and restaurants?

It’s not because the person is satisfied, but because the desire for this is lost for him; it disappeared somewhere. There is supposedly an immense world in front of you, but the youth are stuck on their cell phones, SMS, empty, and foolish talk. Where are the ideals? Where is art? Where is science? Where is the conquest of space? Where are the dreams of discovering new lands? All this is gone.

Question: Enthusiasm and excitement like this prevailed in society during the sixties.

Answer: And what was the excitement? The ego worked for our benefit. It pushed us towards great attainments. But today this no longer exists, and we cannot do anything. We require an absolutely different force to lead us forward.

Altruism’s Assistant

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Which of our egoistic needs will be less valued and which will be better in the integral state? That is, will there be a need to change them all?

Answer: There is no need. If egoism will begin to work in the right partnership with altruism and they complete each other, there will only be benefit from it.

Think about what is happening in our body: a huge amount of all kinds of reactions, connections, disconnections, mutual destruction, births, and so on. A body that is assaulted by a multitude of hostile elements and germs destroys or corrects them. There is a great struggle, constant work of analysis and synthesis of the data obtained, and decision as to what to do with them.

In other words, the body cannot function without positive and negative forces; they both must operate.

So when an altruistic force appears against egoism, the egoism enters into balance with it, immediately becoming equal to it in importance. It is a system that maintains itself in homeostasis, in balance, in harmony.

A New Type Of Ego

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: You say that in our time a new type of ego is being discovered. Perhaps you can characterize it?

Answer: The new type of ego awakens in us the question: “Why does man exist?” It summons in us the need to discover the second positive force in nature so that it won’t swallow itself like a cancerous tumor that eats the entire surrounding space and therefore dies since it has nothing from which to be nourished.

Question: It follows that it appears from a lack of energy and therefore it needs the energy of the altruistic force.

Answer: Yes. But the idea is that in the past the ego had nourishment from which it grew and realized itself; whereas today, a stage has been reached in which the ego needs to develop together with its opposite power in order to create the next level.

In other words, the previous developmental stages were the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking nature. However, now it’s necessary to develop a new spiritual component. And when it appears, then with the right connection between egoism and altruism, some kind of means will be created from ourselves that is composed of the two forces. Within this useful tension between plus and minus, between the positive and negative force, we create what will be called “man.” Today we are becoming the mechanical executors of our inner egoistic force.

Two Partners: Egoism and Altruism

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In the past, at the time of the transition from one system to another, did the ego also require altruism or not?

Answer: Egoism nourishes itself by always conquering something. It is like a cancerous tumor that gradually grows while not yet being apparent. And now it is grown to the last stage and is beginning to devour itself.

Until the ‘80s, all of the systems that we constructed served to extend and expand a particular goal. We flew into space, to the stars; we went deep into the bowels of the earth; we built great cities, and we created new technologies. We developed under the influence of one and only one force, and we thought that this would continue forever.

If we were to continue to develop further in this way, we would advance ourselves only externally and not internally. Human development was done in a mechanical, technological manner: Instead of two hands, I would have had twenty; instead of seeing for a distance of two kilometers, I would have seen two hundred thousand kilometers ahead.

In this case, the human became an appendage of a machine, an appendage of a computer. So today the egoistic system begins to work more and more against him. The human has become unnecessary to it.

We have grown to such a state where we must discover the meaning of our existence. Now, for many people, in particular among the youth, the reason for living, the aspiration for some kind of goal, has disappeared. “What is there to strive for? I exist comfortably, I don’t need children, a family, or serious work; what will this give me? It is better if I sit somewhere with friends, have fun. What else is there to live for; what is the reason for living? I will play a little and die, like everyone”.

Therefore the question now is, either to give a person a motivation for living, or drugs. And here Kabbalah or the method of integral education show people a completely different way: to get from nature a second anti-egoistic power. It is precisely this power that created and developed the ego so that we would consciously get it from nature and could mutually manage the two forces of our development.

One of them can inspire us forward with good, through the goal that shines from afar. And the second is like a developmental steamroller that chases me, and I flee from it like that poor coyote in the cartoons.

Question: But even the altruistic force requires egoism, at least in this stage?

Answer: Yes, for this, the ego develops. And now it shows that if we don’t balance it through the altruistic force, it will devour us, like a cancerous tumor in the human body that devours the body and in the end kills itself.

What does a cancerous tumor mean? This is a disrupted program of the development of the body, of the functioning of its cells, where they begin to proliferate beyond their contained space and have an opposite effect.

In principle, every cell has the possibility of cancerous development, but they are always found in harmony between them, in a relative balance between positive and negative forces. But when one of them becomes greater, then another either disappears or there is a disruption in the polarity between them, and in this imbalance destructive development appears.

It is the same thing in society as well. We should begin quickly, through a second positive force, to balance the entire human society that has become a cancerous tumor. And this is the remedy for its recovery.

Unfortunately, at the time of healing cancer, we are satisfied with suppressing the egoistic development of the cells through various kinds of short radiation, thereby killing them. This is not a cure. It is not necessary to kill human society or to do anything else with it. You just need to add the second developmental force to it.

Our Leader: It’s The Ego

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What role does the ego play in the transition to a new formation, considering that it has finally evolved?

Answer: It will help us in that it shows us where and how to add the opposite force of good so that they will develop in a mutually balanced manner.

The ego is our leader in that it shows what must be done. The egoistic desires in every case will determine the activities of the person, we don’t remove anything here in any way, and we don’t discard what we created. We only add a positive component to everything that is now gradually dying and animate.

Question: You said that the altruistic force is a creative force. Can the ego also create?

Answer: It can create in a wonderful way. See what it did with us? All this is for the good. There is nothing wrong in nature.

This is the program of nature that we carry out unconsciously under the influence of its forces. Every time that we feel it is bad for us in a given state, we begin to move towards the next state, towards a better state. The ego subconsciously shows us that it will be good for us here, and there, no. It directs us from within, telling us what to do.

The ego manages all of our strength, all the characteristics, and leads us forward precisely and sharply. Sometimes we fall into something, suppose in the building socialism or something else, but this is only to understand the ramifications of the blind alley, and after that we continue to develop further.

Learning How To Work With Egoism
With The Help Of The Simple Psychology Of Egoism

A Science Whose Time Has Come

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe wisdom of Kabbalah is separate from all the rest of the sciences and human activities in this world. It is concealed from people. Simply studying the sources will not help us understand it. Kabbalah is not given to be learned alone for it requires personal guidance which will make it possible to truly learn it and attain what is said in the books.

Kabbalah is not just a science; rather, it is the wisdom of creation. And it is revealed with the help of a unique force that reaches a person, changes him, and fills him with the “Light” of the intellect and emotion, fills the brain and the heart. Only then does a person encounter the wisdom of Kabbalah and become a Kabbalist. And what he receives is called “Torah” or “The Light that Reforms.” This Light corrects him and gives him another nature compatible with discovery of the higher world. Within our present nature we discover only “this world,” the lowest level, which, in fact, doesn’t exist since it is entirely drawn by illusory perception of the desire to receive. When we acquire a desire to bestow, at this level, it will simply disappear.

The wisdom of Kabbalah talks about the entire process that a person must undergo to acquire characteristics that are compatible with a higher level; that is, the desire to bestow through which he will feel reality.

And the path begins from this world, specifically from the lowest level, where the person is completely detached from what he must attain. First of all it is up to him to correct his instruments of perception, and after that begin to investigate what he received and what he discovered. From here the advancement begins until a person reaches the source of all the Kelim, vessels, desires, and all the fulfillments within them, which is the Creator.

In order to bring the person to such a lofty result, the Kabbalists wrote books for us.

There are auxiliary books that talk about psychological discernments, like “Shamati,” “Dargot HaSulam,” “Shlavei HaSulam,” and the articles by Rabash and Baal HaSulam.

Likewise there are purely Kabbalah books like, The Book of Zohar with the Sulam Commentary, The Study of the Ten Sefirot or “The Tree of Life” by the Ari. The Kabbalists wrote them from an attainment of the upper worlds with new properties. They write them about what they feel, what they perceive, and what is not known to us.

But when we read these books, we can adapt ourselves; yearn to reach those emotions, those corrections, within our senses. And then the reading arouses the Light that Reforms on us, which is the Torah, that is, instruction, the method. When it reaches us, it corrects our intentions from “to receive” to “to bestow,” and then we can discover phenomena of a different order of magnitude and discover the “upper world.” Of course, this is not talking about distant galaxies or distant times; rather, it is about the comprehension of a qualitatively new reality.

I don’t know where the Light appears from; I don’t feel it; but I feel the phenomena it arouses. I begin to be changed; I suddenly feel a chain of elevations and descents, different states.

And after I am changed, I discover a higher reality, and then by reading in those books, I truly begin to be aware of what is written in them. Now I can point to those details that they describe.

Suppose that I bought a large and complex machine. Even though I have don’t understand the principles of its operation, but I have a technical approach and am ready to understand the instructions. With the help of the written instructions, I begin to become familiar with the diagrams and to understand the structure of the system until I learn it all.

The same thing happens to us in the second stage where we see the spiritual system and learn to work with it. This is practical, true work already, on the level of the upper world.

And in addition to that, the two main stages (the attraction of the Light that Reforms and the practical knowledge) are divided into a multitude of stages with accompanying conditions. For example, the wisdom of Kabbalah was forbidden for public consumption except for those who were already “ripe” for it.

In general, development must begin from zero, from the “big bang,” from which afterwards the substance of the still, vegetative, and animate were gradually developed  In continuation from the ape, which is the most developed in the world of the animate, emerged the human who ultimately reaches the final level of egoistic development. In other words, we are compelled to renounce, to disqualify ourselves, to recognize our evil, and only then are we ready for and worthy of the wisdom of Kabbalah.

We see from the experience of history that we have always developed according to this scheme. For example, I move to a village, get involved with farming, building a home, a family, giving birth to children, buying cows and sheep, and after ten or fifteen years, or even less, I am fed up with it. Enough, I don’t want to continue anymore; I need something more than this. So I leave the farm and move to a city and start everything anew.

In other words, all development is based upon the nullification of the previous level and a desire to ascend to the next level. We must hate the present state. On the social scale this brings revolution and on the international scale the matter causes wars that sometimes continue for decades. We must always despair of the present state in order to pass to the next state.

So when will humanity despair of its egoistic development based upon reception “in order to receive” and move to altruistic development with an intention, “in order to bestow”?

The Kabbalists determined that this would occur in the twentieth century, after a number of conditions were established including the return of the people of Israel to its land. And then the time would arrive for the revelation of the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Baal HaSulam also talked about this. We received permission to return to the land of Israel and also to reveal the wisdom of Kabbalah. But not everyone will receive this permission but only certain people. For there are people who were not given a desire and there are those who have no connection to this. Other people were given a desire but were forbidden to realize it. But there are those who received the knowledge and it is also possible for them to act. More than this, divine providence pushes them in various ways to the discovery of the wisdom of Kabbalah as the generation is already suitable for this.

Therefore, Baal HaSulam writes that all that he attained and discovered wasn’t derived from his personal achievements but because of the generation that was already required for this discovery.

Egoism Does Not Allow Us To Distribute Food

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Reuters): “One of every seven Americans will take a hit on Friday when a $5 billion cut in food stamps, the first across-the-board reduction in the history of the decades-old federal program, takes effect.

“But if conservative Republicans in Congress get their way, this week’s pullback may be just a taste of what’s to come for some of the almost 48 million Americans who receive benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“SNAP, the largest U.S. anti-hunger program, is designed to help poor people – most of them children, disabled or elderly – buy food. But enrollment has doubled and the program’s cost has nearly tripled since 2004, and has remained at record levels even as the economy improves and unemployment declines.”

“For those wondering about abuse or fraud in the program, here’s a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture report (pdf) on “trafficking” in the food-stamp program. Between 2009 and 2011, about $858 million worth of food stamps, or just 1.3 percent of all benefits, were traded at a discount for cash.” Source: The Washington Post

“According to the UN, today more than a billion of people in the world suffer from starvation. Experts believe that the problem can not be solved within the current political-economic paradigm framework. …

“Lappe, Collins and Rosset in their book dispelled another myth about hunger. They have denied the widespread belief that the world produces not enough food. In reality, the main problem is the abundance, not deficit. The planet produces enough food to provide every person 3,500 calories a day, and this calculation does not include meat, vegetables, fruit, fish and other foods. Today, the world produces so much food that everyone can get about 1.7 kg of food per day – about 800 grams of products produced from grain (bread, cereal, pasta, etc.), approximately 0.5 kg of fruits and vegetables, and about 400 grams of meat, eggs, milk and so on. The problem is that people are too poor to buy themselves food.” Source: The Voice of Russia

My Comment: It is only our egoism that does not allow everyone to live with dignity, in abundance. The same situation exists with all other goods. Until we correct ourselves, change our nature from egoistic to altruistic, there will be hunger, disease, and inequality in the world. Only one force governs in us—egoism, and in order to balance it we need the second force, opposite to it—altruism.

It can be obtained only by the method of integral education (IE). Through this technique, a practical application of the wisdom of Kabbalah for the correction of the human being, can realize the biblical call to “love your neighbor as yourself.” According to the program of development of nature we must change ourselves by force or voluntarily. By force is under the pressure of great suffering. Voluntarily is through integral education and upbringing.

The Trend Of Our Time

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If people are forced to sit at desks as a necessity in order to make ends meet, then how will they be able to come to the Creator? Under pressure?

Answer: Of course! Didn’t we come to Him under pressure?

Look at everyone who is sitting next to you. Do you see joyful, happy faces? Take a look at these sour faces. What holds them here and compels them to come to class at night? Only what creates a desire in them, a need, a lack, no matter what.

People will either intoxicate themselves with drugs, or they will have to be engaged in unification.

We must understand that the trend will remain. People will suffer blows that can only be cured by unity. The growing egoism will manifest in us more and more clearly as a guiding force against itself. We will feel more and more its “suicide” by which the ego shows us that it cannot be used.

In the end, we will realize that the most important thing is to get rid of egoism, and it helps us in this process. Gradually it becomes more and more opposite to the Light; it turns out that, on the one hand we are developing, and on the other hand we are constantly feeling the negativity of our development.

Moreover, the negativity of our development does not remain at the same level, but qualitatively increases all the time; we become smarter, wiser, more experienced, and that is why we begin to perceive and analyze our development from a completely different point of view.

When experiencing blows twenty years ago, we did not understand where they came from. We thought that the most important thing was developing the economy, how much interest goes to this or that, and according to this  we considered our lives to be more or less successful; today we have stopped calculating the interest. Nowadays many already know that egoism forces us to “eat” ourselves; we have come to the realization of evil.
