Generations X, Y, and Z, Part 3

laitman_229Question: How does external influence affect the character of a generation and shape it?

Answer: Human egoism is like clay or dough from which a society can mold anything.

Question: Doesn’t the character of a generation depend on its egoism?

Answer: Egoism only determines how pliable this material is. Once, it is molded from clay, then sculpted from marble, and later, even more complex materials are used for construction. Today, mostly plastic is used.

The distinction is all in the material, and what to build and how is determined by the generation. But, the material itself, suitable for construction, comes from within, from the developing desire to enjoy.

Question: The older generation created all the innovations that had not existed before in the world, and the next generations enter a world in which everything is as it is. Is that perhaps why the younger generation is not very impressed with material values?

Answer: Young people are not impressed with material values, and they have nothing to add to the world of material things. It would seem, what will they do? But, this is just like after Newton’s physics where everything was already known. Einstein suddenly came and opened new dimensions.

The same is true here. We built all kinds of devices, but the next generation has the opportunity to create new programs for them, to get inside the matter, inside the genome, into the source of life, inside the brain and above it. They still have a lot of work.

As a student, I worked in the field of medical cybernetics at an institute engaged in the study of blood and the brain. But, this is nothing compared to modern instruments and research facilities. The research went far into the interior: inside the cell, inside the brain, the psychology of man, and beyond the boundaries of the mind. It breaks through and beyond the borders of human life.

These studies still refer to the material, but they are approaching the border of the spiritual world, and we are gradually losing touch with matter. This information is from the border zone and over the matter.

The egoism of modern man is more developed and complex. It is destined to perceive the deepest mysteries of life. And for him, they seem quite natural and ordinary. A person is no longer impressed with the tools that fall into his hands, but he is looking for what can be achieved with their help.

The baby boomer generation built a material base, the equipment. The next generation created a program for it. The youngest generation will now use all of this.

Question: And what will the new generation have to do? Where are we going?

Answer: I think that the next generation will enter the reality that we will reveal at the expense of all of our previous development, and they will live in it. They should reveal the spiritual world. The challenge of the next generation is to move from computers and the study of matter to its forces. Deeper inside the material, through it, we reach the forces that govern it, and there we will continue our research.

Question: What will young people be impressed with in a decade?

Answer: It seems to me, with nothing. The younger the generation, the more difficult it is to be touched by something. Their egoism is so subtle that it is not impressed by anything tangible in this world. They need to uncover higher sources of influence on themselves and, perhaps, they will impress them. The usual fulfillments—food, sex, family, money, honor, and knowledge—are no longer important to the modern generation.

It is clear that it is necessary to satisfy the essential needs of the body, but beyond the necessary, a young man will want to be in the world of the managing program, in the world of forces, above the material, where matter comes into play in the large computer of creation called the “spiritual world.”

Laitman_036Question: When you look at yourself and your generation of baby boomers, and compare yourself with your grandson who is a few generations apart from you and belongs to generation “A,” you, of course, see a big difference.
What is the root cause of such differences? Why do new generations have a completely different perception of the world?

Answer: From the moment of the creation of our universe, from the Big Bang to today, all of our development was egoistic. First, evolution was at the level of inanimate matter; atoms began to form and connect to molecules. Then, plants appeared on the surface of the globe, later animals, and finally, man who has also been developing for many tens of thousands of years.

All of this evolution was due to the growth of egoism inside the matter at all of its levels: inanimate, vegetative, animal, and human. Thus, the egoism of the generation of my grandson, of course, is a lot greater than the egoism of my generation. He demands more from life. After all, the more time that passes from the beginning of creation, the more matter develops.

Its development is expressed in the fact that it begins to demand more fulfillment, both in quantity and in quality. Accordingly, one generation is different from another. In addition, there is a certain acceleration of generations. Before, it was necessary to pass several centuries in order to make the difference between generations noticeable. Nowadays, the generation is completely new every ten years.

Egoism grows and requires more and more from life. Therefore, the modern generation needs to know the meaning of life, its essence, and how to fill one’s egoistic desire, which has grown in relation to past generations. It quickly finds out what is worth doing and what is not. In short, it is more selfish.

The quality of egoistic desire has also changed. Man can no longer be filled with small joys that were characteristic of the old generation. I remember when they bought me a bicycle; the joy lasted for about two years. My younger grandson is almost indifferent to whether he has a bicycle or not. He is looking for better fulfillments.

As a child, I looked at a plane in the sky and was inspired just by its appearance. My little grandson was taken on a trip to France, and I was amazed at how calmly he entered the plane, as if this was the most ordinary event. He treated it like an adult.

From the outside, it seems that he is a small child, but in fact, there is an adult inside who is not impressed with the material. His impressions and their form exist on a completely different level.

The modern child turns on the computer and knows in advance what should be there. His inner need tells him how each button should work. He knows that the computer was prepared for him by the last generation, and that’s what it should be. This generation comes and opens things, knowing in advance that they have already been created.

This is very characteristic of the last generations. After all, our generation only made discoveries and created new things. It was a generation that had nothing. Everything just started to enter our life. Cars and planes—we created them ourselves.

For our grandchildren, it has become ordinary. The sky and the earth are full of all kinds of machines. So, nothing impresses the young man: not mountains, the supermarket, nor the amusement park. Everything seems to be obvious in advance. Egoism has become more sophisticated, complex, and requires a better fulfillment.

laitman_269Question: Generations come and replace each other, while each brings its own distinctive approach, relation to reality, and perception of life. And especially recently in our rapidly changing world, it becomes noticeable how the person himself is changing.

Every few years there is a new type of people with new goals and lifestyle. The generation of “baby boomers” is those born after the Second World War who are now 50-70 years old. Then comes the generation of those who are now 40-50 called “generation X.”

“Generation Y,” which is 20 to 40 years old, and “Generation Z,” which are 10 to 20 years old, and the last generation, for which there are no letters left, will probably return to the beginning of the alphabet and become “generation A.”

Each generation was formed under the influence of certain events that qualitatively changed its nature: social causes, wars, economic crises, and technological breakthroughs. Do you feel a qualitative difference between generations, and what it is?

Answer: Kabbalah does not study such differences between generations and does not take them into account. It explains to a person the reality, its perception, and teaches him to comprehend the true world that is outside of man. He begins to understand where he is and what happens to us before birth and after death in dimensions that are higher than time and space.

But Kabbalah does not investigate generations X, Y, or Z; after all, it talks about a person’s egoism, which even though it varies from generation to generation, it does not do so qualitatively. Kabbalah is engaged in changing the nature of man, and therefore is indifferent to which generation he belongs. Whether he came to study at 20, 40, or 60, his original form of perception is not important because Kabbalah changes his perception and approach to life.

Kabbalah is designed to give a person the right guidance, the correct view of reality—the only one, clear, eternal, and unchanging from generation to generation. Today it is the same as it was 6,000 years ago. This is the same method in which there is nothing to change.

Man changes with the course of history in his material, animal properties. But Kabbalah does not take them into account because its task is to develop the human in him, a new individuality that is higher than all generations of X, Y, or Z.

Question: Why then does the book Bereshit speak about ten generations from Adam to Noah?

Answer: Ten generations from Adam to Noah are stages in the development of the spiritual structure raised by man above his egoism. A person engaged in his inner correction, building a soul, passes certain levels of development, called a transition from generation to generation. But we are talking about spiritual progress.

From this point of view, generations are different as far as they awaken a person to the search for spiritual development. For example, the generation of ancient Babylon was pretty developed in this sense and so it gave rise to all of humanity, to the entire human civilization.

After the outbreak of the crisis,  a group came out of Babylon, later called the people of Israel, which was solely raising itself above all corporeal life. In this case, external, material conditions awakened the demand, the need for spiritual elevation.

Egoism And Altruism

Laitman_049_01Question: What is the difference between egoism and altruism?

Answer: Egoism differs from altruism only in the intention: on whether I want to do something for myself or for others.

I can kiss you and it will be for myself, and I can slap you a couple of times, and it will be for you. In other words, the action itself is meaningless. It is only the intention that determines its essence.

The Indefatigable Growth Of Egoism

Dr. Michael LaitmanEgoism is created in us specifically so that we, through developing it, will achieve the possibility of free will and will begin to use it in spite of ourselves. Then we will attain the Creator.

The ego’s property of unlimited growth is an incredible attribute that does not exist in nature.

If I want something and taste it, I will want twice as much; if I consume twice as much, I will want four times as much, and so on. I constantly need to double my pleasure otherwise I cannot feel it as a pleasure.

This means that the Creator’s force is within the ego, and it keeps growing. This does not exist in the other levels of nature, but it does in our egoism. In man, in the fourth phase of development, after the the still, vegetative, and the animate levels, there is the Creator’s spark that is actually concentrated in the ego, which keeps growing exponentially.

Question: If a person enjoys the fact that others feel bad, does that mean that it is a real egoism?

Answer: Yes, when the filling is at the expense of others, I feel great pleasure. At the same time, my egoism exits my internal frameworks. A lion, for example, that devours a certain animal is satisfied and has no need for anything else. A man who devours one, looks for something else to devour.

This means that very big desires emerge in us and constantly demand renewal and are insatiable. On the contrary, the more you try to satisfy them, the hungrier you feel. If you satisfy the double egoism, you are four times as hungry, and so on, and it is impossible to do anything with such a bottomless pit.

Question: Does this apply to all of mankind?

Answer: It applies to all developed people. An underdeveloped human being is like an animal, like a baby, whom you give something and he is satisfied. A developed man, on the other hand, wants the whole world, and even that is not enough for him.

The desire to receive everything at the expense of others is a special kind of egoism. We can see the competition between rich and famous people, like artists, for example, who burn with envy of each other.

Question: But the Creator has created all that. How is that supposed to bring us closer to Him to reach His attributes?

Answer: It happens in a very bitter manner when a person begins to realize that he will attain no pleasure, will not be satisfied “till death do us part between me and my sack of gold.”

Question: Do you think that a kind, good hearted, gentle, honest person is an underdeveloped person?

Answer: Yes, he is not egoistically developed enough yet. But today, this can happen very quickly.
When a person begins to understand that there is no point chasing new fillings because they don’t satisfy him anyway, he begins to look for a substitute on a higher level and reaches the wisdom of Kabbalah.

laitman_938_03The method of integral education does not prevent a person from developing his or her inner individuality, rather it allows a person to do so. No one invades this inner world.

But along with this, one also knows that it is possible to feel the world, reality, from a higher and broader perspective, above isolation and individualism, but only through a connection with others.

When this occurs, he begins to sense a world parallel to this one. No one argues that we are all individuals, unable to move like hammered-in nails, but it doesn’t need to disturb anyone because we are building a level of connection above it.

Question: Will a person still feel lonely then?

Answer: A person will not feel lonely because he will be expressing his individuality in connection with others. These two levels—the personal, individual level, and the common, integral level—will exist parallel to each other and will support one another.

Then, the personality of each individual will begin to be expressed even more brightly and distinctly, but this will not lead to negative consequences and loneliness. If each is created with their own unique qualities, then when these qualities are expressed even more brightly, it will only be of benefit to others and never to their detriment.

Two of the most important milestones in child development is the emergence of personal individuality and, above it, mutual interdependence. As it is said, “Love covers all transgressions.” In this context, a person uses his individuality with the goal of correct connection with others.

Nature builds us in such a way that if we use my individual qualities for connection with others with the intention to fulfill them, and others do the same with respect to us, then this is a point where we are not just connecting mechanically as cogs in a machine, but are creating a perfect system.

When we correctly connect to this system, we begin to feel the one who is spinning us—the upper force of nature. And then we begin to interact and spin in harmony with this force; in other words, we achieve union with it.

Question: Why does this painful sensation of loneliness appear within us at this point in time? What does this stage of human evolution mean? This did not exist to such an extent earlier in history.

Answer: We completed our “linear” evolution and now must add to it “circular,” integral development. With all the individuality and uniqueness of each, we must discover how to correctly use our special abilities for positive connection between us and build a perfect system. This is the final stage of the program of creation.

Generation Gap, Part 2

laitman_290Question: Each generation is characterized by different values: some value money, others knowledge, and every subsequent generation will decreasingly appreciate the material and will increasingly seek inner values.

The gap between the generations becomes so huge that it is unclear how parents can today bring up a new generation living in a world that is completely unfamiliar to us. After all, we grew up in the old world, which perhaps has already passed into history.

Answer: This is rightly noticed. Imagine that a pair of dinosaurs gave birth to a monkey, marking the beginning of a new era that will last many thousands of years ahead. And these dinosaurs look at the monkey and do not know what to do with it. It is not even clear what to feed the monkey, how to play with it, what to talk about.

This is how we often feel today in the role of parents-dinosaurs, whose baby monkey was born a thousand times smarter than us. A child also looks at his parents and does not understand what they want from him. His parents do not understand him and they have no connection with his world. They are connected with him only financially, so he waits to be fed, given money, and left alone.

After all, he wants to realize himself in life, like every generation, meaning, to fill his desires. And these desires are not at all like those of his parents. Parents wanted to dress nicely, and the young man does not think about clothes.

Parents appreciated classical music, and the child starts itching from it, and he does not understand how it can be listened to. The entire culture of parents is so opposite to the culture of children that there is no understanding between them.

Some do not understand others and cannot understand. They meet only on the ground of food and money—as far as bodily desires are concerned. But even in the bodily desires, there are differences among us: what we eat is not the same, the concept of work, money, and career in the sense that is familiar for us, no longer exists for the younger generation.

It follows its own nature and does not want to adapt to the nature of its parents. The child thinks that since his parents gave birth to him, now they are obliged to provide for him—perhaps even until the end of life.
Parents hurried to get an occupation quickly, to start working, and to create a family. But their children do not have such thoughts and motivations; they are ready to spend their entire lives in their parents’ house, in their room, with their computer.

Question: And what do you advise parents to do in such situation?

Answer: Nothing can be done if parents and children do not reach the same depth. To do this, they need to obtain a similar level of inner development so that it becomes common to both of them, a kind of “common denominator.” And at the moment we do not have such a common denominator; it can only be in the future, depending on where the younger generation can reach in the development of the soul.

In every person there is a part that is eternal, not subject to time and does not change with years. If I, who am seventy, and my grandson, who is now ten years old, begin to work together on our soul, then we will have a common place— eternal and perfect.

It will be very important for the child; in fact, this topic is much closer to the modern generation than all the previous ones. And through it we can achieve contact, connection, mutual understanding, and support—a truly global life.

I see this in two of my children, who, like myself, are engaged in Kabbalah. Therefore, there is no misunderstanding between us because they feel that Kabbalah speaks about the meaning of life, about its purpose, and this occupation will never become obsolete.

About Love For Yourself

laitman_527_02Question: Is self-love a bad thing?

Answer: On the contrary, it is a necessary sensation in a person when he or she realizes that one loves oneself and does everything for one’s own good. For the sake of this good, he discovers the method of attaining life until he reaches its essence. All this stems only from self-love, from great egoism.

Question: Is self-love an attribute of egoism?

Answer: Self-love is egoism: I love myself and want to fill myself, it is crucial for me.

Alone In A Crowd Of A Billion, Part 3

laitman_232_08.jpgThe problem of loneliness enveloping the modern world is related to the inner emptiness of man. And even when a person wants to rid himself of this state, he has no idea how to do it.

This is neither taught to us by our teachers in school nor by our psychologists and psychiatrists. The fact is that they too are lonely, and that’s why they cannot help us by giving advice on how to be free of loneliness and how to bring people closer.

No one knows how to even begin to bring such extreme individualists as our contemporaries closer to each other. Here only the science of Kabbalah can help because it explains how to establish contact above our egoism so that love can cover all transgressions.

The individuality of each remains, we are not trying to break anyone; rather, we are building one more level atop our nature: a level of unity, a common roof. We, individuals, exist under this roof and we build it together for the sake of harmonious existence and a happy life.

This roof is raised on the second floor. It does not cancel our individual qualities, but only helps us build a correct connection above them. Our relationships come to exist on two different levels, that is, on the inner level, I remain isolated and infinitely distant from others, while on the “second floor,” in the common connection built between us, we lock ourselves into a circle.

Inside of me is a “straight line” and my inner personal state doesn’t concern anyone. But with respect to others, I am completely open and ready to be with everyone as one man with one heart.

This is integration above isolation; in other words, both exist at the same time. This is a new method of connection derived from the wisdom of Kabbalah, and it must be taught to humanity. External interactions are built by the method of the circle, the method of integral connection, while the inner approach refers to the person himself.

In essence, these are not two distinct methods. They turn into one because the stronger we connect between us, the more it helps us develop internally, in our individual forms. It turns out that a person’s egoism continues to develop and grow. And this is exactly what enables us to build relationships between us as we connect in a circle; we are able to do this due to the fact that we are becoming continuously more egoistic.

Alone In A Crowd Of A Billion, Part 2

Laitman_182_02Modern society consists of individuals who do not want to be tied to others, or more accurately, they are unable to connect with others, while on the other hand, we understand that without connection to others, we will end up empty and unhappy.

We cannot enjoy life in solitude without a family, without children, and without real friends.

Everyone suffers from this problem of loneliness and no one knows how to solve it. A new educational system is needed for this, a powerful and broad system with specialists who understand the root of the problem and the means of resolving it.

Otherwise, the problem will progress further. No one will want to marry or have children, the use of narcotics and antidepressants will grow, and terrorism will rise because people will lose all hope for a better future.

At one time, a person was a social creature. He lived in a society and felt that he was supported by a large social network of many others. But today, we have developed so much that our egoism does not desire social interaction, making us complete individualists, and modern technological development allows us to easily live alone, spending our time in front of a TV screen, computer, or smartphone.

But ultimately, all these toys do not bring a person spiritual fulfillment, and he finds himself lonely and unhappy, feeling that he must fill himself with something. An inner emptiness remains in him. It is always possible to go on another trip to another country, but then you return and again find yourself alone.

In other words, a person understands that he needs some kind of additional fulfillment. It seems that we arrived at a red line in our development when we need to decide what to do next.

Question: If it is natural for a person to continuously become a bigger and bigger individualist, then why are we not happy to remain alone? Why do we suffer from loneliness?

Answer: Egoism develops in a straight line and makes us greater individualists, but at the same time, beginning around the 1950’s, the system began to lock into a circle and bind us into integral interdependence. The system demands kind, internal, deeper connections between us, not just to have acquaintances at work. We are obligated to fulfill our desire to be in this one system with everyone. A person does not yet understand this desire, so he finds himself developing in two different ways at the same time, linearly and circularly, while subconsciously wanting these two forms to support one another and function mutually.

A person does not understand why the world suddenly turned into a small village. He thinks that it is only the scientists, politicians, and corporations that depend on one another and that none of it is relevant for him. But, no, we see that all of nature is locked into a circle. On one side of the world, something explodes, and on the other side, we see the effects because everything depends on everything else. Nature shows us how impersonal and integrated it is.

The same degree of integration is now developing in human society, but as yet, this development does not demand integral connection from the individual. We are not yet aware of this need, but soon we will be required to acknowledge it.

Nature seeks to bring us closer to one another so strongly that soon we will not have a choice. If we want to guarantee ourselves real inner fulfillment in life, we will need to find the correct formula for connection between us.
