How to Become Needed

627.1Question: Do you know how many elderly people feel unnecessary? Neither their children, nor their grandchildren, nor anyone else needs them. There are so many like that. They feel that nobody needs them. How can a person learn to feel needed?

Answer: I believe the key is not to look for someone who needs you on a personal level but rather to ask: What can I do that would be good and useful for a large number of people, for all of humanity?

Question: Really?

Answer: Of course. Today, everything is designed to make us as independent from each other as possible. And when someone tries to step in and help, we do not want that.

Question: So you mean that a simple grandmother can open herself up to the world and can be useful to the world, to people?

Answer: Absolutely! If she understands what true benefit for the world and for others means, she will find her place in it.

Question: Can you gently suggest what kind of benefit she might bring to the world?

Answer: She can teach herself and others how to be properly interconnected with one another; that would bring an enormous positive force into the world and make the world better.

Question: That is, she should just think about this connection every day and try to build it in some way?

Answer: She can do it this way, yes.

Comment: Especially in the age of the Internet. That could give her a sense of being needed.

My Response: Yes.

Question: Is the desire to feel needed the meaning of life? Could that be the meaning of my life?

Answer: No, that is not the meaning. It is only a means. The meaning of life must be something higher than that.

Question: Is the meaning of life in establishing good, kind connections with others, as you said?

Answer: Yes. Absolutely!

Question: And that meaning will fill a person?

Answer: It certainly will. A person will begin to feel that he has this meaning. Through this fulfillment, through the connection between us, we rise to the next level, and we can fill ourselves for another hundred years ahead.

We enter a system in which we are all connected. It is an entirely new sense of life. We live as if in a single body.

Question: Could there be a “second youth” after 70 or 80 in the sense that you are describing?

Answer: Absolutely! A person opens himself up to the society that he is in, that he is helping to build.

Question: And his thoughts about good connections, new connections, are those thoughts renewing?

Answer: That is exactly what we need to do.

How Can You Accept the Opinion of the Group?

527Question: How can a person bring themselves to accept the opinion of the group by force?

Answer: This is the most difficult question. How can a person, with all their accumulated qualities, powers, and traits, accept the direction of the group? How can they do this every moment in accordance with their development, when they are within a group? Where is that button you can press so that the engine does not stop?

This is exactly what we must do. Where can you find the strength to listen to the group, submit to it, and receive from it what it gives? This is precisely what you must force yourself to do each time. This is called “buy yourself a friend.”

But the group is not just friends. “Haver” (friend) is an equal, from the word “Hibur” (connection). The group is also the teacher, something that dictates to you what to do, something whose opinion you must accept above your own.

Study the articles of Rabash about the group, and perhaps you will find advice on how to truly bow your head and receive this idea from the group.

It’s Better to Sit and Do Nothing

571.01Question: What has happened to humanity? We used to want to study, get degrees, become directors, and earn money!

Answer: But why? We are aware of the uselessness of all these tensions.

People still play sports. They climb mountains and do other things, hold competitions in fashion, in sports, and in everything else. That too will pass.

The most important question is why?

Comment: He will kill everything.

My Response: Yes, and humanity will calm down. And what will happen? Nothing. We will simply relate to each other.

Question: This is unclear. What does it mean “simply relate to each other”?

Answer: Simply, meaning in such a way that you do not cause anyone any negative feelings.

Question: Not to evoke hatred toward yourself?

Answer: Calmness! Just get your salary and spend the day as you wish. You will have enough time and desire to get used to this world and learn how to behave in it.

Comment: So the demand for more money, a bigger house, a pool in the yard…

My Response: There will be none of that. A person will begin to understand that he must live within his sensations, in a movement toward the correct attitude with others, an internal movement. And then a person who care about one’s specialty, salary, or anything.

If I have such an attitude toward others and I feel that others have the same attitude toward me, this mutual good network of forces between us, I feel it, I live in it. That is my work, I exist in it and so do all the others.

We only develop these mutual sensations of ours, without any effort. It should be without effort! This is how I treat others and others treat me, and everything freezes. And only that is the only feeling you perceive.

Question: And when you say: overcome our egoism, rise above egoism?

Answer: It is all inside. Just calm down.

Question: And it will be so calm? I always have the feeling that a person must make enormous efforts.

Answer: No, no, nothing! Quite the opposite. Why? If we relate to it correctly, then the upper light, which is in absolute rest, it will do everything. Just don’t worry. Just don’t interfere. “The Creator will finish it for me.” It is that simple.

Question: Harvard University, Princeton, etc. will not be needed?

Answer: No, nothing at all is needed.

Question: And studies, higher education, second, and third degrees?

Answer: No, not needed.

Comment: Humanity built all this for so long.

My Response: It was in order to define its mistakes.

Question: What will humanity come to?

Answer: To a peaceful, inner mutual balance. And in it, the connection between us will be revealed as complete and peaceful. In the stillness of these waters, we will come to the point that we will see through them the Creator.

In the Torah, this was formulated thousands of years ago: “It is preferable to sit and do nothing.”

Question: What does “do nothing” mean?

Answer: Do nothing! Do it so that from doing nothing, you have everything. You will see it is possible.

Question: So I will have food, something to feed the family with?

Answer: To the extent that it is necessary for you, you will work. But it will not be labor. It will simply be an occupation.

Question: It is not like I go to work suffering, hate it, and still go?

Answer: You will not be rushing around and suffering in traffic jams, none of that will happen.

Question: Will this thought penetrate? “What is enough is enough for me, and I do not need more.”

Answer: It will come gradually, but it will also come quickly.

Don’t Take on the Work of the Creator

232.1Question: You often say that we should not confuse our work with the work of the Creator, not to take on His work. What does this mean?

Answer: Our work is directed toward feeling an acute lack for the Creator to carry out each next action upon us. And nothing more. After all, all spiritual work is the work of the Creator. It is even called “the work of the Creator.”

But does a person do nothing? He makes efforts in his desires so that the Creator (the light) would work on him.

How Does the Desire Change?

We should not engage in trying to change the desire, because it is not in our hands to do so. A person cannot change desires. Our preparation is to discern that a desire to change desire is no good, that the created being cannot change anything. Desires were created by the Creator. We cannot change our desires by ourselves, nor even shift from one thought to another or from one desire to another, within them. This takes place only from above, through changes in the light.

Correct Development

942If we are developing correctly and feel that we want to unite but are unable to do so by ourselves, then a third factor enters the picture—the Creator.

It is not just me and the group; He must be present within it. He must be the goal for me. He must become the performer of the action, and this is a sign of correct development.

By desiring to unite with the group, I thereby create a Kli within which He must dwell.

I am ready to give myself over to it, but what I currently lack is the understanding of the necessity for this to be for the sake of the Creator, so that the Creator will dwell within this connection.

The lack of this understanding comes from the fact that He is concealed.

But soon, from the suffering, from understanding the necessity, it will be revealed that He must be here. When these three factors: me, the group, and the Creator merge as one, it will happen.

Understand the Creator’s Plan

235In the generations from Adam to Noah and from Noah onward, both in the people of Israel and among the nations of the world, the Aviut (the thickness of the desire) was still very small.

Abraham is unique in his generation in that a yearning for the Creator was revealed in him despite the fact that his father Terach was an idol-worshipper and engaged in Avoda Zara (foreign work), meaning he believed that there are many forces in the world besides the Creator that each act independently.

If a person “sees” that all these forces govern him for better or worse, he turns to each of them. He does not consider that behind them stands another force, one that unites them all, possesses thought, has a program and a goal for humanity, and uses all these forces merely as its messengers, messengers that have no program of their own, no free will, and no particular relation to a person. He does not believe that everything is governed by a single force.

This in essence is the qualitative difference between Abraham and his father. The approach that one must believe there is a single force and seek it replaces the former view of nature as a collection of many forces. This refers to a qualitative effort and distinction that requires a special purification of the “body,” that is, the desire to receive.

Abraham taught this to his followers; he taught that behind all the forces stands a single thought, a single desire. None of the individual forces contains good or evil; behind them is one thought that is good and benevolent to both the wicked and the righteous, which leads a person to the goal.

Good and evil, though perceived differently by us, serve one purpose. We must understand the plan of the Creator and accept it, relate to it rationally, correctly, and develop ourselves accordingly.

The Creator demands that we participate in our development from our own independent desire. This is the only way we can be truly independent; it is by strengthening ourselves on the path of development, that is, by accepting His program and realizing it.

In essence, no one in the generation of Abraham, except Abraham himself, grasped this idea. People did not yet have a prepared foundation within their souls to reveal the true picture of reality. Abraham, however, came to this through purification, that is, a special quality in the soul.

What Does a Kabbalist Want?

278.03I want to see everything in this world that can be seen and achieve everything in it that can be achieved. In the spiritual realm, that is not a problem. But to embody spirituality in this world, that is the real task.

I am not concerned with how long I live. I want to see the world accept the wisdom of Kabbalah as the method for its continued existence, a method for rising from temporary life on Earth into another dimension: the spiritual one.

When people begin to feel this, to accept this theory and way of life, when they come to see that they must rise to the next stage, that this entire world we currently perceive and experience is a kind of construct that exists only in order to ascend above it, when they accept what Baal HaSulam and my teacher, his eldest son Rabash, have prepared for them, then that will truly be the straight path to the light.

But until then, who knows what suffering humanity may still have to endure? One way or another, it will reach this conclusion, but whether it happens with minimal pain, that, no one knows.

That is why I would like to be present in all the decisions and help humanity take its first steps toward accepting Kabbalah as the method for its final development.

Is Prayer a Means?

Prayer is not merely a means. We refine our desire to make it better, to make it function, and to assume another form through prayer. What is prayer? It is a deficiency within the desire, a request for the desire to change.
