Mutual Scrutinies

942Question: If a thought comes like light, but I don’t let it into the Kli, and it doesn’t become reality, but remains outside as light that I don’t give form to, can it be said that this emptiness already contains equivalence of form?

Can bestowal begin not from desire, but from emptiness?

Answer: I wouldn’t say so. Let’s work through the questions and answers together, and you’ll see that by the end of the convention, the path will become more or less clear to you, what we are asking for and how we plan to reach the end.

A Willingness to Listen

267.01If I weren’t involved in dissemination, I wouldn’t leave the house. Ever. If we start asking ourselves whether the world is expecting this from us, whether it will look at it favorably…

How could the world possibly look at us favorably?! From the start, we must completely throw out any possibility of trying to accommodate that! We should only care about one thing: how to present ourselves as pleasantly as possible in their eyes, but without compromising our mission. No distortion, no substitution of the task.

“As pleasantly as possible” means that since it’s hard for them to grasp our idea, we should make it as easy as possible for them to perceive it. But aside from that, we must be like flint. This is what is entrusted to us, and this is what I do. People receive it just fine.

I have given lectures in various countries before thousands of people who had no favorable attitude toward me, toward Israel, or toward Kabbalah.

But when I explained that there is a difference between me and them, and that I had come to speak precisely about that difference, about the purpose of the world, why it exists, what I must do in it, and what you must do in it, and why for thousands of years we have been in this opposition, where it comes from and for what reason—they listened!

There is a willingness to listen because the problem is evident. Moreover, they responded calmly, without shouting, without voicing opposition not against me nor against the topic. They listened from beginning to end. The explanation was simple. This should always be our motto, the central message of every one of our presentations.

Otherwise, why did you come? To talk about the upper worlds? Why? Baal HaSulam says: What do I care how many angels are in heaven and what their names are? You came to speak about what truly concerns us, and that it concerns us for a reason. And the audience will listen.

The Work of the Group

938.01Question: By what means can one feel that even a momentary detachment from the concern for mutual guarantee (Arvut) is a descent?

Answer: Only the group can give us such a feeling, an awareness, a sense of importanc, that without Arvut I would feel myself in a terrible state.

Baal HaSulam writes that everything depends on the revelation of evil. If I have a microscope, I see that microbes are a terrifying thing. But if I do not have one, it does not bother me; I drink the water calmly.

But if I look through the microscope and see what is going on in there, I will see terrible creatures! How they devour each other! And they will devour me too! And then I draw back. So it all depends on the revelation of evil.

I cannot see this on my own, but if a thousand people around me speak about it, it becomes not just a thousand times, but a million times more tangible for me.

But a person must be ready to listen to the group. And the group must be wise enough to build the process of convincing a person in such a way that it truly enters him. We need to understand that each one of us is closed off. A person is not able to perceive this. It is really necessary to break through his shell and get inside. That is the work of the group.

Devote Yourself to the Group

938.07A person chooses a group based on what he feels in his soul; these people belong to the same idea to which he wants to advance. No one can tell him: “Choose this or that.”

He himself, as a result of his suffering, based on his life experience, even if he is young and lacks experience, feels that he wants such development. This is the guiding hand of the Creator in him.

It is the Creator who finds the group for him and brings him into it. What is incumbent upon the person is only to try to devote himself to the group in such a way that it will “brainwash” him and impart to him all its opinions, thoughts, and desires for progressing in the right direction.

If a person is ready to receive only this from the group, here lies his free choice; it is to place himself in relation to the group so that it gives him advancement and not to scatter himself among various other things. After all, everything he does is only in order to receive direction from the group, the very direction for which he initially came to it.

Then a person advances, and his advancement goes above reason because initially he does not want it. But with the help of the group, he finds the strength to move forward. If he were alone, he would not have the strength to rise above his own reason. Whatever reason he would choose, it would be his reason; it would not be above his reason.

Questions about Spiritual Work—233

213Question: I managed to implement the rule “If I am not for myself, who is for me,” because I feel that no one else will do it for me.

But to fulfill “There is none else besides Him,” I make efforts and act with the strength the Creator gives me. Yet after the work is done, I cannot agree that there were no efforts of my own and that everything was done by the Creator.

What should I do with these feelings? Forget them? Dismiss them? Turn away? Because I cannot reconcile the two rules. And if I could, I cannot imagine what the result would be.

Answer: Yes, you are right. Everyone faces this dilemma, and each person must try to resolve it for themselves.

Question: Is a person able to hold on to intention during the action?

Answer: What a person is capable of or not, we should not say that now. Once it becomes clear who we are, only then can we pass such a verdict.

Question: We carry out actions both in the material and the spiritual. We perform them. Then comes the realization: “Everything the Creator does is for the best,” meaning “There is none else besides Him.”

We enter this state, it settles within us as if some kind of chip is implanted in us.

Does this state get transmitted in some way to all of humanity? Is that our way of giving to the world? We want to be the Creator’s helpers in the salvation of all humanity.

Answer: That is bestowal and it is transmitted.

When One Wants to Pray without Stopping

938.03Question: At this convention it feels like there are no questions, rather just a strong, continuous desire to pray so that this prayer reaches the Creator.

Tell us, what should the prayer at this convention be? What should we pray for?

Answer: That is something you need to tell me.

Question: You say that we need to refine the request, to structure it. There is a prayer: “Unite us, raise us to You, help us all come together to the king’s palace!” But somehow it dissipates.

Answer: Then raise the prayer from one person, from yourself.

Question: How do I do it correctly?

Answer: From the heart.

Question: Do I need to feel everyone and unite them in my heart?

Answer: Start and then you will see.
