If You Want to Turn to the Creator

562.02The Creator stands behind your hater, the enemy stands behind him. If you want to turn to the Creator, you must somehow break through the heart of your enemy with your attitude.

Comment: But this is an unbearable condition.

My Response: This is an unbearable condition, which means, we will die, from century to century.

Question: Do you think this is the main condition?

Answer: Yes! It should become something that I must see in everyone, my beloved people. Moreover, there are particles of the Creator, His messengers, representatives.

If I treat everything around me in this way, I will suddenly see that the Creator is clothed in them. He is in them, fills them, and in general, it is all Him. Everything!

Question: The person hears you, and everything turns inside out. He says: “It is not just impossible!” What should he do, the way he is?

Answer: Turn over. Roll over!

Question: And here too, should I ask the Creator: “Give me the opportunity to turn over”?

Answer: Of course! And who am I? Some kind of selfish little part that is not capable of anything.

Question: So I am able only if I turn to the Creator, that I want to turn over and approach my enemy, and embrace him, and raise a prayer with him?

Answer: I ask the Creator to allow me to do this, to show me, to teach, to push, and that my opponent would also want the same thing, would agree with me. Because I see both myself and my opponent as an act of the Creator. That the Creator is pointing us at each other like this, pushing horns against each other, inciting us.

And that is why I ask the Creator to bring us closer, to open arms instead of fists, so that we gradually show our love for each other. Right down to love.

Comment: If the world could hear you…

My Response: If people want to, that is the problem. And the Creator is ready for it if people want to. If they want to, it depends on the suffering they feel.

What Is Happiness?

293.1Comment: According to Dr. Robert Lustig, professor emeritus at University of California, San Francisco, happiness and pleasure are not really the same.

He asserts that pleasure is short-lived and visceral and happiness is long-lived and ethereal. Pleasure is taking, while happiness is giving. Pleasure is usually experienced alone, while happiness is usually social.

My Response: Indeed pleasure is an animate state in which my body enjoys. Happiness, on the other hand, is eternal and complete. It requires stepping out of oneself and rising above oneself. It is connected with a higher purpose, eternity, and true achievement.

Can both be combined? Yes, if I elevate all my pleasures to the level of happiness. Then by rising above my body, I will bring all the best to others, and in this I will find true pleasure and true happiness for myself.

Adaptation of Kabbalistic Texts

112Question: Often when we prepare material for dissemination, we try to include either your text or that of Baal HaSulam or Rabash in it. Does this actually work?

Answer: I do not think this is always justified because anyone who studies Kabbalah may be beyond all the original texts. After all, they are complex, intricate, and intended for a certain level. I would not do it.

Perhaps by including quotes, people are trying to shield themselves by saying, “Well, that is how it is written,” or they assume that what moves them will also move the consumer who is not familiar with Kabbalah. I doubt it.

I would not say I find it necessary. On the contrary, in all my early books, I rewrote everything into modern, somewhat scientific language to steer the reader away from thinking about Kabbalah and instead to allow them to feel or understand the information directly on the platform they are used to perceiving it.

I do not think it is necessary to introduce them to archaisms or other Kabbalistic “isms.” Why? The text should be presented in a way that makes it easier for a person to understand. As it is said: “Teach a child according to his way.”

Comment: But you did slightly modify Shamati, for example. That is, you wrote a book based on it.

My Response: In Hebrew, I did not modify Shamati at all. I only added punctuation marks, as they were quite chaotic. But in Russian, I made it a bit more fluid because otherwise the reader would not be able to absorb it; it would be a hindrance for them.

Comment: But in Russian, you wrote Attaining the Worlds Beyond, in which you included some elements from Shamati and presented them in a very pleasant, not dry form.

My Response: That is how it turned out because I processed it through myself. First, it is a translation, and second, a retelling. So I allowed myself that freedom. Moreover, Attaining the Worlds Beyond is not just from Shamati, it is from everything. It wrote this book in just ten days. It just poured out of me.

How Should We Behave in a Kabbalistic Group: To Act According to Our Truth or to Pretend?

There are two types of behavior in a Kabbalistic society and group:

1) Behavior characteristic of the greatest Kabbalists who have burning hearts within yet who exhibit disdainful behavior on the outside. This is like the behavior of the Hasidim of Kotzk (as described in the book Sneh Boer B’Kotzk). These were people who, inwardly, had reached high levels of understanding, yearning, true work, and constant inner effort, while outwardly they displayed open contempt. They did so to such an extent that people were even convinced that they were non-Jews. They entered the synagogue on Yom Kippur with crumbs of bread in their beards and did other things deliberately and defiantly so that outsiders would have no hold on their inner work, and they did this with utmost seriousness.

2) Behavior characteristic of our generation, where it is forbidden to show disdain, and instead it is required to express inspiration for the group. This is because we all need spiritual inspiration from the group, otherwise we will be spiritually lost. How? In our current state, we are only impressed by externality because we cannot see into our friends’ hearts. If everyone were to show disdain, we would also become disdainful.

It might be that all of our friends are completely righteous, but their external behavior will be exactly as the sages’ recommend in order to prevent any hold by outsiders. However, if they behave this way in front of us, we will not perceive this truth, but we will instead focus on their outward, false behavior, and we will thus become confused and abandon the whole matter.

Therefore, it is necessary to behave the opposite way. We should adopt a behavior that seems as if we truly desire spirituality, as if we love each other, as if we are willing to do everything for one another. Although this is an outward act and we all know it is a pretense, our body understands what it sees and hears, it believes only what it sees, and it is impressed by this outward behavior as though it were real.

Psychologists who study the body’s reactions also recommend that people tell their spouses every day, “I love you,” even when they are angry or feel a lack of love. If they repeat this sentence to their spouse, that is what the spouse hears, and the love reaches their heart with that sentence. This is how we need to act with the body in spiritual work. We should say: “The Creator is great, I love my friends, the goal is important,” and so on. Accordingly, the body will absorb that these things are important and significant.

This is how it works in our world. Fashion and tastes change and fluctuate. They have no real significance, no hold in reality; they are just illusions. But when importance is suddenly attributed to something and people worship it, even if it is empty of content, it becomes important to us as well because everyone says so. This is how it works also in spiritual work. Therefore, we need to openly demonstrate and discuss the importance of the spiritual goal and the Creator.

I Want to Live Inside The Book of Zohar

526The Book of Zohar is sacred and speaks in a completely unique language, an extraordinarily precise one. It allows us to grasp the entire global picture and then focus on a single specific detail that it wishes to reveal. It has the power to expand one’s vision to the maximum and then contract it down to a single point.

And when we read Kabbalistic texts, The Zohar or the writings of Baal HaSulam or Rabash, we must connect with our hearts to the one who is transmitting this knowledge to us.

For example, if we take The Introduction to The Book of Zohar by Baal HaSulam, we see that his intention with this introduction is to connect each of us to The Zohar for All, that is, to the book that should be the most sought-after among the entire nation of Israel. It is for this purpose that he wrote and disseminated this introduction.

When we begin to read such texts, we must distance ourselves from literal interpretations and strive to connect with the spiritual message that the Kabbalist wishes to convey to us. And after reading each passage, we must return to it and try to let these words enter our hearts, so that through them we can connect our hearts with the heart of its author Baal HaSulam.

The works of the Kabbalists are of immense importance to us, because they are messages passed down to us by our teachers. Through this message they wish to bind us with a thousand threads between us and with The Book of Zohar. In The Introduction to The Book of Zohar, we can find all the words and laws that will help us draw closer to the Creator and cleave to Him. These texts connect us to spirituality and eternity.

If a person aspires to connect with the spiritual source through The Book of Zohar, then each time they return to it they will discover how this text increasingly ties them to the spiritual in all its forms. And then they fully open their eyes and heart with the sole desire to ascend and cleave to the spiritual root of which The Zohar speaks.

And even when I am not reading The Book of Zohar, I want to live inside it. That is, I strive to be connected with my friends, with the group, and with my ten, and in this way I draw closer and closer to the Creator until I see that I have entered a certain gravitational zone where the Creator begins to pull me inward into this field.

To live inside The Book of Zohar means to strive to reveal what this book wants to tell me with each of its words and sentences. And then The Zohar draws me into a stream that carries me from the beginning of the book to its last word.

276.03Comment: Scientists surveyed over 1,300 people aged 21 and above. Those who had a clear understanding of the meaning of life were happier and healthier than those still searching for it. In other words, those looking for the meaning of life aren’t well.

My Response: The main thing is to find your natural point in which you are already living. Or it might even be in development, but you are within it, and are not floundering without knowing where.

Comment: But you keep saying that searching for the meaning of life is good.

My Response: I am not saying that a person doesn’t understand the meaning of life. One should determine what that meaning is and pursue it. Moving toward the meaning of life, where you understand and know how and what, gives you immense satisfaction, delight, and tranquility, along with great dissatisfaction and internal imbalance.

Comment: Ups and downs.

My Response: Yes! But you derive immense pleasure from all of it. You enjoy the process. It is a “storm petrel.”

Question: And if you experience descent and despair and you wonder if you have chosen the right path?

Answer: But that is better than being an inanimate element. Work in an office and stay at home watching football? Or not? It depends on each person’s values.

Question: So you believe in the studies you have experienced and tested yourself?

Answer: First of all, I do not believe anyone in the world. Because there is no one to believe. We see what is happening in the world. Therefore I trust only myself, my experiments, my universities.

Question: And they say that you find the meaning of life after long searches, adhering to your teacher, and proceeding? Through ups and downs.

Answer: Only in this way.

Comment: I remember you saying that you had such descents that you could not even get out of bed.

My Response: That is natural. But that is the path of searching. You cannot escape it.

Question: And do you call that a happy path?

Answer: Absolutely! Of course! “Exultation in battle,” in the fall.

Question: What would you wish for people embarking on the path of searching for the meaning of life?

Answer: I wish people would enjoy the metamorphoses happening within them. Everything that occurs, everything that boils inside—that is life! Don’t grow old prematurely. Try not to, at least internally.
I cannot climb mountains; I cannot fight the waves of a raging sea. No. But all of that exists inside me, and all of that gives the feeling of life.

Question: So you mean that a person stays young regardless of one’s age?

Answer: Of course!

What Will Compel Jews to Change?

294.2We must create ourselves into a people that will exist in the mutual property of love and complete connection with each other. In this way we will resemble, not the nature of our world, but the nature of the upper world, which will be able to pass through us and pour into our world.

Then all the nations of the world—and subsequently all of nature: animal, vegetative, and inanimate—will receive this upper vitalizing force.

Without it the world will simply wither away until it explodes and disappears. This is true according to the true, spiritual laws of nature. By spiritual, I mean based not on egoism, but on the quality of bestowal. This is what we must pass to the world. If we do not do it, the world will instinctively demand it of us.

We cannot continue to exist in our current form. This is a people unable even to think that it must change. As the saying goes, “a stiff-necked people,” so it is.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, awakens the Jews. The nations of the world yes, but the Jews no.
Herein, perhaps, lies a certain chance for salvation through the nations of the world in a good and swift way, maybe they will still compel the people of Israel to think about their mission.

Then this will be a serious point of our correct reckoning with the Creator. We have no one to rely on but only our connection with Him. And we will have to establish this connection correctly.

Questions about Spiritual Work—229

570Question: How can one maintain a state of constant service to the Creator rather than in prayer?

Answer: We must try to remain merged with the Creator at all times despite any changes that seem good or bad to us; we need to perceive them all in one direction, with one purpose influencing us. Then we will understand Him more quickly.

Question: We have the concept of intention, which, as I see it, serves as a trigger in inner work. How does a person’s intention help him transition from a state of descent to ascent?

Answer: Intention means that a person who seeks to be closer to the Creator chooses from all their possibilities the one that would bring them nearer to Him.

Question: What work should we do throughout the day to maintain the inner connection with the ten?

Answer: Strengthen your connection with the Creator based on the connections and bonds that manifest between you.

Question: How can one speed up the process of emerging from a descent to reach the recognition of evil?

Answer: I can say only one thing: strive toward the point of connection between a person and the Creator from any state you go through. From any state! Because all these states are given to us by the Creator with only one purpose so that at this point He reveals in us, we discover Him.
