Through Your Actions, I Know You

36How do I study the actions of the Creator? I imitate them like an infant. I observe what the Creator does.

The upper descends to the lower, He gives me an example, shows me what I should do. Then, I repeat this example.

Indeed, I do this with His help, relying on His strength, but I strive to carry out the examples He shows me. This is exactly how we teach infants. By doing so, I acquire His reason.

The Creator shows me what needs to be done, how, and in what sequence. Absolutely everything I receive comes from above because I myself know nothing. I simply copy these actions and repeat them mechanically because I do not yet have a reason.

This approach is called “Through Your actions, I know You.” I repeat all these actions, and as a result, I gain reason.

Seven Principles of Successful Life

627.2Question: What is money? What is striving toward a goal? How can one change habits? What does Kabbalah say about this?

Answer: It is very simple. Money (Kesef) is a covering. “Kesef” comes from the word “Kisuf,” which means covering, that is, a covering over my desires.

Money is not just paper or something stored in a bank. If I can cover my desires and aspirations for what I want with a screen, it is considered that I pay for my desires. Through this covering, I can rise above them from the desire to receive to the desire to bestow, and thereby achieve any fulfillment according to the strength of my desire.

Question: With money, I can satisfy my desires. But what does it mean to cover desires with a screen?

Answer: To cover means that a desire is truly fulfilled only by its covering, which is the transformation of the intention behind the desire from oneself to others.

If we want to earn correctly, to truly earn life, then we need to understand what money is, what covering means, and what the transformation of intention is. It is about a screen that covers egoistic desires and transforms them into altruistic ones, and in this altruistic light, we begin to receive upper fulfillments. This is true wealth.

Question: Do a person’s thoughts shape their life?

Answer: In general, yes.

Question: What are thoughts, and how can one change the course of thoughts to shape and improve life?

Answer: A person’s thoughts shape their life, meaning their attitude toward who they are, what they are, what surrounds them, and their purpose. All of these are called their thoughts.

One must answer questions such as: “Why do I exist? What is happening to me? How will my life end?” Initially, these questions may arise purely in an egoistic form, but one must start answering them. They must understand that if they focus only on satisfying their egoism, they will end up in portions and eventually finish the same way. And then what? Until they die. Because our physiological, animalistic body defines our life.

If I want to rise to the next level, to exist not in the animalistic body, but in the spiritual one, I need to rise and begin to exist according to entirely different values, not to fill my physical body and see that as the purpose of life, but to fill myself with qualities of bestowal and love, qualities that resemble the Creator. This is a completely different value system.

Here, a person faces a significant challenge. It feels as if they are in a vast field meant for them to explore asking why, for what purpose, and how to break away from past values, from wealth, money, notions of happiness, and egoistic success. They must begin to reposition themselves entirely differently regarding their existence.

Question: “We are slaves to our habits. Change your habits, and your life will change.” But what should we change them to?

Answer: They need to be replaced with some kind of spiritual actions and relationships. First, I must study them, understand where they come from, how they form, and how I can make these changes.

Question: What are truly good habits for a person?

Answer: There are no good habits. A habit, by its nature, cannot be good. Habits are always bad.

What can be good is when we rise from one positive action to an even greater positive action. But that is not a habit; it goes against our habits. This requires great effort and work on oneself.

Question: But for this, we need to have a distant goal to consistently overcome our habits, right?

Answer: Yes. In addition to having a distant goal, you also need a small group in which you can implement this.

Comment: “The main obstacles in life are self-doubt and fear. Our doubts paralyze us.”

My Response: Our doubts and fears drive us forward, and these are very good qualities of our nature.

Without doubts and fears, we would not move anywhere. We would dig into our current situation trying to minimize the feeling of evil and barely experience any good just to avoid triggering doubts and fears.
Let doubts and fears arise! Let them push and pressure us forward!

If I am in the right environment, all my doubts and fears will be directed correctly in my interactions with that environment, and together we will move forward. Nothing in nature is created in vain! Under no circumstances should we diminish, suppress, or erase anything!

Comment: “Goals should be clear, simple, and written down.”

My Response: A person who is truly developing has no clarity. They are constantly in turmoil and engaged in clarifications. As soon as they resolve something, new turmoil immediately arises.

A true human being is constantly in a state of turmoil and clarification, turmoil and clarification. Greater and greater desires, doubts, and thoughts arise in them. They continually ask themselves: “How can I truly find the purpose of life? What is worth living for?”

Comment: In one of your talks, you drew a coordinate system where a person moves along a sinusoid line, progressing toward the goal through increasing ruptures. I shared this example with a friend, and she said: “So do we have to hit rock bottom to rise again?”

My Response: Yes, of course! Even the greatest Kabbalists, before reaching complete correction, find themselves at the lowest point! Absolutely!

Question: What lifts a person from this rock bottom?

Answer: The environment and the upper light that one receives through it.

Comment: And here is one of the latest quotes: “Find the courage to go against the flow and get rich.”

My Response: This means going against egoism. It is possible. But keep in mind that you are weak, that you cannot do it alone! There is no need to fight stubbornly and go against everything if you are on your own.

You must build a system that will help you reach the goal. It should be a system within a group of like-minded people who have a clear goal. Only together, by constantly strengthening their connection, can they achieve the goal.

Comment: To conclude: “Poor, unlucky, unhappy, and unhealthy is the person who often uses the word ‘tomorrow’.”

My Response: Yes, of course. We have no right to postpone anything until tomorrow.

But that is not the only issue. Weakness is not just about procrastination. Weakness is in closing your eyes and refusing to connect with others.

To delay until tomorrow or not? The problem lies in this: all human actions depend on their interaction with others. If a person is in the right environment, they will not postpone anything until tomorrow. They will not even delay today, they will act immediately. The environment will compel them to move.

The most important thing is to establish the right connection with the right environment. There must be a group. Only then will they progress. The group determines everything. Find the right group, and you will find happiness.

Talks about the Steps of the Ladder, Part 32

Talks about the Steps of the Ladder, Part 32

Chapter 4 Between Fear and Joy

It is unclear why some things are counted while others are not. After all, we need to count what we have, to know where we stand, how much we have done, and how much more we can do. Even in the Shulchan Aruch, there are rules that require counting and rules that forbid it, all of which relate to spiritual work. Everything depends on the intent and purpose of the one who counts.

The will to receive was initially created in us with the intention to receive for oneself. If we approach the will to receive without intending to correct it, we must not count or dwell in it because doing so drains our strength, places us under the control of the will to receive for ourselves, and distances us from the purpose of creation.

However, if we examine both sides—first the right line and then the left—it becomes our duty to count what we have in the left line and determine how much we can take from it for correction. This is because our approach has become creative and beneficial for progress and correction. Therefore, everything depends on the intent and the approach to the will to receive. It is what lets us determine whether counting is permitted or forbidden.

Neutrality Is a Must

632.3Question: When I receive evil and aggression from a friend, do I just keep quiet and justify it as coming from the Creator, that there is none else besides Him? Can I somehow help my friend rise at this moment so he does not remain in an aggressive state?

Answer: This is a difficult question. Yes and no.

At least, do not respond to him aggressively. And also, not at this moment, but maybe later, show kindness.

Neutrality is mandatory here. Acting with kindness in response to aggression depends on the state your opponent is in at the moment. That is, how will it affect him? Will he take it correctly or not?

Maybe, on the contrary, it will bring out even more aggression in him. He barks at you, but you smile or want to kiss him, then he could hit you!

Therefore, you need to be very careful for your friend to perceive you correctly. You must understand him. You have to enter his state.

A Structure Similar to the Light

528.01I must always pray for the ten because it is my soul. From the spiritual point of view, I am nothing on my own; the upper light can only bounce off me.

When it shines on me, I feel either attraction to it or positive or negative suffering, but I cannot do anything about it. My conscious action can only come from movement together with those like me. I am obligated to create a structure similar to the light. A structure resembling the light is ten egoists united by a single goal. That is how we act.

It should be noted that women have a way to move forward as follows: if the women’s group unites as much as possible among themselves and, at the same time, helps the men’s group move forward, this constitutes their spiritual work and progress.

Balanced Actions

947Question: At the convention, a critical mass will gather, and by physically interacting with it, we will have a wonderful opportunity to “take off the gloves” on one hand.

On the other hand, this mass will help us annul ourselves.

How can we avoid extremes in this state, prioritize one over the other, and maintain balance?

Answer: I think everything begins with immersing yourself in the surrounding environment. You must reach a state where you dissolve into those around you.

Then, to the extent that you can awaken your own feelings while slightly detaching from the surrounding group, you will be able to position yourself in a way where you not only dissolve into them but also desire to inspire them, and thereby will pull them forward.

Accept the Authority of the Creator

236.01A person must take upon himself the burden of the kingdom of heaven on the lowest quality, and say about it that to him, even that state, the lowest that can be, meaning one that is entirely above reason, when he has no support from the mind or the feeling, so he can build its foundations on it, and at that time, he is seemingly standing between heaven and earth and has no support, for then everything is above reason, then a person says that the Creator sent him this state, where he is in utter lowliness, since the Creator wants him to take upon himself the burden of the kingdom of heaven in this manner of lowliness.

At that time, because he believes above reason, he takes upon himself that the situation he is in now comes to him from the Creator, meaning that the Creator wants him to see the lowest possible state that can be in the world.

And yet, he must say that he believes in the Creator in all manners. This is considered that he has made an unconditional surrender (Rabash, Assorted Notes, 21 “Sanctification of the Month”).

When we perceive that something seemingly bad comes from the Creator and believe it, it becomes easier for us, at least, to identify the source of our negative feelings: it comes from the Creator, who has some intention, goal, or path. Even though we feel our states as bad, we justify them, acknowledging that they, too, are necessary because they originate from Him.

However, this is not enough. We must reach a state where, even in the worst circumstances coming from the Creator, we reveal the best possible state, which is good and beneficial.

On the Contrast Between Darkness and Light

130When one works in order to bestow, he does not mind what he feels during the work. Rather, even in a state where he sees a shape of black, he is not impressed by it, but he only wants the Creator to give him strength to be able to overcome all the obstacles.

It means that he does not ask the Creator to give him a shape of white, but to give him the strength to overcome all the concealments.

Hence, those people who want to work in order to bestow, if there is always a state of whiteness, the whiteness does not allow one to continue in the work.

This is because, while it shines, one is able to work even in the form of reception for oneself. Hence, one will never be able to know if his work is in purity or not, and this causes him never to be able to be awarded Dvekut [adhesion] with the Creator.

[After all, he lacks a clear understanding of the state he is in.]

For this reason, he is given from above a form of blackness, and then he sees if his work is in purity. This means that if one can be in gladness in a state of blackness, too, it is a sign that his work is in purity, since one must be glad and believe that from above he was given an opportunity to be able to work in order to bestow (Baal HaSulam, Shamati, 42, “What Is the Acronym Elul in the Work?”).

There is none else besides the Creator. The Creator sends us both positive and negative influences, darkness and light. This may be darkness and light in feelings or it may be darkness and light in knowledge and understanding. In either case, we must understand that we work on the contrast between darkness and light, the positive and the negative. Therefore, it is essential for us to understand these two states and exist within them.

That is, I must develop an attitude within myself toward darkness and light, understanding and confusion, good and bad feelings in people, in myself, and in the circumstances, regardless of what and how that allows me to go in the middle line.

In essence, it does not matter what I feel; what matters is that I am directed toward the Creator, for all feelings come from Him. The most important thing is that if I strive toward Him above these feelings, I fulfill my purpose correctly.

The meaning of my actions is to perceive everything as coming from the Creator and as necessary for my spiritual development.
