From The Last Exile To The Last Redemption

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus” 20:1 – 20:5: And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, and to the children of Israel, you shall say: Any man of the children of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among Israel, who gives any of his offspring to Molech, shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall pelt him with stones. And I will set My attention upon that man, and I will cut him off from amidst his people, because he gave of his offspring to Molech in order to defile My holy ones and to profane My holy Name. But if the people of the land ignore that man when he gives of his offspring to Molech, not putting him to death. I will set My attention upon that man, and upon his family, and I will cut him off, and all who stray after him to stray after Molech, from amidst their people.

A son is our next state. “…who gives any of his offspring to Molech,” means giving it to the ego, which means to allow my next states to develop in the egoistic direction.

Therefore, the prohibition of giving one’s offspring to Molech means that in the current state, you have to prepare your next state so as to focus yourself absolutely clearly and guaranteed to be in the right direction. But if you are wrong and your next level falls into the ego, it is your problem and not the problem of your offspring, of the next state.

Thus, all the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the previous level that prepared itself incorrectly for the ascent, which means that the father is responsible and not the son. When a person is born, he is nothing. What you fill him with—the plans, attributes, qualities, and values—is what he will be.

It says that if people are forgiving with regard to a person who had given his offspring to Molech, the Creator would cut him off and all that go astray after him. This means that if most people believe that in their next states it is preferable to descend into our world, it will be necessary to raise all the desires anew and to correct them. This is very serious work with heavy losses.

This has previously happened in our history and now we are actually in the same state of having fallen from the spiritual path, which is called “giving your offspring to Molech,” and should rise from this fall once again, which means to rise from the last exile to the last redemption.

Thou Shalt Rise Up Before The Hoary Head

laitman_761_2The Torah, “Leviticus” 19:32: You shall rise before a venerable person and you shall respect the elderly, and you shall fear your God. I am the Lord.

The wisdom of Kabbalah regards everything that happens as a system of forces that manage the egoistic desires: the still, vegetative, animate, and human nature and the whole world, the whole universe.

If we present this schematically, we see a system that is made of 125 levels in which every internal, egoistic desire gradually must become altruistic. Then, a person will see the whole world in an opposite manner, and instead of our world, he will feel that he is in the upper world. The egoistic matter will become anti-matter.

Today, even physicists say that the black matter that we don’t feel is greater in strength and takes up greater space than all of the matter that we can see and feel in our egoistic senses.

When we ascend the levels of the spiritual ladder, every new level is always more altruistic, more corrected, and more illuminated than the previous level.

Every Partzuf—which means every structure of the soul—acquires the form of a human body. The white Light makes the hair on the head lighter, and it is as if it is covered with snow like Mt. Hermon, which embodies the head of the spiritual Partzuf.

Such a state is called greatness or standing, as a person must stand before the hoary head that is revealed to him from above in order to attain it. Therefore, the commandment of, “Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man,” has nothing to do with the morality of our world but refers to a spiritual correction.

In order to reach a state of “a hoary head,” which means to rise to the next level where everything is based on absolute bestowal, we must be in our greatest state, having corrected our lowest egoistic desires; while a state of smallness or sitting is characterized by the fact that we correct only the upper part of our desires, the weakest ones.

Question: Why is it that every law ends with the words, “I am the Lord?”

Answer: Because a person cannot justify these laws in our world. It is only if you aspire to the Creator in order to attain the upper force and want to resemble it that these laws are for you. These are laws of your movement toward adhering to Him.

Otherwise, there is no point in observing them. On the contrary, if you observe them in order to have a good life, you are drawing away from Him.

Old Age Is A Garment For Wisdom

When Poison Turns Into Nectar

laitman_571_06Question: It says: “and honor the face of the old man, and thou shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord.” What does that mean?

Answer: Honor is the state in which you adhere to the upper level by wanting to receive everything that you can from it, thus allowing it to operate and bestow unto you. This is how honor is expressed.

Comment: Suppose I pay someone a visit and the kind host serves me refreshments and says: “if you honor me eat a bit more.” And I eat out of my respect for him even if I am full.

Answer: This doesn’t happen in the spiritual world. There we see an accurate correlation between what the lower lacks and what the upper has. The upper offers you what you lack and you have to prepare yourself for the meal by eating only for the sake of the host. Although these flavors fill you, it is actually above them that you should establish your attitude to the host because you do it only for him and not for your own pleasure.

But this is a problem that you have to solve gradually. First you must find out if this is the custom. Suppose I have some coffee now and I feel good and I thank the host and try to ascend above the flavor of the coffee so as not to enjoy it but only the action of bestowal.

If, for example, I was served gasoline instead of coffee, what should I do about it? Would I drink it and enjoy the fact that I delight the host? This is a problem.  What I receive, what the host gives me, does matter; I respect him and believe that I should give him everything, but I fulfill it above what I find pleasant or unpleasant.

What should I do so that it wouldn’t matter to me at all? The main thing is that I can respect the host, no matter what he gives me, even if it is poison. Then the poison becomes nectar for me because I only respect the host and agree to everything as long as I can delight him. Therefore everything depends on our thoughts.

We can totally detach ourselves and not feel the taste at all, I remember asking my teacher Rabash once why is it that when I begin to eat with the intention of not for myself but in order to bestow the taste suddenly disappears. There can be a great dish before me and I can be very hungry and really want to eat but when I restrict myself internally and focus myself on the intention of in order to bestow, I don’t feel the taste of the food anymore. Later he began to treat me differently seeing it as first signs of my serious work on myself.

In this case, it isn’t only the flavor that disappears, but you can actually drink a whole glass of poison and it will be like the remedy of life for you, carrying a blessing.

On The Golden Path To The Spiritual Ascent

Laitman_041_01The Torah, “Leviticus,” 19:35: You shall not commit a perversion of justice with measures, weights, or liquid measures.

The Torah leads a person to the goal and so everything that he does is only in order to advance a bit further along that path. The incorrect balance of the right and left lines is called “unrighteousness.” The balance is measured  “weights or measures,”which means by the internal human attributes and by the external relations between people. Therefore, you should always follow the middle line along the golden path, by connecting the right and left lines correctly.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 19:36 – 19:37: You shall have true scales, true weights, a true ephah, and a true hin. I am the Lord, your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt. You shall observe all My statutes and all My ordinances, and fulfill them. I am the Lord.

In order to turn the negative egoistic force to a positive force, which means to dress the force of the left (the egoistic force) to the right (altruistic) force so that they will operate together, we should balance them accurately. This means that to the extent that you have altruism, the attribute of love and bestowal, in your right hand, you can use the ego in order to attach it to the attribute of bestowal. This collective action creates the middle line that determines and serves as the connection of the two lines.

The more you advance towards connection, love, and bestowal, the more the Creator reveals the ego in you so that you will have something to balance. Therefore, the ego of everyone who ascends grows even more. This is totally in contrast to the rationality of our world: We believe that if we are corrected, we become better.

In the spiritual world a person advances along two lines by stabilizing the middle line by the two and constantly becomes better along the right line and worse along the left line. He constantly switches from one line to the other and is thus once wonderful and once terrible, and it is all so that he will learn to work in the right connection of the two attributes.

It says, “true scales, true weights, a true ephah, and a true hin.” True refers to the middle line, which means to the correct combination of the two attributes.

Comment: In our world a true person who is loyal and reliable is said to be “a nice person who is not an egoist and who is constantly in bestowal and always thinking about others!”

Answer: Such a person is simply not developed enough and is naïve like a little child. He hasn’t gathered and hasn’t brought out everything that is in him yet.

People who follow the spiritual path absorb the whole universal ego. They discover an enormous egoistic potential inside them, but it is kept under the dome of the Masach (screen) and this is the reason that their spiritual potential is also immense. It is because all the powers of the ego are focused on bestowal in the spiritual direction.

Therefore, it is very difficult to ascend the spiritual levels. The ego constantly pulls downward while you have to pull yourself upward. Thus, is it is said that everything in you should be accurately measured.

Question: Can the states that Kabbalists go through be seen by the naked eye?

Answer: Kabbalists present spiritual and corporeal states, which are therefore not evident to an ordinary person. I know what a great range of states my teacher Rabash used to go through in the duration of a day, but an ordinary person wouldn’t understand it.

Question: What did you feel about it? How is it possible not to forget that although you feel a person in all his revelations he is your great teacher?

Answer: These are the two sides of the same coin: an attitude towards the body and an attitude towards the spirit. I could easily distinguish between the two since the body is a physical state and I know how to handle it since I know something about medicine and have grown up in a family of doctors, but as to the spirit, I tried not to interfere.

Don’t Turn To Medicine Men

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: The Torah says, “Don’t turn to medicine men.” Why is this forbidden?

Answer: In principle, a person should turn only to the Upper Light for help; not to wait for help from below, but to look above. This is the problem. We usually run to doctors and look for something in order to make our situation easier.

Of course, this is not excluded. The Torah tells that it is impossible to manage without it, but only to the extent that it is necessary within the framework of the accepted direction of the society. All other efforts need to be directed to the Creator, the source of the problems.

Question: In the Torah it says that if you get sick, then go to a doctor. You said that your teacher would first go to one doctor, then to another doctors, and only afterward would begin with the treatment. Why?

Answer: You need to hear the opinion of both doctors and then choose one of them. Of course, they need to be respected and serious. And if both of them don’t agree, then go to a third, since from the first two you learn what the third should be. The choice is in your hands. Don’t trust blindly!

In this way, it is forbidden to trust the medicine men. Medicine men are those who don’t turn to the Creator but to all kinds of healing methods with the help of all kinds of spells and other such technology, which are not able to correct the person himself.

However, you can attain peace, tranquility, and good health without correcting yourself, but instead through some kind of alternative means. Thus, with people like alternative health practitioners, one must be very careful.  Without knowing it, they make our path even longer and increase sufferings. We must try to avoid experiences with them.

Very regretfully, a person gets used to acting as the others act in his surroundings and there is nothing to be done about this since a person must live within society. As it is said, “I am found within my people.”

Purifying Our Desires

laitman_560The Torah, “Leviticus” (Metzora), 14:1 – 14:4: And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying: This shall be the ritual for a leper at the time that he is to be cleansed.

When it was been reported to the priest, the priest shall go outside the camp. If the priest sees that the leper has been healed of his scaly affection, the priest shall order two live clean birds, cedar wood, crimson stuff, and hyssop to be brought for him who is to be cleansed.

Question: After Moses brings his people to the Creator, every chapter begins with the words “and the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying.” Why is that so?

Answer: It is because the level of Moses is an intermediate level through which every person discovers the Creator. This is the only way he can reach a connection with the upper force, with the Creator (Keter), that is dressed in the attribute of Moses, which is the complete attribute of Bina, complete bestowal. After the level of bestowal there is the next more sublime level that is love.

Question: It says that the leper (tzara’ath) was brought to the priest. What is the meaning of “the priest shall go outside the camp?”

Answer: A priest and Moses are the same level that has sublevels. Moses is the uppermost attribute in Bina.

When a person rises up to the level of a Cohen, priest, (Bina) he has to examine all his desires, intentions, and goals and check to see if after the days of purification he left any leprosy (flaws).

A flaw is a desire or a thought that operates for its own self. The moment such a thought is revealed, it indicates that a person isn’t pure yet. Therefore, there should be seven additional days of correction. If we don’t discover a flaw a person is considered pure, which means that he is actually on the level of Bina, in the attribute of bestowal, but has not fulfilled it yet!

How can he prepare himself for its fulfillment? He has to take all his desires and not simply restrict them of the egoistic filling, but act against the intention for himself that he had before. He is supposed to focus his intention on the benefit of others.

The beginning of the fulfillment of the desire for the sake of others is called “Eid,” a sacrifice, stemming from the Hebrew word “approximation.”

Usually a certain desire from the states of the still, vegetative, animate, and human nature are used for the correction. The Torah tells us about it allegorically and explains that “two live clean birds, cedar wood, crimson stuff, and hyssop to be brought for him who is to be cleansed.” The birds are the desire on the animate level in a person, the cedar strip and crimson are the desires on the level of the vegetative.

These are special internal attributes that exist in our world in their corporeal form and are therefore not described in the language of the roots but in the language of the branches of our world.

However, when Kabbalists read the Torah they understand which desires and intentions are referred to and what a person can use to start working for the sake of the society and through it for the sake of the upper force, for the Creator.

Society and the Creator are actually the same, but working for the society is working for someone that I can see and feel. When I do so, I discover a level that is totally different from everything else in which I simply work in order to bestow, not even for someone or something but externally to myself, for the Creator.

I begin to discover a totally new attribute of the spiritual world, which surrounds me and I am inside it.

Question: In other words, it is about an evident phase, like when I see you, for example, and want to fill you.

Answer: No. If you want to fill me, you have to first find out what I want. You have to be incorporated in my desires and begin to create something by which you will be able to fill me. When you fill me, you will feel the upper force in this action.

At the same time, you don’t need my response, not in the form of a smile or a kind word, since if there is a response it is already an egoistic filling. I don’t even have to know about it.

This is the work of a Kabbalist that no one knows about. Therefore, the wisdom of Kabbalah is called the concealed wisdom. The actual action of the Kabbalist is not expressed physically but in feelings, in improving the situation and the atmosphere in the world, in people getting closer to one another, etc.

Burning The Bridges Behind Me

Laitman_514_04The Torah, “Leviticus” (Kedoshim), 19:31: You shall not turn to [the sorcery of] Ov or Yid’oni; you shall not seek [these and thereby] defile yourselves through them. I am the Lord your God.

You mustn’t turn back and draw the past towards you. You must actually burn the past behind you so that there would be no way of making one step backward, because there is a steep slope behind you. You should only move forward.

“The ghosts” refer to your previous dead desires and not to biological bodies that passed away. The Torah only speaks about desires that undergo changes from egoistic desires to altruistic desires. Therefore “turn ye not unto the ghosts” means that you shouldn’t turn to desires that have already been processed. You shouldn’t try to return to the previous pleasures that your desires brought you.

You shouldn’t feel sorry for the best times that are gone when you felt so good while now you feel bad. The only inclination should be forward! Even the current state is always better than the previous one, although in the meantime it may be felt as unpleasant.

A person who ascends the spiritual ladder very often has serious regrets. He begins to torture himself asking himself why he did something, to whom, how and for what reason. We should be very careful of such questions.

We must attribute everything to the Creator. He is the only one who evokes these states in you by managing you, and they are all necessary. You can correct each of them in your feeling only by yearning for Him. Therefore, you must first stabilize everything in you so that at a specific moment, in a specific case, you will attain the best possible state.

If this doesn’t happen, it means that the desires that you feel are not corrected, because if your desires are corrected, you should feel complete rest. Everything is locked on every point on the line we advance along in a very concrete manner.

Question: I am the moderator of the TV program called “The Point in the Heart” in which friends tell about their lives. Some say: “Thanks to the fact that I study Kabbalah, I suddenly realize how badly I have treated my wife and my relatives.”

Answer: This is the past and we shouldn’t think about the past. Memories actually bury a person in the ground and kill him. He begins to live the past. The main point is that he believes that he is the one who did everything that happened, whereas it is the Creator who did everything.

A person’s job is not to delve into such states but to accept them as good and perfect! You should look for what you do in order to somehow correct what belongs to you and how to correct yourself. This is where a person’s clarification with regard to his environment begins.

Question: Do you believe that a person can understand where this stems from?

Answer: It depends on the environment. Such an attitude towards what is happening should float in the air. Then a person will not be able to forget that everything comes from the Creator and will be constantly focused on Him.

About Loyalty And Unfaithfulness In The Spiritual World

laitman_293The Torah, “Leviticus” (Kedoshim), 19:29: You shall not defile your daughter by making her a harlot, lest the Land fall into Harlotry and the land be filled with immorality.

Question: On the one hand, it says: “shall not defile your daughter,” and then it says: “lest the land fall into Harlotry.” What is the connection between the daughter and the land?

Answer: A person gives birth to the male and the female desire of the next level. Therefore, their work should be arranged so that they will be able to become the basis of the next upper level. The term “land” refers to a homeland, (earth, desire) which is a desire that shouldn’t be profaned or impure.

The female inclination (desire) is considered the basis of every level: it gives birth, brings up the offspring, and formats the next level. Therefore the desire should be guarded, “shall not defile your daughter by making her a harlot.”

Every level usually simultaneously produces the male and the female inclinations, but the Torah only speaks about giving birth to sons since the reference to a son always included the birth of a daughter. There cannot be one without the other according to spiritual laws: nine Sefirot and the tenth Sefira, which is Malchut (the female inclination).

Question: What does it mean to make your next level a harlot?

Answer: To make it a harlot refers to receiving for myself. There are only two states: you either work for the external ego of others according to the rule of “love thy friend as thyself” regardless of the fact that they may be egoists or not. When you fill them you correct yourself. At the same time when they receive the Light through you, they are also corrected by it.

On the other hand, if you don’t do that, then the earth, which means the general desire, becomes filled with prostitution, with receiving for myself.

Question: Is there a difference between a male or a female “making… a harlot?”

Answer: A female “making … a harlot” is much stronger than the male since the male is one phase while the female produces from the next generating levels because they immediately spread and multiply (procreate).

Comment: In our world a man takes his being unfaithful lightly, while for a woman it is considered a very deep state.

Answer: This happens because the tenth Sefira belongs to the first nine Sefirot. The male part (the first nine Sefirot) looks for the suitable Malchut and can have many, even a thousand.

If we speak about the power of the radiation energy, that which comes from a man can fill thousands of people. In order to receive this energy, a woman has to be like Malchut for Zeir Anpin to him, which means to belong to him. Therefore, the attribute of the female part should adhere to him and be loyal; it should be faithful to him.

If this attribute doesn’t exist in order to connect to Zeir Anpin, the next generations would not be born correctly. All the laws in our world stem from the physical laws of the spiritual world and are actually their replica, their reflection.

Comment: Even in our world, a baby that is born as a result of an affair is called a bastard…

Answer: It is a very difficult state since from the perspective of the spiritual connection, a bastard child is a person with a defected soul. He is not connected to the right general system and is considered waste, garbage, the slag of society. Therefore he is disparaged by society.

In our day, however, it is one thing in human society, whereas in the spiritual world it requires a very big correction, if it can be corrected at all, in order to bring him back into the general system to be equal to others.

Discovering The Force Of Love

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How do our efforts along our spiritual development match the plan of creation?

Answer: Without  asking our permission, this plan helps us advance by the forces of nature, just like the levels of the still, vegetative, and animate.

But on the other hand, we were given the Torah, the wisdom of Kabbalah, and we understand this process and know which phases and which states await us. Each of them is the essence of the revelation of the evil in human nature. It will eventually be revealed, but the question is how?

If it is revealed without my preparation, I become worse compared to everyone, and the same goes for everyone else.

But if I use the wisdom of Kabbalah and listen to and accept the help of the teachers, sages, and great Kabbalists who continue to teach us, I discover evil in a different manner.

I know that the evil will now rise up, and with the others, I prepare and focus myself for that in advance, so that the hatred will not erupt and be set free. It is boiling, but we are in control and we know why and for what purpose this is happening. We work on ourselves in order to restrain it.

Then the inevitable revelation of evil takes place in a different manner, and in contrast to it, we discover the force of love. It is written that “love will cover all the sins.”  Thus we correct all the evil within us in a good and positive manner.

This is possible if we understand what is happening and that each side keeps himself from falling into hatred. But in order to do that, we have to unite the nation, strengthen the good mutual connection between people, listen to the sages, and be well organized.

The Correction Of The Sabbath

Laitman_633_4Torah, “Leviticus” (Kedoshim), 19:30: Ye shall observe My sabbaths and revere My sanctuary. I am the Lord.

The Sabbath is the private end of correction on every level. Every level undergoes a correction during six days, six sub-levels (Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, Yesod), and then all the attainments are summed up to a general level that is called Sabbath.

The sum of the levels, the combination between them, and the correct mutual connection between them are done under the influence of the Upper Light. A person cannot express himself in any way by correcting and collecting these states. It is not in our power. We only perform private corrections by preparing them for unity, and the Upper Light connects everything.

It turns out that a person doesn’t work on the seventh level. This state is called Sabbath, which means rest, a sabbatical (complete rest), which appears when you are not involved in the last process that sums up the six levels. Therefore, the Sabbath symbolizes holiness.

As a result of the Upper Light, the end of the correction of all the levels and the sum of all the Sabbaths into one single Sabbath, the whole world reaches one unique state of complete rest. There is nothing else to correct. There is nothing else to discover, to clarify, or to connect. An absolutely final outline of the soul is created, which is called the last Sabbath of the world.

Therefore, if you spiritually observe every private Sabbath correctly, you get the feeling of the perfect ultimate state. However, this refers only to those who have spiritual attributes.

Question: Sometimes, religious people say that, if all the Jews observed the Sabbath all the time, there would be a feeling of the end of correction, of the last Sabbath.

Answer: Even twice is enough. If we repeated that state at least two consecutive times, we would transcend two levels higher from the previous uncorrected state. On the third level, it is already the end of correction since the general request rises to the upper and then to the uppermost, and then everyone enters the world of Ein Sof (Infinity).

In our world, the Sabbath symbolizes the end of the week, but we should understand that the term “Sabbath” refers to a certain correction of a person during six levels, and not days. Each of these levels can last for many months and even years, and it also can last for a couple of moments.

It is only when we gradually go through all the six levels—by collecting all our desires by which we tried to perform spiritual actions of disseminating the attributes of love and bestowal to the one force outwardly—do we attain the state of Sabbath.

However, it isn’t the pleasure from resting, but very serious work that doesn’t end in the actions of correction, but in collecting all the corrected parts into one unique whole. The Light does that, but we need to clarify in advance, to merge, to place, to show everything, and to raise this state to the Upper Light.

Therefore, the work on the Sabbath isn’t the clarification of the lack of correction, but working on wholeness. Everything that we do during the week accumulates into the right formation on Sabbath. This work is called the corrections of the Sabbath.
