Avoid Improper Contacts

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:17: And a man who takes his sister, whether his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and he sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgraceful act, and they shall be cut off before the eyes of the members of their people; he uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he shall bear his sin.

Question: What does it mean to see the nakedness of one’s mother and sister?

Answer: It means that no Light of Hassadim is without clothing, and it cannot in any way communicate with her. In spiritual world communications, i.e., contacts between all the desires and intentions, must pass through the Light of Hassadim through the property of bestowal.

If he takes these garments off, this is the action of reception. Nudity is allowed only between a husband and a wife because they are one body and one desire. Even between them there are limitations.

There are many conditions that limit the use of a desire because you cannot come into contact with the upper Light with all of the desire until complete correction.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:18: And a man who lies with a woman who has a flow, and he uncovers her nakedness he has bared her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from the midst of their people.

Comment: We are talking about a ban upon a contact that may not result in the birth of a new degree.

You cannot enter into an intimate relationship with a woman during her monthly bleeding. In our world menstruation prevents full intercourse leading to pregnancy. Since in this case the birth of a new degree is eliminated, it is forbidden to make the contact with a woman.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:19: And you shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister or your father’s sister, for he would be baring his close relative; they shall bear their sin.

Comment: There can be no next of kin of the father and mother while being in contact with the highest degree. You are shorted only for your father and your mother, or for others, starting with the second line of kinship. And as far as the cousins are considered to be your consanguineous bond, neither can you enter into a contact with them.

Cut Off The Edge Of Your Heart

Laitman_509The Torah, “Leviticus,” 12:3: And on the eighth day, the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

On the eighth day, the son, the new level that was born out of the seven Sefirot, totally detaches from the mother. But in order to exist in the future, he cannot use the flesh of his foreskin, his greatest and most egoistic desires.

He has to resist them and not allow himself to use them, as it says: “cut off the edge of your heart,”i.e., desires, because we can only use our most egoistic desires after the end of correction.

First all of humanity undergoes correction by including only the desires of Keter, Hochma, Bina, Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, and Hod. And Yesod, the last Sefira of the Lights that descend from Above through which the Light enters Malchut (the created being) has to be cut off, to be restricted.

This means that we also use the Sefira of Yesod but it is restricted so that it will not convey all the Light in it to Malchut. This is important!

In addition, circumcision symbolizes the connection between all the Sefirot and Malchut that is fulfilled through Yesod. This is the reason that it is called a covenant (in Hebrew). This connection cannot exist without the circumcision of Yesod, without the restriction of its dominance over Malchut.

The term circumcision refers to the fact that we remove the greatest desires, the heart of stone (Lev HaEven) that cannot be corrected into love and bestowal. However, all the other desires can be used. Therefore it is actually after the circumcision that a person is considered Jewish (Yehudi) stemming from the Hebrew word “Yihud” (unity, connection) since now he can connect with the Creator.

Question: Why is the flesh of the foreskin thrown to the sand?

Answer: It is because you cannot use it; it is equal to corporeal dust.

The flesh of the foreskin symbolizes the greatest, cruelest egoistic desires that you cannot use in order to bestow, but at the same time, these desires are very valuable and so although they burn in you, you now equate their value to dust.

Question: Will there be a time when we will not have to circumcise the newborn?

Answer: At the end of correction! Then there will be no more prohibitions, no commandments, because all the commandments are partial corrections of the attribute of love and bestowal. If you correct everything, there will be no limitations left in any of the desires! You will begin to use them freely since you will have the intention of in order to bestow on top of every desire.

Nature’s Self-Cleaning

Laitman_703_04Question: When will our world become ecologically clean?

Answer: It is only according to our inner correction. During this process the world will undergo different changes and will become cleaner externally according to our inner purity.

The world cannot be better than we are internally. Therefore the more we develop, the more our ego grows, the more we waste. Look around you! I am sure that the moment we begin to clean ourselves nature will begin its self-cleaning.

Question: Do you believe in self-cleaning?

Answer: I don’t believe, I know it is so. Our internal change leads us to use nature only as much as necessary, in a rational manner, and it will gradually restore itself to its pristine condition.

We will convey the power of the Upper Light through us (through the human level – Adam) to the levels of the animate, vegetative, and still nature, and they will all be corrected and ascend all the way to the level of absolute wholeness. Our forefathers didn’t know that because they always acted egoistically, and now we especially don’t understand what it is.

So before this world disappears from our sensations, we have to bring it to its perfect state by experiencing the current descent and start to ascend up the parabola. Accordingly, the still, vegetative, and animate nature, which totally depend on us without any account of themselves, will be cleansed and will ascend.

We can only imagine it as “and a lion will lie down with a kid and a small child will lead them.” Although this is said as an allegory, it will really be so, which means that the global nature will change according to human nature.

This Is How The Soul Works

laitman_281_01The Torah, “Leviticus,” 12:2, 12:4: Speak to the children of Israel, saying: If a woman conceives and gives birth to a male, she shall be unclean for seven days; as [in] the days of her menstrual flow, she shall be unclean. And for thirty three days she shall remain in the blood of purity; she shall touch not touch anything holy, nor may she enter the Sanctuary, until the days of her purification have been completed.

What is the meaning of purification? It is the scrutiny of our desires and our intentions and then the recognition of evil in them and the clarification of the right way of using them.

Then they are classified, picked out, and desires that cannot be used are kept away. But they remain inside, and so we have to place certain barriers to block them, to limit them in certain frameworks. All this is fulfilled in a period of 33 days.

Where does all that stem from? There are seven Sefirot in each Sefira Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, and Netzach, which add up to 28 and 5 other Sefirot in Hod (Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod) which total 33. This is identical to the counting of the Omer (33 of the Omer).

This means that 33 days (33 levels) have to go by in order to make sure that all the upper sources are corrected. The others don’t need to be corrected since they will be corrected by themselves.

The Torah, “Leviticus,” 12:5: “And if she gives birth to a female, she shall be unclean for two weeks, like her menstruation. And for sixty six days, she shall remain in the blood of purity.”

A female symbolizes the work on two systems: both the attribute of bestowal and the attribute of receiving. This is the reason that everything is doubled.

A male is the attribute of bestowal and a female is the attribute of receiving in order to bestow. Therefore, it is about a double system. Everything is very simple; it is pure physics. This is how the soul works.

The Light Attenuation System

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:12: And a man who lies with his daughter in law both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed a depravity; their blood is upon themselves.

“Lies with his daughter in law” means the incorrect connection between the lower and the higher level of the spiritual system.

The lower level can directly contact only with a father and a mother because it has a common direct connection with them. All other communications are considered secondary.

If the lower degree comes into a wrong contact with a higher degree, it results in a short circuit. The lower degree can receive light from the higher degree, only through certain filters, the so-called gradation Tselem (Tzadik, Lamed, Mem),  i.e., the image and likeness. As it is written, “By His own image I created a man.”

The spiritual system is designed so that the Creator comes first, second is His image and likeness, and then the degree of a man. Therefore, the image and likeness are filters, the system of gradual reduction of an impact towards a person to the point where one becomes something similar to the Creator but still remains at a lower level than the Creator.

This is a light attenuation system of filters, which are divided into many categories, such as, the quality of light, its amount on the left and right lines, etc. While explaining this system, Baal HaSulam gives an example of a person who can look at the sun only through special sunglasses.

From One Level To The Next

laitman_232_04Question: The name of the weekly section in the Torah called “Ki Tazria” can be translated as: to sow, to plant, to conceive, to give birth. Does that mean that it refers to different things?

Answer: No. It is about the same actions but on different levels: vegetative, animate, and spiritual.

It order to give birth to something, we must first collect something; to clarify and purify different things that we don’t need and that can only harm and become an interruption. We have to sort them out and to understand what needs to be separated and what we don’t need. Only then is a new state born. Here we are given the instructions how to do so.

If the previous section tells us about the vegetative level and how to plant, raise, and reap the crops, now it is about the same thing but in a person, in a mother. The birth of every body and its development take place according to the same rules but on a different level each time. First, it is on the level of the corporeal body and then the same thing happens on a moral level, on the level of recognition, the level of consciousness, etc.

Additional Changes

laitman_557The Torah, “Leviticus,” 12:6 – 12:7: And when the days of her purification have been completed whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring a sheep in its first year as a burnt offering, and a young dove or a turtle dove as a sin offering, to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, to the Cohen.

And he shall offer it up before the Lord and effect atonement for her, and thus, she will be purified from the source of her blood. This is the law of a woman who gives birth to a male or a female.

Offering a sacrifice means to get closer to the Creator, when I can correct myself by taking additional desires and receiving the Light of correction unto them. In other words, I take a sacrifice in my desires and sacrifice them to the Creator to be used in order to bestow.

Now after the birth of my new spiritual figure in the form of a man, I have to identify these additional desires inside me from the lower animate level. It is because a person is born from a corporeal body that still has these attributes (a lamb for a burnt offering and a young dove or a turtle dove, etc.), which can be corrected in order to bestow.

These are additional corrections, that is, I corrected myself on the human level and was born on the next level, and what is left are different desires on the levels of the still, vegetative, and animate nature are offered to the priest (Cohen).

The Cohen is the highest level of correction in man in which he raises inside him desires of the animate level (a lamb, a young dove or a turtle dove) and corrects them; first he kills their animate life and then he raises them to the level of human use but in a revised form.

Here there are already the laws of the Kashrut: how to slaughter and to process the animals and in what and who is allowed to eat them, during what hours, etc. But all these are spiritual categories, not corporeal ones.

“And she will be purified from the source of her blood” means that the descent of the desires that cannot be corrected will stop. Blood is the lowest, most impure desire! Blood (Dam) comes from the word “Domem” (inanimate level). It is impossible to correct this desire. We should wait only for the source of blood to stop and begin the correction of the next level.

laitman_552_02The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:11: And a man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon themselves.

This speaks about the higher degree versus the lower degree.

There is a special combinatorics between a father and a mother that is, among all the men who are at the highest level next to the father, and all women who are at the same level next to the mother. There is only one type of communication here: father, mother, and me. I will not be able to go up to the next level in any other way.

I cannot be in contact with either the left (female) or the right (male) part of the higher degree if they do not correlate to me. In this case, between the higher degree and mine there will be no regular communication, and without it the Light will not work.

Therefore, the prohibitions of the Torah are presented categorically, because if I wrongfully use the degree I am at now, although I have achieved it with a great difficulty, I will lose it. Therefore, there is a general rule: “It is preferred to sit and do nothing than to do something wrong.”

Question: In the spiritual world, all communications that do not give rise to the next level are forbidden. What does “forbidden” mean?

Answer: This is a ban for the wrong contact with the higher degree. If you are at the point at which you begin the contact, if you want to climb one degree higher to attain the Creator, every time you attain Him deeper and deeper, such a descent eventually lowers you.

This is similar to a child’s game when by advancing the chip you move towards the finish line and suddenly you are thrown backward.

The Ban On Blasphemy

laitman_546_01The Torah, “Leviticus,” 20:9: For any man who curses his father or mother there be that curseth his father or his mother shall be put to death…

The upper level is called Aba and Ima (Father and Mother). The lower level is its sons and daughters, or ZON.

If the lower level doesn’t respect and honor Aba and Ima, which means that it doesn’t want to ascend and be under the upper level, it cannot grow and thus detaches itself from them as if killing itself.

To respect and honor means to annul yourself before the upper level. This is what the ascent of the lower levels is based on since the state of its first ascent is the state of an embryo. An embryo can already exist in the upper only if it totally annuls itself before the upper. To curse means to assume that the laws according to which the upper level exists are not higher than the laws according to which the lower level exists.

The Relevance Of The Torah In The Modern World

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe section Kedoshim is the main section of the Torah and is translated as “Holiness.” Holiness is the level of Bina, the level of absolute, complete ascent above all egoistic desires. Therefore the right fulfillment of all the laws described within it should bring us to a state of bestowal.

Comment: But the system of prohibitions is examined in this section and tells us what will happen if we sin.

Answer: The prohibitions are not in order to scare us. Fear doesn’t help a person. We are made so that nothing can stop us. Moreover, it isn’t about fear of rulers in this world or fear of being punished by the Creator as considered by religions.

This specifies the option of sin and the punishment. We should understand the whole chain of spiritual actions so as to prevent any movement toward sin and to avoid committing acts that are prohibited. It is by such acts that you detach yourself from the ascent and by which you harm no one but yourself.

The correct understanding of the whole system, meaning the entrance, the exit, the inner part of the system, the way it works, etc., isn’t just a condition but the concealed laws of nature, which we don’t feel. Therefore it says, “Don’t behave that way, don’t do that.”

These are basically internal laws, which means they relate to the the desire, the intention, and the mind and heart. They are explicit and relate to the general system of nature, but they are concealed from us and we cannot see them unless we begin to implement them.

We begin to feel part of the laws of nature from birth by trial and error, just like a baby who finds that some things work while others don’t. He looks at others and repeats their actions, gets stuck on something and cries, which means that he gets used to what is allowed and what is forbidden.

There are laws of mutual relations between people that say, “This is allowed and this is forbidden,” but a person still doesn’t see the hidden meaning within them. Gradually, he begins to understand that he can be punished for some things and in regard to others, he is allowed to continue. He begins to realize that some things are not nice, and here the shame, envy, and the desire for control stop him, which means that different desires guide and direct him.

There are also laws that he doesn’t feel at all, when he doesn’t feel giving or bestowal from the environment and society, and these are also laws of nature! These are the laws that the wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us and this is the reason it is called the concealed part of the Torah.

On the whole, these are the same laws and the same morality, but they are felt on a level that humanity has to reach in order to fulfill. Today we have reached a level that we have to fulfill the laws of general life on this planet, which has become a small, all inclusive area.

We see how borders are nullified and no matter where we go, it is the same mass culture everywhere. People are beginning to realize that everything is collective. If there are any unique local characteristics, they do not stem from the depths of history, but are artificially created in order to attract tourists.

We have changed internally and have become cosmopolitan, living in one common space. We preserve what existed before only in order to profit from it. The unique attribute of our times is a pragmatic approach to everything that once seemed holy and that we considered our legacy.

Now we have to keep the laws of unity, but unfortunately, we don’t feel the actual unity, nor living on one planet like one family totally dependent on one another.

The Torah tells us how all of humanity should attain the correct, cooperative life. Previously very few knew the essence of the Torah, but today its revelation to the world in its true light is required.

Thus, the nation that was given the laws that tell us how to live in unity penetrates the nations of the world like a river and begins to raise them to that level. At the same time, we need to constantly remind people that we did not invent these laws, these conventions and customs, and neither did anyone else. They are simply the laws of nature. Now we have simply arrived at a new level of our development from the still, vegetative, and animate levels to the human level.

Before that we lived and grew like animals, instinctively fulfilling what developed within us. Now, however, and despite our animal level, we should consciously begin to somehow get closer to other people even though we are repulsed by it. This is the human level that is opposite in every way from the animal level. This is the level we are now reaching.

Therefore, the Torah is becoming increasingly more relevant today.
