Question: During the lesson, do we first need to internally connect to the teacher or to the ten, or does it have to happen simultaneously?

Answer: You need to connect to the ten so that you and the ten are one whole, and then you can listen to the teacher and implement in the ten what he says.

The ten is the main thing, but in order to know what to do in the ten, we need a teacher.

If we could go beyond our narrowly focused intention—to do everything only for our own sake (consciously and subconsciously, by any effort, by force, by all means)—we would begin to feel the world not with our five senses, but as if through the senses of someone else.

The perception of the world through other people’s sensory organs gives us a completely different picture—non-egoistic, above the egoistic one, which we call the upper world. After all, to the extent that we begin to exit ourselves, exit our intention for our own sake and integrate into intention not for our own sake, we discover that previously we were serving the force for our own sake and now we are serving the force for the sake of others.

Intention for the sake of others is called Lishma.

When we acquire this intention, we begin to see the world differently, not depending on us, on our existence, on our actions and desires. This world is called the upper world. Why? We begin to see forces, actions that are above us, higher than us, outside of us because they are not limited by our narrow egoism.

This opportunity to act in an absolute form not for our own sake, which is called Lishma, takes us to the degree of eternity, perfection and gives us the opportunity to exist in a different world, in a different space.

Question: Where is the Creator here?

Answer: The Creator is the general force of bestowal and love, which in this case is revealed to a person since he begins to acquire it outside of himself. To this extent, partially, he becomes more and more acquainted with this great field, the great force that surrounds him in a new dimension, in a new world, which is called the Creator.

Comment: In lessons, we mainly study the writings of Baal HaSulam and his oldest son, Rabash. It seems we have apparently constricted the entire chain of great Kabbalists.

My Response: The writings of the rest of the Kabbalists are concentrated in both of them. Therefore, by studying the writings of Baal HaSulam and Rabash, we are not missing anything. First, they are the last and closest to us. Second, they are truly the modern Kabbalists of the twentieth century.

Third, all the previous Kabbalists throughout many generations are somehow gathered and concentrated in the writings of Baal HaSulam and Rabash, and so we have not lost anything.

In their writings, Baal HaSulam and Rabash relied upon the more ancient Kabbalistic sources, such as The Book of Zohar, the Sefer Yetsirah, and so forth. There are also articles that they themselves wrote. It is easier for us to read and study them.

In principle, we have no need for more than this. Also, without going beyond the framework of their writings, we can fully acquire the wisdom of Kabbalah and apply it in a way that is necessary for our correction.

Question:  Baal HaSulam and Rabash are like a lens that concentrates the rays of the sun?

Answer: Yes, Baal HaSulam gathered everything that was before him for us. He explained The Book of Zohar and the writings of Ari. There was no important subject in the wisdom of Kabbalah, the wisdom of managing the world through a system of higher behavior, which he has not clarified.

Baal HaSulam explained everything, he brought the wisdom closer to us and expressed it in a language that is understandable to us. If we do not study his writings, we will actually be incapable of understanding anything in the world, its behavior, and its purpose.

Comment: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why,” said Mark Twain.

My Response: In general, yes. The first day is natural or else there is no one to turn to. And the second day is when a man is born out of you.

Question: And when did you understand why?

Answer: I think it was several years after I came to Rabash. It is not simple.

If we are talking about a conscious understanding of what man was created for—not about what it seems to him, but a clearly defined goal—then this, of course, will take many years. Five or six years.

Question: After you came to your teacher?

Answer: Yes.

Question: What did you understand?

Answer: I understood that I must realize myself absolutely and completely because He is waiting for it.

Question: And did you then realize what would happen today: so many students, so many spectators will listen and turn to you?

Answer: I do not see it now because I do not take it into account. Even if the whole world now gathers, turns on a means of communication and hears our lesson. What else can I tell them beside this? Only the method of bringing people closer to the Creator.

Comment: And it does not even occur to you: “Look, the whole world is listening, I have been working for this for so long! And my teacher wanted it so much!”

Answer: No.

Question: What is your attitude toward those people who listen to you, see you, and want to hear you?

Answer: I wish for their success so much, it makes my heart hurt.  This is important. And to each I would give up my place if it is closer to the Creator than his. Absolutely! I would just give everything right away!

Question: When there were 10 of us, did you feel that so many people would come?

Answer: Yes. But then we set ourselves this task and wanted it to be so.

Today I have no desire for there to be a lot. Today I have a desire more for the quality of our communication. So that all the students would connect with each other into one system and the Creator would begin to reveal more and more in it. And the rest will catch up. Today the work is on the quality of the central group.

Spiritual Understanding in the Family

Question: Did you discuss the relationship between a man and a woman with Rabash and if so what was his opinion?

Answer: No. The only thing I can say is that his wife, on the one hand, understood what he was doing, but on the other hand, she did not engage in it herself.

They were born at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was a completely different time, a different era, a different society.

Comment: But you write in your memoirs about Rabash that he and his wife had a very strong bond.

My Response: Indeed, there was a strong inner bond between them. They both felt each other, although they did not engage in spiritual activities together. This is all a matter for the future. Therefore, I do not advise you to impose such interactions in families now.

Comment: You say that the perspective of the world should be corrected, but when I watch the news I see different things happening in the world which I don’t feel at all.

This worries me a little because I always think about Rabash who used to listen to the news and was very sensitive to everything that happens in the world, and cared deeply about everyone as if they were his own sons. This means that my feelings are nothing like the feelings of Rabash.

My Response: It is not such a bad thing, since you have not reached Rabash’s level yet. It is a good thing that you care, keep caring.

Rabash understood all the problems of the world, how they manifest themselves in him, and it was of course very painful for him. You don’t feel that humanity is like your children, and therefore you are indifferent. “So what if something burns, if someone was murdered, if something happened? Millions of people are killed around the world every day.”

Rabash, on the other hand, felt it as spiritual phenomena, which means that the whole world was in front of him. He could actually see how everything that happened in the world was loaded upon him like a heavy burden.

It seems to us that from a purely egoistic aspect that a Kabbalist floats on clouds like a bird, free of all the corporeal problems, forgetting our world, not caring about anything. No. Everything interests him, because he cares about the general correction of the world.

Question: A certain teaching tradition has developed in Kabbalah based on the fact that there is content, but the form, methods, and commentary on it are determined by the teacher himself. In this case, we are too dependent on his personality.

And there is another approach when forms and methods of the work are clearly prescribed, and the task of the teacher is not to deviate from what is offered to him.

Which is correct: to focus on personal factors of a person or on the approved technology?

Answer: I don’t think you can separate one from the other. But since Kabbalah is an ancient science that has been taking shape over many thousands of years, it is natural that we should attach ourselves to those great personalities who laid down this structure.

Kabbalah has developed several trends that have taken shape over the past 500 years in Western Europe, the Baltic States, and the Middle and Near East. Each of these regions includes different sub-areas. They are described in different sources and there is a lot of material on all the branching directions. This regards explanations from the sources to the consumers.

And if the teacher’s charismatic personality also manifests here, then of course, he can change something, compare and apply it. I do not think that the science of Kabbalah is a rigid science that cannot be changed and somehow adapted to the audience, to the teacher, especially in our time. The main thing is to convey its essence, i.e., the revelation of the Creator to every person in our world. This is the subject of its study.

The Kabbalistic methodology is changing and will continue to change, and we must look at it very pragmatically and not go into inertia.

Question: According to what you say, a teacher has tools that help him withstand feelings that are multiplied by 620 times. How are these tools acquired?

Answer: The point is that spiritual work is carried out in the property of bestowal, not in the attribute of reception. A kind of amplifier appears in you because you begin to feel everything outside yourself and not inside of you.

You yourself become a sensor. Your whole ego, everything that you once absorbed and felt inside changes from an organ of reception to an organ of sensation.

Imagine your whole body becomes eyes, ears, tactile sensation, organs of taste and smell. You begin to feel through them as one single organ everything that happens around you, outside yourself, at infinite distance and infinite planes.

This is what is referred to by the expression that you begin to feel 620 times more. In fact, it is billions and billions times more than what we feel today. But you have the opportunity to feel and not explode from these sensations because you feel it as love from yourself and not inside of you.

Why does Kabbalah tell a person that he must exit himself? Because what you begin to feel, you cannot absorb. It will simply tear you apart because these sensations are billions of times more powerful than the ones we feel and experience now. Our world is generally considered  non-existent relative to the upper world precisely because of the insignificance of its sensations.

So we must first acquire an external sense called faith above reason, the attribute of love and bestowal, and then, once you are in this motion, you will be able to gradually feel the upper world.

Question: Why do we not see any changes in the external behavior of the teacher in states of ascents and descents, while we do see such changes in the friends? How do you manage to be so full of energy all the time, while others are in states of ascents and descents?

Answer: I have already been through the states that you are in. Long ago I attained the recognition that these states are fleeting, and that following the evening comes the night, that after the night comes the morning, and then daytime, and that they are all helpful states.

I have understood that I must lower my head and wait, and that I may even hasten the time of dawn, the spiritual light. This is the reason that I am always in a state in which I can occupy myself by doing something.

There are states in which I must watch a political or social TV program that helps me think so that I can build up the necessary vocabulary and terminology and to understand better what is happening in the world, etc.

Other than that, I write posts on Twitter, I have meetings with the writers, who write articles to the press, several times a week. I participate in filming sessions of programs on a variety of different topics related to the wisdom of Kabbalah, psychology, etc., and I give evening lessons about The Book of Zohar. So, you can see that I work all the time.

I want to share a secret with you: I engage in different parts of the wisdom of Kabbalah according to the state I am in. There is no need, for example, for special sensitivity in order to study “The Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah,” or The Study of the Ten Sefirot. So, when my feelings become numb and I become like a log, I turn to these parts. On the other hand, when my feelings come to life, I engage in studying the articles in Shamati or the articles of Rabash.

Every day I need to prepare for the next day’s lesson. If the lesson begins at three am, I wake up two hours before the lesson, take a hot shower, warm myself up and make sure that I will not fall asleep. I have been living according to this schedule for over forty years, and so I have developed this habit.

I take my work very seriously. Although I know the material, I go over it before the lesson in order to get into the topic, to get into the state in which I can connect with the students, and to be ready for the contact with them, to feel them, so that they will be able to feel me.

At the beginning of every lesson, I introduce the topic to them for ten-fifteen minutes and try to present it to them in a new way. This means that it is highly creative work that requires constant mental effort, so even when I sleep, these thoughts do not leave me, and I experience it all inside me.

The students are the most important thing that I have. I relate to them with great awe. They are the basis of my life.

I think that those who come to the lesson physically or who watch them virtually feel that and advance from one day to the next.

They receive a portion of spiritual knowledge each day, feelings, and a new perspective, etc. What is more, it is not just an event or a phenomenon, but real internal renewal, it is actual work.
