What Is Betrayal?

Laitman_002Question from Facebook: I have been betrayed many times in life. I know what it is, but I still want to ask, what is betrayal?

Answer: I have also often felt a change in attitude toward me that could be called betrayal.

But since I began to study the wisdom of Kabbalah, I have always accepted it as completely natural, without any internal drama, without anger or grumbling, without a desire for revenge, because first of all, that is how human nature is manifested.

Second, this doesn’t reveal the person who betrayed you, but the Creator who is showing you how much your attitude has not been perfect, far from total love, loyalty, and complete interaction with others. So your resentment and grumbling is out of place.

On the contrary, you need to understand that if you want to attain absolute devotion  in your relationships with others, you must ascend in spiritual levels to a state where your ego will be completely subordinated to the law of brotherhood and love. This is a high level but attainable.

Only to the degree that you rise to a level of shared work with a friend, will you be able to trust him as yourself.

And there is no place for betrayal there because during an ascent you enter into an area where you are protected by the Upper Light. A higher energy illuminates you so that you are not able to carry out anything improper because you are under its influence.

“If I Am Not For Myself, Who Is For Me?”

Laitman_632_1Question from Facebook: What is the meaning of “If I am not for myself, who is for me”? This contradicts what you always say: “There is none else besides Him.”

Answer: If we think about this, it is indeed true that if I am not for myself, who will help me. A person needs to care for himself to the degree that he has to in order to exist and to function normally.

And all the rest, for the sake of others. But it is only after I provide myself with the basic necessities because “if there is no flour, there is no Torah.”

Question: Where does the most important principle “there is none else besides Him” fit in this equation?

Answer: According to this principle, we should act as follows: I have to think only about myself to the degree that I take care of my basic necessities and not more than that, and I should give everything else (above the basic necessities) to others because this is what the upper leadership obliges me to do.

After all, there is none else besides Him besides the upper governance, which we are subordinate to and should fulfill all its conditions in order to properly exist.

By Reading The Book Of Zohar, We Change Destiny

laitman_265Question: Can we change our destiny by reading The Book of Zohar?

Answer: The Book of Zohar carries a powerful Light on condition that a person knows how to study The Book properly, how to awaken and attract it so that it influences him.

Study must be in a group so that one aims oneself in a particular way toward the illumination that is hidden in The Book of Zohar. It is not possible to arouse and attract it in any other way. This Light influences us, raises us, and changes our destiny.

Everything Is Vanity Of Vanities

laitman_608_02Question from Facebook: What does the expression “vanity of vanities,” from Ecclesiastes by King Solomon, mean?

Answer: “Vanity of vanities” is a mistranslation from the Hebrew expression “Hevel Hevelim,” proving once again that it is impossible to read the Torah in translation.

In fact, Hevel a-peh is actually a breath, an exhalation of air, which passing through the five parts of the mouth—namely, the vocal cords, palate, lips, cheeks, and tongue—is processed and expressed as five kinds of sounds: dental, palatal, guttural, lingual, and labial. That is why it is said: “the word of God created everything.”

In the wisdom of Kabbalah, Hevel means Ohr Hozer (Returning Light). This is great rule of the emission of Light when a person does not want to receive Light within his egoism, but wants only to resemble the Creator, he rejects it and sends it away. Only this measure still exists in the world and is manifested. Therefore, it is said that everything that happens in the world comes from what is called Hevel, the Ohr Hozer.

This is not vanity but very serious inner work, quite the opposite of what we mean in our world when reading the Torah in translation.

Question: If a person says about worldly pleasures, “all of this is vanity,” does it not have in mind some semblance of Reflected Light (Ohr Hozer)?

Answer: No, this is enormous work a person performs on himself when he must make a Tzimtzum (Restriction) and then a Masach (Screen) to achieve a state of discovering the upper world, rejecting it, and sending it away from himself. Then, he sees that everything is perceived only in the Ohr Hozer.

Thus, it is possible to receive pleasure only through the Ohr Hozer. This is the Hevel. Therefore, “There is none else besides Him.” Everything else is only talking about our world that is not considered to exist at all.

There Is No Coercion In Spirituality

laitman_600_02Question: I love a woman and I want to study the wisdom of Kabbalah. The woman I love neither supports nor objects to this, but I have a feeling that she has a point in the heart. It could be that she hides it deep in her heart.

Can I ask the Creator to strengthen and intensify the point in her heart so that we can advance together toward the Creator? How can I influence the Creator to impact her so that she will realize that our life together and the wisdom of Kabbalah are the most important thing to us and to the whole world?

Answer: Spiritual development depends on one’s desire so coercion is impossible and forbidden, as one either has a desire or not. You should think about yourself and perhaps her desire will awaken through you.

Controlling Character

laitman_622_01Question from my Facebook: How do we learn to control negative character traits?

Answer: A person can control his character traits by being in the right environment that will support him and have a positive influence on him. There is no other way. Is there any other opposing force that can be used to change a person’s character? Neither personal training nor self-persuasion works these days.

All character traits are negative because everything that a person does, he does for himself only. Therefore, only the right environment can give a person the opportunity to understand how to balance himself.

Question: How does the right environment influence negative character traits? For example, what about a person who is stingy?

Answer: Stinginess is not a bad characteristic. It depends on your perspective. It could be that the person is not stingy, but cautious, considerate, and prudent. Is it better to squander or give everything away indiscriminately? Certainly not.

However, first the environment has to educate a person, directing him or her towards exiting  their personal ego and connecting together above it.  The environment will then be able to give a person the correct middle line of action.

The creation of the right society that is on a higher level than the society in which we are now is a good and blessed environment. Our job is to rise above this plane.

The Purpose Of Life

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the purpose of life?

Answer: The purpose of life is to reach the center of the connection between us in order to feel the exit into the next dimension.

Question: Who determines the goal of our development?

Answer: Nature pushes us toward reaching the goal. Kabbalah helps to reveal it, to advance us further so that we fulfill our task faster without nature thrusting us into this system by a stick.

What Is Sin?

laitman_253Question: What is sin?

Answer: Sin is using the ego to harm others, but it is possible to explain the use of the ego in different ways. For example, I can cut down a tree that is still growing and according to the definition in our world, it is not a sin even though on the spiritual level it is a sin.

If a person in our world uses more than is necessary for his normal, respectable existence, all usage above this level is called a “sin.”

This is talking about regular physical existence on a normal material level. Every beast automatically strives for this. If you give a cake to a cow or champagne to a horse, they will not touch them and they will not lie down on a feather bed. They require only what is necessary for their bodies.

Even a person needs only what is required for his physical body and no more than this. Everything else should be directed toward spiritual attainment, going out to the spiritual world. This entire life is given to a person to discover the soul in order to attain the upper world, to exit to the upper world during his lifetime. A sin is when a person is not engaged with this.

Question: For a person involved with art, writing books, painting, music, accumulating money in the bank, earning interest,  and so forth, is all of this sin?

Answer: No, but he is not carrying out his mission. All of the inclinations a person has for all the various arts and sciences are given to him only for spiritual expression, directing the world toward unity. Everything else only confuses him.

Who Created Religion?

Laitman_417Question From Facebook: Buddha did not create religion; Jesus did not create religion. If that is true, who created it and for what purpose?

Answer: Three religions exist in the world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Buddhism and all of the rest of the Eastern doctrines are not religions, but currents and methods. They exist without any pretense about anything and without imposing anything on others.

Religions were created as egoistic copies of the wisdom of Kabbalah and come to us instead of the Kabbalistic principle: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches only how to achieve love of others. It is called the inner true Judaism.

When they began to carry out the principle “Love your neighbor as yourself” between a small number of people, they discovered that, as soon as they applied it, they came across difficult problems that tore the people to pieces.

The principle “Love your neighbor as yourself” arouses intense egoistic desires and drives within a person. These are described as the “Wars of the Jews” according to history. Beginning from the tenth century BCE, for a thousand years, terrible things happened among the Jewish people. There was constant, internal civil war.

Even though people struggled to hold onto the level of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” they discovered that they could not. Therefore, the Kabbalists who managed the nation during the period of King David, King Solomon, and the rest of the kings gradually began to loosen up the higher level so as not to approach people with demands that were too high to implement this general rule.

People could not tolerate this general rule, for according to the thought of creation, the law of nature, it was necessary to reduce a person to the lowest egoistic level. So, immediately after they attained the highest level of altruism called the “First Temple,” they began to fall from this level. According to the program of creation, this was necessary.

The people had to maintain this level, but people did not succeed. The sages of the Sanhedrin that stood as their head understood that they would not succeed in holding the people to a level like this, for the people were not prepared to survive physically or spiritually.

So everything gradually deteriorated to a level where the people began to carry out ordinary physical actions instead of spiritual laws. For example, to show love, they would express this with a material gift. If they wanted to create a partnership, it was created externally, not internally. Instead of correcting oneself, a person began to immerse in a Mikveh (ritual bath), etc.

In this way people moved from the inner implementation of the law “Love your neighbor as yourself,” meaning rising above the ego, to the performance of external actions called Mitzvot (commandments).

Beginning from this period until our day, religious tradition became a copy of the spiritual actions that a person performs in his heart. The books of Kabbalah say that one must write a Torah on the walls of one’s heart. It is specifically this which is required of a person.

For this reason, the wisdom of Kabbalah is called the interior of the Torah, while religion, which teaches and maintains the Mitzvot until today, is called the exterior of the Torah and doesn’t require a person to yearn for love of others, but only to study and perform physical actions mechanically.

In our day, the period of the implementation of the external part only has finished. According to the law of nature, we must begin to ascend to the next level, meaning from the external implementation of the Mitzvot of the Torah to the interior implementation. The stipulation of “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” must remain our principle, our idea, until we discover that there is an inner meaning to all of our actions.

Question: In the past, people could not hold onto this level. Can they do so today?

Answer: Today, we no longer have a choice. We have done the preparatory work for beginning to apply this principle gradually by connecting in small groups, in groups of ten. That is how Moses united the people after they left Egypt.

We try to apply the law of “Love your neighbor as yourself” in our groups and try to show and teach it to all of humanity.
