Preparation to the Lesson
1st part of the Lesson — Writings of Baal HaSulam, Shamati #45 “Two Discernments in the Torah and in the Work”
2nd part of the Lesson — Writings of Baal HaSulam, “Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah”
3rd part of the Lesson — Studying with Friends
Question: How does the force of correction that comes during the lesson affect me?
Answer: It affects you only to the extent you want it to.
Here we are not under the authority of the Creator. He keeps us in a state where we can determine for ourselves who we are, our feelings toward Him, and what we would like to change.
He adds and subtracts all these urges, desires, and forces, and as a result, we feel what is happening to us.

Question: How can we continue to support our friend if we do not know whether she listens to the lessons? What should be the frequency so that we understand that this is the circle in which we are going along the path?
Answer: There can be no set frequency. Once a week, once a month, I do not understand this!
If you are able to, you must definitely be present at the lesson. I think that first of all, you need to think about making the group in which you are constantly present into your permanent ten.
This means that you hold on to each other, try to always be in ascent, in the form of all the ten members, and follow exactly what we are studying.

Health is a person’s balance with nature.
Comment: From the perspective of Kabbalah, health is defined as the measure of a person’s connection with the general system of nature or with the Creator. From this, it follows that in order to be healthy, one must learn correct interactions between people in society, study the laws of nature, and bring oneself into balance with them.
This is essentially identical to the definition of health given by the World Health Organization in the 1940s: “Health is a state of complete physical, spiritual, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or physical defects.” Later, they added an economic factor.
My Response: That is, if everything is balanced, then health is also balanced.
Question: The same organization says that human health depends 10% on healthcare, 20% on heredity, 20% on the quality of the environment, and 50% is determined by lifestyle.
If we remove genetics from the equation, then everything else depends on society, which completely determines a person’s health condition, except for heredity.
In addition, they say that in 32–40% of cases, the causes of physical diseases and ailments are mental states, traumas, stresses, and conflicts.
I would like to understand the causes of this. How is it all interconnected?
Answer: In principle, Kabbalah says the same thing.
Naturally, if we achieve complete balance between a person and himself, with the surrounding world, ecology, and society, then his health will also balance.
And how does one balance oneself? It means to understand that all signals directed at a person descend from the upper force, the general force of nature. If he can correctly align himself with these forces, then naturally he will constantly feel comfortable.
Then his health will become as ideal as possible, given that there still exists such a parameter as heredity. But even that can, in principle, be corrected.
The same applies to the influence of the environment, although today we have not yet brought it into balance, into a correct state in relation to us. But overall, it is possible.
Comment: As for heredity, if today we invested money in genetics instead of in armaments, we could, in principle, easily identify all our ailments already in childhood and modify these genes.
My Response: If we stopped spending money on weapons and on the production of cosmetics, we would immediately feel like we were in paradise.
These are two enormous expense items. Humanity is simply killing itself to fill them. Because of this, we lack many of the resources needed to make our lives comfortable and successful.

How Does Kabbalah Relate To Health?
Health Is A Spiritual Necessity
Question: If I understand correctly, is Kabbalah about creating difficulties in order to later feel the spiritual?
Answer: No, Kabbalah is not about creating difficulties; it is about revealing the Creator, the quality of bestowal and love, in each individual and in everyone together through the correction of egoism.
Question: But isn’t correction about breaking the ego?
Answer: No! You can try breaking it if you’re stubborn. But if you’re not, you’ll gladly exchange it instead. Let’s say you go to a store, return ten empty bottles, and get a bottle of beer in return. Is that a bad thing?! You benefit from it. Instead of empty desires you can’t fill, you get one full “beer.” Sure, you give up ten, but in return, you receive one full one. Who would refuse that?
Comment: There’s also a beneficial egoistic calculation here—what feels good to me.
My Response: Of course! There’s nothing without calculation. Kabbalah comes from the word “to receive.” You just need to understand that you actually receive much more when you give up your empty, egoistic desires. So ultimately, it can be said that “love your neighbor” is a means of self-fulfillment.
Question: Let’s say I return ten bottles and receive one full one. Is the process of correction like making that full bottle?
Answer: No, that’s not your job. That’s not you. You just need to exchange one for the other. All the “bottles,” the “recycling station,” all of it already exists. You just have to want to make the trade of your empty desires for one full one.
Question: So basically I’m not really doing anything? I just add a tiny grain to the process and the rest is the system?
Answer: You only contribute your desire to exchange, nothing more. Both the empty and the full “bottles” already exist. You just need to want to exchange them.
Question: But it won’t work automatically?
Answer: No, never. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have freewill. Otherwise, you wouldn’t truly exist. You have to do it!

Question: How can you follow the advice to “be in joy” when you feel “the taste of garbage” in spiritual work?
Answer: This is a stage where you still do not understand the importance of the garbage. But can anything grow without waste, without fertilizer? There is nothing superfluous in the world, so it all depends on your attitude.
We must go through all the states and inevitably feel each one of them. These are such states where death seems sweeter than life, but you will not be able to avoid them, because you must understand what “the will to receive” is.
I am speaking directly and without exaggeration: if you do not feel this, you will not be able to come out from under the control of the will to enjoy, although even that does not help very much. This is the revelation of the “angel of death.” Without the support of the group, without a strict daily schedule, without the commitments you take upon yourself, it is impossible to cope with it.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to take on commitments. You must complete the work today; let it press on you like a yoke on an ox. There is nothing worse than feeling free. Even though you see nothing, feel nothing, understand nothing, and remember nothing, you begin to work because you must, and gradually you come out of the state of descent and continue on the path.
We are governed by two forces, and we are given only the opportunity to move from the rule of one to the influence of the other. There is the rule of two forces and an intermediate state in which you choose under which influence to be. You must try, from this intermediate state, the middle line, to control these two forces, as if they were two reins in your hands.
Therefore, keep your daily schedule: the lesson, reviewing the lesson, sing, dance in your room when no one sees you, laugh; do everything to come out of a bad state. You don’t agree; you resist the governance of this force! Despair is the worst thing of all.

All of the Creator’s works are not as people’s works. When people build the Temple below, first they make the walls of the city and then the Temple.
First, the walls of the city, to protect them, and then the construction of the house. The Creator builds the Temple first, and finally, when He lowers it from the sky and places it in its place, it will build the walls of Jerusalem. This is why David said, “By Your favor do good to Zion” first, and then, “Build the walls of Jerusalem” (Rashbi, Zohar for All, “The Old Man [The Grandfather]”).
Question: What is the difference between building walls and building the Temple in spiritual work?
Answer: Our work lies in the fact that within the vast desire to receive pleasure that is revealed to us, we define a certain area where we are able to connect only with thoughts and desires aimed at bestowal, and we can relate them to others: friends, the group, the Creator.
All the rest of our desires we are not yet capable of using for the sake of bestowal. Therefore, our desire is divided into many parts, including the stony heart.
This is why we first build boundaries, screens, and only afterward, with the help of those screens, when we already know how to act correctly, we perform Zivug (coupling) and construct a Partzuf.
The building of the inner part of the Partzuf, from Peh to Tabur is called the construction of the Temple (in Hebrew, the word for Temple means House of Holiness). The Rosh (head) of the Partzuf is used for planning; this is called the “work of Bezalel.” The Sof (end) of the Partzuf is not yet properly engaged.
But in essence, it is with these parts of the Partzuf, which serve as boundaries, that the Temple is built, because we can construct something only from its opposite, good and evil, light and darkness; it is only by comparing opposites can we create boundaries and build a structure.
Whereas the Creator builds differently, not through limitations or calculations of “how much there is” and “how much is lacking.”
On the contrary, the upper light builds holiness, bestowal, the Temple itself within the desire, and the remaining part of the desire, which the upper light does not enter, is what forms the “walls of Jerusalem” erected afterward, in the final act.
This is the difference between constructing the Temple from below upward and constructing it from above downward.
