So That the Light Will Be Revealed

276.01Question: While listening to The Study of the Ten Sefirot, what is the condition for it to be revealed between friends and to not lead a person astray?

Answer: It will not lead you astray anywhere. You will advance. Therefore you need to think only about how you can be together in your advancement, and you will see that this is indeed so, that it influences you more.

Either you will remain in what already exists or you will move forward, try to understand what is happening, and increasingly feel which qualities you lack in order for the light to shine from itself upon you. Then you will understand everything.

What Is More Advantageous?

232.03Question: Baal HaSulam writes that there are three preceding stages in which the desire to bestow prevails over the weak desire to receive. Does this mean that at a certain stage both the desire to bestow and the desire to receive exist simultaneously? How can that be at the same time?

Answer: Even in material life this happens, when we want to bestow a little and also to receive, since we consist of two opposite desires.

Question: But we study that we consist only of the desire to receive.

Answer: Yes, but when we have a choice to receive or to bestow, then we weigh what is more advantageous for our desire.

Questions about Spiritual Work—248

231.01Question: What is an “object” in spirituality?

Answer: An object in spirituality is the desire to receive the light.

Question: There is a feeling that we are ripening for the revelation of the qualities of the ten Sefirot within the ten. How can we help each other accelerate this process?

Answer: We must try to implement what we read in the articles and in The Study of the Ten Sefirot. From this it will become clearer to us what we need to do, how, in relation to whom, and so on.

Question: What is explained in The Study of the Ten Sefirot is the science of spirituality, and it hardly touches our everyday life. To what extent are the concepts of restriction that we study in spirituality connected to restriction in everyday life, when I restrain myself from various excesses? How much does this help in spiritual advancement?

Answer: It helps a lot in spiritual advancement. I can say this with absolute certainty.

Steps of Spiritual Descent and Ascent

525These ascents are like rungs of a ladder, set and arranged degree by degree until it is completed and achieves its goal. And you should know that the quality and quantity of these rungs is set in two realities:
1) the existence of material substances,
2) the existence of spiritual concepts.

In the language of Kabbalah, they are called “from above downward” and “from below upward” (Baal HaSulam, “The Teaching of the Kabbalah and Its Essence“).

The descent of the desire from above downward and the ascent from below upward is a gradation of our egoism. As we descend from above downward, the ego manifests as increasingly corrupted, but during the ascent from below upward, it will appear increasingly corrected.

Question: So nothing disappears? In fact, we ascend those very steps by which creation descended?

Answer: Of course! There is no other way. Egoism was created opposite to the light; the light filled it, fitting it precisely, and together they form the ladder of spiritual elevation.

Question: What is the difference between the order of the descent from above downward and the order of ascent from below upward?

Answer: The ascent from below upward happens through our unity and our appeal to the Creator for help to rise and become similar to Him.

Question: Is humanity still threatened by further descents?

Answer: No, there will be no more descents. What is corrected is corrected forever!

Loving Out of Habit?

528.04Question: If one constantly practices love for one’s neighbor, can it become a habit?

Answer: It all depends on the definition of what is considered caring for one’s neighbor? If it pays well, then why not? I am ready to work for a reward. I can even care for others voluntarily if I receive some benefit from it, not necessarily monetarily, but in some other way like respect. Self-respect also works; even if no one knows about my “kindness,” such modesty can give rise to even greater pride.

One must remember: True analysis is carried out by the light that returns to the source. If I start acting on my own judgment, a thousand opportunities to deviate from the path will open before me.

At one time, Abraham gave such gifts to some of his students: “If you wish, please, plant love without the reforming light. Be sweet children, treat each other well, and good bye.” However, the true property of mercy (Hesed) from the spiritual Sefirot can be borne only by a small group, which Abraham took with him.

We must understand that if we do want to move forward, it should not be by ourselves, and not according to our own reasoning. It is the light that returns to the source (reforming light) that must reveal our path each time. I take a step forward only after it has shown me the way, whether by illuminating it or, on the contrary, by darkening it. That no longer matters. The main thing is not to act alone by following my own logic.

Question: Maybe not alone, but together, in a group, can we “get addicted” to caring for our friends?

Answer: In a proper group this can never happen. On the contrary, you will see that after each ascent comes an even greater descent. What kind of habit can there be? The “turbulence” that awaits you on the path will make you entirely forget yesterday because of the current troubles.

The Reference Point of Attainment

224Question: It is said: “Anything that we do not attain, we do not know by name.” This refers to the essence itself, the very core. We are strongly reminded not to forget this.

What is the reference point for attainment? When can we actually name this essence?

Answer: When your desires develop to the point that they are suitable for receiving the light, then the light shines within your desire. At that moment, it gives a clear definition of itself, of you, and of the action. Right now, it is still too early to speak about this in detail, but it will come very quickly.
