The Connection Between The Torah And The Book Of Zohar

Laitman_065Question: What is the relationship between the Torah and The Book of Zohar? Is it preferable to know the Torah when studying The Book of Zohar?

Answer: It is impossible to know the Torah because from the first letter to the last, it represents a code, a single line of letters that informs us of the right sequence of correction for the soul. The Torah is the course for the correction of the soul. It’s just that it is presented in such a way that we read it as a novel. That’s why we shouldn’t relate to it as to some historical, legal, or educational treatise.

With respect to The Book of Zohar, it is written as a commentary on the five books of the Torah. But only a small part of it remains, that’s why it is presented as an incomplete commentary on the full Torah. Nonetheless, The Book of Zohar is tied to the Torah.

Question: The Torah, like The Book of Zohar, was also not written by a single person?

Answer: The Torah was dictated by Moses, others wrote it down. Throughout history there has been knowledge of holy books that have been written by a collective of individuals because attainment of the upper world demands unity between people for the mutual destruction of egoism in each other. That’s why the Mishna, the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud were also written by many people.

“Forty Lashes”

Laitman_155Torah, Deuteronomy 25:01 – 25:04: If there is a quarrel between men, and they approach the tribunal, and they [the judges] judge them, and they acquit the innocent one and condemn the guilty one and it shall be, if the guilty one has incurred [the penalty of] lashes, that the judge shall make him lean over and flog him in front of him, commensurate with his crime, in number. He shall flog him with forty [lashes]; he shall not exceed, lest he give him a much more severe flogging than these [forty lashes], and your brother will be degraded before your eyes. You shall not muzzle an ox when it is threshing [the grain].

The lashes are given to us purposely to teach our egoism to obey a stronger, higher judge, which is the next level. Therefore, one can punish the ego but only to the next level. Forty is the level of Bina. There should not be more lashes because that would be considered a humiliation.

If I get forty lashes, then it is neither a humiliation nor a punishment, but it is a correction.

In our time, people would perceive it as humiliation if they were punished for an offense by beatings. Imagine a judge saying to the accused: “We sentence you to either forty lashes or 2 years in prison.” Is it not better for him to serve the time and keep his pride rather than to feel humiliated in front of others?

Previously, there were no prisons in Israel. They are not mentioned in the Torah at all because prisons do not correct. Only blows can correct.

A person and society should understand that, in this way, they oppose the egoism that the Creator has placed in a person. If a person agrees to this punishment and society believes that there is no choice, a person should not be punished but should get help to correct himself. Then, both man and society work together with the ego. It is precisely egoism that gets forty strokes and not man!

This is an educational process and not punishment.

To this day, prisons in the US are not called places of detention but, rather, correctional institutions. A dog is put into a cage and a person is placed for correction.

Egoism is given to us from above and it must be judged. That is why the people of Israel, mentioned in the Torah, went to their correction with the help of blows and not imprisonment.

Question: It is said: “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is threshing [the grain].” What does this mean?

Answer: When a spiritual level ascends in a person, the animate level has to receive what is its due.
Every person has to go through the state of blows with which he rises to the level of Bina. This is how one gets punishment and rises. And the animate remains at its level and it should get what it is supposed to.

“You Shall Write Upon Them All The Words Of The Torah”

Laitman_509Torah, Deuteronomy 27:01 – 27:03: And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Observe all of the commandment that I command you this day. And it will be, on the day that you cross the Jordan to the land the Lord, your God, is giving you, that you shall set up for yourself huge stones, and plaster them with lime. When you cross, you shall write upon them all the words of this Torah, in order that you may come to the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, God of your forefathers, has spoken to you.

The egoistic desire that initially works in us constantly grows and leads us to new “mountains” of selfish aspirations and achievements. It always works for alienation between us and becomes more and more stony and inaccessible. This “stony heart” translates into rigid, stony, relationships, without mutual permeation. This is what the stone represents.

The stony heart is what a person has; pure egoism. The Torah should be carved on it, as it is written, “Write the Torah on your heart.”

The land of Israel symbolizes a huge egoistic desire that needs to be gradually conquered, corrected, and transformed in an altruistic manner. All twelve foundations of egoistic desire must be gradually directed toward altruistic intentions, thereby correcting them.

To write or engrave the words of the Torah on the stone means to turn your egoistic heart into an opposite, altruistic one. This is an enormous work but when you take it as a condition for accepting the laws of your own correction, it means that you are crossing the river Jordan and are entering the land of Israel—those desires that you are committed to correct. This is why you are given an opportunity to enter such states.

The Jewish Calendar

laitman_628_2Religions, ideas, regulations about holidays, the creation of calendar, etc.all this comes from the people of Israel that once left Babylon.

The Jewish calendar that has been in existence nearly 6,000 years never fails because it is based on the rotation of the sun, moon, and earth. Therefore, the date of any holiday can be defined thousands of years in advance.

It is a very complex calendar because every fourth year is a leap year, every seventh year a Shmita (Sabbatical year), every 49th or 50th year a Yovel (Jubilee), and so on. Its calculations are tied both to the sun and to the moon.

The Christian calendar is based solely on the rotation of the sun, the Islamic on the rotation of the moon, so their dates are different. The Jewish calendar, however, is based on the middle line, between the moon and the sun, and therefore is unchanged.

There is a highly precise calendar compiled as far back as the 4th century BC for the next 2,000 years of exile. It indicates the angular degrees, minutes, and seconds. It can currently be found on the Internet.

The need for such a calendar was based on the fact that Jews needed to know when to bless a month, a Sabbath, and so on. Therefore, they unerringly determined which day of the week would come, suppose, in 273 years, four months, and a certain number of days, the duration of day and night, the hours of sunrise and sunset, and so on.

They had a precise knowledge of the mechanics of the entire firmament. It is very interesting. When I first saw the book describing this calendar, I was amazed. It presents a variety of astronomical charts compiled 24 centuries ago.

Do Not Gratify The “Animal” In You

laitman_627_1The Torah, Deuteronomy, 27:21: Cursed be he who lies with any animal. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

Laying with animals is completely forbidden because during such an act the person is not copulating through the human aspect within himself, but rather through the animal within himself. It is the inner state that is being referred to here.

By this act, the individual is lowering himself to such an extent that he becomes an anima and even lower than that because he is serving the animal within himself by deriving pleasure from his animal level. That is, he desires to be the animal. In other words, his behavior, in this world, is not for the sake of rising toward the Creator, but rather for pleasing the animal within himself.

A person who engages in pleasing his animal state damns himself. This means fulfilling any animal desire, not just sexual. For example, when he feeds “his cattle” only for carnal pleasure, then he sinks lower than the cattle because he is serving it. He should be feeding his animal only in order for it to rise to the level of human, that is, one should constantly be engaged in work on the self.

Question: Does that mean that a man should only lay with a woman, with a desire, in order to birth the next level?

Answer: According to the Torah, that is how it is. In the Torah, copulation is viewed only as means for spiritual advancement, when each time the person is in the intention of conceiving the next spiritual degree. In our world it is personified by the birth of new baby.

Question: And that is why this must be done on “clean” days?

Answer: Yes, in our world, following these rules is a direct reflection of spiritual forces according to root and branch.

Question: For this act to occur only for the birth of the next degree, on whom is the responsibility greater, on the man (let’s say, even within me) or on the woman? Must she be clean?

Answer: On both. There are things that only the woman knows and is able to do, while the man is not. In this, the man completely trusts the woman. There is no way that he is able to verify. Everything is based on her honesty and sense of responsibility.

Division Of The Twelve Tribes

laitman_747_02Torah, Deuteronomy 27:11 – 27:13: And Moses commanded the people on that day, saying, When you cross the Jordan, the following shall stand upon Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. And the following shall stand upon Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naftali.

The separation of the tribes into two parts (six and six) means the right and left lines.

All tribes are going to conquer the land of Israel, even those two that must stay outside Jordan. Why do they join everyone else even though to correct in the future they must create the right intention on the territory outside of Israel called “beyond Jordan”?

Because this territory also belongs to Israel, but it is attached to it from outside, so to speak. After all, all countries that are close to Israel, including Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Babylon, are related to King David’s conquests (corrections), and therefore, they were included in the land of Israel.

It goes without saying that no one claims these lands from a material point of view. We are only talking about a state that corresponds to the human soul’s inner geography.

Question: According to which properties did Moses divide the tribes into six and six?

Answer: These are: Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod, and Yesod. In the same way that there are six days of week that are divided into day and night, there are tribes that relate to the state of day and those that relate to the state of night. Some of them we bless and others—curse.

However, the tribes that we curse are not egoistic. On the contrary, they work so well that they can make corrections through their curses, that is, through the expression of even greater egoistic desires.

It is enough for us to understand that we always speak about an egoistic desire within us, which needs to be turned into an altruistic desire. And in accordance with this, one will begin to feel completely different movements, properties, and actions within this desire. One will start to rise above time and space, and this is how one will proceed.

Question: At each stage of a person’s progress more egoism is added to him and he must cover it with the right line. Does it mean that the six tribes must balance the ego?

Answer: All tribes work in unison creating a middle line between them.

In our state, the middle line is already the Creator. It is created in the right correlation of the right line to the left and the left line to the right. The upper force, called the Creator, is the combination of both lines, which occurs from above, and above them, in the middle line.

“Relatives” In Spirituality

laitman_243_03Torah, Deuteronomy 27:20: Cursed be he who lies with his father’s wife, thus uncovering the corner of his father’s garment. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

“Father and mother” is the level of the next spiritual degree. That’s why when speaking of them what is being referred to here is the complete annulment of the lower one, annulment of the lower soul before the upper, and engaging with the upper.

And here it is written about the father and his wife who is not your mother. Seemingly she is a strange woman to you. But because she belongs to the father and exists on his level, you have no right to engage her, it is the wrong Nukva for you, not the right female aspect that you are able to correct.

“Father’s wife” is a desire of a higher degree. That’s why a person who is working with a desire that he is unable to correct damns himself. He skips over a step, and by doing this, he destroys within himself the ability to advance.

What is meant by “father,” “mother,” “aunt,” “uncle,” etc. is the next degree on which you become the father with respect to the previous degree. But you have no right to work with a desire of a higher degree than your own, that is, “uncover the corner of your father’s garment.” But when you rise to that degree, then it will be for you.

Question: When a son is born, we always say that it is the next spiritual degree. And now it is clear that the father is the next spiritual degree. How is this possible?

Answer: The next spiritual degree is not higher than the father because the father continuously rises up and the son rises up after him. There is strict subordination here. The relationship is always maintained: the son rises to the degree of the father and, at the same time, the father rises even higher.

“And All The People Shall Say, ‘Amen!’”

arava-convention_931-01.jpgTorah, Deuteronomy 27:16: …And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

“Amen” is translated as “truth,” “verity,” and expresses our inner agreement, the inner decision, to do some action with all our strength.

Therefore, the people are obliged to say “Amen” before the entrance to the land of Israel. This is an agreement with those conditions without which they can’t enter, because to enter means to rise to the correction of completely new egoistic desires and intentions that are now being revealed.

At every stage the people repeat “Amen” because every time they enter into a completely new correction.

“Cursed Be He Who Degrades His Father And Mother”

laitman_289Torah, Deuteronomy 27:16: Cursed be he who degrades his father and mother. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

Father and mother are the two highest sources of desire and the correct work with it. The desire to receive in order to bestow is the quality of father. Aspiration to rise only above your egoistic desire is the quality of mother.

This is Hochma and Bina. A person must accept both qualities from them, correctly connect them within himself, and move forward this way.

But one who doesn’t perform correction at every moment will exist inside the uncorrected desire, and this is the curse.

In other words, there are no any material punishments and curses. The fact that we remain in our egoistic desires and exist in them is the punishment and curse.

A Description Of Spiritual Communication

Laitman_137Torah, Deuteronomy, 25:11 – 25:12: If [two] men, a man and his brother, are fighting together, and the wife of one of them approaches to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she stretches forth her hand and grabs hold of his private parts you shall cut off her hand You shall not have pity.

In the Torah, there are things that cannot be explained in a rational way but only by connecting the spiritual parts of the soul, Partzufim, with each other.

And if a person does not know this, then all corporeal descriptions of spiritual communication look like medieval tales to him.

Question: What does it mean if men are fighting together?

Answer: This means there is no middle line, a contradiction. But this is not easy, we are talking about the levels of Aba ve Ima, Yeshsut. Everything happens inside a person.
