Calling Out To The Creator For Help

The Torah, “Numbers,” 14:39 – 14:45: Moses related all these words to the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly. They arose early in the morning and ascended to the mountaintop, saying, “We are ready to go up to the place of which the Lord spoke, for we have sinned.”

Moses said, “Why do you transgress the word of the Lord? It will not succeed.

Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, [so that] you will not be beaten by your enemies. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you will fall by the sword. For you have turned away from the Lord, and the Lord will not be with you.

They defiantly ascended to the mountaintop, but the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord and Moses did not move from the camp. The Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived on the mountain came down and smote them and crushed them [pursuing them] until Hormah.

Question: Why were the children of Israel punished? After all, they expressed their regret and said: “Yes, we have sinned?”

Answer: There was no sin. The Creator arranged everything! The problem is that they depended on their own powers, thinking that they had to overcome the mountain by themselves. They wanted to do it by their own egoistic powers, but the mountain is the attribute of bestowal, so how could they climb it? Where is the adhesion with the Creator? Where is the absolute bestowal? There is none!

On the contrary, if I say that I have sinned, it means that I take responsibility for what I do. Admitting the sin is the sin!

I am nothing and I have to constantly advance with my eyes closed following the force of love and bestowal so that they will gradually reside in me. Now I only gather levels of ascent towards the attribute of Bina.

The attribute of Bina is the attribute of complete bestowal, which reaches me only by an illumination from above. This is the Light that Reforms, which means the Creator’s force. In an ideal state I would say that I am ready for everything that the Creator shows me.

But I continue the sin of the spies. Why didn’t they call out to the upper force? “We have brought giant fruits but they are beyond our powers. How can we enter this land?” Why didn’t they demand the Creator’s help but instead turned to the people?” See what He does with us? He sends us to a sure death, tempting us with a wonderful land where an immense power lives and which will kill us. “Are these the nation’s leaders whom the most advanced people of the generation have chosen?” It turns out that they are all against the one force, the good and the benevolent, who wants to bring them to the Promised Land, but they cannot even approach the next level.

This was clear beforehand, because it is impossible to leap from the level of Malchut to the level of Bina at one time. The difference between Malchut and Bina is 40 levels. Therefore, when we look at Bina from Malchut, its attainment seems impossible!

But on the other hand, who brings us to this? The Creator. Who said that they should send spies there? The Creator. So why didn’t they turn to Him? Why did they begin to speak against Him?: “Look what He does with us; He sends us to certain death, luring us to a beautiful land with terrible giants that will kill us!”

Theoretically, if they had called out to the Creator, He would have raised them on wings to the level of Bina. But on the other hand, this is impossible because a person has to experience all this himself, to chew and process it.

This is the reason that Moses says: “Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper? Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies.” He realizes that they are not connected to the Creator!

Comment: This is so complicated.

Answer: This isn’t complicated at all. It is a good thing that we discover the right and left lines and thus advance. This is our history, not the past or the future, but the history ahead of us!

Repentance Before Rosh HaShanah

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn order to ask for forgiveness, we must know what love is for people like yourself and what it means by asking these questions, “What haven’t I done on behalf of this love? If it is necessary to feel that I have love for others, which is the main Mitzvah (commandment) of the Torah, do I or do I not feel it?” Many people think that it is enough just to carry out physical Mitzvot.

The Kabbalists advise us to unite into groups of 10, so that together we can check if we are truly treating each other well. Is everyone trying to distance himself from his ego and connect with others, become integrated with their desires and to feel love between us? If we understand that all of this doesn’t exist, we feel we are to blame, so we ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness is for not carrying out the main condition, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Today, this condition has become imperative for the whole world in order to come out of the global crisis. But the people of Israel must be the first to realize this, and we are not doing it. So we ask for the power to help us attain this love. We clearly see that we are not prepared to carry out this condition by ourselves, but we can ask for help. And we conclude the Selichot (forgiveness) by asking for the power to carry out the main Mitzvah and bringing people closer together. And through this getting closer we also get closer to the higher force, the Creator.

A person cannot realize this by himself, so we work in a group, which is how we check if we have attained mutual bestowal and connection or not. If not, we need to ask for the power to help us connect and reach unity. This common request is called prayer and it is derived from our connection, from the center of our circle, like a pillar that rises upward. When we examine our union, we reach Selichot.

From here we see that without studying the wisdom of Kabbalah, it is impossible to discover what to ask, towards what to be attracted, the purpose of Creation, and how the Torah is connected to the Mitzvot of love of others and love of the Creator through the entire order of correction. The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us how to realize ourselves according to what is written in the Torah. The only Mitzvah is to rise above our ego and attain connection and unity between everyone. It includes within it all the rest of the Mitzvot, which are individual corrections of our ego. The egoistic desire is composed of 613 parts, each one of which we must correct, beginning with the easiest and moving towards what is more and more difficult. In this way it is necessary to carry out 613 corrections, which are called the 613 (Taryag) Mitzvot.

When we help each other we ultimately attain redemption, meaning that we discover the higher power, the Creator, within our correct mutual connection of bestowal and love. And this is the forgiveness before Rosh HaShanah. Certainly it is impossible to begin the New Year, the new beginning, the next level, towards which we must ascend thanks to our correction without clarifying all that we went through. And this is the essence of repentance, to ask with greater vigor for the Light that Reforms to correct us and make it possible for us to attain an even stronger union.

Special Attributes Of The Third And Fourth Generations

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Numbers,” 14:17 – 14:18: Now, please, let the strength of the Lord be increased, as You spoke, saying, “The Lord is slow to anger and abundantly kind, forgiving iniquity and transgression, Who cleanses [some] and does not cleanse [others], Who visits the iniquities of parents on children, even to the third and fourth generations.”

There are three generations from Keter to Malchut: Hochma, Bina, and  Zeir Anpin. That’s the way it is in every spiritual state. The Creator’s image is formed on the fourth level, Malchut. The third generation is Zeir Anpin, a state of smallness, where the ego is erased and then fully corrected in the fourth generation. This is symbolized by the words: Who visits the iniquities of parents on children, even to the third and fourth generations. It is about the ascent of Malchut through Zeir Anpin to Bina, to Hochma, and then to Keter.

The Torah, “Numbers,” 14:19 – 14:23: Please forgive the iniquity of this nation in accordance with your abounding kindness, as You have borne this people from Egypt until now. And the Lord said, “I have forgiven them in accordance with your word. However, as surely as I live, and as the glory of the Lord fills the earth that all the people who perceived My glory, and the signs that I performed in Egypt and in the desert, yet they have tested me these ten times and not listened to My voice, if they will see the Land that I swore to their fathers, and all who provoked Me will not see it.

There is nothing bad about that. On the contrary, it is about a great mercy that the Creator performs when He kills everyone, which means that He kills all of the egoistic desire.

The reason is that it is only in the altruistic desires that replace the egoistic desires that the people can feel the state called the land of Israel. All this rage is necessary in order to correct egoism to altruism. No egoist can enter the state of the attribute of love and bestowal called the land of Israel. He must first die, which means to be reborn and enter it, either in a state of smallness (the third generation) or in a state of greatness (the fourth generation).

Therefore, when the Torah speaks about punishment, destruction and death, it refers to the egoism, which actually has to be destroyed. Only the attributes of love and bestowal that replace it will feel the state of the land of Israel.

The Torah: Changing Yourself In Order To Reveal The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Numbers,” 14:13 – 14:16: Moses said to the Lord, “But the Egyptians will hear that You have brought this nation out from its midst with great power. They will say about the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that You, O Lord, are in the midst of this people; that You, the Lord, appear to them eye to eye and that Your cloud rests over them. And You go before them with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire by night, and if You kill this nation like one man, the nations who have heard of Your reputation will say as follows: ‘Since the Lord lacked the ability to bring this nation to the Land which He swore to them, He slaughtered them in the desert.'”

Moses seems to say to the Creator: “You could have educated your children properly, if not by incentives, then at least by punishment. What kind of an educator are you if you simply punish your children and kill them?”

Moses is the innermost point in a person’s heart, where he can be in contact with the Creator. When a person ascends to the next level, from the level of Bina to the level of Hochma, for example, he undergoes an internal change. He must say that! It isn’t that Moses suddenly begins to complain: “How dare you behave that way?!” On the whole, religious people fear such thoughts: “Is it possible to think that way about the Creator? God forbid! What will happen to me if I think this way?” On the other hand, here is the opposite situation, since after all, it is nature itself that was created by the Creator that now rebels against Him inside us so that we will actually understand our current situation is opposite from nature.

This means that when a person ascends and gets closer to the Creator, he can not be afraid to disagree with Him and curse Him, even from the depths of his soul. He is glad about such changes because they actually indicate his true, high state.

Therefore, what Moses says indicates that he is about to complete his level on which he led the people in the desert for 40 years. He turns the attribute of receiving into the attribute of bestowal and now attains the last corrections of his ego. This level is like a missile that has fulfilled its function, becomes detached, and burns up in the atmosphere.

Moses’ complaints stem from the state of the end of correction, after he completed his work on the current level. The next level is totally different and on this level there is the fulfillment of receiving with the intention to bestow.

It is impossible to perform the mission that the Creator now gives the people who have just crossed the desert and reached Him. This mission cannot be attained this way because the next phase is to receive with the intention of in order to bestow. In the next phase, called the crossing of the border of the land of Israel, changes in a person from the outside towards the inside take place and totally new vessels appear within him, which is a new method of working on himself and a new perception of the world. This isn’t only the feeling of the world but the beginnings of the realization of how he has to correct the world. Until then he only prepared himself to enter the land of Israel and conquer it, which means in order to defeat all the nations of giants that live there and to attain such a level that the giant fruits that he carried would become light because he can receive with the intention of in order to bestow.

So Moses’ complaints are just because he demands new powers and new knowledge from the Creator. He wants to learn a new correction and receive education on how to enter this land and conquer it. There has to be an extreme upheaval inside a person and he has to turn into a different person.

Question: Does that mean that Moses can complain to the Creator?

Answer: The talk between Moses and the Creator is the complete recognition of what should happen to him now: “I need an inner transformation and You have to do it for me.” If he doesn’t complain to the Creator about this, it means that he is not yet ready for the transition. Therefore, everything Moses says, which may seem like a serious attack on the Creator is actually desirable to Him. This means that a person understands what a serious inner transformation he has to undergo in order to start working with his ego with the intention of in order to bestow. No one can imagine this.

Comment: Instead of not saying the Lord’s name in vain and not being angry at Him etc., everything happens in the exact opposite manner.

Answer: We shouldn’t be afraid of anything. The Creator is the attribute of absolute goodness. He is still and lifeless until you bring Him to life through your feelings. Just as you can be angry at a volcano that destroyed a certain region or fear the sun, the moon, or earthquakes, when you attribute your feelings to still objects, you also relate to the Creator in the same manner, to the attribute of bestowal and absolute love. You cannot bestow in one way or another, but simply change yourself.

When you change yourself, you change your personal reception and so the Creator seems different to you. But you are actually the one who is changing yourself! The whole Torah is based on a prayer, which in Hebrew stems from the root word that means to judge yourself.

A prayer means self-judgment, and asks what I need to change inside myself in order to reveal the Creator as the absolute good. Of course, this where Moses’ job ends, but is a preparation for the next phase.

The Reconquering Of Pharaoh

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Numbers,” 13:25 – 13:29: They returned from scouting the land at the end of forty days. They went, and they came to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the desert of Paran, to Kadesh. They brought them back a report, as well as to the entire congregation, and they showed them the fruit of the land. They told him and said, “We came to the land to which you sent us, and it is flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who inhabit the land are mighty, and the cities are extremely huge and fortified, and there we saw even the offspring of the giant. The Amalekites dwell in the south land, while the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountainous region. The Canaanites dwell on the coast and alongside the Jordan.”

Comment: When the spies spoke about the land of Israel they were very excited, but suddenly there is a turning point…

Answer: The upper world is very attractive. It isn’t the egoistic communism we have been fed by the European utopians during the Middle Ages, but rather the state of a person who has fully attained and knows all of creation and his role within it. This person has attained the upper force and feels that he is in the attribute of bestowal, beyond the limitations of existing for his own sake. He totally attains all the states of the worlds throughout time and on all the levels inside himself, including all of nature, meaning both our world and the upper world.

Of course we don’t attain the upper world because it is above our universe and is a billion times larger. But we have to discover it eventually, and therefore we have the potential that draws us to the attainment of this state. But when you clarify what you have to do in order to reach this, you realize that it is totally beyond your powers because you are like a tiny mouse in a great world. What can you do?

So the spies were right. They came with two accurate conclusions regarding the land of Israel. On the one hand, there are all sorts of fruits, i.e., all sorts of comprehension—everything you can imagine and even billions of times greater than what we have today, just as the generation of the Middle Ages could not imagine life in our generation. On the other hand, they had no powers, no preconditions, nor understanding, neither moral nor intellectual. They couldn’t reach the states of attainment since they were not prepared for them.

This is actually what happened, because the spies belonged to the generation of the desert who lived where there was nothing and where they had to try to be in a strong, mutual connection to advance. But, when they entered the land of Israel, they confronted their internal egoism, which treated them with disrespect, like Pharaoh. He reappears among them and once again, forces them to conquer him because the land of Israel is based on the conquering of Pharaoh.

The exodus from Egypt is just the escape from Pharaoh, and during the 40 years of wandering in the desert, we neutralize him. Now, however, we need to take this animal out of its den and begin to restrain it so that by taming it, it will carry out all our orders. This seems to be absolutely impossible!

When the spies look at all this horror, they forget that there is an upper force that plans everything and that they have to advance in accordance with this force and be a like a small child holding the hand of a grownup, not fearing anything. The spies couldn’t take that into account because they were terrified of the greatness they had to attain, of the infinity and uncertainty revealed to them by infinite space. When a person feels that there are no limits, he feels lost.

When a person is in a certain framework in certain limits, he feels that everything is simple, easy, and free. But if he transcends these limits, he loses the ability to weigh things and find his way around. This is very scary for those who reach a more sublime state. Therefore, every person who is about to enter the land of Israel—the correction of egoism to love and bestowal and the inclination of the ego towards the Creator—experiences such feelings.

The Creator Precedes Everything

laitman_276_02Why do we understand the world in which we are living? It is because we feel it. If we started to feel it in a different way, it would be understood as something else felt inside ourselves.

In other words, the feeling must be prior to understanding. It is impossible to understand the reality we don’t feel. This doesn’t happen. Sometimes, it is possible to understand something in our world according to our imagination because we have models of feeling particular objects inside, and it is possible to imagine them in some form. But this is a problem.

Are we ready to imagine, let’s say, the taste of grapes with benzene? Which is to say, as long as we haven’t tangibly experienced something, Kelim (vessels) are not created in us since Kelim are desires, feelings, and before this, our brain has nothing to work with.

So, our problem with the Creator is that He is the only force, and we have the opportunity in our world to feel ourselves separate from Him, and this is the greatest thing that He ever did. He created something as if it exists outside of Him (existence from absence), and specifically from this nonexistence it is possible to begin to attain the Creator.

But it is impossible to understand Him with the intellect because He is characteristics, manners, and activities that are completely incomprehensible to us. Levels of approaching the Creator are according to the degree of equivalence with Him. The biggest problem of our getting closer is that with every step of our approach to the Creator, we must understand more and more—feel, know, and grasp inside of us—that all of our movements within our desires, thoughts, drives and plans, whatever they may be when we direct ourselves directly toward Him, and even any opposing activities when we want to twist and lie to ourselves, in all of this the Creator precedes us.

It makes no difference how we perceive ourselves, in whatever desires, thoughts or actions, we always discover Him first and, after that, ourselves. And where am I? It becomes clear that the “self” of each one of us is specifically in understanding the fact that the Creator is everywhere and one must adhere with Him at this point. So, the self gradually, in parts, in some point, will adhere with the Creator until reaching full equivalence with Him. This form is called Adam (Man).

However, for us, it is difficult to imagine this because everything must happen within our desires, and this will be realized only when we begin to move within our inner analysis toward the discovery of the Creator in everything inside of us and around us, according to the principle of “There is none else besides Him.”

What I am thinking now, this is His thought. Is my reaction to this thought also my reaction or His reaction? In what way can our thoughts be equivalent? In what way can I see the difference between Him and me? If I don’t agree with the thought that is aroused in me, it means that this disagreement comes from Him, and here it begins to become clear where my form still is not like His.

This is a very interesting analysis. In the beginning, it is tiresome. After that, it begins to be interesting. After all, this is a constant inner game that, in fact, adds to our life and gives it inner meaning, inner energy, a source of movement. If a person begins to search for the Creator in all of his drives, feelings and thoughts—even in movements that are unconscious and instinctive reactions—it means that he is searching for the way in which he is different from the Creator.

In the still, vegetative, and animate nature, the Creator manifests instinctively. Everything happens there according to particular laws. There are no problems, and all of the laws of nature are carried out precisely.

So we cannot have any complaints against animals, not can there be any complaints of animals against each other. Everything is in a particular balance: who eats whom and who exists at the expense of whom. Everything is defined from the start. Everything must exist this way. There is a precise and instinctive transmission of nature here. The Creator acts in them naturally and is not expressed in any form.

It is the same thing in regard to people in whom the Creator does not want to be revealed. He works instinctively. We see that all of the great politicians, economists, and in part also the scientists (there are those who already are conscious of their difference), not to mention the common people, all of them exist instinctively. The Creator is not revealed in regard to them.

In what way is He revealed to us? First, He compels us to search for the reason for our existence—meaning, to begin searching for Him—and brings us to a feeling as to where and in what way we are beginning to grow above our animate level. If I am involved in this now, I am trying to understand in what place in me, in my thoughts and feelings, I can grasp the Creator, where He constantly challenges me, manages me from within. This thought is related to the level of Adam. I want to rise above instinctive behavior and consciously recognize the management of the Creator, conscious from my point of view. This is precisely the way we must go.

Here, we gradually begin to detach from Him and connect with Him consciously, which is to say that previously I was under the instinctive management of the Creator: Everything that I did, all of my previous life specifically had to be like that. Everything is attributed to Him!

From this moment on, I want to feel His activity in all of my feelings, my desires, in whatever happens inside of me and, after that, decide if I agree with this action, how I can adhere with Him, but consciously.

In the beginning, I must feel that He—this is He, and I—this is I, and that He is doing something within me. Do I agree with His desires and thoughts with heart and mind, to what He is doing with me? If not, I must connect with Him and adhere to Him above my desire and thoughts. This is very great work. Here, I begin to separate myself from the Creator (this is called “analysis of the state”) and after that, make a correction, connecting myself to Him (this is called “correction and adhesion”).

The distance between Him and me is determined by my ego that I am beginning to discover within me, and the more that I work on myself, the more my ego grows from minus to an immense plus or from instinctive behavior to an awareness that He is the one who is acting this way, but I still agree with Him and move back toward Him. This proceeds conically, and we must connect these two systems within the middle line.

Through the understanding that without the ego we could not differentiate ourselves from Him, become an independent, created being, we give great contentment to the Creator. Only then do we begin to understand what existence from absence is, and from there we connect ourselves to “existence from existence.”

Is the Creator Alive?

Laitman_109Question: It has been said that the Creator is suffering much more than we do because He has to conceal Himself and send sufferings to us. Does this mean that the Creator is alive? If not, then the notion “to please the Creator” doesn’t make sense.

Answer: Everything we sense is only inside us even though it seems to us that it exists outside of us.

Therefore, the Creator in Hebrew is Bore from the words “Bo – come and Re – see.” It means, “attain the Creator according to your spiritual properties.” The wisdom of Kabbalah explains how one can reveal them within oneself.

As a result, everything is explained through a person’s words and feelings, the way a person feels it rather than the way it’s sensed outside of him, by the Creator. Moreover, there is no Creator outside of the person!

An Unchangeable Law Of Nature

Laitman_707The Creator is the higher general law of nature. It is described in the Torah how Moses would shout when he turned to the Creator, but there was nobody to whom to turn. As it is written, “A voice calls … in the wilderness” (Isaiah 40:3).

In general, we convey our images, impressions, and our mutual relationship with the Creator exactly the way we would convey our anger to a malfunctioning computer.

However, in fact, the higher power is an unchangeable law of nature, and so it is written, “He issued a decree, which will not change” (Psalms 148:6). So, there is no one to whom to turn except yourself!

There exists an immutable program within which we are found, and we must work within it. Otherwise, we strive and take pains until we reach an awareness of how to continue to go on.

Nothing will change for the better if we don’t work on ourselves to reach a good connection with others and, moreover, with everyone! Neither good relationships in the family nor even with all people will help us. Egoistic alliances will not help here; everything must be absolutely altruistic.

We need to work beyond of ourselves, outside of all egoistic calculations. That is how we hold onto everyone, only with altruistic connections.

Eternal Love

laitman_934Question: The Creator’s name is love, which tells us about Him. When we love, we become like Him. When we die, we disappear and cannot love anymore. Is the Creator’s love eternal or not?

Answer: There is no death but a change in our perception of reality from the perception through the body, seemingly as if through a corporeal body, to a direct perception in the desire called a soul.

When we acquire the connection with the soul along with this perception we smoothly transcend to the next form of perception. The connection with the soul is acquired through our love of mankind. But this is not what is meant by love now, in our egoism,; it is outside ourselves, outside egoism. Kabbalah teaches about love and it and the Creator are perceived (in the group of friends).

Is There A God?

Laitman_712_03Question: Is there a God?

Answer: I don’t know what people mean when they say “God.” If by God we mean a force that controls everything, then that force is nature.

As we learn more about nature, we see that everything about it is rational, balanced, and works according to its laws. We know some of these laws, others we do not, and for this reason their essence is hidden from us. We believe in various miracles and actions that supposedly can affect our course of actions, and this is all because we lack knowledge. The science of Kabbalah offers the possibility of learning these laws.

Nature can be called God if we remember that it is an absolutely rigid force, which does not abide to any of our wishes. It is not like our parents to whom we can come and cry and they will have pity on us. Our tears will not help. It is a system that acts according to its precise laws. As it is written, “I gave a law, and I do not change it.”

According to the science of Kabbalah, the numerical value (Gematria) of the words “nature” and “God/Creator” are the same. Therefore, turning to the Creator is the same as turning to nature. However, it’s best to call this force nature because we immediately understand that we are talking about rigid laws and pleading to them will not help.

A person should know how to behave and correct himself in order for these laws to become benevolent for him. And if he does not use them correctly, then naturally he will receive a negative reaction, as with any physical laws.

Therefore, there is no God whom we can mollify or somehow appease!
