“My Teacher And I”

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom My Facebook Page Michael Laitman 9/22/20

One cold, rainy evening in February 1979, as I was doing my usual delving into Kabbalah books with my friend Chaim Malka, I realized that it was hopeless. “Chaim,” I said, “we are going to find a teacher right now.” We got into the car and drove off to Bnei Brak, an Orthodox city where I had heard that people study Kabbalah. As the rain poured down the windshield; I drove almost blindly, in zero visibility. But I was driven from within; I had to keep going.

Once inside the city, we had no idea where to go. Suddenly, I saw a man standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross the street. In the pouring rain, he was the only one around. I rolled down the window and hollered through the torrent: “Where do they study Kabbalah around here?!”

The man looked at me nonchalantly and said, “Turn left and drive toward the orchard. At the end of the street you’ll see a house across from it; that’s where they study Kabbalah.”

In that house by the orchard, I met my teacher, Rav Baruch Shalom HaLevi Ashlag (RABASH), the firstborn son and successor of Rav Yehuda Leib HaLevi Ashlag, the greatest kabbalist of the 20th century, who was known as Baal HaSulam (author of the Sulam) after his Sulam (Ladder) commentary on The Book of Zohar.

During the next twelve years, I served as RABASH’s personal assistant and became his prime disciple. I studied with him three hours in the morning and two hours in the evening with everyone else. I also studied with him while we were alone as I took him on his daily outings to the beach or to the park. I studied with him every other weekend when the two of us spent weekends in each other’s company, and I studied with him when he was hospitalized for a month on two occasions. I asked him all the questions that I could about spirituality, whether during lessons or while driving, or at any other opportunity. I asked him because I needed to know. I knew he was the last of the Mohicans, the final link in a lineage that goes back millennia, and I knew I would have to keep that teaching going. I recorded every lesson and took notes of his words. I absorbed from him everything I could, the outer and the inner meaning of the words, so I could pass them on when the time came.

After some years, when RABASH told me that I needed friends with whom to practice spiritual work, I brought him forty students. To them he started writing his priceless essays about one’s progress from a regular person to a kabbalist—who knows the innermost subtleties of human nature and one’s relationship with the Creator.

The essays of RABASH paved the way not only for his students, but for all of us, every single person. Now these essays are a lighthouse that shows the way to anyone who wants to achieve spirituality. They teach us how to relate to one another and how to relate to the feelings and states we discover within us along the way. RABASH, much like his father in his own way, was a pioneer, a trailblazer of endless courage, compassion, and love for humanity.

After his demise in 1991, people asked me to start teaching. RABASH had encouraged me to teach while I was still with him, so when people approached me I consented and formed a study group we called Bnei Baruch (sons of Baruch). Indeed, we aspired then and aspire now to merit the name and be my teacher’s spiritual children.

Today, as we commemorate the 29th anniversary of his passing, it is my hope that we will continue to merit the name Bnei Baruch, to walk in his path of love and unity, and to spread the authentic wisdom of Kabbalah throughout the world to every thirsty soul.

“And once I have acquired a clothing of love, sparks of love begin to shine within me, the heart begins to long to unite with my friends, and it seems to me that my eyes see my friends, my ears hear their voices, my mouth speaks to them, the hands embrace, and the feet dance in a circle, in love and joy together with them. And I transcend my corporeal boundaries and forget the vast distance between my friends and I … and it seems to me that there is no reality in the world except my friends and I. After that, even the ‘I’ is cancelled and immersed, mingled in my friends, until I stand and declare that there is no reality in the world but the friends” (RABASH, Letter No. 8).

Agreeing With The Teacher

604.01Question: If I do not really understand what the teacher tells me or I do not agree with what he says, does it interfere with my receiving the light through him?

Answer: You need to accept everything the teacher says as the absolute truth, and at the same time scrutinize it, because if you don’t agree with something, you must understand it and agree, since this is the reason that you develop.

No one is forcing you to close your eyes and agree with the teacher in advance, but you are called upon to accept his perspective and reach the state in which you will attain it and agree with it. If you begin to see flaws in it in advance, you will not advance.

Holding On To The Teacher

444Question: What does it mean to hold on to the teacher and to feel him, and what does it mean to receive the light through the teacher?

Answer: To hold on to the teacher and to feel the teacher are two different things. To hold on to the teacher means to try to do everything he advises you to do, to learn everything that he teaches you. You can hold on to the teacher only if you fulfill all his requirements and help him, even perhaps in his daily life, but mainly in the process of the study and dissemination.

Dedicate yourself to serving not the person, but what he represents, and then you will discover that this is how you begin to attain the upper world.

Perpetuate The Name?

laitman_294.2Question: Should schools of integral education that will be opened by your students be named after you?

Answer: Why on earth? First of all, I didn’t invent anything new, so I’m not supposed to do anything here. Don’t attribute anything to me.

Our organization is named after my teacher RABASH. Our center is located on a street named after him in Petach Tikva, Israel. I don’t need anything else.

I will teach a couple of thousand people the Kabbalistic method, and they will go further. And personally, I will disappear into them. That’s my feeling.

How To Find Guides On Spiritual Paths?

laitman_530Question: How can a newly created group of friends find a teacher?

Answer: Finding a teacher is a problem. You have to choose a real teacher who does not hide the goal from you and has the experience in how to lead people to it.

He, in turn, also had the right teacher and will not hide from you that the path  is not  easy, it is long and difficult, but he will lead you forward in a consistent way. And he will not just lead, but will walk this path together with you. Of course, he is already at a different degree, but he still goes with you.

I do not think that today you can find such teachers, “guides” on spiritual paths, except among my students. I am not just advertising them to you, there are no others in the world.

To My Students, Friends, And Followers

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom My Facebook Page Michael Laitman 6/15/20

We are living in a special time. The hidden connections that tie us all into one whole have emerged and demand our attention. At such a time, we are all accountable; we are responsible for one another. What each of us does, says, and thinks, impacts every single person, and the whole planet.

For this reason, now we must pursue unity more than ever before. We must pursue it above all that separates us: race, color, religion, gender, language, culture, history, literacy, mentality, and character. We are one body, one organism, and in an organism, there is no hatred among the organs, only love, respect, and gratitude to each organ for carrying out its unique role. Now that we are all connected, we can see that we, humanity, are just like any organism. We are all dependent on each other, and we must therefore cherish one another.

When we help each other grow and express each one’s uniqueness, we are not doing it for another person; we are doing it for ourselves! When each of us is happy, all of us are happy. This is how it works in an organism. And when we work as an organism, we will discover the power that exists in unity. This power, which enables all of reality to work in harmony, exists among us. If we build our connections in congruence with this power, we will feel it filling up the cavities between us. Then, all hatred and anguish will cease.

In these special times, every person in humanity is summoned to partake in the unity, and spread it far and wide. The wider we spread it, the more we will feel it. For this reason, I am asking all my friends, students, and followers to please share this message. Share the posts on my page wherever you can; place them on your wall and in groups where you are members. You are not doing this for yourselves; you are doing this for the world, to spread unity and love the world over. Never before has spreading love and unity been more pressing and essential than it is today. By doing so, you are healing humanity from hatred; you are ushering in solidarity, friendship, and happiness at a time of great transformation. It is in your hands to determine if we go through it pleasantly and easily, or painfully and slowly.

Please spread the word,
Michael

A Teacher Of The Wisdom Of Kabbalah

laitman_582.01Question: Those who teach courses in the wisdom of Kabbalah have not attained the state that they teach. How can a person convey what he has not attained?

Answer: Do you think that a teacher of mathematics needs to necessarily be a triangle or a square?

Comment: I think that he needs to understand what it is.

My Response: A teacher gives you access to knowledge so that you can be in contact with it, connect and integrate in it according to the method that he teaches you. In any case he cannot convey his spiritual feelings to you.

Question: These are subjective feelings, of course. Are you in a corrected state?

Answer: I will not tell you. Open your eyes a bit more widely and you will see.

Two Sources Of Connection With The Spiritual World

laitman_528.02Question: Is our connection with the spiritual world either through a book written by Kabbalists or through people who have already attained this system?

Answer: No, connection with the upper world is very difficult to obtain through a book. It can be only through a teacher, and so constantly, from generation to generation.

The book does not replace communication with a Kabbalist-teacher. You can read many books that can direct a person to the right goal, but you can achieve it only by learning from the right teacher.

Moreover, not all Kabbalists, those who have attained the highest state of nature, can be teachers. It depends on the root of the soul. Someone has it, someone does not. As in our world: a person can be a great scientist, but a terrible teacher, i.e., he is not given these abilities. But there are, on the other hand, those who teach extremely well, but they themselves are small fries.

Question: So, the connection with the upper world takes place through two components: a teacher and a book?

Answer: Yes. Therefore, this science is called “Kabbalah,” that is, “receiving,” including from the teacher.

Attuning To The Upper

laitman_267.01We are not able to understand the view of the upper who thinks on a different level, and therefore, we do not agree with it. No matter how much I check my conclusions and the conclusions of the upper, I only become more and more convinced that this is unacceptable for me.

The view of the upper seems to be unreasonable to me, detached from reality, a naive fantasy. According to my understanding, it can’t be true.

And after I have checked several times and made sure that there is no way to justify the upper, I stop myself by saying, “Now I am going to accept the opinion of the upper above my mind, even though it contradicts my opinion.” And it is because it is against my understanding that I accept it by faith above reason and rejoice in the opportunity to do so.

And if I can’t accept it, then I ask the upper to give me the strength to do so because I go by faith above reason and accept the opinion of the upper. And it is clear to me that my knowledge remains at the bottom, and the knowledge of the upper is higher, one on top of the other.

That is, I did not replace my previous knowledge, understanding, and perception with the upper’s knowledge, understanding, and perception, like in our world children accept the opinion of adults. In the spiritual, I remain with my own opinion, and in addition to it, I receive the opinion of the upper and work according to it. In this form, I will exist in spiritual reality.

My opinion, verified a thousand times, with which I remained, is called my knowledge. And the opinion of the upper, also verified by me a thousand times, becomes my faith, which is higher than my reason because I take it for the truth, although according to my understanding, it is not real at all.

It is clear that this does not agree with the rational logic of our world, but this is how the spiritual ascent occurs and the perception of the upper world is revealed. Even now we are in the upper reality, so why don’t we feel it? Because we cannot yet replace our attunement with the corresponding spiritual reality, that is, tune our heart and mind to the perception of the higher world.

And even if I don’t understand the upper world yet and I can’t reveal what the Kabbalists are talking about, I should be grateful that I was allowed to at least get close to it and hear about it. I am happy to be among those who are moving toward the entrance to the spiritual world—this in itself is a great privilege and a personal gift from the Creator. Therefore, I am full of gratitude and joy, and bless the upper force for the great mercy to me.

It is very important to develop such an attitude in oneself, a desire to get closer to the Creator, thank Him, and do everything necessary to be able to serve Him in some way.

A Gold Coin In An Empty Pocket

laitman_622.01A good example of faith above reason is contained in the story of David Leikes, a student of the Baal Shem Tov. The student says that they sat with the teacher at a meal late in the evening at the end of the Sabbath, and no one had a penny in their pocket, they were all very poor.

And suddenly the teacher said to him: “David, give me money to buy mead.” And the student put his hand in his pocket, drew out a gold coin, and gave it to him.

How could that be, when he knew that his pocket was empty? But since the upper one had told him to give him money, he didn’t hesitate to reach into his pocket and pull out a coin. And this is not a fairy tale, but a true story.

This is called faith above reason. He knew that there was nothing in his pocket, but when the teacher told him to take the money out of his pocket, he had no doubt that there must be the money that the teacher was talking about because this is a different degree of reality. This is why the student put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a coin.

We cannot judge the spiritual world from the level of this world or judge this world from the level of the upper world. This is exactly the same as with young children: If you want to understand why the baby is crying, what his grief is, then you need to go down to his level and enter into his state. Then we will know what he feels, what he sees, and why he cries. We cannot understand the cause from the height of our level, but only see the effect.

The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us how to dress in the state of the upper and then be able to reveal it, understand and feel where we get all the orders that govern us. So now, when I tell you about this gold coin, about the spiritual state that we have to reveal, can you follow the teacher with faith above knowledge and pull the gold out of your pocket?

I tell you that you are at the end of correction—this is the true state immediately created at the creation of the world, only you do not feel it! But in fact, our condition is perfect, so put your hand in your pocket and pull out the final correction!

A teacher in Kabbalah is a guide on the spiritual path and you should follow him with your eyes shut.
