How Can You Check If You Are in Lo Lishma?

263Question: How can you check if you are in a state of Lo Lishma from which we come to Lishma?

Answer: Lo Lishma means that a person strives for the truth. He has heard and theoretically has an idea of what it is, but at the same time, he is still in the intention to receive for his own sake.

If we measure Lo Lishma on a scale from 0 to 100%, in a case of a friend who borrowed $1,000 from me, then 0% Lo Lishma is when a friend is obliged to repay the $1,000 to me.

1% Lo Lishma is when he returns $999 to me and I accept it as a repayment of the entire $1,000. And 100% Lo Lishma is when he gives me back $0, an empty envelope. I check it with my senses, I see that there is nothing there, and I accept it as a debt repaid in full. That is, it shows how much I can go above my desires to receive.

But of course, all this progress is possible only due to the influence of the surrounding light. When we move from Lo Lishma to Lishma, the direct light begins to act.

Baal HaSulam gives such a definition of Lo Lishma in the article “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Item 12: Indeed, practicing Torah and Mitzvot Lo Lishma means that one believes in the Creator, in the Torah, and in reward and punishment, and engages in the Torah because the Creator commanded the engagement, but associates his own pleasure with bringing contentment to his Maker.

There Is No Reason To Be Sick!

49.01Comment: Before each congress you usually were ill, generally with respiratory diseases. In fact many would be ill. Now there is a period when this passes us by.

My Response: Because we have reached another stage where we agree with unification, dissemination, and expansion and where we have come into good contact with an external force and wish it to become our internal one. We have already passed the stage of opposition.

And since I absorb everything from others, that is why I would get sick. But now the stage of alienation has ended, connection has begun, and not resistance to this and resistance to me. People are more agreeable, more compliant, more attracted, and willing to attain the spiritual in connection with each other. Therefore, there is no cause to get sick! There is no reason.

Question: So, that opposition affected the physiology in this way?

Answer: Of course! This is reflected at the whole level from top to bottom at all levels.

Question: Why did you have to suffer for everyone?

Answer: If I give to everyone, then feedback also passes through me both from top to bottom and from bottom to top.

Spiritual Transmission Link

961.2Question: You have a certain function, you are a link of spiritual transmission. What if this physical connection between you and your students is interrupted? You are a link they cannot do without.

Answer: There is no such thing as “cannot.” It will happen! The main thing is the connection between you. If you have the right connection between you, you will continue everything correctly and well. The main thing for me is to lead you to this.

I don’t think there will be any one person who will lead the World Academy of Kabbalah or the World Academy of Integral Connection, Upbringing, and Education. This function will be assumed by the spiritual, physical board of directors.

If you stay together, you will always find the correct step forward in the right connection between you. And I will always be with you, just a little hidden.

Of course, it is easier for one person to direct because he is a student of Rabash, thus he knows more and so on. So you have to force the friends who make up the board of directors to be correctly united, then, from this connection they will draw everything they need for the ensuing right path: reason, desire, and direction. Then you can listen to them.

In no way should you go against it! I stand behind them covertly, just as I am now in contact with Rabash. And although, sooner or later, I will disappear from your eyes, I will still remain in touch with you through these ten people, just as Rabash is in touch with me, and through me, in fact, in touch with you.

Question: Why is it that when you remember Rabash, you are overcome with emotion?

Answer: Because I’m talking about the person most dear to me. It’s natural.

Comment: But if you are in connection with him, you should not be emotional.

My Response: How so? What if I am next to him, and suddenly I’m overcome with emotion? This is no different, it doesn’t matter where you are.

If You Unite

588.03Question: You once said: “If you unite, I will be able to explain more.” Do you own the information and you need a formed desire toward which you give this information?

Answer: We need desires that will be at the level of what I want to explain. If there are no such desires, then the explanation will not work.

Let’s say you are sitting in front of a group of students. They ask you some questions, and at the level of these questions, you have to explain everything to them. You can’t give them an answer a few courses higher—they won’t understand it and it will only confuse them.

Therefore everything goes only according to the plan that my students dictate to me. Sometimes I get a little ahead of events in order to prepare them for the next degrees.

Question: If an external person listens to the information that you give us and which is clear to us, will he somehow understand or will he not hear it at all?

Answer: He will think that I am saying something completely incomprehensible, philosophical, psychological, and generally abstract from our world.

But there are people, many people in the world, who are familiar with this information although they are not in it. Even the same Hasidim, although they do not attain what is written in their books, they know it. And so if they hear me, they will say, “Yes, he says what is written in our books.” After all, the founders of Hasidism were great Kabbalists.

Thanks to the Revelations of Baal HaSulam

917.01How many people around the world today are in genuine fear and a sense of helplessness? They do not find any justification for their suffering, they do not know what to do, or how to feed themselves tomorrow or in a few months. Some worry about what will happen to their billions, while others do not know how to live when their last pennies run out.

Everyone suffers in their own way, but no one understands how to continue to exist. And we suddenly received such a gift from above that we can look at this world with a human gaze, and not as small and unhappy, beaten animals. And all this is thanks to the revelations of Baal HaSulam that have reached us and through his soul, and Rabash was a transitional adapter between us and Baal HaSulam.

Baal HaSulam was conduit of the light from the world of infinity to us through his perfect soul, which had reached its final correction. But he asked to lower himself, because otherwise, he could not connect with people. And only after he was lowered by many degrees, he was able to write The Study of the Ten Sefirot and The Introduction to The Book of Zohar. We do not understand the degree that he had before, the greatest height, from where he could not even tell anything in words.

Which means, it was at the degree of the GAR of the world of Atzilut and above, where the light is not clothed in desires. From there, he could not address the person and be heard, and therefore, he asked to lower himself. And in fact, he fulfilled his mission, which the Creator expected from him, knowing that he would ask for it and fulfill it.

And we are at an intermediate degree between Rabash, Baal HaSulam, and humanity. On the one hand, we need to rise up to understand what Baal HaSulam said. On the other hand, we need to go down to the people and understand what they need from us and in what form they will be able to accept our message. We need to reach both of these poles, above and below.

Baal HaSulam and Rabash spoke from above. And we are at the bottom, below the Parsa, in order to be able to touch and awaken the world, and then, together with all mankind, to ascend through the Machsom and connect to the upper Malchut. This is our mission.

Invisible Changes

206Question: It is very hard to identify real changes. On one hand, all levels of nature are changing. On the other hand, there is a possibility that a static state is hiding behind this tricky picture. Let’s say the sun has risen, so what has changed? It rises and sets each day. What really is a change?

Answer: If we take a global look at the picture of the world, we will see that the world is moving to greater balance. And this is perhaps the most certain and probable cause for its development. Nature seeks balance. It comes from the law that nature does not tolerate emptiness.

Question: From the standpoint of laws it is clear and logical. However, from the standpoint of sensations it seems that an ordinary inhabitant of planet Earth does not see it this way. Is it correct to say that for him changes form an absolute chaos that is constantly growing?

Answer: Of course. He also does not see that he lives on a little ball that is constantly spinning and with such a great speed.

He does not feel it. An ordinary inhabitant of Earth senses only what he can feel in his organism while standing on this Earth that is spinning along with the entire Universe.

In general, we know little and feel little. We cannot break away from the point where we exist. This is why it seems to us that we exist in relative calm.

Absolute Devotion to the Teacher

721.03Question: Baal HaSulam kept his disciples at a certain level. And when he died, they fell. How did you manage not to fall when Rabash died?

Answer: I was connected with him internally. I just stuck to him and was by his side all the time.

After his death, I got up every morning and mentally talked with him. I talked to him in a dream. While doing something, I thought: “If I tell him, how will he react to this?”

Very often I broke away from some activity, jumped up and looked at the clock: “Oh, I’m late, I have to run to him!” But he was gone. Or I woke up in the middle of the night with the same thoughts, as if I should go to him.

And these were terrible shocks: “Oh, I’m late!” on the one hand, and on the other hand, immediately the second blow, there is nowhere to run. There is nothing to compare with twelve years of being next to a person who was like a spring of life for you. Nothing.

But for this you need to reach absolute devotion during your lifetime. And it does not just depend on the person: “I want!” It comes with great difficulty and I would say luck. There was an element of luck here.

“The Legacy of a Giant” (Linkedin)

My new article on Linkedin “The Legacy of a Giant

Today, October 7, sixty-eight years ago, Rav Yehuda Ashlag, the greatest kabbalist and thinker of our time, and one of the greatest of all time, passed away. He became known as Baal HaSulam (author of the Sulam [ladder]) after his Sulam commentary on The Book of Zohar. He lived through both world wars, predicted them well in advance, and warned his fellow Jews in Poland that a calamity awaits them long before the Holocaust. He wrote about it, talked about it, and organized the escape of hundreds of families from Poland to what was then Palestine and later became the State of Israel. His efforts were thwarted. The families were intimidated into staying in Poland, and his writings were banned.

Subsequently, Baal HaSulam moved to Palestine on his own and toiled just as diligently to spread the message of unity among Jews and unity throughout the world. Yet, in Palestine, too, his writings were banned and he was threatened that he would be imprisoned if he continued to spread his ideas.

Fortunately, many of his writings survived so we can learn of his greatness and realize his message. Today, it is imperative that we understand his legacy and realize his teaching because, among other things, he detailed how we can avoid a third, nuclear world war.

In the latter years of his life, Baal HaSulam dedicated his time to writing his monumental commentary on The Book of Zohar, the only complete commentary since the writing of The Zohar nearly two millennia ago. In the years prior to his work on The Zohar, he divided his time between writing a comprehensive commentary on the writings of the ARI, which became known as The Study of the Ten Sefirot, and writing essays on contemporary events and processes that shaped the world’s history.

In the 1930s, long before people spoke of globalization or the interconnectedness of nations, Baal HaSulam wrote a series of essays warning against exploitation because we are dependent on each other. Two essays in particular, “The Peace” and “Peace in the World,” analyzed the state of humanity, where it was headed, and what needed to be done.

In June 1940, he published a paper which he sold on the street like a regular newspaper. It contained opinion pieces in which he analyzed the situation in the world in view of the world war that was raging in Europe and elsewhere, and outlined the peril that awaited Polish Jewry. Alas, it was too late to save them. Had they listened to him in the 1920s, things would probably have been very different.

In the 1950s, shortly before his passing, he wrote what he predicted for the world, but never managed to publish it. He hoped that now that the world had seen the horrors of nuclear weapons, people would be willing to rise above their ego and unite. He also warned that if they did not, humanity would plunge into a third, and even fourth world war, both of which would be nuclear, and the relics would still have to rise above their ego and unite in order to put an end to hatred and war.

Baal HaSulam’s legacy is his efforts to help humanity unite. Today we see how essential it is that we understand his message of unity and spread it, as it is the only message that can prevent a third world war.

Kabbalists have always been ahead of their time. Baal HaSulam’s predecessors, too, were misunderstood during their lifetime. It is my hope that we understand the message of Baal HaSulam not centuries after his passing, but now, while there is still time to avoid a global tragedy.

For the writings of Baal HaSulam (not including The Book of Zohar and The Study of the Ten Sefirot), read The Writings of Baal HaSulam, Vol. 1, and Vol. 2.

To learn more about the travails of kabbalists and resistance to their message throughout the ages, read A Very Narrow Bridge: The fate of the Jewish people.

Imperative Link in the Chain

962.5Without Rabash’s articles, we would not know how to properly attune ourselves to the goal and to connect with Baal HaSulam who gives us academic advice from a great spiritual height.

We are not able to extract the details for our connection from there in order to take even one step in practically implementing it. Rabash starts right from the beginning and explains every step to us. After that we can better understand and implement Baal HaSulam’s methodology.

When we come to the direct realization of Kabbalah, the practice of revealing the Creator, the articles of Rabash and The Book of Zohar become essential for us.

Rabash’s articles help us form the right intention and The Book of Zohar helps us attract the light that reveals the spiritual world to this intention. Rabash did something that no Kabbalist had done before him; he described all the stages of a person’s inner work, the practical implementation of the Torah.

He was the only one in the entire chain of Kabbalists starting from Adam HaRishon who gave a concrete step-by-step explanation of the work of a person and a group, which is so necessary today.

Before him, Kabbalists wrote about their individual attainments because this was the spiritual progress in the era of 2,000 years of concealment and exile from the spiritual.

Before going into exile, people were in spiritual attainment and there was no need to talk about something that each child mastered as he grew.

But today, in order to rise from concealment, we need materials that would orient us to enter the spiritual world and it is possible only by studying Rabash’s articles.

Without Rabash’s articles, we would not have been able to correctly understand other Kabbalistic sources.

Therefore, our work is divided into two parts.

1. Study of Rabash’s articles.

2. If we attune ourselves correctly, then we turn to The Book of Zohar or The Study of the Ten Sefirot and can already work with them correctly as we attract the correcting light.

Rabash was very discreet and modest and always kept in the shadow of his great father. All his strength and might were hidden deep inside, so it was impossible to see anything from the outside.

He was the first to teach Kabbalah to non-religious people without any distinction in origin and he considered it very important to disseminate Kabbalah widely.

Following the Spiritual Line of the Teacher

115Baal HaSulam had students whom he was holding at a spiritual degree. When he died, they fell from it. The same can be true for our students. Now they are at a certain degree, but when I will cease to exist…I do not even want to think how this can continue.

Naturally, the force that holds them will fall and they will not be able to maintain contact with me in the spiritual space. They will fall. This is the case with all Kabbalists and their students.

Comment: But you have students who have been studying with you for fifteen or twenty years.

My Response: It does not depend on time. To do this, one must be infinitely devoted to the teacher. Therefore, people prefer the son to take the place of his father. After all, a son, as a rule, does not go against the father. He follows him, and does not want to harm his father because from the point of view of egoism, this is also his possession.

Any other person, however, envies, thinks about himself, instinctively wants to exalt himself at your expense. This is what we need to overcome. This is how we are created, nothing can be done about this. But at the same time, therein lies the problem. It takes a lot of time and effort, until the student overcomes his “I” and merges with the teacher inside the teacher, only a few are capable of this.

The rest, however, are also advancing, it does not matter, each person performs his own function. But someone manages to follow the spiritual line after the teacher, someone else does not.

Rabash did it with Baal HaSulam. Nobody else succeeded in that. Nobody! I spoke with eyewitnesses, they said: “After Baal HaSulam died, all his disciples, except for Rabash…” Of course, they did something: they met, studied, taught others, but it was clear that all this was, what is called, ordinary courses for the general population.

The same is true about times after Rabash. I stepped aside, I did not want to deal with anyone. Then I was pulled into one group, there were only five or six people who forcibly made me their teacher, I did not want this. It is not that I did not know how, but I had to give up what I had and would ruin myself.

In general, everything is arranged from heaven. Then it turned out that gradually students began to gather who wanted me to teach them at least once a week. It probably was just the fact that the time had come.
