Leave the Child Alone

272Question: What is the purpose of the whole huge system of upbringing and education?

Answer: It is spinning around us on its own, and that is all. We cannot do anything about it. You cannot instill anything into a child, just the surrounding, friends, and educators to some extent as well, can. All of this creates the child’s inner world who then enters life. And going forward he already begins to take from life.

Question: What is upbringing in your opinion? You have pushed the education part back a bit.

Answer: First of all, education and upbringing are not the same thing. Education is a filling of a child with all sorts of knowledge. Whereas, upbringing is an example from an adult to a child about how to behave in various situations.

Question: Is an adult an educator, a parent, the environment, and so forth?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Then it turns out that the correct upbringing is to submerge a child in an environment that gives the correct examples. What examples should we show to a child so this child would grow correctly and would be receiving the correct upbringing?

Answer: It is impossible to say. The child himself selects these examples and assimilates them.

Question: I show an example to him, but perhaps he takes from it something of his own from it, something only he understands?

Answer: Yes.

Question: How can I penetrate this world of a child?

Answer: There is no need to! There is no way to! Let him develop independently.

Comment: But I have to somehow direct him.

My Response: I think it is not so necessary. Let him run around the yard and interact with his peers, and he will develop this way.

Question: Is the child supposed to have an ideal surrounding so he would grow up within it?

Answer: Children and animals.

Question: So there are children and animals around, but where is the place for an adult?

Answer: There is no place for an adult there. Adults will impose all sorts of behavioral rules on children. There is no need for this. Gradually a child will grow and he will discover these rules for himself.

Question: Shouldn’t an adult intervene in children’s conflicts?

Answer: No, I think there is no place for educators here.

Question: Then what will grow from the child if you say he is surrounded by children, animals, and nature?

Answer: According to his inner world he absorbs everything that is possible to receive from the world.

Comment: There is drawing, dancing, and nature studies. It happens that the adult comes and says “Let me teach the child these things.”

My Response: There is no need to! He will learn by himself. All these disciplines imposed on him just limit him.

Question: I am talking about simple disciplines like dancing and  drawing. Will he master even this?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can we draw any conclusions?

Answer: The conclusion is very simple: Leave the children alone, leave them free of your great thoughts and instructions, pedagogy, and everything, everything that is in you.

Question: Then what about parents? Parents and adults still exist. How should parents properly bring up their children?

Answer: After many hundreds of generations, I do not see in any generation that some generation has taken something useful and good from their parents, and achieved something useful and good. Every time we just relearn.

Question: So you learn from your own mistakes, you learn from your life, you learn everything by yourself. And you say that we should leave a person with this “yourself,” leave him to go his own way?

Answer: Yes, I hope that we will come to such a state when we understand how we should treat children in general. I hope this will be understood and realized in the near future.

That Which Gives Us Life

926.01Question: It is clear that rain is a blessing for the earth, and so on. But what meaning does the word “rain” have? What does it mean for a person?

Answer: The word “rain” contains the foundation, the root, the beginning, of all corporeal life. Because rain is essentially a blessing that descends from the heavens to the earth. It symbolizes the benevolent attitude of the Creator toward His creations.

Question: Please tell me, in a person’s inner, spiritual work, what does it mean for rain to be sent? What does that signify?

Answer: Rain is a great, benevolent spiritual blessing that descends from above and manifests in our corporeal world in the form of rain, water coming down from above.

Question: What is this great blessing for my heart, for my soul?

Answer: It is what sustains us; it is what gives us life.

Question: Rain specifically?

Answer: Yes, water specifically. It also refers to spiritual water: the upper waters and the lower waters. It is the force of nature, the Creator’s goodness toward us that descends and is expressed in a corporeal way through His actions upon us.

Question: When a person says: “My soul has died, I am dry inside, everything in me has dried up,” is that a request for rain?

Answer: Yes, that state can be frightening. Just as we are immersed in water in our mother’s womb and come out with the waters. These things are not simple.

Question: So practically, do we ask for rain whenever we feel bad?

Answer: Yes. Rain, water, means Rachamim, mercy. And that is why we ask for it.

How to Avoid Falling into a Ditch on Life’s Twists and Turns

760.4Question: How can one learn to accept all the twists of fate? It says here: “Accept all the turns of fate. It is a playful picture” and so on and so forth. How can one learn that? Nowadays fate takes sharp turns.

Answer: You need to perceive all of this with a certain excitement, as a game. When your opponent makes a move on the chessboard or plays a new card on the table, you begin to see your next move. You should rejoice that you are in connection with such a “player.” And you wish, through this connection with him, to reveal the Creator.

Question: So then, each of my responding moves, that is the adventure? My inner one. And all my thoughts are “how and what?”

Answer: Yes.

Question: And then you said the phrase: “You find yourself in connection with the Creator.” Even if that thought does not actually exist within me, it is precisely that which leads to such a journey through life?

Answer: Yes, that is what you wish to attain.

A Person Can Endure Everything

508.1Question: You have said more than once that a person is given only what they can endure. What do you mean by this? We see that people are given things they cannot endure. Or can they still endure it?

Answer: They can. What is it that people cannot endure? It only seems to us that they cannot withstand something or cannot survive it. No, a person survives everything, bears everything, and can work on themselves to such an extent that no other creature could withstand such things.

Question: What does to endure mean? Does it mean to agree with this blow? What does it mean to come out of it?

Answer: Even to agree, even to understand, to realize, and to go through it is called coming out of a descent.

Question: What should a person’s guiding principle in life based on this be?

Answer: The principle of life must be very simple: instead of feeling myself, I must feel others; I must live not within myself, but within others. That is it. Essentially, this leads to the correct result.

Question: So, are you saying that if I close within myself, then a descent is inevitable? But if I am always open toward others and live for them, then I quickly come out of these states.

Answer: Yes.

Question: Why are descents given?

Answer: A descent is given in order to empty a person from the past, so that they will be ready to be filled with the future. Each descent and each ascent is an inner renewal of a person.

Question: Until when can a person be renewed? What peak must they reach?

Answer: It is until one completely renews oneself. This is a state where one returns to the root of one’s soul. And from that point on, one no longer needs to change internally, as it were.

Question: Do they return to their permanent place?

Answer: They return to their place, to their original point in the soul of Adam.

Question: “The soul of Adam,” do you mean that it is one single soul?

Answer: Yes, a person returns to their point in this soul. Every human being must go through this path of ascents and descents in order to return to that point. We cannot escape it.

Question: Do we know this point in advance? Do we know where we are heading?

Answer: We cannot know it because we cannot yet feel it.

Question: At what moment do I begin to feel it?

Answer: To the extent that you truly draw closer to it.

Question: Why is it given to us not to feel it?

Answer: Because we do not yet have the qualities of bestowal, love, and connection with others, with other souls, and so on.

Question: Am I moving toward that very connection that will unite us into a single whole? Is that where I’m going?

Answer: Yes, therefore, the commandment, the main condition, is: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Nature Will Not Leave Us Alone

272Question: You said that Nature, with a capital “N,” is equivalent to the concept of the Creator. The Gematria (numerical value) of these two Hebrew words is the same. So, we are talking about the Creator, right?

Answer: Yes.

Comment: And you say, if we are good with the Creator, then He will be good with us.

My Response: Naturally. Fulfill His commandments, and you will see how He relates to you in the very same way! The commandments are the laws of Nature.

The laws of Nature are not physics, mathematics, and so on, what we know from science. The laws of Nature relate to the level of a person’s attitude toward the world: how people relate to each other, how a person relates to the still, vegetative, and animate nature, how one relates to the universe, to everything. That is what is meant by a person’s attitude toward the Creator.

In general, this should simply be love, a correct and heartfelt attitude toward everything outside of you.

Comment: So, I already have love for myself, there is no getting away from that.

My Response: That is your egoism.

Question: And love for others, for what is outside of me, are you saying that it doesn’t exist?

Answer: No, of course not.

Question: Or maybe it is insufficient?

Answer: No! It does not exist at all.

Question: How can one come out of oneself and love something around? Are there any steps a person must take? We’re basically talking now about how to resist or stop this war that Nature has declared on us. If possible, please give some concrete advice. How can one come out of oneself and love something outside of myself?

Answer: That’s exactly what “Love your neighbor as yourself” means. That is the main and general commandment of the entire Torah.

Question: When you say “neighbor,” do you mean another person?

Answer: In general, it refers to everything around you. You must develop this love within yourself and start giving it. Not just rationally “love this one a bit more, that one a bit less,” and so on. Love! To love means that your heart tells you how to relate.

Comment: That is exactly the problem. We don’t really understand what it means to love with the heart.

My Response: You have to work on it. It is not like flipping a switch. It is an entire process to love someone outside of yourself.

Question: What does it mean to love?

Answer: To love means to relate to another as to yourself. What could be simpler?

Comment: That’s true. And we can’t make that step.

My Response: No, we don’t even understand how.

Question: So how can we do it then?

Answer: I don’t know. Maybe we should first watch some movie about how a person loves themselves so I can learn from that how I should love others.

Question: Do you mean to copy it?

Answer: Yes. Show me, in some film, how I love myself without any filters. And from that, I will see how I should love others, so that I will always have this example in front of me.

Comment: So, I’m constantly living wanting to receive something sweet, good, warm, kind, heartfelt, that is how I want others to treat me.

My Response: Mainly, you always want to be right.

Question: Do I suddenly have to give that away and say, “You’re right”?

Answer: Yes.

Question: That is serious work. Will Nature calm down then?

Answer: Of course, it will! Because you, the main initiator of all this negativity, will simply remove yourself from the picture. Nature corrects us and leads us precisely to this realization.

Question: Is Nature really like that?

Answer: Yes. Nature responds to us. It gave the world, this Earth, into human hands: “Do as you wish.”

Comment: But in essence, Nature itself is giving, bestowing.

My Response: It is giving and bestowing to the extent that you are giving and bestowing.

Comment: So, you’re putting an equal sign here, if I become like it, everything will be fine.

My Response: A person must come to equivalence with the Creator. That is why Nature will not yield on this.

Question: So, in short, we must correspond to the Creator, is that it?

Answer: Yes. What else?

Question: Only how can we actually do it! Will Nature not calm down until we reach this?

Answer: No! That is exactly what is written: “Rise to the level of the Creator.”

Comment: Understood. But you know, seismologists are already predicting that this won’t stop, that it will keep shaking, shaking, and shaking. Something is happening with the Earth’s core. I won’t go into technical details, but they say more and more places will open up where it will shake seriously. That’s what they’re saying.

My Response: The Creator seems to be playing with our Earth like with a ball.

Question: So, will this continue, as you say, until we make this decision and begin to move toward the Creator?

Answer: Yes.

Question: We just have to make the decision? Is that all that is required of us?

Answer: To agree! To accept means to agree. It is not like at a meeting where they reach a unanimous decision, and then everyone goes home. Here, there must be unanimous agreement among all people to live by the principle “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Question: Can we say that all 613 or 620 commandments are included in this one?

Answer: Of course.

Then Happiness Will Follow You

443Question: Do we need to seek out happiness or not? Or is it also in the hands of the Creator?

Answer: I do not think it is possible to find it. I do not think happiness can be found. Happiness must be created. That is, you need to put yourself in a state where you know exactly how to force it to be revealed, then you will see it.

Question: A very important question is: “What do you mean by the word ‘happiness’ when you say it now?”

Answer: By happiness I mean a feeling that one’s life has been a success.

Question: Does one have such a feeling toward the end of his life, or throughout his life: ”I am living the right life; my life is a success”? How is it?

Answer: No, I think it happens toward the end.

Question: So is it always a work in progress? Does it follow that our life is a constant work in progress?

Answer: Yes, it is when a person is still looking for more and more, to rebuild his life over and over again so that it brings the happiness one envisions. Let us say that ii is making people happy, making his family happy, whatever a person can imagine.

Question: So are you now directing the vector “away from me”—to make others happy. This is what you keep talking about. Is this how I discover the meaning of life? So in a way, do I come to the conclusion that this is what brings me happiness?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this constant work?

Answer: It is a constant job that can never stop. And a person should clearly understand how to do this.

Comment: But along the way, one gets disappointed, climbs up again, and so on.

My Response: I do not know about getting disappointed. He just has to imagine his path. And then “the traveler will master the path.”

Comment: That is, in order for happiness to follow you, it does not mean that you are happy; you have to work all the time to make others happy. And it is not easy, as we understand it.

My Response: It does not matter that it is not easy. Is anything easy in life? Nothing is easy.

Question: But is this the path? This particular path?

Answer: Yes.

Question: When you say “the path of light” and “the path of darkness,” what do you mean by that?

Answer: The path of light is when you bring light to people. And the path of darkness is when you cannot do it.

Question: Cannot or will not?

Answer: I believe that “cannot” and “will not” are the same.

The Debt Will Have to Be Repaid

707A person must understand that they live in a world in which they have no right to anything at all. And if they take something, consume it for themselves for their own sake, then they must pay for it, give it back, repay it, and so on.

Question: And the fact that we break everything, kill, does all that come back to a person like a boomerang? What do you think?

Answer: We will have to pay for all of that on a global scale.

Comment: Remember, Rabbi Akiva said that “the book is open, the hand writes,” and you borrow, as it were, and later you must repay all of it.

My Response: You will have to.

Question: Is that what this is about?

Answer: Yes.

Question: And is it normal to take only what is necessary for survival?

Answer: Only for survival, and if you take only for survival, then you will be able to give it back.

Comment: And it is so, blessed be it.

My Response: Relatively. It is a very complicated matter. After all, nature is closed, integral, perfect. And therefore, our existence within it, in nature, requires that we be really careful and completely dedicated.

Question: How, then, can we achieve harmony with nature?

Answer: Only if we manage to unite with nature and achieve the ability to give in the same measure that we take. Then we will regulate how much to take and how much to give.

Question: But aren’t we, in principle, constantly moving toward that in one way or another?

Answer: I hope that someday we will.

Question: Why haven’t we been given the ability to understand and feel all this? We just take things from nature without concern.

Answer: But we are moving toward it. It is a development, the gradual development of nature from the inanimate onward.

Question: So we must come to the point that I cannot just take everything as I want. And certainly not kill, steal, and so on?

Answer: Of course.

What the Right Attitude toward People Should Be

163No one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them (Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning).

There is a universal law, and therefore, at any given moment, you must treat everyone as a person who has fulfilled their higher purpose.

Question: Even an enemy?

Answer: All the more so. Then you will act correctly, survive, and reach your goal.

In other words, you create it yourself through your correct attitude toward everyone—toward the enemy, toward the friend, toward all.

By doing so, you shape yourself internally, constantly correct yourself, and in this way come closer to the final goal, to the form that you must ultimately attain.

Question: Is that even possible?

Answer: This, generally speaking, is our path.

Don’t Be a Slave

600.02Comment: A person wants to dress nicely. It is in his nature.

My Response: If he is not forced to do so by external circumstances, then in his inner circumstances he can continue to live as he lived before.

Question: In an old robe?

Answer: Of course.

Comment: Then there is no progress.

My Response: Well then there will not be progress of that kind.

Comment: Now you are going somewhat against nature. Look around, everything is built on buying a house, dressing beautifully, fashion. Everything today is like that.

My Response: Everything is needed only to live comfortably for the sake of your goal so that you will not be a slave to things, a slave to time, and a slave to the environment. That is all. And all the rest of your free time, dedicate to your beloved self.

Question: So is that how one should live?

Answer: Yes, why should I work, as you say, for a robe, for a table, or for something else?

Question: What do you mean when you say “take care of yourself”?

Answer: Do what you truly want, what you consider important. What you consider important, not what the environment dictates.

Question: So your advice is to stop?

Answer: Not even to stop, but not to enter into it in the first place. Do not get involved; do not dive into it.

Question: Even if I am internally spinning and restless?

Answer: That should be the aim of such a low level of human development, the animal level of man, so that he does not get carried away into other goals or niches. Live for yourself! Even if it seems egoistic.

Comment: You just gave a very egoistic formula: live for yourself, not for others.

My Response: Choose a goal and live for it. A person must examine his path and direct and arrange it in such a way that he harms no one, including his own life. That is all.
