Do Innovations Bring Happiness?

547.05Now we are still developing in the plane of our world. But gradually we complete this development, even the development of science. It just seems to us that all sorts of nano-technologies or some other things are coming. Gradually everything will fold up. The entire world will fold up.

We see that not a single scientific achievement, not a single scientific discovery, has given us anything!

What if now we can talk at a distance?! A person did not become happier because of it. He began to stuff himself with all sorts of toys. There is nothing in the movies or on TV. We just think that these are great opportunities.

Previously, people did not have these opportunities because their egoism did not require it. Yet they were happy in their own way. Is it not so? No, only now we are happy because we have a TV and a computer. We connect to the Internet and see an infinite number of windows. And then what?! It does not bring happiness!

Only the attainment of one’s mission, eternity, perfection, and harmony gives a person happiness. This is how we are created.

We cannot replace the fulfillment of our natural desire to reach perfection and eternity with some kind of surrogate when we look at pictures on TV or on the Internet. All the same, we remain empty, we die like animals, and that is all.

I do not criticize anything because all this is specially developed by humanity in order to somehow distract themselves from problems. But in the end, it still leads to problems in a roundabout way.

Kabbalah, in principle, encourages the development of everything that a person invents, because the rapid development of these “toys” leads to disappointment.

What Is the Creator Hiding from Us?

527.01Question: All desires originate in the world of infinity, but they must manifest in our world and come to a final form. What final form should they take?

Answer: Whether we want it or not, we will have to develop to the very last, highest degree, and feel the whole universe and the Creator who fills it.

The worlds are filters descending from top to bottom and gradually increasingly concealing the upper light or the Creator from us.

Question: So, it is best to imagine them not as parallel worlds but as concealment of the connection of the Creator with creation?

Answer: Yes. In our world this connection is completely hidden from us.

The Difference Between Spiritual and Corporeal Desire

506.2Thus, the only difference between the upper worlds and this world is that as long as the will to receive incorporated in His abundance has not fully materialized, it is regarded as still being in the spiritual worlds, above this world (Baal HaSulam, “Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah,” #2).

Question: Once the desire has materialized, it already exists in this world. What is the difference between a desire in the spiritual world and the same desire that has materialized in our world?

Answer: The difference is in the desire itself, in its quality and level, that is, in what it seeks to fill everything with, either corporeal, egoistic desires, pleasures, intentions, and fulfillments or spiritual ones. This is the big difference between desires, their gradation, and their gradual separation.

Question: In our world, psychologists divide desires into five types from basic desires to desires to understand the meaning of life, “Who I am, what I am.” Are all these corporeal desires?

Answer: Yes, they all relate to corporeal desires. That is, these are the desires that a person who was born in our world, lives in our world, and feels it as a place in which he exists, can feel.

Question: But the root of these desires is in the spiritual world where they have not yet materialized. How does a person feel them? Does the same desire, let’s say for food, exist in spirituality?

Answer: If you, for example, draw some chemical formula or physical equation, this will be the expression of your desire in matter or even above matter.

Question: I am just trying to figure out what the addition is when this desire becomes spiritual. The corporeal one is clear to me, everything is clear here: you take a piece of meat, swallow it, and get some kind of pleasure through the receptors. How does this happen in spirituality?

Answer: In spirituality it also happens the same way. You take the fulfillment, immerse the desire in it, and get the feeling of fulfilling the desire.

Question: Where is the Creator in this formula? Where is He manifested in it?

Answer: He is not manifested anywhere. Only in your feelings.

Question: So is He this pleasure and abundance?

Answer: The feeling of the source of pleasure is defined as the Creator.

While enjoying a piece of meat, I do not know where this pleasure comes from. I just know that if food comes into contact with my receptors, then I feel pleasure. This is how I am arranged. Is there another source behind this in spirituality, that is, do I feel someone who gives me this additional pleasure.

How We Perceive the Single Force of Nature

709Question: Which principles of the universe should we try to fulfill first?

Answer: The principles of the universe are not meant to be fulfilled. Principles are laws of the universe: the law of the equivalence of qualities, the law of the general unity of all parts of the world, and so on. They are not intended for us to fulfill in any sequence. These are the foundations, the bricks of the universe.

Let’s say we have nature in front of us, which consists, say, of 500 elementary particles. Each particle cannot be better or worse than the others. This is all nature.

With regard to us, the only principle of nature is that it is one single force. To the extent that we understand, feel, attain, and reveal it, it is as if we decompose it into many forces, many different manifestations and principles.

Although this is one single force, we interpret it as separate principles since we cannot perceive it globally. Suppose we live in a sort of cosmos, and inside it is the construction of the world, the universe. It is one, but we cannot explore it as a single entity.

We can explore separately the attributes that we call physics, the ones called chemistry, the ones called biology, zoology, botany, geology, and so on, because today we do not have enough experience, knowledge, or development to see it all as one whole. Therefore, we divide general nature into such parts so that we can somehow talk about and explore it. We cannot take everything together.

It is the same with principles. There is only one force inside which we exist. But in order to understand it, to realize its influence on us and how it created us, and how leads us along the path of evolution, we divide its impact into personal, general, historical, and different levels, manifestations, and so on. But this is in relation to us because in this way it is easier for us to absorb it, to approach it, and to feel it.

We cannot perceive it globally. We do not have enough sensations to do this, nor the ability to process everything and evaluate this force. We cannot! This is due to our limitations in terms of processing information, in comprehending it in the general form and simultaneously in all its depths and interconnections. This is our weakness.

Therefore the only principle, which is called: “One, unique, and unified” is divided into dozens relative to us. We arbitrarily divide it for ourselves into many different principles.

The Difference Between Kabbalah and Sufism

583.04Comment: There is a principle that a student should be a rag at his teacher’s feet.

My Response: Firstly, that was not said by me. Secondly, it is not a rag, but “ashes at the teacher’s feet,” that is, dust.

I remember meeting in England with a great Sufi of the world, an Iranian, a very wise old man. He told me: “If you want to be my disciple, you must come here and serve me completely. So that you love me as you love yourself.”

This is absolutely true! Sufis have the same system as Kabbalah. In principle, it comes from the same source, from Abraham. Therefore Sufis have been engaged in spiritual things for centuries.

Question: Why does Sufism not provide a method of correction?

Answer: Because it does not have three lines of development.

Sufism cannot develop through egoism since only the right line predominates in it. It seems to exist in the same plane. The left line cannot develop at all and attain the spiritual world even a little because it is a single egoism.

Kabbalah is the middle line, which uses both forces, right and left. Therefore a person can grow. We see what state of continuous inner evolution we are in.

Question: Is there any danger that the Kabbalistic method may descend to the lowest trifles?

Answer: No, the Kabbalistic method does not descend. It becomes common, popular, and universal! It comes out of its hiding place and is revealed to everyone!

Who Needs Your Principles?

284Question: You say that everyone needs to know the principles of the universe. Why? At school, for example, children are taught a variety of subjects. But why would the majority study physics or chemistry, for example, if they will not be useful to them in the future?

Answer: These subjects are necessary for general education. Without them, a person cannot think normally. He has to hear and forget a lot of things in order to form some kind of attitude to the world. Subconsciously it still works inside and correctly adjusts a person to the environment.

For example, I don’t remember anything from school and institute chemistry. But I have some feelings about the chemical approach to the world. This should remain from education.

Comment: But during the school years, the child’s world is built. I remember how we were told about evolution, history, about many things, and then you find out that it’s not like that at all. And it’s like your consciousness is collapsing.

My Response: Nothing is collapsing. Humanity is moving forward in this way. What seemed unshakable yesterday is being tested today, tomorrow it turns out to be a lie, and the day after tomorrow a supposedly new truth appears, which in turn becomes a lie in a couple of days.

What Is a Book?

525Question: What is a book?

Answer: A book in Kabbalah is something that externally looks like a scroll or an image of some letters. This image can be on clay, metal, or any other materials like parchment, papyrus, it doesn’t matter what.

In the inner sense, a book is an adapter, converter, connector, and conductor between us. In each of us, there is an internal system called the soul. Through my external, corporeal system, visual or auditory, I come into contact with some means of connecting me to another system—an external one.

That is, my soul is connected through the book to an external system called the common soul.

This is not just a book, but a complete system made by a certain person or a group of people so that I could connect my soul to the common soul, to the common system of governance. This is not possible without a book.

Miracles or Laws of Nature?

49.01Question: Why do you simplify Kabbalah? People know that Kabbalists have some paranormal abilities, and this attracts them.

Answer: There are no paranormal phenomena. Why do you always look for some tricks or miracles? None of it exists in nature! We are talking about its laws.

You want to say: “There are some laws of nature that we do not know about. If you show them to us, we will be very surprised.” It is like showing a light bulb to a caveman, he will blow on it thinking it is fire. Or if he sees a self-opening door, he will kneel before it believing the holy spirit opens and closes it.

But these are laws of nature! There is nothing else! There are only things we do not know, which may look like a miracle at first. The iron bird is flying in the air! You can only fall to your knees and pray. But in reality? It is the same for everything!

Materialization of Desires

213Comment: In the article “Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah,” Baal HaSulam writes that the entire will to receive materializes, and this place is called “our world.”

The will to receive itself is called “man’s body” (in Hebrew, Guf), and the “abundance” (Shefa) received by it is called the measure of “vitality in that body.”

My Response: Yes, everything consists of a bigger or a smaller desire, which depends on how it is fulfilled and what it eventually feels. This is life.

Question: What does it mean that desire materializes?

Answer: It feels that it exists and can express itself through other desires and include them in itself. It gives it a sense of existence.

Inside the World Building

568.01Question: Can you give an example of the implementation of one of the universe’s principles, for example, revealing the point of freewill?

Answer: No, the principles themselves do not give us a clear plan for their implementation. Implementation occurs by applying the methodology itself, which gradually explains how to act using these principles in various conditions. There is no such thing as applying one principle without using the others.

It is not that you do not use them, you cannot launch them according to your desire. After all, you are inside nature, and these principles are your shell. You exist within them, and they all affect you.

Just to understand where you are, we are talking about the universe, what this building in which I exist consists of. But I exist inside all of it; there are walls, a ceiling, and a floor, some furnishings, some conditions, and air, absolutely everything. However, I am told bit by bit about where I am because I cannot grasp everything at once. Then, gradually, when I work with these principles, everything will come together in one picture.

When I live just in this world, I generally perceive it with all my senses: smells, sounds, visual images, tactile and taste sensations. All together I perceive it as an image of the present moment. But I can deconstruct it and say: “This device perceives sight, this one hearing, and this one something else.”

Then all this is collected inside me and compared with the pictures that are in my memory archive. And what happens next? How do I understand these images that I perceive now; how do I adapt to and work with them? This is what needs to be explained to the person.

The correct picture of the universe practically leads him to the need to change and become similar to it.

If I am in some kind of environment that is higher than me, this is world structure for me. If I am like it, I will know where I am and how I can interact with this building of the world, and then I will bring myself to a comfortable state.
