The Zohar—A Tool For Working On Yourself

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: One reads The Book of Zohar as a fairy tale; for another, it is not important to understand, but to get feelings from it. How does one not turn The Zohar into a book for meditation, but make it a tool for working on oneself?

Answer: First of all, you need to read this book with others. Preferably, do it in groups of ten, not mixed, but separate men’s tens and women’s tens.

The essence of The Book of Zohar is not its literal translation and meaning. If we organize ourselves correctly and listen to it in any language, even one we do not understand, this book will affect us. In fact, it represents a bridge between the spiritual world and our points in the heart that yearn to attain it.

The Book of Zohar performs the function of a tube through which the Light from the upper world passes into our heart, into the heart’s point that asks about the meaning of life. This point starts to grow and we gradually better understand what the meaning of existence actually is. It is continuous work on ourselves, but we have time. Why is this life given to us? To understand why it is given to us.

I see in my students, how The Book of Zohar influences them and they start to feel the internal taste of it, which in Hebrew is called “Han de Kedusha” (the charm of the upper illumination). Though it is not clear, we explicitly feel that this book carries something in it that expands our feelings. And although we do not know what it is filling with, something is happening. This is the gradual influence of The Book of Zohar on a person.

Later on, our desires, feelings, and various inner instruments will become more suited for the study of The Book of Zohar and we will perceive the results from reading it very clearly.

Study does not consist of becoming familiar with the text of The Book of Zohar and acquiring knowledge about the wisdom of Kabbalah. Its study is the entry of the upper Light inside us through the tube, which is The Book of Zohar, and then the Light develops new sensations in us through which we start to feel the upper world.

Question: When I read the book, Delicious and Healthy Recipes, I start to salivate, meaning that I feel pleasure. Can we say this about The Book of Zohar, that it loves my soul, but I don’t feel it because I don’t have these tastes yet?

Answer: I would say that it is much better because when reading that recipe book, a person thinks  about whether he or she will ever taste this food. By studying The Book of Zohar, a person starts to evoke the influence of the upper Light on oneself right away. By influencing you, the upper Light builds new desires and possibilities in you. The desires that are inherently built in us get uncovered during the reading of The Book of Zohar and we start to reach for it.

Book Written On The Heart

laitman_602_01Question: Why did many great Kabbalists not write any books at all?

Answer: There usually are two types of Kabbalists according to the nature of their soul: souls from the Inner Light or from the Surrounding Light.

For example, Rabbi Shimon didn’t write The Book of Zohar by himself but through his disciple Rabbi Aba who could disclose the words of Rabbi Shimon in such a way that throughout generations only those who were ready for it understood it.

Look what secrets are hidden in the writing of Kabbalistic books where a Kabbalist writes and knows that some person will appear in two thousand years who will be permitted to understand this text, and only to a certain place and no more.

Question: How did Kabbalists manage to write such books?

Answer: The thing is that we all are in one upper system that is called First Man, – Adam HaRishon, Adam, one soul, and a Kabbalist can control this system. And we are his spiritual offspring; therefore, he can determine everything for us. The one who goes in front determines the path of the following generations.

A Kabbalist doesn’t just record the text of the book, but creates crosspieces in the system of the common soul. Thus, he establishes the channels for the transmission of the upper Light for all future souls that are yet to be revealed, which will flow to them and fill them.

This is what is called writing a Kabbalistic book, as it is written, “Write on your heart.” The text on paper is just symbols through which we can connect with the book according to our desire.

If you see a book that you absolutely can’t understand, but you want very much to understand it, then your desire reaches the inner mechanism of creation through the letters and you connect to the source of the Light that begins influencing you.

Question: Will I feel what is happening to me?

Answer: Definitely! The inner screen will appear in you, on which you will see the entire spiritual world. Everything written in the book will appear before you as if on a theatrical stage.

Pleasure From The Book Of Zohar

Laitman_630.1Question: Does a Kabbalist feel pleasure while reading The Book of Zohar?

Answer: It is a tremendous pleasure, because when a Kabbalist reads The Book of Zohar and discovers its meaning, he sees how all the parts of the creation connect above all the differences. The greatest pleasure is when all the parts that seem totally incompatible suddenly become compatible to each other, connect, and merge into one.

Question: Can it be compared to an ordinary person who reads a novel or an adventure book and finds great pleasure in it?

Answer: Yes. After all, as children we received very vivid impressions from reading books, but the pleasure from The Book of Zohar is much more sublime.

Today, when it is already impossible to surprise and to fill us with anything, The Book of Zohar can absolutely fill us. It all depends on its effect on a person.

The Book Of Zohar—The Heart Understands

laitman_527.07Question: One of the principles of studying The Book of Zohar is that the heart understands. What does that mean?

Answer: When we read The Book of Zohar we accept the condition that The Book acts only our feelings but not on our mind, which is a pure product of our world.

Feelings can resemble the upper world in some sense, and we are waiting for the moment that they awaken in us. This is called the heart understands.

Advantages Of Virtual Learning

laitman_959Question: We study online at the Kabbalah Academy of Moscow. What is the strong point of a virtual group? What is it worthwhile to work on? What should one pay attention to?

Answer: In every society there are potential positive and negative characteristics and qualities.

The uniqueness of a virtual group is the vast distances between you, and, in fact, you are not influencing each other physically. You influence each other only through your inner properties that you feel through the communications channels. And so this is much easier.

On one hand, I can connect with ten friends in a virtual group much more quickly than in a physical connection because through a screen, through the communications media, only what we want to convey to each other is transmitted. Therefore, it is much simpler.

On the other hand, there is an unlimited audience; billions of people throughout the world can connect.

Our connections today are universal, in various virtual forms, and we communicate between us at different times of day, and so forth.

In general, if you choose the system of connection between you correctly, then you can be very mobile and flexible so that you will constantly improve the connection between you until there is a real discovery of the Creator within it.

Question: How should we organize the practical work?

Answer: It is only through the connection between you.

Everything is understood only in the connection between people where we nullify our ego and create a good connection between us in its place where the Creator will be revealed. This is the practical work.

What Is The Source Of The Knowledge That Underlies The Wisdom Of Kabbalah?

Laitman_514.02Question: What kind of depth stands behind the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: There is nothing in the still, vegetative, animate, and human nature in all its forms and possibilities that is not explained by the wisdom of Kabbalah.

The explanation is scientific and precise, relying on one single criterion, which is that only two forces exist in nature, a positive force and a negative force, and between them they create all the elements, all the characteristics, and all the laws of creation. The use of the wisdom of Kabbalah gives us a hold on a universal and concrete system of knowledge through which we can approach everything.

Question: The science of physics has been studied and investigated for a few hundred years, while the wisdom of Kabbalah has existed for more than 5,000 years, but it is not taught anywhere. Why is this so?

Answer: The science of physics is included within the wisdom of Kabbalah, but it is a science that is relevant to the lowest level of matter, the inanimate level of our world, and there is nothing in it; there is no spirit; there is no management. It is only the inanimate result of higher forces.

Question: Is it possible to say that the wisdom of Kabbalah is the basis for all the mundane sciences?

Answer: The foundation for all the sciences is HaVaYaH; these are the four phases of the extension of the upper Light from the upper phase, Keter.

See The World Through The Ten Sefirot

laitman_928Question: Do I have to study the system of creation of the worlds, the ten Sefirot of the soul, like a multiplication table, or should I accept that for me it is something that is yet non-existent and incomprehensible?

Answer: You must study it, then later try looking for it and the system will begin to form within you. You will look at the world, observing the changes in it as if looking through a stencil, and you will see the ten Sefirot in this world.

Looking as if through a net at the world, at an individual, at his behavior, at interactions between people, at the movement of the wind, the air, at various kinds of interactions in the phenomena of vegetative, animate, or spiritual worlds, regardless of where you look, everywhere you will see the same single net of interconnections between two forces: positive and negative.

Question: How much time is needed to attain the ten Sefirot? Does it depend on the specific individual?

Answer: We have a very in-depth, six-volume text The Study of the Ten Sefirot (Talmud Eser Sefirot), which explains how the ten Sefirot form all the worlds, including our world as the last and lowest of the worlds, and the way in which the upper Light, through the ten Sefirot, controls all of creation.

Kabbalah In One Sentence

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Can you please explain your methodology in one sentence?

Answer: I think it is best to speak about Kabbalah as a methodology for expanding awareness by combining desires, and in this expanded awareness, one begins to perceive not our reality, but the force that gives birth to it.

This gives an individual the possibility to know more about the world in which he exists, its cause and effect, relationships, etc. In addition, a person becomes kinder, more approachable, and his participation in society improves.

The Work Of The Correction Of The World, Part 4

Laitman_712_03.jpgThe correction of the world consists of the correction of a person in resembling the upper force and approximating its qualities. The more we resemble the general force of nature in character and behavior, the better our lives will be.

The ultimate goal of creation is to become completely similar to the upper force, due to which we will begin to live in the world of absolute goodness.

Question: But why do you think that this will satisfy everyone and make them happy? After all, there are a multitude of other suggestions on how to improve our lives.

Answer: We are all a result of the upper force that created and purposely corrupted us so that we, ourselves, would come to resemble it. The science of Kabbalah doesn’t make anything up. It only studies the system of nature and presents us the results of its research. And the result is as follows: if we really want to live in a good world, we must correct ourselves to resemble the upper force of nature.

This conclusion was determined by the Kabbalists as a result of their study that has been going on for nearly 6,000 years. They tried to realize this correction at all times in all different kinds of societies and private individuals, and even on the scale of the entire nation, and based on this they made conclusions and left us this science.

Question: Many people think that all the troubles come specifically because of the upper force, which every religion perceives differently, and which happens to be the cause of many conflicts and even wars. So how can the correction depend on the upper force?

Answer: There are many fantasies and beliefs on the topic of the upper force that keep on changing. That’s why the only thing that is important is to study the upper force and through experience to determine what the good life should really be like and how to achieve it.

Question: And what if I don’t believe in the upper force?

Answer: You don’t need to believe in anything, only explore. Faith is only related to religion and research to science. As it is written, “The judge can only act based on what his eyes see,” that is the only thing we have to rely on.

Question: What is this upper force that we have to resemble and what does the person feel during this?

Answer: The upper force is the general force that includes the entire reality in it. If a person starts being similar to it, he begins to feel the entire world, just like it does. The upper force is the cause and reason for everything that exists in the world. That is why we need to learn about it as much as possible, to know it, and as a result of this knowledge we will understand how to build our lives in a better way.

Wondrous Book

Laitman_633_4Question: What kind of force does a Kabbalist insert into the Kabbalistic texts? Is it capable of developing new sensory organs in us?

Answer: A Kabbalistic book is a wondrous book, not the sheets of paper we see in our world. A book written by a Kabbalist looks like symbols on paper, like all other books, but these symbols are connected with the spiritual force of the one who wrote them and with his attainments.

Therefore, when reading this book, we want to attain what its author attained and to feel what he felt.

This is similar to reading some novel, but the difference is in the author. A novel is written by a person of this world, and the Kabbalistic book by a Kabbalist in his attainment in the spiritual world. This attainment in relation to us is called Surrounding Light.

We still don’t attain what he attained, but by connecting to him and by wanting to become like him, we attract the illumination to us that changes us and prepares us to also begin feeling the spiritual world.

Question: What if I just read the book without intention to attract the Light?

Answer: In that case, it hardly works. After all, there is no coercion in spirituality; if you want to move forward, the Light promotes you, and if you don’t want to advance, it doesn’t work. Advancement depends on our intention and desire to understand what is being read. In proportion to our desire to understand what the Kabbalist wrote, we awaken the influence of the Surrounding Light.

Question: Then why doesn’t the book work if I just read it since it has the power of the Kabbalist in it?

Answer: The Kabbalist gives you Light, but you don’t want it and so you don’t receive it. There is a desire to give from his side, but there is no desire to receive it from your side. Hence, we disseminate the wisdom of Kabbalah so widely and care that all the people will know about it. Otherwise, they will remain without spiritual attainment.

Moreover, you don’t even have to know the language. If you listen when people read a Kabbalistic text and you really want to understand it, then you will advance spiritually.

Question: Why do we need a book if desire is the most important thing?

Answer: We won’t have connection with the Kabbalist who is in the spiritual attainment without a book. Connection appears only through the text. If you listen when somebody reads this text, even without knowing the language, but you want very much to attain what the author attained, then you attract the Surrounding Light to yourself.
