Robot Nurse

laitman_627_2In the News (BBC):Humanoid robots, with cultural awareness and a good bedside manner, could help solve the crisis over care for the elderly, academics say.

“An international team is working on a £2m project to develop versatile robots to help look after older people in care homes or sheltered accommodation.

“The robots will offer support with everyday tasks, like taking tablets, as well as offering companionship.

“Academics say they could alleviate pressures on care homes and hospitals. …

Comment: People have always thought that by helping the elderly, they are carrying out a function of kindness and mercy, charity.

My Comment: Almost no characteristic of kindness and mercy have been discovered among people today. Care for the elderly is a lot of work and is difficult. Nobody wants to be involved with it and if they do, it is only in exchange for higher pay. But not everyone can afford to pay lots of money.

So in order to provide normal care for the elderly, it is specifically necessary to develop robotic technology and make it possible for everyone to acquire help like this.

Question: Would this type of help limit a person in performing good deeds?

Answer: No, room will always remain for people to help, but when an elderly person requires care 24 hours a day, then of course you need a multifunctional robot that can even read stories. This is our future—to be in the hands of a machine like this.

Question: What kind of a future can a person who is pushed into work like this expect?

Answer: That person must replace himself with robots for all worldly occupations except for involvement with his spirituality. He must work on correcting himself and engage only in attaining the upper world and bringing its higher conduct closer to us. In this way we will enter another system in which only we can be, not robots.

This is the real work, we must carry it out, and we will carry it out, nature will obligate us.

Emotions Purify The Soul

laitman_239Question: It is said that negative emotions can cause illness. Is this true?

Answer: In our world this is absolutely possible, but not in the wisdom of Kabbalah. In the wisdom of Kabbalah, emotions only purify the soul. This doesn’t mean that we must hold onto negative emotions, enjoy them, or become involved with sadomasochism, not at all in any way!

We need to constantly try to be in positive emotions, not because we are afraid of negative consequences, but because that is how we express our desire to be in bestowal and love, like the upper force, which is good and does good. We want to be in such a relationship with the higher power so we can feel each other better.

Fear Is A Lack Of Fulfillment

laitman_547_01Question: Fear is a very strong emotion. How can I cope with it?

Answer: By using the Ohr Makif (Surrounding Light). All of our emotions are positive or negative fulfillments of our desires, and fear is a lack of fulfillment.

It is the fundamental component of our sense of life, the world, and it comes from empty desires. When we are fulfilled, fear disappears, and when we are empty, the feeling of worry and insecurity appears.

There are close to 800 kinds of fear in the world. It is a very serious feeling of empty desires, called a Kli (vessel).

It is possible to cure fear with the help of the wisdom of Kabbalah, but to do this we must study it systematically and most importantly to study in a group! The empty desires will rapidly be filled then, and negative emotions will be replaced by positive ones.

So the most useful thing possible to hope for is working in a group since it is very difficult for a single person to achieve such a state. It is very easy to arouse the Ohr Makif in a group, and without a group, it is very difficult.

The Wisdom Of Kabbalah About Depression

laitman_532Question: Many people including youth and elderly people suffer from depression today. For some reason it is considered a mental illness. Is there a solution to depression according to the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: There is a solution. Depression is the result of our unsatisfied desires. A person has nothing but desires; if these desires are fulfilled, we feel joy. If they are partially fulfilled, we feel partial dissatisfaction, a state we are in all the time and which we have gotten used to.

We try to neutralize this dissatisfaction in different ways: by watching movies, playing football, taking pills, using drugs, etc., and thus somehow we keep ourselves afloat.

There are modes of depression in which we feel a deep black, gaping emptiness inside us, and we don’t feel any filling in the present and don’t feel that there will be any in the future either, which is indeed a difficult situation.

A person usually lives with hope for the future. He plans ahead to go on vacation, to go fishing, to play football with friends, etc. A person is usually occupied with thoughts about food, sex, family, wealth, respect, knowledge, and recreation. We have invented all this in our world as a distraction so we will be able to exist in this life. But when it is all swallowed by darkness, a person is in a serious mode of depression and is ready to die. With regard to this it is written: “my death is better than my life.”

The moment a person begins to feel such modes of depression, he asks himself about the meaning of life: “Is there no meaning to life in this world?” Such states lead him to the wisdom of Kabbalah. Therefore, it is practically impossible to reach the wisdom of Kabbalah without feeling depressed because it is a question of the meaning of existence.

If a person finds meaning in actions like sleeping, eating, traveling, and in general finds pleasure in something, the question about the meaning of life does not emerge in him. It is as if he is fine, but this meaning in life is on the animate level. If a person is not satisfied by such actions, he reaches the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Therefore, the first question a person asks as he comes to the wisdom of Kabbalah is: “What is the meaning of life? How can you fill this life? What is the point in this life?” It is actually the pointlessness that develops a person because our entire development is only under the pressure and suffering of the desire to discover and attain something. A person feels that he lacks something, but in fact he lacks the meaning of life.

After all the revelations throughout human history, the question is: “What for? Why? What is the meaning of all this?” Eventually it should bring us to the revelation of the true meaning of life.

We should understand that our world is merely a springboard from which we have to push ourselves and ascend to the next dimension that is right here in this world. We transcend to the next dimension while living in our corporeal body, while living in this world with a family, a job and everything else, and at the same time, we begin to attain the next world. This is the true meaning.

The system pushes us to search for this meaning and there wouldn’t be anything without it. And so our ego is called help against because it is actually the empty ego that pushes man in the right direction.

World AIDS Day

laitman_547_05Comment: The first of December is World AIDS Day. The HIV virus, which causes AIDS, was first discovered in 1981 and since then great efforts have been made to find a cure or a vaccination for this disease which is still incurable.

Answer: There are many such “dirty tricks” prepared for humanity to deal with.

When do diseases manifest? As soon as there are egoistic conflicts between us, when we use the egoism that has just been revealed in its most hateful forms, based on the resentment we feel toward each other, we are immediately shown a similar response.

This response descends from the spiritual level to the level of our mutual relations, to the corporeal level, and is revealed in the form of AIDS and many other infectious problems that spread throughout mankind. Suddenly diseases we thought were eradicated a long time ago emerge.

Question: Do you see a correlation between the problems that emerge and the egoistic evolution of humanity?

Answer: Yes, absolutely. I can’t say how exactly it will be revealed, but it is clear that if there is new egoism and we don’t correct in time, it leads to such outcomes on our level.

Question: Can we fight diseases with medication?

Answer: We can to a certain degree. We have to make great efforts and invest great resources to somehow mitigate the blow in the corporeal world, which on the spiritual level can be done at once.

One drop of medicine on the spiritual level operates almost immediately, whereas on the corporeal level, it involves spending billions of dollars. In any case, it is a violation of the balance of nature.

Ynet: “For Brethren To Dwell Together In Unity”

From my column in Ynet: “For Brethren To Dwell Together In Unity”

Is tribalism something good or bad? What is the power inherent in it that causes us to long for the sensation that is created during times of war? What is the harm that a lack of tribalism is liable to cause to our sensation of security, and how can we overcome it? Rav Laitman on the wisdom of the tribe.

Sebastian Junger, American journalist and author, has dedicated most of his life to staying on dangerous battlefields during wars throughout the world and reviewing them for newspapers. One of those times, when he returned from the first difficult and hard-pressed time in Afghanistan to the bosom of his loving family in the big city of New York, what was waiting for him was an unexpected experience: Suddenly, post-traumatic stress disorder began to stir in him, panic attacks and depression, that he didn’t know how to deal with.

As researcher by nature, he examined this phenomenon in depth and discovered that he was not alone. Hundreds of US soldiers experienced similar trauma, but the shocking discovery that Junger made was that, at the heart of the depression, there was a deep longing for the feeling of tribalism and brotherhood that he had experienced under sniper fire.

In times of war, soldiers sleep together, eat together, and fight together for a common goal, and result in the creation of a collective brotherhood. But once they are removed from their stay in a cohesive group and the sense of “togetherness” and return to the divided and alienated society, a feeling of emptiness attacks them immediately. For Junger, it took more than a year to overcome the situation that only got worse, but because of his pain and his own insights, he published the Tribe about six months ago, which examines the benefits that we have lost over the years when we detached from the life of the tribe.

What has humanity truly lost when we abandoned the tribal world? Is the price that all of us pay for our individualistic life worth it? What can we do today to rebuild our tribal life, the cohesion and unity that are so important for our personal and national strength?

 Secret Tribal Wisdom

The first (and last) time humanity felt like one big tribe was around 3,500 years ago in ancient Babylon. “Now the entire earth was of one language and uniform words” (Genesis 11:1), and the unique power inherent in the tribal feeling granted a sense of a protective and safe womb and it neutralized all self-concern in a person: from concern about food, clothing, and shelter, to the feeling of security in times of war and canceling uncertainty about the future. The sense of security came from the members of the tribe surrounding a person, but its origin was much deeper—the general power of nature—a “tribe”—broader in scope, spanning the entire universe. The general force of nature provides the positive power that nourishes us individually and collectively, protects us on a psychological level, and serves as a refuge for us. Just as the family unit is used by us for support, so the system of nature provides a feeling of calm and serenity, enveloped with warmth and love and balanced relationships.

One fine morning, egoistic nature broke out among the Babylonian tribe, disrupting the serenity that had dwelled among them up to then, and strengthening the feeling of “self” in each one. The Babylonians began to split and divide into smaller peoples and tribes (in retrospect, these became the foundation of the seventy nations of the world about which the historian Josephus wrote at length). The first positive force was trampled, and was replaced by the negative force of egoism, which leapt to the heavens as indicated by the story of the Tower of Babel. Instead of “we,” “I” was created. Instead of concern for others, there was concern for oneself, and instead of a tribe, the individual was the center.

Had the Babylonians been able to preserve a sense of tribalism, increasing the positive power that united them over the gaping void between the negative strength of the ego, their relationship would have strengthened and they would have risen to a new level of existence. But from where would they awaken the positive force? How could they maintain contact despite the distance created? This is precisely the “wisdom of the tribe” that Abraham taught.

A Small Tribe Within the Great Tribe of Nature

Abraham gathered a group of Babylonians around him. He taught them the wisdom of Kabbalah and educated them on how to return to being a cohesive tribe that would operate through altruism. “Charity and bringing peace among one person and another has never been found as much as it was in Abraham, for after all he was the father of a multitude of nations and he united them and made peace between all creatures” (Gevurot HaShem Chapter 6). The method that Abraham taught the Babylonians was simple and logical: transcend the conflicts that separate them and connect with love.

How is that done? It is through effort and a desire to connect with each other through brotherly love so they would awaken the positive force that exists in nature. Like a small tribe within the great tribe of nature, all of the parts are gradually connected into one big family by means of that same positive force of nature.

With the help of the method of Abraham, “Love covers all transgressions” (Proverbs 10:12), the Babylonians who were alienated from each other connected between them “as one man in one heart,” and over many days, that group became the people of Israel (Yisrael, Yashar El, straight to the Creator, the positive force in nature). The sole function of the people of Israel today is to convey the wisdom of the tribe to all of humanity, to be “a light of nations” (Isaiah 49:6).

But like a big steamroller, egoism continued to crush everything in its path and divided the nations into more and more peoples, nations, and cultures, and even they were divided into factions, communities, and groups, divided into political parties, movements, and gangs, until a person was left standing alone. Today, the global tribe has become modern, broken into fragments.
What transforms the tribe into all of humanity? It is concern for everyone, mutual responsibility, and belonging to a single force.

What have we created during these 3,500 years? Has the dissolution of the big tribe transformed our lives for the better and made us more comfortable? Clearly, it hasn’t. We have returned to the starting point like we were in Babylon—billions of people don’t know how to get along with each other. Even if it seems for a moment that everyone suddenly will get along and take control of the situation, the ego will prevent it. Moreover, if we make it possible for the ego to continue to operate, it will cause us to deteriorate into an extreme civil war.

There is no doubt that stressful situations like these are made to bring us closer together as Junger testified in his book. The question is, why do we require a war or a big disaster to overcome the separation that egoism sows? Is there no other way to preserve the sensation of unity and restore the sensation of tribalism that is so vital for us? The solution remains the same: we need to return to the advice of Abraham, the father of the nation, and connect between us. However, unlike in the days of Babylon, this time the connection must be global, not local.

The Tribe of All Humanity

Baal HaSulam writes: “Therefore, in our generation, when each person is aided for his happiness by all the countries in the world, it is necessary that to that extent, the individual becomes enslaved to the whole world, like a wheel in a machine.

“Therefore, the possibility of making good, happy, and peaceful conducts in one state is inconceivable when it is not so in all the countries in the world, and vice versa. In our time, the countries are all linked in the satisfaction of their needs of life, as individuals were in their families in earlier times. Therefore, we can no longer speak or deal with just conducts that guarantee the well-being of one country or one nation, but only with the well-being of the whole world because the benefit or harm of each and every person in the world depends and is measured by the benefit of all the people in the world” (“Peace in the World”).

Living in a tribe gives peace and security. The burden is distributed among everyone, and day-to-day survival, which is typical of a competitive society, disappears as if it never existed. In the not too distant future when more and more people find themselves unemployed, the tribal way of life will provide us with everything required for our existence with ease and comfort.

A tribe is not a function of the quantity of people. A tribe could number billions and even more. What would make one tribe of all of humanity? It is concern for everyone, mutual responsibility, belonging to one force. One small step toward connection between us will create a warm and friendly connection, and will awaken the positive force. Then, we will ascend to a spiritual dimension, to the feeling of a single tribe in which all of us are “children of Adam,” members of the same tribe of Adam HaRishon (the First Man). Just as Junger returned from the momentary tribalism on the battlefield and yearned to return to a feeling of unity, so from such a divided world where we are living in incessant war, we can return to live together in a tribe of brethren.

New Life 402 – The Root Of The Problem Of Suicide In Our Time

New Life 402 –The Root Of The Problem Of Suicide In Our Time
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Tal Mandelbaum ben Moshe

What leads a person to think about suicide, in what state is he in before taking this step, and in what way is it possible to get him out of this emotional state?

The Root of Suicide

Some of the people who are going to commit suicide see all other people as unfortunate. We must find a solution because there is growing emptiness, depression, and despair, and finally suicide. There are those who don’t find any reason for a life like ours, maintaining our body and our descendants until we die.

Existential questions arise in a person depending on his level of development. They distinguish the animal from the human.
A person who is going to commit suicide feels like his life is to no avail and he has no reason to live. Before committing suicide, a person suffers, he lacks any possibility of some kind of benefit for himself or others. The suicidal person feels that everyone is drugging themselves in order to carry on in life, and he is already disgusted by this.

Someone who grasps the meaning of life can open the eyes of a person who has suicidal tendencies. The meaning of life is to strive toward a new life during our lives. Break through from darkness to the Light.

New Life 401 – Suicide

New Life 401 – Suicide
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Tal Mandelbaum ben Moshe

How does a Kabbalist relate to the phenomenon of suicide? How can it be prevented with the help of learning about the purpose of life, and what social inquiry does the phenomenon lead us to?

We can see the phenomenon of suicide even among animals. This indicates that this phenomenon is embedded in nature. There have always been suicides. People do not consider their corporeal life as the most important thing. Going out to war endangers a person’s life and there is also the death penalty.

On the one hand, we spend a lot of money on saving people’s lives and, on the other hand, on wars and killing. A person who commits suicide calculates matters and sees that his life isn’t worth the effort of preserving it.

It is possible to heal the inclination to commit suicide as well as depression and despair. If a creature from another planet studied our life today, he might not find a justification for living it. Suicide is a call for us to examine our life: why are people brought to depression and despair? Our life probably has another purpose, a more internal purpose, than just living the way we do.

It cannot be that nature has developed us for no real purpose. We have to find that purpose. Our sages said that a man would be better off if he weren’t created, but since he was created, he has to study the reason for which he was created. The purpose of life is to reach “love thy friend as thyself.”

When a person fulfills this rule, he breaks through to eternity. Suicide is a result of the lack of understanding of the purpose of life and of what a person can attain during one’s lifetime. The rate of suicide is growing because the ego is growing, requiring more strongly inside us to fulfill life, but it doesn’t happen… the younger generation looks at us as dinosaurs, “what are you living for…?” All the virtual connections and the advanced technology only intensify their feeling of emptiness and despair.

The wisdom of connection brings people to a special connection between them, a connection in which they discover an enlightened upper world.

“Chronic Fatigue Syndrome May Be A Human Version Of ‘Hibernation’”

Laitman_037In the News (The Washington Post): “The research, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focuses on the devastating condition known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, more popularly known as chronic fatigue syndrome. CFS is one of the biggest mysteries of modern medicine and is characterized by severe fatigue and related issues such as headaches and memory problems. According to conservative estimates, 2.5 million people in the United States suffer from it, but no cause has ever been pinpointed. …

“They found that 80 percent of the metabolites were lower in those with CFS. They also found what they described as ‘abnormalities’ in 20 of the metabolic pathways.

“All this suggests that the metabolism of people with CFS is markedly slowed down. …

“When faced with adversity, cells go into defensive mode, he explained. ‘In most cases, this strategy is effective and normal metabolism is restored after a few days or weeks of illness, and recovery is complete after a few weeks or months.’ But with CFS, it’s possible the body got ‘stuck’ in that state.

“He said that although he does not believe that CFS is actually hibernation and although humans do not, in fact, hibernate, he said the ‘metabolic signature’ is similar to that of animals in hibernation.”

My Comment: We pay a price for disregarding the laws of nature, the goal of which is to bring unity between us and a restructuring of human society. Only in this way will we achieve tranquility, balance, and relaxation.

New Life 403 – Suicide Prevention

New Life 403 – Suicide Prevention
Dr. Michael Laitman in conversation with Oren Levi and Tal Mandelbaum ben Moshe

How does social support and conversation help us contend with life and prevent suicidal feelings?

We are social creations. There is always conflict between a person and his environment.

To prevent suicide, it is necessary to build a new educational-social framework for everyone, to hold daily workshops in small groups to explore life, relationships, and emotions. In these discussions, even someone who is introverted will hear the words of others about life. Openness is gradually created.

At first, all of the garbage comes out of a person; everyone unloads his own baggage.

We try to connect in a circle, nobody criticizes others, and we try to reach a single opinion. Gradually, each one begins to feel that connection with a warm society is more important to him than his personal life. Instead of suicide, he begins to find a higher value to life.

Connection workshops make everyone equal, balance the differences, and help everyone acquire a higher meaning.
