Who Makes A Choice?

laitman_236_01Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 6:14 – 6:15: Do not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples who are around you. For the Lord, your God, is a zealous God among you, lest the wrath of the Lord, your God, be kindled against you, and destroy you off the face of the earth.

Question: What does it mean “do not go after other gods”?

Answer: The fact is that if you follow egoism, then you follow Pharaoh who represents all by saying “Who is the Creator that I should listen to Him?” This is the reverse side of the Creator that He himself exhibits in front of us so that we would understand that the quality of love and bestowal is higher than the quality of egoism.

And so they work one against the other. Actually the Creator builds from a reverse, and we exist relative to it.

And what do we choose? He gave us organic, natural inclinations so that we would choose Pharaoh and we would have freedom of choice for it.

But when does it appear? After all, if I constantly rush to Pharaoh, am I in free choice with respect to the Creator? What does freedom mean? And what does choice mean? What are these states when I make decisions independently?

I suppose that if one thing is bigger than another from my point of view, I always choose the one that is bigger. And if they are equal, I don’t know what to choose. So in what sense do I choose?

The choice happens when I still don’t know which one is bigger and which one is smaller. It means that there is no choice as such; there is work in order to study and analyze what I should choose, what is really bigger.

When we attempt to do this we come to a state from which there is no escape. And then we have the one and only option: to cry out for the Creator. That’s when the Creator makes a choice, and not us.

Therefore our choice is only to turn correctly, according to the Kabbalistic principles to the only one that exists, controls, and fills everything, the upper force, and ask it for at least some minimal revelation, so that it will help us to advance correctly at least one step forward.

According To The Laws of Spiritual Development

laitman_933Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 6:10 – 6:13: And it will be, when the Lord, your God, brings you to the land He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and good cities that you did not build, and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant, and you will eat and be satisfied. Beware, lest you forget the Lord, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall fear the Lord, your God, worship Him, and swear by His name.

If we argue from the point of view of an ordinary person, haven’t we earned the land of Israel by being in slavery in Egypt for 400 years and then wandering in the desert for 40 years, “Have I received it for free? I spilled so much blood for it, suffered so much.”

But spiritual work is completely different from what it seems to us. Everything that is described in the Torah happens within us to the extent that we seek to unite with each other. By revealing stronger connection we get closer to the land of Israel in it.

The land of Israel is this common desire that we acquired the first time as an egoistic desire in Egypt, when we were connected only by the desire to exist for the sake of egoism, i.e., for the sake of Pharaoh.

We constantly fulfilled this desire, allegedly enriching Egypt, until our egoism swelled so much that we saw how it buries us in it and kills us. And then through the ten plagues that the Creator brought upon us, we cried out to the Creator and asked to exit the slavery.

All our work was that we were shouting, asking the upper force of love and unity to pull us out of our egoistic separation and mutual hatred. We were coming to it also during the forty-year journey through the desert, when we didn’t yet work with egoism in order to unite in it, but were only rising above it.

Through completely breaking away from Egypt and rising above egoism we enter the land of Israel, i.e., egoism itself, in order to convert it into the quality of bestowal and love. And when this great desire called Pharaoh or Egypt is transformed into this quality, it is already called the land of Israel.

Therefore, all the names of places mentioned in the Torah do not relate to geography; they are within us, inside our enormous egoistic desire that the entire humanity serves to this day.

And now we begin to realize that it is killing us, that we invest our life into this enormous desire and eventually die without leaving anything. So what do we live for? Is it in order to throw ourselves and our children in the crater of an insatiable ugly creature—egoism?

And therefore we decide to rise above it, as it is said, “And the sons of Israel cried out from the hard work.” This is when we receive forces of unity that are above egoism and begin more and more to pull ourselves from egoism during forty years of work in the desert.

And then once above egoism, we create a new strong generation that was born in the desert, we begin to enter egoism, to conquer this land. We descend into egoism and begin to transform and correct it. And this is the entry into the land of Israel.

Thus, every time during ascents and descents the laws are explained to us that are equally revered, but are implemented on completely different material, and therefore we see them in a different way.

The Creator Is Revealed In Love

laitman_940Torah, Deuteronomy 6:25: …And it will be for our merit that we keep to observe all these commandments before the Lord, our God, as He has commanded us.

We need to correct all of our desires from egoistic use to altruistic, to mutual connection with each other. We need to ask the Creator to give us the ability to connect, to become as one man with one heart, and in mutual love, give Him the opportunity to be revealed between us.

Strict observation of the commandments means to observe them not for yourself, but only for bestowal to others when you check all of your desires to their very bottom and don’t agree to any deal with egoism.
The Creator commanded us to “Love your neighbor as yourself” in every desire, in all circumstances that He presents before us.

Therefore, we need to convert that egoistic Kli (Vessel) that we carried out of Egypt to the mutual connection in which love is revealed, and in love, the Creator is revealed.

There Are No Repetitions In The Torah

laitman_527_04When we are reading the Torah we must not forget that there are no repetitions in it. What seems to us as an address to the past is always just a direction to a new action on a new level.

However, since we have 125 degrees of ascent and on each of them we need to correct all 613 desires (248 desires of the upper part of a soul and 365 desires of the lower part of a soul), on each degree they are repeated in increasing egoism. And we correct them to bestowal and love in stronger connection between them, and therefore it seems that they leave their imprint.

In fact, every time this is a completely new understanding of the world, it’s a deeper and more interconnected arrangement that reveals vast new niches, meaning spiritual spaces! After all, egoism, while becoming bigger, is attracted to the global connection that is revealed to us. And the main pleasure, the filling of the person’s soul with perfection and harmony, comes exactly from getting the general picture of interconnection.

Comment: When I was studying at school and then in university, it seemed to me that teachers constantly repeat the same thing. It is interesting that in Kabbalah allegedly the same laws are perceived differently every time. It seems that everything is already painted and written in the book and suddenly one line makes everything different.

Answer: Yes, it is incredible! And in material nature on all its levels are the same laws. Only what isn’t yet revealed on the still level, begins to unfold a little on the vegetative level, and more so on the animal level, and even more so on the human level. But we see in front of us completely different opportunities and different ways of life.

This indicates a depth of connection between the positive and negative particles inside of atoms—electrons, neutrons, and positrons. The only thing that occurs is the increasing revelation of their connection program, combinations, and mutual dependence, and on Earth appears a developed life. And it is the same in the spiritual world.

The Main Prayer Of Israel

laitman_534Torah, Deuteronomy 6:4: Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God; the Lord is one. For example, my name is Michael. So I have to say, “Hear Michael, the Lord, your God, meaning the upper force that controls you, is one and only. Therefore, what you are saying now is said to you, Him speaking within you. What you are wishing at the moment is Him wishing within you. What you are thinking about yourself and Him, and about anyone else is also only Him.

And where are you? You are this point of examination that says that everything in you, apart from the point itself, is the Creator.

And then what is your work? It is to make sure that this point of examination as well is fully connected to the Creator and you will become equal to Him.”

Torah, Deuteronomy 6:5: And you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your means.

All my desires, no matter what level they are, how I graduated them, and what qualities and directions they have, I must realize are only in order to demonstrate love for one’s neighbor. And from the love for the neighbor I will come to the love for the Creator. The Creator here is a collection of all my relationships to others.

Therefore it is said, “You shall love the Lord, your God.”

Torah, Deuteronomy 6:6: And these words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart.

In all my desires, that are called “heart,” will clearly be felt the quality of bestowal and love. It is they who will command the heart.

Torah, Deuteronomy 6:7: And you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.

In all my states I must constantly revive the Creator in me, not forgetting that there is no one else besides Him, and He is the quality of love. I must remember it when I “lie down” and when I “rise up,” in bad states and good states, and also in future states that are called “sons.” To “lie down” means to be in a weakened state. To “rise up” and to “walk” means to go forward by the spiritual degrees.

Question: What does it mean “…and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way…?

Answer: “And speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way,” i.e., in the state when I am inside my heart and in the state when I feel that I am exiting it. The heart of a person is called “house.”

“When you walk on the way” is a state when I change my desires all the time, correct them, and rise above them. They appear in me, but I am not a master of this. I must constantly have only one idea, one goal, and one basis of existence: everything that happens to me comes from the Creator.

I am in absolute connection with Him, no matter what happens to me, even if I am in a catastrophic condition! After all, it comes to me so I will find absolute connection with the Creator in it.

Torah, Deuteronomy 6:8: And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for ornaments between your eyes.

It means to tie a “knot in the memory” (Tefillin – phylacteries) on the left hand that is connected to the heart. And Tefillin on the head should be “between your eyes” so that words will remain in the heart and in the mind.

Everything that relates to the heart is the level of Bina. Eyes are the level of Hochma. It means that the Creator will always control your desires and thoughts so they will be directed through two Lights, Hassadim and Hochma.

Question: If I tie a knot on the hand and a knot between the eyes, does it mean that I connect Bina and Hochma?

Answer: It is not just a knot. In the upper form there is a connection between the desire and the Light, creature and the Creator, in it. I want such a connection so it will spread now in my heart and in my mind.

Torah, Deuteronomy 6:9: And you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.

Gates and doorposts are an entry to yourself and an exit from yourself, when you exit into new desires that are not yet developed and corrected by you, and then you enter back, i.e., place them inside yourself. In both cases you must constantly control and check yourself that you are filled only by the Light of bestowal and love.

You must always be with the Creator, with the Light of correction that acts on all four levels of desire, Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey. Therefore, in both the Mezuzah and Tefillin are four so-called texts, i.e., four qualities.

The prayer “Shema Israel” – (“Hear, O Israel”) became the main prayer of Israel. There is nothing except it. All other prayers are as though additions, expansions for various special cases.

Desire Directed Toward Bestowal

“The land which you will possess” is a desire (Ratzon from the word “Eretz” land, land of desire) directed toward bestowal and love for all the surrounding ones and through them toward the Creator.

As we have discussed more than once, the surrounding ones are nothing but my inner properties, which I perceive as outside, opposite to me. It turns out that only when I treat them with love, I relate to them in the same way as the Creator. At that time, I adhere with the Creator.

Golden Path To Love

laitman_527_03Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 5:29: Keep them to perform [them] as the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside either to the right or to the left.

Do not turn aside either to the right or to the left means to go along the middle line only, using all your qualities for bestowal and love.

All qualities, whatever they may be, we must accept so that we rise above ourselves in love for them.

When we deviate to the left, we enter the state of uncorrected desires and can’t leave them so. When we deviate to the right, we enter the state when we “float” in the Upper Light, in the quality of bestowal and love, but we don’t participate in it with all our egoism.

Therefore, both sides have to be balanced by the middle line, which is called a golden path to love.

Everyone Must Become Moses

laitman_740_02Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 5:26: Would that their hearts be like this, to fear Me and to keep all My commandments all the days, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!

Fear is the quality of awe before the fact that a person has an opportunity to correct himself, but he constantly misses this opportunity to merge with the upper force, to rise to its level, and to become like Moses.

It says in the Torah that everyone must become Moses, that is, to completely correct himself.

Question: Moses often said, “I spoke to Him and convey to you what He told me.” What does it mean that he hears the Creator?

Answer: This means that he feels Him within himself. The sensation of the Creator at the level of Bina is called hearing and at the level of Hochma it is vision.

Before people enter the land of Israel, Moses repeats the laws of the Torah to them.

The entire Torah speaks about one single principle, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” However, at each level, it carries an increasing capacity, deeper egoism, and according to it, the height of spiritual ascent.

Each level looks different. It’s just like with children: in principle, you tell them the same thing, but they understand it differently, and you treat them differently. Everything depends on the internal desire of a person, his requirements and his abilities to absorb your message within himself.

Me And My Seven Billion Internal Desires

Laitman_115_04Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 5:25 – 5:28: And the Lord heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard the sound of the words of this people that they have spoken to you; they have done well in all that they have spoken. Would that their hearts be like this, to fear Me and to keep all My commandments all the days, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! Go say to them, ‘Return to your tents.’ But as for you, stand here with Me, and I will speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances which you will teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess.”

Moses starts to line people up dividing them into tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. This is a proper distribution of the desires to their levels and their gradual correction in accordance with the depth of their egoism.

Desires in a person mean people and their individual personalities. This is what a person sees outside of him.

All those seven billion I see around me are my internal desires that I perceive as existing outside of me. Had I not seen them outside of myself, I wouldn’t feel them the way I do now. And when they seem to me to be living in this world, I immediately begin to feel that I confront them.

And then who am I? I am an uncorrected point in the heart. Therefore, I feel myself in a confrontation with them. I have to reach love toward each one of them despite the egoism dividing us.

In other words, my egoistic heart is in front of me in the form of external objects. Only when I’m ready to contain the entire outside world, can I say that I am corrected.

But we don’t need to correct ourselves. We don’t have any forces and predispositions for it. We must give it all to the care of the Upper Light and allow Him to do it! Therefore, the Kabbalistic method is intended for placing ourselves under the influence of the Upper Light.

And when a person begins to realize this, his life becomes easy. Therefore it is said, “To those who fear me, tremble before me, the Torah seems very simple.”

Turkey: Who Loses And Who Wins?

Laitman_727Question: During recent weeks a whole chain of events occurred in the world and it is still unclear where they will lead us. It began with the exit of Britain from the European Union. Then major terrorist acts broke out one after another in European countries.

And yesterday a military coup attempt was made in Turkey that caused a terrible rift in the country. What can you say about the situation in Turkey?

Answer: Turkey is at the crossroad of Europe and Asia, both geographically and internally. On the one hand, it belongs to the Muslim world and, on the other hand, it is a member of NATO and seemingly belongs to Europe.

The border between Europe and Asia runs through Turkey’s capital Istanbul, or as it was formerly called Constantinople. And those there feel this split, an internal partition. There are many people in Turkey who want to be Europeans, but recently the part that belongs to radical-Islam intensified.

The gap between these two groups is steadily increasing, and therefore in the future we have yet to see a lot of turmoil in the country. The situation won’t calm down by itself, although the coup failed and President Erdogan now has an opportunity to bring his order to the country. But people don’t really welcome it.

Erdogan’s opponents have failed so far, but it doesn’t mean they have no power. We need to understand that the entire world is now at the similar crossroads of two different ways. Soon we will see the same opposition in European countries, when the European power will subside and the opposing Muslim power of radical Islam will intensify.

Question: So who will win? Will it be Islam?

Answer: No. None of them can win. Scales will swing from one direction to the other, but neither side will win.

The method of connection that the wisdom of Kabbalah offers should win, and then the entire world will unite and there will be no winners and losers. It doesn’t matter to what side each one belongs, left or right, all will feel that salvation is only in unity. The overall success is only in this; there can’t be anything else.

Question: And how will Turkey look then, like a Muslim country or Western European?

Answer: The country will be neither Muslim nor European but simply one in which there is a complete unity. And it will be the same way in the entire world. If the Light that returns to the source flows through the Kabbalists to the world, to all the nations, then everyone will understand and feel that unity is the only correct and possible state.
