When Is the Desire to Please the Creator Born?

239Question: The third stage of governance is reward and punishment. But man is still not perfectly righteous because he lacks the commandment of love. So what will help him come to the third stage? Why is he striving for this?

Answer: It is to please the Creator.

Question: This is without wanting to love the Creator? Does he not consider the commandment of love at all? Is he trying to, but has not achieved it yet?

Answer: No, he has no need to love the Creator yet.

Question: Then why should I want to please Him?

Answer: Such a desire is born in you before the need to love Him appears.

Personal Aspiration

549.02Question: How can you help a friend experience joy and pleasure in spiritual work if he has no taste or smell in it and does not have the strength to justify the Creator?

Answer: How will you convey this to him if he does not yet have such tastes?

Question: Maybe with prayer, or words, some kind of support?

Answer: You can give him any kind of support, but what will he feel about it?

He must have a personal desire for spiritual work even if he does not enjoy it yet.

Become Close to the Creator

610.2Question: What polar opposite states must a person reach to justify the Creator in them so as to remain in the state of “the earth is filled with His glory” and not return back? What are these critical states?

Answer: If you are in complete connection with the Creator and elevate Him above everything around you, above this world and the future spiritual world, that is when you become close to the Creator.

We need to be more sensitive in our perceptions, and then we will move through all this quickly.

How Can One Avoid Evil and Do Good?

627.1Question: If a person feels suffering, but does not see a place where he can get pleasure, what should he do, where can one go, and how can one avoid evil do good?

Answer: Let him distance himself from evil as much as he can and get closer to good, and then he will see where the Creator wants to lead him.

Question: Most of all I feel the need for a good connection with people, but at the same time I feel resistant and unable to connect. These are two completely polar sensations. Do I need to overcome this distance and come to a unified state when I want, can, and need it?

Answer: You want to find the right point and rush into it instantly. That will not work. You need to do it gradually.

Question: What will help us withstand this amplitude of polar sensations, this distance that is only increasing?

Answer: The fact that you try to be in a state of inner balance. This indicates growth of the soul.

Awaken Joy within Oneself

581Question: What determines that some people suffer from depression from an early age and never seem to find what brings them joy, while others live their whole lives in joy without feeling that something is missing?

Answer: This depends on the root of their soul. This can only be corrected through systematic work on oneself.

Question: If a person no longer feels pleasure in this world and material things do not bring them joy, what should they do? Can we somehow awaken ourselves?

Answer: You must use all your strength to awaken joy within yourself. Rabash would often close the door to his room and start singing and dancing. In this way, a negative mood would shift into a good, positive state.

Question: Dancing and thereby purifying oneself from negativity, transitioning into joy—is this state also given by the Creator, or is this my choice?

Answer: This is indeed your choice. Dance every day, it’s not bad.

The Most Beneficial State

032.01Question: Sometimes when you suffer you come to the conclusion that the solution is to increase the faith in the Creator, that He does everything for the good. Does this conclusion come from desires to bestow?

Answer: No, Kabbalah has said more than once that the most beneficial state for us is when we try to find the truth. And then we grab onto it. There is no other more advantageous state.

Understand that you cannot have a permanent connection with the Creator until you correct all your egoism for the sake of bestowal.

Room for Joy

6Precisely when one works in the form of “And you shall take for you,” meaning the work during the acceptance of the burden of the kingdom of heaven, when the body resists this work, then there is room for the joy of adornment (Baal HaSulam, Shamati, 19, “What Is ‘The Creator Hates the Bodies,’ in the Work?”).

We take upon ourselves the burden of the kingdom of heaven “like an ox to the burden and a donkey to the load,” meaning without any limitations or conditions. Then, we feel joy in being able to accept this upon ourselves.

Question: Why is the quality of joy especially important to the Creator?

Answer: It is a sign that you are working for the Creator with approval and enthusiasm, and you rush to Him with all your heart.

Serve the Creator

938.04Question: On ordinary days, our ten is always very united and active. But on special days, during holidays, and at conventions, we constantly experience disunity. What are we doing wrong?

Answer: You need to bring weekdays closer to special days, appreciate holidays in advance, and prepare to be in a special prayer to the Creator on these days.

Question: What does it mean to truly serve the Creator?

Answer: Serving the Creator means fulfilling His desires. The Creator acts however He wishes: in us, through us, and outside of us.

Question: How can we feel or understand that it is He who is acting?

Answer: You cannot. You must believe the Kabbalists who tell you this. There is no other way for you.

Reach Connection in the Ten

528.04Kapot [pans] mean Kefia [coercion], when one assumes the kingdom of heaven coercively. This means that even when reason disagrees, he goes above reason. This is called “coercive mating” (Baal HaSulam, Shamati, 85, “What Is the Fruit of a Citrus Tree, in the Work?”).

Question: What does it mean to implement unity in the ten coercively, and how can we do that?

Answer: It is called “coercively” because we are required to achieve connection in the ten through faith above reason whether we want it or not. If we do this, everything will work out. In this connection, we will find everything.

If I have already come to connection in the ten, then from there I have a direct path to the Creator. I begin to understand what “in the ten” means, what connection is, how I can achieve it, what it gives, and how it is manifested within me. I need nothing more; through this, I correct myself.

Splendor in Spiritual Work

938.01We see about the citron that the adornment is in it precisely before it is suitable for eating. However, when it is suitable for eating, there is no adornment in it anymore (Baal HaSulam, Shamati, 19, “What Is ‘The Creator Hates the Bodies,’ in the Work?”).

Each of the four plant species—etrog (citron), palm branch, myrtle, and willow—has inner qualities that we must somehow identify, unite, and do spiritual work for their common connection.

Question: If a person feels the splendor of the Creator, he might think: “How can I enjoy this alone?” Should he somehow hide it from himself?

Answer: No, there is no need to hide anything. Simply move forward, invite friends and others to unite and reveal the Creator among themselves.

Question: Does the whole group need to achieve the quality of splendor where there is taste and fragrance in the spiritual work?

Answer: No, each person reaches it in their own time.
