Limited Knowledge

928Question: There are many types of people according to their development. Some people do not feel the hidden volume of data, i.e., hidden factors affecting them.

But many people, scientists in particular, are haunted by this. They make this the goal of their life. That is, a person feels a reality is concealed from him and suffers from it. What meaning does nature put into this?

Answer: This is the fate of humanity, which must feel its inferiority in knowledge. Thanks to this feeling, he moves forward. But will we understand all of nature, and will it be revealed to us or within us—the question remains open with no answer. Of course, we try to enter this uncertainty, to understand it, develop ourselves, and feel there is no question about this. But the fact is that as we accumulate knowledge, especially lately, we get used to the fact that not everything is given to us, we cannot learn everything, and we will not reach a large amount of knowledge. The Universe is open to us in ever greater unknowability.

Comment: This is interesting. Humanity believes we are moving from ignorance to knowledge, and now, you are saying the opposite.

My Response: Yes. As humanity develops, it begins to understand its limitations in knowledge and sensation.

Inconceivable Amount of Information

712.03Question: Is a person’s feeling that there is something concealed in the universe that is inaccessible to him positive?

Answer: This question exists at all levels of nature, even at the vegetative one. After all, everyone yearns for something: knowledge, attainment, and so on.

But man has a special development of questions, and he is constantly looking for answers to them. However, in our time, we come to the conclusion that nature is so diverse, flexible, and limitless that we, in principle, cannot understand it.

Question: Is the fact that we are ready to come to terms that there is something inaccessible to us a normal attitude on the part of a person? Or should there be some more pragmatic attitude?

Answer: No, I think this is a normal, adult attitude. That is, we understand that we are not able to cover the entire volume of information, sensations, and attainments that nature has.

We Are Suffering because of the Tower of Babel

115.05Arkady writes:

Dear Michael Laitman,

As I understand it, the Tower of Babel is the root of all troubles. There was one nation, they built a Tower, and the Creator broke it and mixed their languages.

What for? All the terrible things that are happening today are from there.

Please explain these actions of the Creator. You keep saying that He is good. Why did He break the tower, mix the languages, and cause a quarrel between everyone? What for? It all started so peacefully.”

It is written in the Torah (Bereshit, Genesis, 11:4): “And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered upon the face of the entire earth.”

This is how it all started. What is wrong with that, please tell me.

Answer: There is nothing wrong. The Creator did not want it to be like this.

Question: Later it becomes clear that He did not want it to be like this. But what was their transgression? They wanted to build a tower.

Answer: They wanted to be all together, build, and live, be one commune, respect and love each other, and so on. But the Creator wanted it to be according to His conditions and not theirs. This is why He disrupted it all.

Question: What is the Tower of Babel in the spiritual sense?

Answer: It is an egoistic elevation of corporeal life, which is elevated to the state of love for one’s neighbor based on egoism.

Question: Are you saying that this is the main mistake?

Answer: Of course! They do not need the Creator, they do not need anyone: “neither God, nor king, nor hero.” Just us, the common people.

Question: In principle, was this construction of the Tower of Babel by and large at the heart of communism and all revolutions, “peace to huts, war to palaces,” that is, “we will manage?”

Answer: Yes.

Question: When does a person build this inside himself? He is building a career for himself, he is making money, is this when he is gradually building the Tower of Babel?

Answer: Yes, but this is to a small extent. This is not the highest goal. Because in the case of the Tower of Babel, they built it for themselves forever. But here, even though a person is building a career and everything else, he knows that he will die.

Comment: And there, if they could do it, then, as they say, we will reach the heavens.

My Response: Up to heavens, yes. This “up to heavens” is a big problem; the main one. That is, you can build a tower, but do not touch the Creator. You will not reach Him.

Question: Arkady further asks: “What is it that the Creator does not like here?”

“And the Lord said, ‘Lo! [they are] one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they have commenced to do. Come, let us descend and confuse their language so that one will not understand the language of his companion.’

“And the Lord scattered them from there upon the face of the entire earth, and they ceased building the city” (Bereshit, Genesis, 11:6-11:8).

That is, Arkady believes that all the problems began with this.

Answer: Yes. That is, they will not be able to come to a common egoistic result. This result should be: we are all together and therefore we all feel good.

Comment: When we say the phrase: “United nation, we are together, and we will defeat everyone. One nation is invincible”…

My Response: No, this is not enough to defeat egoism. There is also a need for a Creator here. This is the desire of the Creator.

Question: Then on what basis can a tower be built so that it does not collapse?

Answer: Bestowal and love for each other and for the Creator.

Comment: When you say “and for the Creator,” this is difficult. A person does not see or feel Him.

My Response: No, “for the Creator” does not mean some kind of God, somewhere there, so high up that he is not visible. “For the Creator” means a connection between us that we raise above ourselves.

Above yourself, that is, “love your neighbor as yourself.” Then above all this, you raise the ideal of the Creator, who created all this above our egoism.

Question: That is, my nature is “I, and everything is for me,” and here, on the contrary, I want to rise above this so that everything is different, everything is for the other. Is this called building a real tower?

Answer: Of course. Then it will stand forever.

Question: Why do we build towers all the time? After all, it collapsed a long time ago, historically speaking, and we continue and continue to build these towers.

Answer: Humanity needs this. Towers, pyramids, mausoleums—all this is necessary, a person needs it.

Question: Even though they are all falling apart and will definitely fall apart?

Answer: Yes, but we are still building.

Question: Why do we have this in us?

Answer: We need this symbol. We are building a house for our egoism.

Question: So we need a symbol that we can pray for all the time. Is this what they call “praying to other gods”?

Answer: Yes. It can be temples, it can be pyramids, no matter what form it takes.

Question: In what case will we stop building them?

Answer: Only when the Creator is revealed to us.

Comment: At the same time, we do not know when He will be revealed.

My Response: We do not know, but only in this case. Revelation will completely cover our dreams, plans, future, and everything! That is, when He is revealed to us, we will understand that all this was complete nonsense and that we built it all in vain.

Question: You say that the Creator is mercy, kindness, and love all the time, and so on. Why is this such a cruel mercy that it lasts for a long time, that blood has been shed for centuries? Wars have been going on for centuries, but He still does not reveal Himself. Why?

Answer: He is revealed under certain conditions! What do you want from Him? He must be revealed in the state of His absolute unity with people. But it does not exist. And so far, there are no inclinations for this.

Question: The unity of the Creator with people? In which case?

Answer: If we are similar in qualities to Him, that is, if we are like Him, He will be revealed.

Questions without Answers

198I think that when we know that we actually do live in uncertainty, then we ought to admit it; it is of great value to realize that we do not know the answers to different questions (Richard Feynman, theoretical physicist).

Question: What can you say about this?

Answer: We exist in some volume of nature, but we do not even know the part we live in and are in contact with. Therefore, it is difficult to say what else we need to discover in order to answer the questions: Who are we?, What are we?, Where are we?, and so on. There are many questions, but practically no answers.

The further we develop, the more questions we have. Even the answers that we received earlier, today seem to be somehow incomplete, implicit, and unclear. This is how we live.

Question: Why is a person given the feeling that there is something concealed from him?

Answer: Animals also have this. They also exist in a world that is not entirely clear to them.

But for humans, this is more in the area of cognition. Here, of course, we cannot compare with animals; we have many more questions, theoretical ones at that, emanating not from our being, but from our mind, our development, out of its incompleteness and inferiority. But still, we somehow cope with it.

Expanding the Range of Our Sensations

276.02Question: Can you give examples of or describe the spiritual world?

Answer: It is impossible to describe it! I have no words to describe the spiritual world! Therefore, Kabbalists invented their own language or used the language of our world to describe spiritual roots.

But then you still imagine that there are objects from our world in the spiritual world. When I say: “Man, woman, children, and trees,” you imagine them in the spiritual world as the same as they are in our world.

First of all, we need to break away from earthly images, similar to Abraham when he smashed his idols.

Therefore, I should not describe what is happening in the upper world. It is said: “What you attain, you and no one else will feel.” This is impossible to convey! You have to get to it yourself and attain it.

Then you and I, feeling the same picture, will be able to exchange our impressions. It will be clear to us from our common language what we are talking about.

We need to start working with ourselves to expand the range of our sensations. Until then, you cannot do anything. You will look at the others and say: “How small they are! How stupid they are! How limited they are! How they lead themselves to even greater suffering!” And you will not be able to do anything either.

Inside a Limited Picture of the World

423.02Now we are in the world of infinity in which there are an infinite number of images, connections, and all kinds of properties. But we perceive it as our world. We build some kind of “toys in it, and do things because we do not want to expand our perception of it.

We have fenced ourselves off from the infinite, special world we actually live in, and instead of expanding our perception and feeling what it is, we keep ourselves busy with playing and talking to ourselves, practically lying to ourselves, and that is how we exist.

We are given some segment of existence called our life. Within this framework, we are given the opportunity to expand the boundaries of our perception so much as to go beyond the limits of the bodily sensory organs and begin to perceive the world around us differently from how it is depicted to us through the five corporeal senses. Our vision and hearing are so limited that they give us a very small picture, which we call our world.

Kabbalists do not consider it to exist at all. They say it is “an imaginary world, a contrived world,” because in fact, it has nothing to do with the true picture, which is revealed if you begin to expand your perception and reveal the real universe.

But what do we do? We deceive ourselves throughout our lives. Inside the small picture of the world that we perceive, we begin to play with all sorts of toys and movies. It is a pity!

But since there is a program of creation from which we cannot escape, in this limited picture of the world, which is screened to us through our five senses, we gradually begin to feel an acute lack: “It is not enough. We want more. We feel bad. We need to get out of this state.”

Yet we are trying to somehow talk ourselves out of it, spinning around in order to stop feeling the crisis. In fact, this is a crisis in our perception of the universe. Nature pushes us to rise, expand our perception, and begin to feel the eternal perfect picture of the world that exists outside of us.

But we do not want to do that; we resist until we go through such suffering that will no longer let us remain in this picture, and we begin to associate our suffering with the limitation of our perception. Then we will have to change ourselves.

Limited Human Perception

928Question: What replaces sight for us during the first spiritual attainment?

Answer: The light of Hochma, which we comprehend.

Question: So this is a pure perception of light?

Answer: No, it is not pure because it is perceived in my senses. Just as I now perceive everything through physical vision, I perceive it through spiritual eyes.

Everything that I comprehend, I still perceive in my inner disturbance. I do not perceive pure light. I call light what is formed in my perception.

There is nothing in creation that can be perceived objectively. There is no such understanding! I perceive everything to the extent that my properties coincide with some object outside myself, with some force outside myself.

I do not know what a force, an object, or anything that exists outside of me is, and I never will! I cannot feel it. I can only perceive how I feel things outside of me.

Let us say, I have a blind dog with nothing but a sense of smell. Around it is a big world of images, different shapes, large cubes, statues, and people who move, talk, and do something. The dog does not hear, does not see; it just smells. That is its whole world.

It does not perceive forms, peoples’ expressions, or their external expressions. It perceives everything through smell.

Since we represent a whole system (each of us), then when I scold you, there is one smell; when I rejoice, I have a different smell, and so on. And dogs have a spectrum—millions of different smells. The dog catches this and builds its own picture of the world. So are we.

The World Is the Way We Are Capable of Seeing It

294.4We think that connection in the ten is the same as simple friendship like with former classmates or other long–time friends with whom it is easy and pleasant for us to be together.

But the ten is not the same at all. By connecting with friends in the ten we build a spiritual Kli. Through this, we attract the Creator, the good who does good, into our connection, and it is He who corrects our state.

Therefore, connection in the ten is not just a friendly connection, but the attraction of a higher spiritual force into our connection, the only force that can correct everything.

And if we want to change the picture of the world that appears before us today with its wars and sufferings in practice and get closer to the Creator, then we need to get closer to our friends, as it is said: “From love to friends to love of the Creator.”

And then, within our connection, the Creator will be revealed, and we will feel how the state of the world changes.

All states that we see around us are actually our personal, internal states. We do not see what is truly happening in the world, but we see only what we are capable of seeing in it.

And if we want to see that not only the power of judgment rules in the world, but love and mercy, we can do this through the power of our unity and prayer to the Creator. The power of judgment will completely disappear only at the very last stage of final correction. The main thing is to rise now from the feeling of this world, the lowest reality, and feel that the Creator is doing everything for our benefit to raise us higher and higher.

The World Is a Reflection of Our Qualities

423.02Question: All I see around me are reflections of some of my qualities. How do I recognize these images in myself through seeing something from the outside and receiving some information?

Answer: I am not interested in external images! These are all false; they are my contrived ideas and our temporary, illusory world. It is depicted by our qualities as if it exists outside of us, but it is inside of us: the galaxy, the universe, and so are all my inner qualities.

At the first spiritual degree, it takes such a low position that Kabbalah simply does not deal with it.

Let us say I have a dog. What difference does it make to me how the dog perceives its world? I am interested in feeling the world through higher qualities. Kabbalah uses low qualities only for analogy, to explain how to develop upper qualities in ourselves, and not to go deeper down.

There Is No Absence in Spirituality

537You already know that there is no absence in the spiritual, and that transference from place to place does not mean becoming absent from the first place and arriving at the next place, as in corporeality. Rather, they remain in the first place even after they have moved and arrived at the next place, as though lighting one candle from another, without the first being deficient (Baal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Science of Kabbalah”).

In spirituality, there is no moving from place to place. Everything that is in its place can also change and move to another without leaving the previous one.

Comment: Now even quantum physicists have discovered that electrons can be in different places at the same time.

My Response: This is not the same thing. In spirituality there is no transition from a past place to another or reproduction, as is possible in our world. It is just that the property of each spiritual object is such that it does not disappear from where it once was, but generates another state from itself.

Comment: For example, in one of the articles, Baal HaSulam gives an example of water that can freeze or evaporate, i.e., change its properties.

Answer: Yes, but these are aggregate states; however, the essence does not change.
