Is It Possible to Pray to the Law of Attraction?

Remark: As I understand, in Kabbalah there is no plea for mercy, no atonement for sins in exchange for promises of unquestioning obedience?

My Comment: We deal with serious actions. I do not stand before the judge begging for forgiveness. I face a system that completely defines me and I am trying to figure out how we influence each other.

If I have any requests, I have to state them in such a way that the system will correctly respond to them. If there are no requests, then this is a problem because the system expects real intervention from me in it.

Question: Is it just like I cannot pray to the law of attraction?

Answer: Of course! How is the law of gravity different from others? This is also the law and force of the Creator, like all other forces of nature.

Question: What is the difference between the Creator and the laws of nature?

Answer: There is no difference. Pray to the law of gravity. You can pray to any force of nature and ask to be in the right alignment with it.

Question: If I fall, I cannot ask the law of gravity to soften the blow?

Answer: No, it will not help.

Question: What should I do? Should I place a mattress or something else to soften the fall?

Answer: It will help. Or you should ask the Creator to make sure that you do not fall: “How should I change so as not to fall?”

That is, you do not ask Him to protect you from falling, but you ask how to change in order not to fall. Everyone in the world asks for protection, but it does not help. But to change, to make yourself better, so that you are properly acted upon by the forces of nature so you do not fall, that you can ask. That is, you only ask for your correction and nothing else.

Prayer and Prayer Books

Question: In Kabbalah, prayer means to “judge yourself.” What does that mean?

Answer: It means that a person evaluates himself, his qualities, and checks based on what properties he measures and evaluates the Creator. Therefore, he judges himself: Am I doing it right, am I rising above my egoism, can I be objective, etc.?

A person carries out internal clarifications of the level of one’s perception, how objective it is and how correctly one senses the Creator, undisturbed by one’s inner egoism.

Question: Is it possible to say that prayer is the realization of what a person desires from the current state and what state one aspires to? This delta causes a necessary internal request in the person, and although one does not understand whom one is addressing, a person senses changes within himself.

Answer: Precisely.

Question: And this nothing to do with those prayer books also written by Kabbalists?

Answer: Everything is much more complicated here. Prayer books are what the Kabbalists wrote for themselves, that is, a research plan of their own perceptions and how it can be corrected and adjusted.

Kabbalistic prayer books are a whole system of human interaction within himself, with the world, and the Creator, which is inside him. This is very serious instruction and very serious work.

Question: What if you just read what they wrote as is traditionally accepted on holidays without understanding it? Does it have any effect?

Answer: The fact is that there is an ordinary prayer book and there is a Kabbalistic one. A Kabbalistic prayer book will be understood only by a Kabbalist, and only starting from a certain level. An ordinary prayer book can be understood by anyone who knows this language.

Remark: But the usual prayer book was also written by Kabbalists.

My Comment: Yes, but the Kabbalistic prayer book deals with the interaction of forces and the human being. In an ordinary prayer book, this is conveyed in a language understandable to everyone.

Question: So can prayer be divided into two parts? Is one of them my inner prayer that now I really am lacking in relation to the state I want to come to, what pains me right now?

Answer: Yes. There is also a prayer that the Kabbalists wrote. If I read it, it will be like an instruction of spiritual elevation for me. Although I don’t yet feel such states, it nevertheless raises me, helps me.

Question: I read in Wikipedia that Kabbalah and philosophy are two systems of knowledge about man and the world and that both are based on the same question—the question of the purpose of existence.

If we talk about the origins of philosophy, the German philologist and humanist Johann Reichlin (XV-XVI century) wrote that his teacher Pythagoras, the father of philosophy, adopted his teaching not from the Greeks but rather from the Jews. Therefore, he should be called a Kabbalist, and he was the first to translate the word “Kabbalah,” unknown to his contemporaries, into Greek as “philosophy.”

Did the Greeks study with Kabbalists?

Answer: The Greeks studied with Kabbalists in the time of the Jewish prophets.

At that time, people were already connected and the Jews accepted everyone who wanted to study. Just like in ancient Babylon, those who wanted to joined Abraham and those who did not could join later. Kabbalah was open to all.

Question: What is the difference between Kabbalah and philosophy? Is it the fact that Kabbalah does not take into account abstract and speculative reasoning, for example, about the soul and God, as philosophy does?

Answer: Yes, because philosophy does not have a clear tool to approach a person, how to start “poking around” in it, to study desires and their various gradations, and examine a person’s intentions. So, there is no difference between intentions for my sake and for the sake of others.

Philosophy does not study how to exit ourselves toward others, to raise and lower our desires, how to work when you are in an ascent or descent of desires and intentions, and so on. That is, Kabbalah is a science and huge internal spiritual psychology.

Question: Can we say that philosophers are people who studied under Kabbalists, but did not achieve the understanding of the Creator; that is, they did not acquire a screen, but simply remained at the level of knowledge and then developed a science called “philosophy”?

Answer: Of course. Since they could not attain the upper world and the Creator, they began to develop it in the direction of logical thinking, using their mind and conclusions.

Therefore, philosophy is, of course, not a science. Today, only those who still want to spend their lives in fruitless thoughts become philosophers.

Comment: In Kabbalah, one must attain, feel, the Creator, and not just believe in Him. There are practically no methods that say that you must reach the level of the Creator and only then can you understand His goal and His attitude toward you.

Answer: There is a big confusion between Kabbalah and other methodologies regarding beliefs and attainment because the other methods practice blind faith: I agree with a certain postulate, thus, for me it becomes the truth.

Kabbalah doesn’t practice that. Nothing is taken on faith. Everything is attained. It is explained in a very interesting sentence: “The judge has only what his eyes can see.” It means that eyesight is the most precise and important organ of perception of reality. Therefore, what you see is considered the  truth. This is the only thing that can be relied on, everything else can be disregarded.

Also, in our world, the court witnesses are asked: “Did you see?” “No, I heard.” “Having heard” is not proof. If you saw it, which is thoroughly investigated under cross examination, such testimony is accepted as the truth.

Question: What does “seeing and hearing the Creator” mean?

Answer: Attainment of the Creator, as it is in our world, happens in sounds and pictures. The sounds, as in “I’ve heard the voice.” In addition, I saw a vision, which is considered as fully reliable proof.

Question: So, to see or to hear the Creator are different levels of attainment? But is this talking about seeing with our own eyes?

Answer: No. We’re discussing inner vision and hearing, which have no connection with our corporeal organs of perception. Vision is attainment in the light of Hochma, and hearing, in the light of Hassadim.

Seeing the Creator is the most profound level of attainment, understanding, and feeling. While hearing is a much lower level, it is still an attainment.

Remark: In Kabbalah, a book, a source written by a Kabbalist even several thousand years ago, plays a very important role and is a means of spiritual attainment. For example, The Book of Zohar. In psychology, this is not so.

My Comment: Kabbalistic sources do not change, while texts of any books concerning psychology, politics, and everything humanity does, except for the natural sciences, are constantly changing because a person changes.

Therefore, what was written by psychologists 100 to 150 years ago or philosophers 500 or 1,000 years ago, today, of course, is no longer relevant. If the ancient Greek philosophers believed that the soul can be exhaled and inhaled, now no one has such primitive thinking about it.

Kabbalah, however, operates always with the same tools and objects as before.

Question: Does it mean that if we met a Kabbalist who lived 2,000 to 3,000 or 500 years ago, we would find a common language with him?

Answer: We would not only find a common language, but also would learn from him!

We would have a common language, that is, an absolute understanding of each other, and it would be interesting to talk to this person. Besides, we would have a common spoken language.

For example, if a modern French person met a French person who lived 500 years ago, they would not understand each other. Or take, for example, the Cyrillic alphabet created by Cyril and Methodius in which the letters and all kinds of circles have nothing to do with the modern alphabet.

Yet, Hebrew never changed. After all, there are laws according to which each letter must be precisely the way it is since its outline comes from the conformance of spiritual forces. In addition, the combination of Hebrew letters is nothing more than signs for expressing feelings of a person who has attainment of the Creator. That is why it never changes.

The Creator Is a Never-Changing Constant

Remark: Most spiritual practices state that the Creator changes His attitude toward a person depending on the person’s behavior. Based on this, a lot of various practices have been established that discuss how to interact with the Creator.

Kabbalah tells us that the Creator is a substance or law of nature that has no change of attitude toward a person.

My Comment: The Creator is an unchanging constant. We are the ones who change, and it seems to us that the world is changing in relation to us. In reality, the world is my reflection and I am the only one that changes.

Question: But we see that sometimes the upper force has a positive effect on us and sometimes it is negative. What does it depend on?

Answer: This is because I am changing and the force called the Creator is constant. The absolute cannot change because He is perfect. It is the property of utter goodness, ultimate connection, absolute love.

I am changing, and depending on my changes in relation to the Creator, it seems to me that He is the one who changes; thus, I see Him sometimes as good and sometimes as evil.

For example, a mother always loves her child equally. But if you ask the child, he would tell you: “Mom is bad today and yesterday she was good.” That is, he is interpreting his mother’s behavior according to his own conduct.

Remark: The subject of the study of the wisdom of Kabbalah is the most internal part of a person—the intention. No other science explores this.

For example, psychology explores only feelings, emotions, all kinds of reactions of a person, and desires.

My Comment: In addition, psychology also explores intention, but it is not a science because in our world there are no clear possibilities to measure and compare a person’s psychological parameters.

Kabbalah, however, as a science about intentions, gives us a tool for a completely different approach. Usually, we evaluate a person according to his or her actions and their results, whereas Kabbalah evaluates a person according to his or her intentions. That is the difference. After all, in our world I can perform bad actions with good intentions and vice versa. Bad intentions can sometimes cause good actions.

In general, revealing a person’s intentions is of primal importance. After all, our intentions are what we are, and our actions and desires depend not on us, but arise in us gradually in the course of our physical development.

Two Worlds: Roots and Branches

Remark: Throughout history and to this day, there are several thousand belief systems in the world.

If we look at reality from the perspective of Kabbalah, on one hand, there is a constant development of human society and beliefs as a cultural phenomenon. On the other hand, there is internal change in humanity, i.e., our desires are changing, and as a result of this, our beliefs change from pagan to monotheism, etc.

What is the difference between Kabbalah and various beliefs from the perspective of internal development? For example, there is a very important rule in Kabbalah that all the processes occurring in the spiritual worlds must manifest in the material world at least once.

My Comment: The spiritual worlds are the root of everything that occurs, and our world is a consequence or a branch of that root. Therefore, everything that exists in the upper worlds must somehow manifest itself in our world, at least once, in some particular form.

For instance, a very powerful force or some particular action in the upper world might manifest in our world as a barely noticeable occurrence or force.

The fact is that the upper root must always come in contact with our world and create its branch in it. We, proceeding from that branch, can learn something about the root itself.

Question: What is the significance of the science of Kabbalah for our generation?

Answer: The significance of the science of Kabbalah is not theoretical, but purely practical. When humanity comes to a state of hopelessness, not knowing how to move forward, what it exists for, and what guides it, then a need for the science of Kabbalah arises in it. Before that, it does not need it, especially since the science of Kabbalah does not offer itself to anyone. It is hiding inside humanity in a state of preparation because Kabbalists develop and prepare it for popularization, dissemination, and application.

Now we have come to a state when Kabbalah can be revealed to the world. But until our time, it was practically hidden.

Question: Baal HaSulam writes that Kabbalah reveals the Creator to every person in the world. Did people need this before?

Answer: No, and today they do not need it. After all, a person does not need truth, but needs what will give him some comfort, satisfaction, and answers to the minor issues in his life.

Question: But I don’t think that someone would refuse to reveal the Creator if he knew that it were possible to reveal Him.

Answer: No. Even of those who come today and listen about the possibility of the revelation of the Creator, the upper world, the next level of humanity’s development, only a few remain with us.

Question: Is it possible that people do not want the Creator that Kabbalah offers?

Answer: Perhaps.

What Is the Influence of the Upper Light?

Question: In the article “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” item 155, Baal HaSulam describes how the upper light works. He says that Kabbalists obligated each person to study the wisdom of Kabbalah only in order to attract upon ourselves this light that changes us.

What is the influence of the light? How can I feel this transformation on myself and into whom can I turn?

Answer: You can feel the influence of the light on yourself, in your personal changes and personal qualities, such as desires, intentions, qualities, in the more clearly depicted purpose of development.

Question: Am I becoming more moral?

Answer: Maybe not. However, you increasingly understand what is going on. You might not yet be changing, but if you are studying the wisdom of Kabbalah, the upper light is already affecting you and preparing you to want change.

Question: Does it mean that the upper light is not the Creator yet? There is the Creator and there is the upper light, right?

Answer: No, there is only one force, but we call it different names according to the way it manifests itself. We call the upper intention “the Creator,” and we call His influence upon us “the light.”
