On the Purim holiday, according to tradition, it is customary to make triangular cakes “Haman’s ears” (“Ozney Aman“). They are also called “Haman’s pockets” (“Kisei Aman“), which were supposed to be filled egoistically, but the evil forces did not succeed, and in the end we snack on them.

In addition, it is said that on Purim one must fall into such a state of intoxication in order not to distinguish Haman from Mordecai because in the corrected state we come to the fact that both Haman and Mordecai act on bestowal, which is called receiving for the sake of bestowal.

This is how the whole of nature is corrected. This state is a complete correction of egoism created by the Creator. We need to come to it. The Purim holiday symbolizes the absolute correction of all nature. We hope that it will be achieved in our time.

This is something that is still hidden from us. But now we are going through the process of correcting our egoism and are quite close to its completion.

Question: When Queen Esther asks King Ahasuerus to spare her people, he replies that he has already given instructions to destroy the Jews in all 127 countries and cannot cancel it. But he gives them the opportunity to defend themselves.

Why can’t he revoke his decree?

Answer: He has no right, because egoism must remain in nature. The whole of nature is under egoism, it is interconnected. The only thing that can be added is to do everything for the sake of connection and love. Therefore, it is said that the Kelim (vessels) come from Haman and their filling occurs through Mordechai.

Just as it is said in the Torah: “The hands of Esau, and the voice of Jacob.” Meaning, we should receive Kelim precisely from egoism. Corrected egoism is the vessel that will be filled with the revelation of the Creator.

But still the people are given the opportunity to defend themselves. This means making a restriction, a screen, and reflected light on yourself and filling yourself for the sake of others, becoming a transmitting link. Then all the light of infinity will pass through you. And you don’t have to be afraid that you will get it for yourself, because you are already aimed in advance to pass it on to others.

Michael Laitman, On Quora: “What is Purim? Why is it significant?“

Purim represents a state called “the end of correction,” where humanity merges into perfect harmonious connection with nature.

The Kli (vessel) at the end of correction merges with the light of the end of correction—the Kli of Ein Sof (infinity) and the light of Ein Sof—where we feel eternity and perfection, and where we leave behind all of our problems and sorrows, and we enter into a boundless world full of light and joy. That is why it is said that the day should be full of wine and other alcoholic drinks.

It is significant because the more we emulate the sensation of existing in the perfect eternal world, where there are no conflicts and no problems, but only one light filling reality, then we will draw that state of perfect connection to exist among us and fill us.

Comment: The story “Megilat Ester” (“The Scroll of Esther”) begins with a great celebration. King Ahasuerus arranges a feast for his courtiers, which lasts 180 days. Then this feast continues for seven more days for all the people.

Moreover, the story lists the dishes and drinks in detail, as if it is of great interest to us what they drank and ate.

My Response: The fact is that this text encodes extensive information about nature about how we prepare ourselves for receiving the upper light, the revelation of the Creator, and so on. Everything is described under the guise of a meal.

A meal is the phenomenon of the revelation of the Creator.

Question: Why is it indicated that the feast lasted 180 days? What does it mean?

Answer: 180 days or half a year is allocated from above for the feast, and we must add from below in the form of a feast, a blessing in it and other fulfillments, we add through our presence to the complete Kli (Vessel), that is, to the complete state.

In addition, in the story of Purim, King Ahasuerus  represents the Creator. That is, Ahasuerus is Keter, and his associates are Hochma and Bina. Therefore, by a feast lasting 180 days, we mean Ohr Hozer (reflected light) and Ohr Yashar (direct light)—9 Sefirot and 10 Sefirot in each of them.

Then, it speaks about seven days of the feast for the people. Seven is a very remarkable number in Kabbalah.

The soul consists of two parts: GAR—Keter, Hochma, and Bina are the first three upper Sefirot or Rosh (Head) of the soul. Then comes the body of the soul: Hesed, Gevura, Tifferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut—7 Sefirot.

The division of the 10 parts of the soul into three and seven stems from its work for bestowal. Therefore, the number seven is very important. It is in these seven Sefirot, that is, desires directed at bestowal, at the connection with each other and with the Creator, that all our work is done.

Comment: Can you imagine, encoding everything like that!

My Response: No, Kabbalists simply express themselves in this language, they understand what they are talking about. And if you do not understand, so be it. It is just like when you go into the garage and hear that something has short-circuited in the car, something has gone wrong, but you do not understand what exactly: the battery, the distributor or something else?

Question: On Purim it is customary to read “Megillat Ester” (“The Scroll of Esther”). “Megillah” in Hebrew means “revealing,” and “Ester“—hiding.

We see that throughout history, humanity reveals something, but still a huge amount of information is hidden from people. Would you like to learn what is hidden from us?

Answer: Absolutely everything is hidden. If we make mistakes at every step, do something wrong, and do not know what will happen tomorrow or in a thousand years, this is a concealment.

Moreover, the concealment is such that we are in a state of revelation at the animal level, which comes after the inanimate and vegetative. As for something more, that is, we cannot break through time.

I am located inside time. It envelops me from all sides and I cannot pass through it.

Comment: But about 200 laws of nature have been discovered over the past few 100 years.

My Response: It doesn’t matter! These are the mechanical and physical laws of our nature. What do I get from this? The most important thing is time. I want to rise above time. I want to see everything as a witness, not as a participant, from afar, from all over, outside the factor of time, so that it does not limit me in anything.

First of all, this is a cover-up. It leads to the fact that an upper force is hidden from me, which controls all nature, includes it in itself, and holds everything in itself. Therefore, revealing the highest controlling force of nature, which is called the Creator, is our most important task.

We are at the center of the events of Purim, at the center of the battle between the Creator and Haman, the power of good and the power of evil. It is us who decide the outcome of their battle, and therefore, we are called Israel, that is, aspiring straight to the Creator.

And the Creator is the root for both Mordechai, the force of good, and for Haman, the force of evil. And therefore, it is said in Megillat Esther that the city of Shushan was in turmoil and did not know with whom the truth lies and what the Creator wants.

After all, the Creator allows Haman, the force of evil, to rule. Our whole world is driven by egoistic forces. Or maybe the Creator wants us to aspire toward the forces of love and unification no matter what? But we see how weak the force of good is, that is, Mordechai, who sits at the city gates. And Haman is close to the King and controls the entire kingdom.

Therefore, the story of Purim is called Megillat Ester, that is, “the revelation of the hidden.” And it is specially built in such a way as to give us the freedom of choice, to decide for ourselves with whom we want to go, with whom the truth lays: with the force of unification or disconnection.

And although our whole life is subject to the force of separation that forces everything to be divided into mine and yours, the true victory is not in subordinating one to the other, but in mutual fulfillment, in helping each other. Neither one tries to win, but on the contrary, each strives to yield to the other and act directly opposite to egoism. And that is how one wins. We will see how in the conflicts taking place in the world today it is the quiet power that wins over and not the one that fights trying to subdue others.

In the tale of Purim, Mordechai uncovers a conspiracy against the king and saves him. Yet, the king elevates another person, Haman, and makes him a minister, the second in charge after himself.

Haman is one of the descendants of Amalek (an acronym of “Al Menat Lekabel,” “For one’s own sake”). He is the representative of egoistic desires in a person.

And Mordechai, who saved the king, gets nothing for it. After all, the quality of bestowal requires you to give. To give what? Everything! When? Now! For how long? Forever!

Bestowal is just to bestow and receive nothing in return. Otherwise, it is not bestowal, but some kind of bargaining.

However, nature constantly grows egoism within us, it develops, it becomes bigger and bigger. Therefore, the power of Haman grows, he brings everyone to their knees, except Mordechai.

Mordechai declares that he is Yehudi (from the word “Yehud,” “Unity”) and therefore does not bow before egoism. Haman, who represents the ego, demands that everyone obey him and work for egoism. But this is against the basic law of nature, against the Creator.

Those who understand this cannot accept it. Mordechai cannot accept it either. Others, however, are in a state when it is not revealed to them as reliably as to Mordechai that the highest force in the world is the quality of bestowal and love, altruism.

They see how everything is controlled in an egoistic way and everyone who uses their egoism thrives.

Therefore, our egoistic intentions always demand some kind of benefit for themselves so that we fill them and constantly take care of them. If suddenly there is a desire to do something for someone without getting anything in return, then, of course, egoism resists such an inclination and tries to kill it. Therefore, Haman tries to kill Mordechai in every possible way.

Question: In the story of Purim, King Ahasuerus invites Queen Vashti to a feast, but she refuses to participate in it. It’s very strange. How can it be that the queen refused?

Answer: Queen Vashti personifies all of creation (the common desire). And the creation is not yet ready to attend such a big feast of the Creator or the King, because not everything has been corrected yet. Therefore, Vashti, being not ready to receive, refuses to take part in the celebration.

Then the king decides to change this desire, meaning to change the queen. He announces a beauty contest and chooses a new queen, a new desire, which in this state can still receive. Thus Esther, Mordecai’s niece, becomes the queen.

Mordecai is one of the people who lived in the king’s palace. When he was young, he uncovered a plot against the king and saved him. From the point of view of Kabbalah, this means that both in the spiritual world and in our world there are many forces for and against, positive and negative.

By the king we mean the Creator Himself. Therefore, there are forces both against Him and for Him.

The story of Purim tells how the regrouping of forces takes place in order to lead to the absolute revelation of all the governance of the Creator.

Among all the days in the year there is one special day, which is called “Purim” from the word “Lot” (Pur), the chance that you will win a prize, get lucky. On the one hand, we must hope for a happy fate and prepare for it, but on the other hand, everything comes from above and depends on the Creator, on the way He will make this holiday, this day for us.

In fact, we are not talking about a holiday, but about a special spiritual state that is above everything for which we can prepare. This is why it is called Purim, like a drawing of a lot, which determines who gets lucky.

We are required to give the “awakening from below,” that is, the hope that we will be rewarded with a great light and, as a result, a great correction of our desires. We also need to have the strength to receive this great light in order to bestow, and to attain the entire creation, the entire state of the final correction, which is already waiting to be revealed to us.

Even though spirituality is above time and space, nonetheless, there are symbols of spiritual phenomena in our world, and therefore, there is a special illumination during these days that we can use. Therefore, when we study articles about the Purim holiday on this day, we too become incorporated in this special light that can influence and advance us.

The holiday of Purim is dedicated to the events that took place two and a half thousand years ago in Ancient Babylon, when the royal minister Haman decided to destroy all Jews. The Jews (Yehudim) represent the desire for connection, for unity, and Haman is an inner force that prevents us from uniting, that is, resists correction.

We just need to yearn to be together, above egoistic desire, despite its resistance. Everything depends on how much we will be able to maintain this unity, despite all the disturbances that are so massive today, come from the lowest degree, and affect our very existence starting from ordinary life and up to spiritual heights. But we nevertheless want to be together and cover all crimes with love.

Despite the fact that there may be disagreements and even hatred between friends, we still want to be in the same heart with them. Crimes are sent by the Creator, and we want to rise above them with help of our connection and we ask the Creator for strength for this.

With all our resistance and rejection, we nevertheless want to unite so that all the pluses and minuses, all the forces of connection and separation, would gather together, that is, a Kli in which the Creator will be revealed is built. If we build connection above separation, then we win big.

The main thing is to ask for connection between everyone and the revelation of one force that will unite us. Connecting with friends is the most correct action and it directs us to the final correction. The Creator purposely broke the common soul, and we need to ask Him to connect it back together.

Therefore, we make every effort to connect, and discover that we are completely incapable of any action toward connection, from the smallest up to the one common, largest one. Then we ask the Creator for help. In this way, we correct our Kli by clinging to the Creator in all the ways that have been revealed inside the shattering, and thus, we reach the final correction.

Costumes, masks, double identities. Behind the joyful celebration of Purim there is a profound story about good and evil. Unlocking its secret meaning can save the world today especially when reality looks so gloomy and uncertain.

Thus, this holiday is meaningful not only to the Jewish people, but to all of humanity.

The customary reading of “The Scroll of Esther” during the Purim festival does not merely celebrate an event that happened a long time ago. Instead, it describes a spiritual state not yet apparent that stands before us and that will be discovered as soon as we unite. Indeed, Megilat Ester or The Scroll of Esther refers to “the revelation of the concealed,” because in Hebrew, “guilui” means revelation, and “ester” from “hastara” means concealment.

In the story of Purim Haman raised the claim to King Ahasuerus that the Jews should be killed because they were separated, and were thus deemed unnecessary: “There is a certain people, scattered and dispersed.”

In response, Mordechai appealed to King Ahasuerus for mercy on the Jews through Queen Esther, but she said it was impossible for her to help them as long as they remained dispersed and not united. So Mordechai went on a mission to pass on this call for unity of the Jewish people. When they eventually come together and unite, Esther was able to persuade King Ahasuerus to have mercy on them.

As with all the stories from the Torah, the characters and the interaction between them represent attributes and powers that play out in our thoughts, desires, attitudes, and relationships. Mordechai symbolizes a positive force that cares deeply for everyone because the future of the world depends on the development of the sublime qualities of love and giving, and on the development of a perfect integral connection between all parts of reality and all human beings. On the other hand, evil Haman symbolizes the negative force, an egoistic tendency to control everyone else, to bend everyone under us, to take everything that is possible from them, to exploit them to our advantage.

“Man is a small world,” our sages explained. It means that within each of us lie all these forces described in The Scroll of Esther, even if we do not feel them. They define the direction of development that will save us from the egoistic struggles of self-benefit at the expense of others, which threaten to degenerate the human race into self-extinction.

The more we develop, the more these powers intensify. The ruthless will to rule and control increasingly surfaces within people and great forces of separation operate to tear us apart. Therefore, the core message of the Purim story is that unity will be our salvation, and that our neglect in overcoming the differences between us endangers, harms, and may even annihilate us.

In other words, the elevated state that humanity is so eager to achieve and that is so desperately needed these days is concealed now. As soon as we learn to connect properly with one another, above our egoism, we will remove the root of all evil from our lives, and a world of all good will be revealed.
