Round Restriction of Infinity

232.08Then there remained a vacant place, air, and an empty space, from the very middle point. And that restriction was even around that middle, empty point, in a way that the place of that space was round on all its sides, completely even. It was not in a shape of a square, with a perpendicular angle, for Ein Sof, too, had restricted Himself like a circle, even on all sides (Baal HaSulam, The Study of the Ten Sefirot, Vol. 1, Part 1, Chapter One, #4).

From the side of the light, there are no degrees, and it fills everything equally, this is why Malchut, having felt herself as receiving from the light, made an equal restriction. At this point there is no difference between top and bottom, no degrees, only a completely equal attitude toward any reception for one’s own sake that was revealed within her.

The restriction acts the same on the smallest and the greatest egoistic desire. It is as if Malchut says: “If you are not directed toward bestowal, then you do not belong to me!” and she distances all such qualities from herself.

This is a very subtle principle. It shows a pure, global, infinitely just and demanding approach, which gives us a glimpse of the state of the final correction (Gmar Tikkun). In it, the tiniest thing carries equal weight; if even the smallest part of the whole is not corrected, it is as if nothing is corrected at all.

There may be billions of desires, but among them there are no big or small, no top or bottom, right or left, no distinctions whatsoever. The nature of the desire doesn’t matter: one may want to eat, another to drink, a third to rest. What matters is whether you want it egoistically or for the sake of bestowal? Such strict, selective principles act in spirituality.

Everything Depends on the Creator

612Question: From the excerpts we study, it follows that as a result of the Creator’s calling, a person wants to return to repentance and may feel shame or lowliness. Is such a feeling a criterion for checking whether I hear the voice of the Creator or the voice of my ego?

Answer: No, that is not quite correct. The fact is that we must constantly be directed toward the Creator and continually seek connection with Him but not claim that it depends only on us and not at all on the Creator.

Everything we feel depends on the Creator. Even if these are unchanging states, they still come from the Creator. We perceive them, change in accordance with them, and in this way, through our constant changes, we become more and more directed toward Him.

Question: Is it correct to distinguish that thoughts directed toward unity and for the sake of others come from the Creator, while those that pull me to go and sleep come from my ego?

Answer: Both come from the Creator, but we must differentiate between them.

Everything Exists in the Light

58Question: Is thought the light? When can we separate something that does not belong to it from the light?

Answer: No, we cannot speak of anything other than what is contained within the light.

Question: So desire is also the light?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Everything is the light. And the self-determination of creation, that is, the point of Yesh mi-ayin (“existence from absence”), is it also in the light?

Answer: Yes, everything exists in the light.

A Question Is Part of Darkness

32.02Question: How does the expression “One, Unique, and Unified” correspond with the understanding of what is “the higher than the highest”?

Answer: Later we will study TES and see what this means.

One can ask thousands of questions. The main thing is that they flow together along the same channel that Baal HaSulam leads us.

Question: It is said that the Creator produces light and creates darkness. Does darkness, meaning, evil exist in the plan of creation or only in our imagination?

Answer: In principle, any question that arises within us is part of the darkness that is not yet understood by a person, and therefore one finds oneself in such a state.

Who Am I Asking?

239Question: “He” means the light that exists in infinity, and “His Name” is the place within the light of infinity, the desire. When I want to turn to the Creator and ask on behalf of my friends, what should I imagine, to whom am I addressing?

Answer: You are addressing the force that gave rise to everything, within which we exist, by which we are surrounded, and which we feel. This is what you call “the Creator.”

Reception Is from the Creator

261Question: Do we earn the attainment we come to ourselves or is it a gift from the Creator?

Answer: That we receive everything from the Creator is a well-known fact, described by the great Kabbalists. But how to regard this reception, whether as a gift or as a merit, as payment or as something else, and how to relate to it, is something we still need to clarify.

Question: Is what comes from the Creator in any case is felt as something not connected to your own effort?

Answer: There are many relations between us and the Creator when we don’t feel that He is giving us something and we are receiving it. Take even our corporeal life. We don’t feel that what we receive comes from Him, that it enlivens us and gives us the possibility to exist.
