Play to Develop

237Play is the foundation of the development of nature. This is the most serious thing in the world. When we stop playing, we stop developing. We develop only through play.

While playing, a child does not know what he is doing, but in the process, he develops his senses and abilities. And then, when he starts learning, he only fills in the opportunities that he once developed through play. Therefore, proper play is the foundation of a person’s entire being.

Spiritual development, progressing from stage to stage according to the law of negation of negation, ascent from lower to higher, can only be carried out in a play—when you do not know your next stage because you have not yet reached it, but you strive for it, you model it, you try it out.

This element is called “play,” when nothing is known, everything is unpredictable, and on a whim, like a child, you are constantly trying to find out: “But how?” This is what our development is all about.

And when you begin studying what has already been discovered, what has already been chewed up and prepared for you, then this “how” disappears, and you stop developing. You simply stuff your brain cells with some information, and your development ends there. You are getting smart.

And in spiritual work, when we talk about that we must ascend to the next level, to the next dimension, then naturally, our path can only be a play.

Add Connection

938.04Comment: You say that we must spread the ideas of Kabbalah in the world and only through this will we progress.

My Response: That is correct, but you still must emphasize your inner connection in which the Creator should reveal Himself. One can only happen through the other.

Here we face a paradox where one seems to contradict the other. This contradiction must be removed because as a result of our populism, we come to neglect the real internal work toward unity upon which the success of everything depends.

On one hand, everything depends on our dissemination in the world, but only under the condition that we ourselves are strong internally.

It is now becoming evident that we must internally add a connection between us and in it achieve the clear revelation of the Creator according to the law of the equality of form. Then this will manifest in the world.

Is It Possible to Force Ourselves to Come to Unity?

65Question: You say that the correct result of studying The Book of Zohar is a desire for unity. Does this desire arise from the person himself, or is it something he must force himself to achieve?

Answer: There is a rule that there is no coercion in spirituality as spirituality is revealed only in the desire for it. Therefore, it is impossible to force oneself into spirituality without truly desiring it.

You approach spirituality indirectly by engaging in seemingly unrelated or alternative actions not strictly aimed at bestowal and love, which nonetheless draw the light. This light corrects you and moves you toward the quality of bestowal. That is how it works.

Although a person exists in a state opposite to spirituality—the quality of egoism, the desire to subordinate everything to oneself, to be filled, and to dominate others—when they begin studying Kabbalah, an interesting symbiosis arises. There is a connection between their efforts, which appear to be aimed at bestowal, love, unity, and bringing all of creation into a single system, which in fact already is although it is concealed from us, and we must reveal it in our unity with everyone

It seems that a person both desires and does not desire, wants and does not want, understands, realizes, yet cannot achieve anything through his inner qualities. However, in the end, the force of the upper light influences him and changes him.

This means that we are not required to artificially or falsely strive for something we do not truly want.

Talks about the Steps of the Ladder, Part 63

Why Is the Torah Called “the Names of God”?

The “names of God” refer to the way the light dresses in the vessel, and how the vessel experiences the light’s qualities. For instance, in relation to the saying, “As He is merciful, so you should be merciful,” if we correct ourselves to be merciful, then we also sense the Creator as merciful. This is called attaining or revealing the holy name, “Merciful.”

The Torah is composed of lights that dress within us that enable us to experience the Creator. The Creator is the totality of light, and we receive this totality incrementally according to our degree of correction.

If we receive the entire Torah—all the lights together—we sense the entirety of the Creator and experience Him fully.

Atmosphere of Friendship

528.01Question: What is the relevant form of demand toward a friend who, for example, does not attend the lesson?

Answer: I think there’s no need to single yourself out before the friends. It is necessary to cultivate such an attitude within the group that the one who violates feels they are excluding himself from the group.

Question: How can such an atmosphere be created?

Answer: This should simply be recorded in the group’s annals and accepted by everyone.

Questions about Spiritual Work—219

281.02Question: What should I do if I want to include a friend’s deficiency within myself, if I want to help him, but I see his resistance?

Answer: Continue. Not for too long, but continue. The most important thing you can do is embrace him and, together, move to a new place.

Question: How can I open myself to the outer circle in order to bestow to them, without judging them, but instead lift them toward the Creator?

Answer: For this, you must first prepare vessels that will allow you to elevate others, and only then begin this work.

Question: You said that if we see that a friend does not strive for mutual responsibility, we should distance ourselves from him. What does it mean to distance yourself from a friend?

Answer: On the journey must take with us only those who will join us in performing all actions together: ascents, descents, and so on.

Let’s Hold Hands Friends

938.04Question: The egoism of each person paints pictures that distance us from mutual responsibility. How can we grab our friends’ hands in time and hold them tightly to enter the implementation of true mutual responsibility?

Answer: You need to desire to be in one heart with your friend, and then you will quickly feel his hands supporting you.

The Creator never acts directly on a person but only through others. Therefore, you must hold on to your friends, and through them, you will feel the direction in which the Creator is guiding you.

Question: What preliminary actions can break the chains of a friend’s egoism, apart from prayer? How else can I help them?

Answer: I don’t think there is anything else.

Ask for Everything

289Question: Usually we ask the Creator, “Connect us with the ten, give us love for our friends,” which means we ask about the future while living in the present. How can we ask about the present?

Answer: Ask for everything, from the greatest requests to the smallest ones. The Creator will arrange them in order and give you what you need.

Question: You said that the connection with a friend should feel the same as the connection with the Creator. How can we feel the connection with the Creator within the connection with friends in the ten?

Answer: You also need to ask for this and try to penetrate deeper into your request to the Creator, and you will see that He will make it happen.

Question: How can we deeply penetrate this request to the Creator?

Answer: You will feel what you are lacking. That is already a matter of feeling.
