Despite Doubts

510.01And the more he works, the suffering increases proportionally. Finally, the suffering and the labor accumulate to a certain amount where the Creator has mercy on him and gives him a taste in the servitude of the Creator, as it is written, “Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high” (Baal HaSulam, Shamati 219. Devotion).

Question: What does it mean “Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high”?

Answer: When a person goes against his desire, above his natural powers, and wants to continue following the instructions of the Creator at all costs, then after this struggle that he wages with himself to fulfill the desire of the upper, the Creator shows mercy to him and gives him the gift of bestowal (Lishma).

Question: At first, we have to go in compulsion and trembling. Is the quality of awe acquired through our efforts or is it also given by the Creator?

Trembling is the fear of falling off the spiritual path and moving away from the Creator instead of holding on to Him despite all doubts and problems.
