One Person Brings The World To Either An Ascent Or A Descent

Dr. Michael LaitmanThose parts of “the created” by the Creator’s desire, that can awaken towards the spiritual, are called Israel. And those that are not yet able to awaken are called the “nations of the world.”

These parts exist within every person, in accordance with his desire. The wisdom of Kabbalah does not look at the bodies but only at a person’s desires.

Also, as soon as a person acquires the desire for the spiritual, he begins to be called Israel. But as soon as this desire disappears, fades, and begins to hide among his egoistic desires, he immediately begins to belong to the “nations of the world.” And this pertains to all of us.

The egoistic desire that is referred to as “nations of the world” also divides into two parts: “the righteous of the world” and “the beasts” (these want to hurt their neighbor), and the other ones achieve what they want, but not at another’s expense.

All the desires divide this way into these four groups:

  • Egoistic desires called the “nations of the world”: harmful and harmless
  • Desires that are inclined to “bestow,” which are called Israel: those devoted to bestowal and those that are not.

When one studies Kabbalah, he inclines the entire world towards the good, because he attracts the Upper Light with his studies, which causes the world of egoism to become kinder. But when one only studies the regular Torah (the open Torah), only the physical observance of the commandments, he worsens the suffering of the world (he inclines the world towards blame).

There is no state in between. This is why every person connected to the Torah must begin to study Kabbalah! Otherwise, he harms the world.

The Zohar tells us about this and Baal HaSulam explains the meaning of this.

The entire system is made in such way that when people only take care of the corporeal observance of the commandments without studying Kabbalah, they lead towards a state when all other parts of the soul, which do not pertain to spiritual work, but only the egoistic desire, gain a greater strength and feel more opportunities to realize their ego.

That is, these people, who only do the corporeal observance, evoke all the evil, which later becomes revealed in the other three parts of the soul.

And those souls that pertain to the three lower parts do not posses any freedom of will of whether to be good or bad. Only those who study the Torah have a choice: they can incline the world towards good or evil. And the highest group, which studies the “inner Torah,” or Kabbalah, have little choice if they do everything that depends on them!

The entire choice belongs to those who exclusively study the “external Torah”; this is the most problematic part. Everything depends on whether they will also begin to study Kabbalah, and to what extent.

Those who can study it but do not, absolutely harm the world. But those who study it, though not to their full ability, they benefit the world to a greater or lesser extent, but they do not harm it. This is a big difference!

If all the people who have some kind of connection to spirituality studied Kabbalah at least a little, there would be no evil in the world! There would be no crises, no problems. This is the key to success, nothing else needs correcting, not the banking system, nor ecology. And nothing else will save us from our misfortunes.

The only thing that will help is for all the people who are connected to the Torah to study specifically the inner Torah, instead of the external Torah, and then the entire world will come to goodness; all the people will only feel the desire to do good deeds.

This is the conclusion made in The Zohar and by all the Kabbalists of the following generations.

A Very Simple Scheme

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If only a person who has the point in the heart has the freedom of choice, does this mean that one must not demand for others to change? This means that everything depends on us?

Answer: We do not demand anything! I always keep repeating that Kabbalah needs to be disseminated in a very discreet manner. It’s only for those who want it.

We should not solicit those who are not interested, “There is no coercion in the spiritual!” We only need to show to those people who already have acquired the desire for spirituality, “the point in the heart,” that they have a place to go with this desire and develop it.

After all, this person feels bad. He does not understand why he does not know where to realize a desire that he is feeling. So, let him find out where he can realize it, and we do not address the rest. Let them stay as they were.

However, in our world, there is a nation called Israel. These are souls that once were on the spiritual level, but have fallen from it into corporeal desire.

They all must study Kabbalah and correct themselves. This is because they have been through the breaking; at one time they already had risen to the spiritual and fallen.

Even if the point in the heart is not awakened in them right now, they still have it, and we must bring this knowledge to them, and especially those who study the “external Torah,” instead of the “inner Torah.” They must absolutely study Kabbalah, and this is the only way the world can be corrected.

There is no other possibility to improve it and free it from all the misfortunes. All the problems in the world happen because of the lack of Light!

The only way to attract the Light to the world is by studying Kabbalah, which attracts the Surrounding Light. There are no other ways to do this.

Kabbalah is the means of connection with the Upper Light, the revelation of the Creator to the creatures, the revelation of Light to the desire to receive. It connects us to the Light. It teaches you to build an anti-egoistic screen.

These are the only three components: desire, Light, and the screen in the middle. All of mankind is on the bottom, the Creator is on top, and Kabbalah is between them as the means of attaining the screen.

This is why anyone who wishes to get rid of all misfortunes needs to try to come as close to it as possible because he attracts the Light by doing this. And the way we will feel in our desires depends only on the Light.

Kabbalists About The Book of Zohar, Part 2

Studying The Book of Zohar for one hour brings about more results than studying a regular interpretation for a year.—”Kisle Melech,” Tikkun 43, Chapter 60

This is necessary today to protect us from evil because, where previous generations were closer to the Creator, our generation is distant from the Creator. Only Kabbalah can protect us.—Ya, Tzemach, “Preface to Etz Chaim

The prohibition on studying Kabbalah was in place only up to the year 5250. From then on, the prohibition was lifted and, on the contrary, there was a directive to study The Book of Zohar. From the year 5300 on, everyone was obliged to study Kabbalah. Since the Mashiach will come as a consequence, we have no right to postpone this.—”Ohr HamA,” Preface).

If we study The Book of Zohar with children from nine or ten years old, we would bring the salvation closer.—”Keilot Yakov,” Chapter “Sod

Deliverance will come only through the power of The Book of Zohar.—”Kise Eliyau,” Chapter 4.

Today, it is urgently necessary to become proficient in Kabbalah. The Book of Zohar is necessary to pave the path to salvation.—Rav Kook, “Orot,” 57.

Why Jacob Is Afraid Of Esau

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Jacob is afraid of Esau, what is he afraid of?

Answer: Let’s say I came to visit you. Before coming over I had a good dinner and even though you offer different foods to me, I am not hungry, that is, my desire to receive pleasure is not big at all. I tell you: “You know, I do not want anything, but for you (for the sake of bestowal) I am willing to accept a small treat, for example tea and cake.” I receive my treat, and I feel no shame; I did it with the intention to please the host, and this makes both of us equal because when I do not receive for my own sake, it is referred to as giving to you, and this makes me full of self-respect.

We sit at the table, having a conversation, time is passing by and I start getting hungry. You say: “So, maybe you would like something?” But now, I really am hungry! I smell the food; they are “attacking” me! So what do I do? I am afraid to remain in this big desire. I am facing a big desire, will I be able to resist this big pleasure while having this big desire and can I perform the same action to please the host?

If I am acting for the sake of bestowal, I reveal the Creator, and if I do not attain it, I land in the so-called “hell”; I fall into the state called Esau rules over me.

This is called Jacob is afraid. He does not know whether he will be able to overcome his egoism, his desire to receive pleasure, because Esau is in it, he begins to demand, he is coming closer to Jacob and says: “We are brothers! Let us be together!” Our egoistic desire tells us: “Do you want spirituality? I am with you! Do you want to reach the Light? I love Light! Give it to me!”

We must push it away, confuse it, trick it, tell it, “All right, see you tomorrow,” and run as fast as we can and as far as we can. The Torah teaches us how to work with our egoism by gradually taking pieces from it for correction until we correct the entire egoism.

Do Not Lose Your Connection To Life

Dr. Michael LaitmanWhen reading The Zohar, we primarily need to think about the intention, as if I am planning on traveling and the main most important thing is for me to arrive at the correct destination.

But at the same time I need to do many things along the way. For example, if I need to go to another city, I get in the car, lock the doors, turn the ignition on, buckle up, and drive along many streets, sometimes even in the wrong direction, until I reach the main road. Why can’t I just go straight?

But the fact is that I consist of many systems, different desires, and I need to be connected with many conditions, parts of the common system of Adam (man), which operate in two directions: reception and bestowal. The different combinations of reception and bestowal are so complex and complicated that sometimes it is completely impossible to understand how a certain event or condition can relate to the goal; for example, horrible events like World War II and other catastrophes that cannot be justified. But every action brings us closer; we just do not see how it brings us closer. For this reason, intentions, actions, thoughts, and desires can become their absolute opposite, changing 180 degrees. But, at the same time, we must keep the goal.

Imagine what would happen if you forgot where you were going in the middle of the trip! Such illnesses occur in old age. This is not just a weak memory where you get in the car and don’t remember where you are going; it is a detachment from reality that occurs all the time. Such person can no longer take care of himself; he needs to be taken care of, like a child.

We have the same illness with respect to spirituality since we lose our intention! Every moment we lose the connection with life and forget: why we live, what we have done and are still doing, and for what purpose. This is an actual illness, and we need to fight it in every possible way otherwise we are not alive! When I lose the intention, I do not live a spiritual life! I live like an animal instead of a human!

Now tell me, how many moments in your life have you spent living like a human? How much effort have you put into being human? Are you at least trying to attain it? The number of these moments equals the number of times you have let the upper Light influence you. And you still want to attain some kind of result this way? You did not even give the Light a chance to work on you, maybe just ten minutes in ten years!

And now you count time by the calendar and complain that it has been ten years, how much longer? After all, it is written that this takes from three to five years! But what were you doing all this time?

You count time according to the clock turning, but did you spin with it around one intention? You did not? Then what are you demanding?

In other words, we all have Alzheimer’s, an absolute loss of memory, and we do not even suspect it. And how can we keep a pure intention this way? This is why there is mutual guarantee! Other people come to those who have lost their memory and help them! There is no other solution. So let us agree to keep the intention.
