Under The Great Act Of Creation

294.4Comment: Kabbalists say that The Book of Zohar does not write about our life.

My Response: What to write about?! About animals that improve themselves in their burrows, in their communication and actions? What are we doing in this world?!

Go up into space, see from the outside how the people live, what they are doing, and why they exist in general. We see how a huge egoistic force of nature twists people, constantly drags them into all sorts of nonsense, and pushes them inside their egoism.

Question: What should we do?

Answer: Explain to everyone that there is a higher goal! Otherwise, they will remain on the animal level.

All sorts of questions arise in them: “What am I living for? Why?” See what dramatic events are taking place in the world: globalization, the environmental and financial crises, the internal crisis in education, in everything! All this is moving forward.

We just need to tell people why this movement exists, that it is purposeful, so that they see it as an act of liberation from their low, limited lives.

In no way do I want them to think that we are somehow above them or consider their existence contemptuous. We ourselves also live in this, only we have already seen some light at the end of the path and know how to come to it. Therefore, we must explain it in a brotherly way, with love. After all, we are all under this great, dramatic act of creation.

“The Secret Of The Book Of Zohar” (Linkedin)

My new article on Linkedin “The Secret of The Book of Zohar

This Thursday evening, we will celebrate LAG ba Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer count, which begins the day after Passover and ends forty-nine days later, on the eve of the holiday of Shavuot. The 33rd day is very meaningful for several reasons, but one in particular captivates millions around the world: On that day, nineteen centuries ago, was the conclusion of the writing of The Book of Zohar, the seminal book in the wisdom of Kabbalah.

When Rashbi and his ten completed writing the book, they realized that humanity was not ready for it. In order to use this book of love correctly, humanity needed to feel how deeply it is immersed in hate. At that time, even though they themselves were in constant flight from the Romans, who wished to kill them, they knew that as a whole, the world had not revealed how hateful human nature really is. As a result, in yet another selfless act, they concealed the book that they had written so arduously.

There is a good reason why this day is celebrated as a great day for humankind: The Book of Zohar was written in a special way and for a special purpose. It was concealed for a reason and was later revealed for just that reason. And these days, we are living out this reason.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai (Rashbi) was a great kabbalist. He attained the highest degrees of spirituality and his name is mentioned countless times in the Mishnah and the Gemarah, the fundamental books in Judaism. However, Rashbi’s uniqueness is not in his superior spiritual attainment, but in his relentless efforts to share it with humankind. The spiritual world is the complete opposite of ours. While our world is based on egoism and destructive competition, the spiritual world is the negative image of ours, consisting of pure love and giving. This is why The Book of Zohar stresses, “Everything stands on love” (VaEtchanan, Item 146).

The basic unit in the spiritual world consists of ten subunits. These subunits are unique, and often contradicting expressions of love and giving, which complement each other to form a strong and stable structure called Partzuf. These subunits of love are called Sefirot, from the Hebrew word sapir [sapphire], which unite into the basic spiritual unit, called Partzuf. Subsequently, Partzufim [pl. for Partzuf] join together and build the entire spiritual world. Because the Sefirot are expressions of love and giving, and they form all that exists in spirituality, the entire spiritual world is one of love.

Because our world consists of pure egoism, or as the book of Genesis tells us, “The inclination of a man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Gen. 8:21), we are completely disconnected from the spiritual world. In fact, we’re so opposite from it that we cannot grasp it with our senses.

But Rashbi, who dedicated his life to connecting humanity with this world of love, had found a way to bridge the chasm. Together with his son, he assembled eight keen disciples who were willing to dedicate themselves to this noble task as he was, and together, the ten of them formed a semblance of a spiritual Partzuf, which, as just said, also consists of ten Sefirot.

But the process was not easy. Rashbi and his disciples were human, and therefore inherently selfish. Forming a ten did not make them a spiritual Partzuf. They had to overcome their egoism in order to become similar to a spiritual Partzuf, which was a long and gradual process. But as they learned to become more spiritual, loving, they put their experiences down in writing, and thus wrote The Book of Zohar.

No one had done this before them, and no one has done it since. Bit by bit, they opened up their own egoism, prevailed over it, and wrote about it in allegories and in the language of Kabbalah. At the end of their spiritual journey, they had transformed their nature entirely from hatred to love, and shared it all with us in this magnificent book. This is why The Book of Zohar is so important to humankind, especially today, when hatred is overtaking every aspect of our lives.

In the portion Aharei Mot, Rashbi’s ten gave us a glimpse into the process of feeling the hatred and transforming it to love that they had experienced. They wrote, “‘How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to also sit together.’ These are the friends as they sit together, and are not separated from each other. At first, they seem like people at war, wishing to kill one another. Then they return to being in brotherly love.”

But Rashbi’s ten did not stop there; they also shared why they made all those efforts. In their words, “And you, the friends who are here, as you were in fondness and love before, henceforth you will also not part … and by your merit there will be peace in the world, as it is written, ‘For the sake of my brothers and my friends let me say, ‘Let peace be in you.’’” Indeed, they wrote The Book of Zohar not for themselves, but for the rest of the world to find peace and love.

However, when Rashbi and his ten completed writing the book, they realized that humanity was not ready for it.

Over the centuries, humanity has revealed deeper and deeper layers of its nature, that indeed, it is all evil. When enough evil was revealed, The Book of Zohar was revealed once more. However, it was still not time for everyone to get to know it and be able to use it for its purpose: transforming hate to love.

Only now, since the end of the 20th century, our acknowledgement of our nature is sufficient for us to truly need this book of love and giving. This is why the greatest kabbalist in modern times, Rav Yehuda Ashlag, wrote the complete Sulam [ladder] commentary on The Book of Zohar, which explains every word in it, so we can all benefit from it and be able to transform ourselves the way Rashbi’s disciples did back when they wrote it.

Indeed, LAG ba Omer marks a very significant day in the history of humankind, when a rope was thrown to humanity to pull it out of the quagmire of hatred and into the pool of love that is the spiritual world.

“The Sun Is Your Father, The Moon Is Your Mother”

239Comment: The fifth commandment: “Honor your father and your mother” corresponds to the act of creation: “Let there be lights in the firmament within the waters. These are the lights of your father, the sun, ZA, and of your mother, the moon, Malchut.”

My Response: AVI (Aba ve-Ima) are the upper father and mother. They symbolize the sun and the moon, which influence the Earth, make it turn and develop, give rise to the plant, animal, and human world.

As a result, these two great lights: the Sun, the light of Hochma, and the Moon, the light of Hassadim, as our father and mother, develop us to the level where we use the light of the Moon (Hassadim) to absorb all the light of the Sun (Hochma).

Question: Should the actual father and mother be respected?

Answer: They must be respected within the earthly framework. Perhaps this commandment sounds like some kind of ethics and nothing more. We see in our world how animals very quickly separate from their parents after a few months, maybe six months to a year, and that’s it.

While man has a purely egoistic attachment between children and parents. Children exploit their parents, thus developing this interconnection. It seems to us that this is a kind, good quality. In fact, this is pure egoism on both sides.

Question: It is written in The Book of Zohar: “The Sun is your father, the Moon, your mother.” Are these our real parents?

Answer: Yes, because it is from them, our spiritual father and mother, that the upper governance descends upon us, due to which we become human beings.

We absorb all the power, all the light, all their qualities, and reach their level, that is, we rise to the level of Hochma and Bina in full interaction between them and become equal to the Creator.

As a result we, ourselves, begin to control both the moon and the sun, these two sources of life relative to our soul.

By absorbing all the qualities of Hochma and Bina, we become equal to Keter, the highest degree of the Creator.

“Let There Be A Firmament”

509Comment: The commandment “Thou shall have no other gods before Me” corresponds to the act of creation: “And God said, ‘Let there be a firmament.’”

My Response: “Let there be a firmament” means that there should be a clear division between those who take you away from the Creator and those who help you. You must determine who is helping and who is not and even turn your enemies seemingly into helpers in this movement toward Him.

As a result, the “firmament” should become the border through which you constantly reallocate everything that you have in this world to Him, everything that is in you and in others. You attribute everything to Him!

Question: And later, will the firmament be no longer needed?

Answer: Yes. It descends to the level of our Earth and everything becomes one single heaven. From the point of view of Kabbalah, this is Tzimtzum Bet (Second Restriction), the ascent of Malchut to Bina and their connection with each other.

“May My Name Be Upon You”

237Question: Why is it prohibited to pronounce the four-letter name of the Creator “Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey”?

Answer: Prohibited in Kabbalah means impossible.

It cannot be pronounced because it has no realization in the language but can only be realized inside the spiritual desire. There are many other names of the Creator: Elokim, Adni, Shadai, etc.

The name of the Creator does not mean that it is His name at all. This is what I call Him from my qualities, because in me, inside, the soul consists of four parts: Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey. When I receive light in them, it creates a combination of my desires and light. This is what I call the feeling of the Creator or His name.

I call it according to my feelings. Therefore, there is nothing special or exalted in this name to be afraid of. On the contrary, you need to attain it, get into it, so that it becomes completely yours, as it is said: “May my name be upon you.”

Malchut—Meeting Place With The Creator

936Comment: The commandment “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” corresponds to the act of creation “Let the heavenly waters flow into one place.”

My Response: Heaven is the quality of Bina, from which all the upper light descends, and these streams (32 in total) slowly descend into one common soul that we must form out of ourselves.

As a rule, we gather all our actions, thoughts, and feelings together and aim them at the Creator. But here it says that He directs all His streams of water to us, to Malchut.

Malchut is the spiritual place where all souls who want to come into contact with Him gather. This is a place of meeting with the Creator. Both we and the streams of water from the Creator rush there.

The upper waters are the upper light, the light of Hassadim (the light of mercy).

In fact, all the commandments that are repeated in two ways, referring to the act of creation, first speak of a movement from below-up, from the souls to the place of meeting with the Creator, and then from the Creator to the same place of meeting with the souls, explaining how we should come to our common place of meeting.

Grow Out Of Yourself As Adam

742.03Comment: The commandment: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” corresponds to the act of Creation: “Let the earth sprout vegetation, seed yielding herbs and fruit trees producing fruit according to its kind in which its seed is found, on the earth.”

My Response: Earth (Adamah) comes from the word “domem,” something inanimate, absolutely dead, dust. On the other hand, here we mean Adam: the earth from which Adam grows like the Creator.

When you think of the Sabbath day, which you need to come to as to the end of the whole epic of existence in this world, you start to grow. Then a spiritual sprout appears in you, which gradually increases and becomes a tree.

Man is called a tree similar to the Creator. That is, the plant represents something that changes.

The Commandment: “Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me”

239Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me: The meaning is that you will not have any other pointer in the world to direct you to the goal of your life, to the goal of creation. There will be no other quality before you except for the quality of bestowal and love, which is the symbol of the Creator whom you will worship.

What does worship mean? To see this as the highest value, the highest importance!

Comment: But life functions in such a way that I am, on the contrary, torn apart by a million desires, both mine and of others.

My Response: That is why you are commanded to make sure that all your desires and movements, in whatever direction, are tied to attaining the Creator. He must be your only goal in everything you do!

Question: What should I do for this?

Answer: First of all, you should want it to happen. And then see how you can arrange your life in such a way.

As a summary of your life, you must come to the conclusion that the Creator will be in front of you as your close partner, as a friend, as a ruler and ruled by you. You must enter into such a connection of mutual love, mutual adhesion, with Him, that there is none else besides Him. He will take over your entire world including your wife, your children, and your boss.

Comment: But we must get to this.

My Response: Of course. This is what life is given for!

Question: So what should I do?

Answer: You should realize the commandment “Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me.” In principle, it is realized in a group, through studying Kabbalah, when a person gradually begins to understand how to implement it. In general, the entire science of Kabbalah is intended for implementing this commandment.

When The Quality Of Israel Manifests

607Zohar For All, Shemot, Item 17 – 18: What is, “And He came from the ten thousand holy ones”? When the Creator wished to give the Torah to Israel, the camps of upper angels came and said, “O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is Your name in all the earth, whose majesty is rehearsed above the heavens.” They asked for the Torah to be given to them and not to Israel. The Creator told them, “Is there death in you? It is written in the Torah, ‘When a man dies in a tent,’ and ‘If a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death.’ Is there sin in you that you need Dinim [judgments]? Is there theft or robbery in you, as it is written, ‘You shall not steal’? Are there women among you, as it is written, ‘You shall not commit adultery’? Is there falsehood in you, as it is written, ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor’? Is there greed in you, as it is written, ‘You shall not covet’? Why do you wish for the Torah?”

Question: The property called Israel seems to be the highest property. At the same time, the Creator turns to the angels and says: “The Torah is not for you because you do not have such properties as: ‘do not steal’ or ‘do not commit adultery,’ but people do. So, I give the Torah to them.” If this is so, why is Israel considered the most exalted property?

Answer: The property of Israel appears in a person when the upper light comes to him and an inner contradiction awakens between who he is and who the Creator is. Any person in the world who starts to study Kabbalah soon begins to feel how far he is from being the “righteous” who used to justify himself.

It does not matter if he killed or robbed. He still justified himself or he would not have committed such acts. That is, whether it is a good or bad deed does not matter. I always justify myself by saying that everyone steals or robs. Either I had to do it because I was supposed to or because I was born that way, etc.

Once a person is unable to justify himself, that is, he has a gap between who he is and who he would like to see himself to be, the difference between the existing and the desired states, then he begins to have a goal: “I would like to be on another level, I would like to live differently.”

Then he is called Israel—directly aimed at the Creator, at being similar to Him. Now you can already talk to him. This kind of person needs the strength to change himself.

Thou Shalt Not Take The Name Of The Lord Thy God In Vain

534Zohar for All, “Yitro”: “You shall not bear the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

We are talking about the complete and absolute aim only toward the Creator. Do not associate Him in any way with any other actions. Not in any way!

On the contrary, all actions, thoughts, qualities, and intentions should be directed toward Him! No matter what they are.

“In vain” means: do not take Him apart in parts for your life. Direct everything only at Him and at His level. Then as a result of your work, you will see how much this world was created in order to elevate you to the Creator.

Comment: In fact, this phrase sounds like a superstition.

Answer: No! “You shall not take the name of the Creator in vain” means: do not pull Him for yourself over small things. On the contrary, bring all the little things in life to Him.

A person should align all his actions, thoughts, feelings, aspirations, and plans with the fact that there is one Creator, the one and only, and we must come to Him.
