Spiritual Betrayal

laitman_276_02The Torah, “Numbers” 5:11 – 5:15: The Lord spoke unto Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: Should any man’s wife go astray and deal treacherously with him, and a man lie with her carnally, but it was hidden from her husband’s eyes, but she was secluded [with the suspected adulterer] and there was no witness against her, and she was not seized. But a spirit of jealousy had come upon him and he became jealous of his wife, and she was defiled, or, a spirit of jealousy had come upon him and he was jealous of his wife, and she was not defiled. Then the man shall bring his wife to the Cohen and bring her offering for her, one-tenth part of an ephah of barley flour. He shall neither pour oil over it nor put frankincense on it, for it is a meal-offering of jealousies, a meal-offering of remembrance, recalling iniquity.

If the direction towards the Creator is clear to me and I gradually tie all my desires in this direction so that they will help me get close to Him and to rise to a level that is higher than me, then although my egoistic desires wish to draw me to the corporeal pleasures of this world, I want to shift them to attaining the upper world, the Creator. I constantly try to direct these desires towards the goal: I annul myself and ascend above myself, which means that I believe that all the conditions and the hardships stem from the Creator so that I will ascend above myself and advance in faith above reason. This is a system that I build and thus turn to Him with my desires.

But suddenly I disconnect from these efforts and discover that the desires I turned to Him with now yearn for different frivolous matters of everyday life. This is called “betrayal of the Creator.”

So what should I do?! I have to examine my desires: Why did it happen? Where did I lost contact with the thought that the Creator governs me? At what point, under what conditions, was my desire suddenly tempted to violate the connection with the Creator and to watch a movie, want to go on vacation, or be in some other event on the corporeal level.

Why has this desire (Nukva) betrayed me and why doesn’t it want to be adhered in the intention towards the Creator (Zeir Anpin)?!

How can I examine that? Only if I ascend to the level of the priest (Cohen) and examine things. I will not be able to do it any other way. I have lost the desire (Nukva) on the level I am now. Only the Upper Light can help a person examine why he didn’t hold on, what affected him, or what has intentionally brought him to a certain state. There are many nuances here, but they can all be resolved only this way.

Confessing The Sin

Laitman_524_01The Torah, “Numbers” 5:5 – 5:7: The Lord then spoke to Moses saying: Tell the children of Israel: When a man or woman commits any of the sins against man to act treacherously against God, and that person is [found] guilty, they shall confess the sin they committed, and make restitution for the principal amount of his guilt, add its fifth to it, and give it to the one against whom he was guilty.

“They shall confess the sin,” means examining the work that was done and discovering what state you find yourself in. Without such scrutiny you cannot advance properly. The recognition of evil is a precondition to overcoming it.

Question: How should I examine things if I commit a trespass against the Creator, which means that I have disconnected from the attribute of love and bestowal?

Answer: We examine our state under the influence of the collective and the study according to the right system. Then we begin to judge ourselves, which is a prayer. Praying means judging yourself. If I am connected to all those who yearn for the Creator, it is thanks to this connection that I begin to see myself through their eyes, and then I can examine myself. If I am inside myself, I basically don’t think or reflect about anything and I am on the animate level. After all, an animal feels itself the way it is, whereas, a human being feels himself with regard to others and so he feels envy, jealousy, and other attributes that are rarely found in animals.

So in order to examine myself correctly we need a group; delving into myself will only lead to depression and to nothing but self-torture. All this is useless. Self-examination is a state in which you draw the Upper Light, which comes through the group unto yourself and you begin to examine yourself with regard to it. Such a focused examination shows you to what extent you are properly integrated into the group, which means with the Creator! It is because the group is actually the general attribute of connection to which you measure yourself. But if you do it by yourself, you will begin to compare yourself to ordinary people and this isn’t the state you should compare yourself to. It has to be fulfilled through the group and through the Upper Light that comes through it.

Curing The Harmful Desires

Laitman_631_1The Torah, “Numbers” 5:1 – 5:2: And the Lord spoke to Moses saying: Command the children of Israel, to banish from the camp all those afflicted with tzara’ath or with a male discharge, and all those unclean through [contact with] the dead.

The attributes called leper and unclean by the dead exist in every person. It refers to the ego that is not corrected yet. In order to correct it we need to accurately separate the useless parts, the lowly and egotistically infected parts, from the desires that have already been cured with the intention of in order to love and bestowal, for the sake of the right and good connection. This kind of work is done on every level. The moment a certain step forward is fulfilled in the preparation for the ascent to the level of the land of Israel, the level of complete bestowal and of a total connection of mutual love between everyone, different actions should immediately be performed in order to clarify and gather what is missing.

If I am assigned to classify, clean, and choose certain items, for example, I do it without glasses the first time, then with weak glasses, and then with even stronger lenses and with the right light, etc. This means that each time the resolution is higher. It is as if we examine these attributes but under an increasingly stronger magnifying glass. When we classify we clarify whether these attributes are actually harmful and to what extent. What is more, we can correct them only when we separate them from other attributes, outside the camp. But on the whole, the whole generation that advances from Mt. Sinai to the land of Israel dies, and a new generation enters this land, which means that the ego disappears completely and the nation enters the land of Israel as if it is reborn.

Question: Where do the uncorrected attributes go?

Answer: Beyond the boundaries of the desires that participate in the ascent to the level of the land of Israel. They have to die, which means that they have to be totally changed and fully corrected. Death in spirituality means purification. We have to think about how to distinguish the impure desire and attributes inside me and not use them. Taking them out of the camp is a way of putting them to death. They don’t need to receive any Light.

The problem is that when egoistic desires are among the right desires and intentions they receive the Light from them and cling to them. Why do we remove a tumor, for example? It is because it sucks the powers from the body and is nourished by the healthy organs, living at their expense. But if it is removed, it dies because of lack of nourishment. Therefore, when the egoistic intention dies the desires are rehabilitated and cured; they undergo correction and join the healthy body. At the same time, nothing disappears. The desires remain and only the intention changes: altruistic intentions appear instead of the egoistic intentions.

Question: Is this how a leper becomes pure?

Answer: A leper is a desire that is used incorrectly, for one’s own sake. But if you cut the intention for the sake of one’s self off it, and change it with the help of the Upper Light into the intention for the sake of the Creator, this desire is cured.

Code Of Spiritual Information

laitman_214The Torah, “Numbers” 3:40 – 3:42”: The Lord said to Moses: Count every firstborn male aged one month and upward of the children of Israel, and take the number of their names.

And you shall take the Levites for Me I am the Lord instead of all first-borns among the children of Israel. And [take] the Levites’ animals instead of all the firstborn animals of the children of Israel.

So Moses counted every firstborn of Israel, as the Lord had commanded him.

Question: What do these calculations mean?

Answer: When we assemble some device that usually consists of two opposite properties and create various combinations out of these two opposite properties, we have to clearly define the qualities of every junction between them.

There is the Light and the darkness, the desire to bestow and love, and the will to receive and hate. We have to create various combinations of them. This is what everything consists of.

Numbers are a very straightforward expression of a spiritual level; states and properties that cannot be explained any other way. How can we express spiritual properties? This can only be done numerically.

Numbers express the degree of the property of bestowal (the screen) compared to the intensity of the will to receive. This includes the height and the three lines. This  number, like any other code, carries certain information; in this case, the numbers define the coordinates of the camp: what line each one comes from, what tribe one belongs to, i.e., definitions of height and width.

Also, the code bears the information about the number of the components (private souls), their qualities and junctions among them. However, none of these parts possess personal properties since each property can be revealed only through interaction with others because it serves the property of bestowal.

This makes it impossible to talk about some person. In this world, we verbally describe somebody; however, in spirituality all that can be said about one is one’s ability to give, one’s benevolence that is oriented towards bestowal. This is the only parameter in accordance to which the strength of one’s qualities can be measured.

As a result, we end up with a numeric code, and a person in spiritual attainment understands what it means.

In general, the entire Torah is written through various sensory and numeric codes as well as the codes that denote various forces. How else can we describe things that cannot be explained by the words of this world? That’s why the language of Kabbalah is the language of forces and multiple vectors. Of course, not all understand it; not everyone can see the genuine picture of the world behind these schemes since we transmit them as images rather than vectors.

For example, if a computer doesn’t work properly, instead of a meadow, wood, or sky we see some characters on the screen. How can you see the picture if you don’t know the meaning of the characters? But if you attune yourself correctly to their perception, you won’t have to see the picture at all. Instead, you’ll sense the meadow, the wood, or the sky. It is the same with the numbers.

This is how new properties and sensations are created. We have to orient ourselves to the perception of spiritual vectors: bestowal – receiving, love – hatred. But this level is unavailable to us, yet.

Love And Loyalty

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Numbers”, 5; 5-7: The Lord then spoke to Moses saying: Tell the children of Israel: When a man or woman commits any of the sins against man to act treacherously against God, and that person is [found] guilty, they shall confess the sin they committed, and make restitution for the principal amount of his guilt, add its fifth to it, and give it to the one against whom he was guilty.

Question: What is the meaning of “to commit a trespass against the Lord?”

Answer: To commit a trespass against the Lord means to love one’s self more than the Creator. The Creator has no form. It is the attribute of love that has to stem from each of us and fill the void between us. If I love someone, all my thoughts and intentions are aimed at his or her wellbeing and this is called love of others. But if instead of that love I suddenly become immersed in egoistic love, it means that instead of cultivating the general mutual love between us, I begin to think about myself.

Love of the Creator is love of the attribute of love and bestowal. But if I turn my back on this attribute, it means that I definitely l only love myself. This is called a trespass. There is no middle way in nature: It is either plus or minus; either in that direction or backward. There is no other way! Therefore, if you are not connected to this attribute, it means that you are clearly absolutely connected to yourself. This is simple human love on the corporeal level.

In fact, I love the feeling that a certain person or a certain food or music invokes in me, this feeling fills me. We, on the other hand, refer to love as an attribute, of a spiritual state! An ordinary person cannot understand that although the same thing actually happens in our world, we don’t feel it. We don’t understand it and don’t discover these possibilities inside us.

The Weekly Torah Portion Naso: Counting The Attributes

laitman_557The Torah, “Numbers,” 4:21 – 4:22, 4:49: The Lord spoke to Moses saying: Take a census of the sons of Gershon, of them too, following their fathers’ houses, according to their families…As directed by the Lord, they were appointed by Moses, each man to his service and his burden; they were counted as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Question: The weekly section “Naso” begins with usual phrase: “the Lord spoke to Moses saying.” What does that mean?

Answer: When the Creator speaks to Moses He turns to the point in a person that connects him with the upper force. We always speak with the Creator through this point but we don’t hear Him. Therefore, our mission is to hear the Creator.

It says: “‘Take a consensus of the sons of Gershon, of them too, following their fathers’ houses, according to their families,” which refers to a calculation, meaning to the counting and checking of different attributes since they are all in each of us. I have to scan and organize them and to determine which I control more and which less, how they accumulate inside me into one figure, and what I should do with them. Thus, I prepare the attributes I have counted inside me for action.

The Method For Spiritual Ascent

Laitman_041_01The Torah is a method for purification from the ego and the gradual attainment of “entry into the Land of Israel,” meaning, the attainment of desires similar to the characteristics of the Creator filled with goodness and love directed from each one to all the rest.

All of this was realized in the forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Nobody attained the height all at once. When a person comes to study the wisdom of Kabbalah, he or she is preparing him or herself for entry into a spiritual level; he passes through a multitude of different states: ascents, descents, and forward movements that seem like a regression to him. There is perpetual movement from one state to another state. Actually, the same tendency can be seen here: All of the states are absolutely different; all of them are given to us by the upper force, the Creator, and we need to direct them to the singular point of convergence towards Him for everyone. The main thing is connection with the Creator in spite of all the states we are found in.

Reaching The Land Of Israel
Two Levels Of The Torah

The First Born Among The Children Of Israel

laitman_232_04The Torah, “Numbers,” 3:11 – 3:13: The Lord spoke to Moses, saying. As for Me I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in place of all first-borns among the children of Israel who have opened the womb, and the Levites shall be Mine. For all the firstborns are Mine; since the day I smote all the firstborns in the land of Egypt, I sanctified for Myself all the firstborns of Israel, both man and beast they shall become Mine, I am the Lord.

Every new level begins from the Sefira of Keter, which contains everything. When it spreads it builds the other Sefirot. The Sefira of Keter is born from the previous state, which is the firstborn.

Question: Why are the firstborn of Israel compared to the firstborn who died in Egypt?

Answer: Because the firstborn who died in Egypt are egotistic desires that mustn’t be kept alive and so they had to die. It is thanks to this that a new type of firstborn appears. This means that the desires that were focused only on receiving for themselves die in their yearning and become the next level of the firstborn of Israel, the Sefira of Keter.

The Tower Of Babel: The Desire To Find The Meaning Of Life

Laitman_115_04Twelve tribes positioned in a specific order around the Tabernacle of Revelation, each under its banner, represent the properties of a single Kli (vessel) near which all the members of the camp led by Moses gathered.

Question: Was this form first acquired by Abraham’s group once they left Babylon?

Answer: Abraham is the starting point from which the method of correction of egoism associated with the human degree in ancient Babylon was launched.

Adam was the first one who ever revealed egoism; Noah was next. Their non-egoistic cognition emerged as the first and second levels. The third and fourth levels belong to a selfish part of the soul, to the thickness of egoism.

The Creator corrected Adam by granting him a garment (clothing); as to Noah, he hid all earthly egoistic properties in the “cocoon” of the Ark, whereas in Babylon a Tower was built that reached the skies. It symbolized a genuine human selfishness, a lack of mutual understanding between people.

They really had something to rise above and to correct. At this point, Abraham revealed the methodology of correction of egoism and began implementing it.

Question: Can we say that Abraham called everybody to unite so that they would regain a sense of a common family?

Answer: No. There was no place to return to because Abraham’s followers were extremely diverse. They came from different Babylonian tribes that were completely estranged throughout the lifespan of several generations and reached the degree of a complete internal detachment.

They totally rejected the idea of unity! The only thing they managed to achieve was erecting the seven-layered Tower of Babel. This meant that their egoism was ready to move forward at all seven levels, to reach the Heavens and find out where the Creator was hidden.

The Tower reflected the Babylonians’ most serious internal aspiration in their search of the purpose in life. After all, at some point they lived, one might say, in a communist society, as one people, as fellow-mates.

Previously, there was no tension among them. Before their egoism exploded, everything was just fine, quiet, and calm. All of a sudden they began to seek superiority over teach other; then everything collapsed because they strived to attain the Creator selfishly.

Babylonians tried to embody all their knowledge of the higher power in the construction of the Tower. It was their understanding of how to reach the Creator. The Tower was a sacrificial place where all sorts of magicians and fortune-tellers could be found. Various kinds of manipulations that are still very popular and widespread even today were conducted there: spells, divination cards, amulets, red strings; everything was in vogue.

However, they lacked the most important thing—the desire to reveal the Creator. This is was their undoing.

We Shall Do And We Shall Hear!

laitman_943Question: At the time when the people of Israel received the Torah, they exclaimed: “We shall do and we shall hear!” Does this phrase have any spiritual meaning?

Answer: As a matter of fact, this phrase has nothing but a spiritual meaning. The entire Torah speaks only about spirituality, not about physical actions of this world as many people think.

“We shall do” means that we will unite, and “we shall hear” means attaining a benevolent force that manifests itself in our effort to connect, to be kind to each other. This force completes our action, as it is written: “The Creator completes me.”

Question: What shall we “hear” after we connect?

Answer: “We shall hear” signifies the level of Bina, i.e., hearing (not material, but internal). It’s a condition when we recognize the force of bestowal that actually appears among us and connects us.

The bestowing force unveils itself and fills the space among us. This force is called the Creator; at this point, we reveal its properties. This is called the revelation of the Creator to the creations in this world.
