Revelation In Concealment

laitman_260_01The Torah, “Numbers” 9:15 – 9:18: On the day the Mishkan [Tabernacle] was erected, the cloud covered the Mishkan, which was a tent for the Testimony, and at evening, there was over the Mishkan like an appearance of fire, [which remained] until morning.

So it was always, the cloud covered it and there was an appearance of fire at night; and according to the cloud’s departure from over the Tent, and afterwards, the children of Israel would travel, and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would encamp. At the bidding of the Lord, the children of Israel traveled, and at the bidding of the Lord, they encamped. As long as the cloud hovered above the Mishkan, they encamped.

The cloud is the attribute of concealment. I must constantly make sure that I am in concealment in order to advance toward the goal, toward the attribute of bestowal so that my ego will not see anything and that I will have the power to work on it all the time.

This is called faith above reason. So I constantly follow the concealment that shows me which way to go. At the same time, I don’t run away from the cloud in order to get closer to the Light, but actually hide from the Light in the cloud.

There are many articles about this and especially Rabash’s articles, most of which are dedicated to the issue about to how to ascend from Lo Lishma (Not For Her Name) to Lishma (For Her Name).

A person who wants to reach the end of correction has no other choice but to constantly to look for the cloud because one can raise himself only when the Creator is concealed.

This seems to contradict common sense. I conceal my ego and work above it for the sake of the attribute of bestowal despite my feelings, my knowledge, and my understanding, despite the fact that the Creator can be revealed to me as great and awesome. I want to conceal Him!

I look for the cloud in which I don’t see anything and don’t hear anything from the upper. In that case, I can advance with all the others (with my group, for example), and only in the direction we must choose and don’t distinguish the attribute of love and bestowal, which is not complete yet. When we try to rebuild it, we ask the upper to do it for us, but without the revelation of the Creator!

On the other hand, the wisdom of Kabbalah is about the revelation of the Creator to man. To the extent that we can be in the cloud that covers us, we begin to feel that this action takes place inside a great Light, during daytime. It is through the cloud that we begin to feel the upper Light, but only when we put ourselves in it.

Then, when we reach the end of correction, the cloud suddenly evaporates somehow, and we begin to perceive the revelation of the Light in the attribute of love and bestowal, which means outside of ourselves.

Question: In daily life a person says, “I look for a clear sky,” but you say, “I look for the cloud.” These two approaches are totally different.

Answer: This is the reason that the spiritual revelation is called The Megila (Book) Of Esther (stemming from the words “revelation” and “concealment” in Hebrew). A Megila refers to revelation and Esther refers to the concealment. This is where the double attribute, the revelation in the concealment, are revealed.

This happens all of the time in the spiritual work, and this is the reason people find it so hard to perceive the wisdom of Kabbalah because according to their logic, they think that everything is very simple. In fact, a person must work, and for a long time, in order to understand the logic of the upper world, which constantly eludes them.

When he is invited to the revelation, he must actually close his eyes. Therefore, it says that, when the Creator was revealed, Moses didn’t look at Him, and, thanks to that, he was rewarded with the complete revelation of the Creator.

Exodus From Egypt In Each Generation

laitman_749_01The Torah, “Numbers” 9:09 – 9:11: The Lord spoke to Moses saying: “Speak to the children of Israel saying, Any person who becomes unclean from [contact with] the dead, or who is on a distant journey, whether among you or in future generations, he shall make a Passover sacrifice for the Lord. In the second month, on the fourteenth day, in the afternoon, they shall make it; they shall it with unleavened cakes and bitter herbs.”

On the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight on the anniversary of the Exodus from Egypt, it is necessary to bring the so-called Passover sacrifice, i.e., to identify the next layer of selfishness that has to be corrected as if we are exiting from Egypt at this very moment.

It is said that in every generation, in every action, one must imagine that one exits Egypt because there are desires that that were not revealed in Egypt, because exiting from Egypt was done in a hurry, under the cover of darkness.

A person in this state does not understand if he is capable of analyzing and differentiating between which of his qualities are associated with bestowal and which are not and how they can be corrected.

Now, after a full year of deliverance from Egyptian slavery, after going through the entire circle of correction, one returns to the same starting point and may once again take Malchut, an egoistic will to receive, and exit Egypt again.

This cycle repeats every year. One purifies oneself by rising from Malchut to Bina forty times.

By going through forty steps of purification, at each one of them one discovers another Passover sacrifice that still has to be corrected, i.e., “pulled” out of Egypt. Previously, it was hidden inside a person; it was not seen, it was not felt,  as none of us understand what we consist of.

In this world advancing by suffering, only due to distresses  do we begin realizing who we are. The Torah explains how to analyze our afflictions in a good way, with the help of the Light.

What Does The Torah Speak About?

laitman_527_05Question: Did the events described in the Torah really take place in this world? In one of your programs you said that we have to go through the whole story of the Torah inside ourselves.

Answer: Of course, all the words in the Torah took place in this world because every upper spiritual root has to develop and eventually touch its material branch.

This is why we went through the entire process in this world: Adam HaRishon and all further generations up to Abraham, and further on through our forefathers Isaac and Jacob, Jacob’s sons, then lowering to Egypt, Moshe, Aaron, the standing at the Mount Sinai, the entrance to the land of Israel, conquering the land of Israel, the destruction of the First and the Second Temples, etc.

Anything we have been through in this world is only one side of the picture. The most important thing is our current state and what events described in the Torah we still have to go through.

The Torah is not about historic events; rather, it is about what we are supposed to correct after Adam HaRishon’s sin. As a result of our correction, we will attain the spiritual world that is eternal and endless; it is here and now, as soon as we agree to go through the process of correction, as is written: “You shall see your world during your lifetime.”

The Level Of Those Who Repent

Laitman_509The Torah, “Numbers” 9:14: If a proselyte dwells with you, and he makes a Passover sacrifice to the Lord, according to the statutes of the Passover sacrifice and its ordinances he shall make it. One statute shall apply to you, to the proselyte and to the native-born citizen.

A proselyte refers to the desire that can be added to the desires that already have been corrected. When you choose a desire from the egoistic desires called the nations of the world that can be added to the attribute of bestowal called Israel (from the words, Yashar El, straight to God), it no longer is considered a proselyte.

It is the same law for everyone. Therefore, it says that even complete righteous cannot stand in the place where those who repent stand.

It is because a person who repents and returns to the Creator brings with him the greatest ego as he corrects the increasingly more internal egoistic parts, which leads to an ascent that the righteous, the pioneers, cannot bring about. This is how the spiritual system works.

This means that the nations of the world that join Israel don’t simply ascend to that level but actually ascend higher than that since they bring such egoistic attributes with them that do not exist in Israel.

Therefore, it is said, “There is wisdom among the nations, believe it…,” which means that, during the correction of the strongest egoistic desires, they ascend higher than all the others.

Getting Closer To The Creator

laitman_207The Torah, “Numbers” 9:13: But the man who was ritually clean and was not on a journey, yet refrained from making the Passover sacrifice, his soul shall be cut off from his people, for he did not bring the offering of the Lord in its appointed time; that person shall bear his sin.

If a person feels that he is pure and that there is no egoism in him that can be corrected, it means that he hasn’t worked on himself the whole year and has nothing to offer as sacrifice. The word “sacrifice” in Hebrew stems from the word “to get closer” and to rise to a higher level.

This is why this weekly section of the Torah is called BeHaalotcha (as you rise). Thus a person who hasn’t revealed and exposed anything in him and has nothing to correct because he considers himself perfect cannot ascend the spiritual levels. Such a person has nothing to advance with. However a person who systematically cleans his “stables” and sees what he can correct and what he can’t and brings to the Menorah what he can correct so that it can be corrected gets closer to the Creator.

Comment: A person is considered holy in our world if people believe that he is pure and has nothing to correct.

Answer: No! A holy man is someone who constantly finds the “carrion” inside him and continuously reveals and exposes increasingly greater reasons inside him for correction and fulfills that. He is constantly dynamic and there is no end to it.

The Twilight Of Pesach

Laitman_119The Torah, ‘Numbers” 9:12: They shall not leave over anything from it until the next morning, and they shall not break any of its bones. They shall make it in accordance with all the statutes connected with the Passover sacrifice.

Question: It is written, “They shall not leave over anything from it until the next morning…” Why does the exodus from Egypt take place during twilight?

Answer: Twilight is a state in which you cannot scrutinize or discern anything. You cannot even identify a familiar person who is four steps away from you. This is the reason that the word “evening”—Erev in Hebrew—stems from the word, “to mix.”

The state of twilight symbolizes a person’s strong doubts.

Question: Why is it forbidden to break the bones of the Pesach sacrifice?

Answer: The bones symbolize Yesod, the basis on which all the other attributes are dressed. Our attributes must remain the way they initially were given to us, and we must not corrupt them in any way. We only need to choose which of them can be corrected and not touch the others.

This is referred to by “they shall not break any of its bones,” which means taking the basis and advancing with it.

At The People’s Service

Laitman_043The Torah, “Numbers” 8:9 – 8:14: You shall bring the Levites in front of the Tent of Meeting, and you shall gather the entire congregation of the children of Israel. You shall bring the Levites before the Lord, and the children of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites.

Then Aaron shall lift up the Levites as a waving before the Lord on behalf of the children of Israel, that they may serve in the Lord’s service. The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and make one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering to the Lord, to atone for the Levites. You shall present the Levites before Aaron and his sons, and lift them as a waving before the Lord. Thus shall you set apart the Levites from the midst of the children of Israel, and the Levites shall become Mine.

If we accept what the Torah says literally, we can see a whole opera here with the Levites standing on the stairs, singing Shir Hama’alot, lighting the Menorah, which illuminates by itself, and so forth.

However, in fact, everything takes place inside a person who must compare and scrutinize everything in order to bring his attributes together into the right schema. When we gather the different attributes inside us, we must put the jigsaw puzzle together in the right order, and when it is ready, it will become the basis of the soul and will begin to illuminate.

When all of the attributes of the soul are collected in the right relationships to each other, when they complement one another and yearn to bestow unto the Creator, the schema we have put together and that we have created begins to radiate Light.

All the energy, all of the upper Light is in this schema from the start, and if we connect all our attributes correctly, it is revealed in it. At the same time, the ego and the inner resistance still remain in us while, above them and actually thanks to them, the revelation of the attribute of love and bestowal, the attribute of unity, begins. This means that the ego, the restriction, the Masach (Screen) and the Light appear simultaneously.

It is written, “You shall bring the Levites in front of the Tent of Meeting…” This refers to a person’s attributes called “Levites” that must ascend to the level of the revelation of the Creator, but they cannot ascend on their own because the Levites only have the attributes of bestowal (GE).

They don’t have any ego or a desire to receive. This is the reason that their work comes down to serving the people, working as the nation’s educators and teachers. On the one hand, they must collect the tithe and bring it to Jerusalem, and then spread out again in order to teach the people. But because they cannot do it on their own, Moses does that by bringing them to the tent of meeting.

The Contact Point With The Creator

laitman_740_02The Torah, “Numbers” 9:6 – 9:8: But there were certain men, who were unclean by the dead body of a man, so that they could not keep the passover on that day; and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day.

And those men said unto him: “We are unclean by the dead body of a man; wherefore are we to be kept back, so as not to bring the offering of the Lord in its appointed season among the children of Israel?” And Moses said unto them: “Stay ye that I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.”

Who were unclean by the dead body of a man, means connecting in their internal work to their dead desires that are aimed at self-contentment and not to the intention of in order to bestow unto others.

A person who suddenly sinks into these desires cannot be purified of them and corrected. In that case not only does he not enter the land of Israel, but he cannot advance in his spiritual ascent either.

And Moses said unto them: “stay ye that I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.” Moses doesn’t decide anything on his own because it is merely a point in us that yearns for the Creator. When it receives a desire from below, it has to find the contact with the Creator. This is what Moses’ function and actions come down to.

He is loyal both to the people and to the Creator because he is the point of contact between them, which means between all the uncorrected attributes and the upper property of love and bestowal.

He has no self, and is therefore called the Lord’s slave, as it says: “There has not been a prophet as great as Moses.” In other words, it is absolute bestowal in both directions.

Pesach In Every Generation

laitman_747_03The Torah, “Numbers” 9:1 – 9:2, 9:5: And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying: “Let the children of Israel keep the passover in its appointed season.” And they kept the passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at dusk, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.

A year went by after the exodus from Egypt. When the children of Israel became free they couldn’t celebrate that event. Now, a year later, they begin to celebrate the anniversary of the exodus (Pesach). Therefore, the Torah gives us specific instructions as to how we should do it. The first celebration of Pesach (Passover) takes place in the Sinai desert, and is celebrated every year for forty years, which means that it repeats in each of the forty levels of ascent. When we ascend the spiritual levels we undergo the phases of the correction of egoism into the attributes of love and bestowal over and over again. Everything repeats itself.

The Torah allegorically tells us that by bringing Passover sacrifices we examine how we can distinguish more and more attributes inside us that we should have apparently left in Egypt, with which attributes we come out of slavery, and which attributes can be purified, etc. What do the 40 years of wandering in the desert mean? It is a repetition of the previous corrections on new levels that created the 40 levels of ascent to the level of the land of Israel, until the generation of the desert disappears, which means until the purification of egoism is completed.

Therefore, the Creator says that no one who belongs to the generation of the desert can enter the land of Israel, but only those who have fully corrected themselves into altruism. All the others who don’t join the attribute of love and bestowal must die. It is actually dead anyway but has not been differentiated from the “salad” of attributes and desires. When we classify and take out what can be corrected into bestowal, we create an altruistic desire that is called the land of Israel, and anything that cannot participate in it is the same Egypt that died because it lacked all the Light.

Egypt used to receive the Light, thanks to the connection to the attributes that can be corrected, as the minimal illumination descended through them. But now the desires that cannot be corrected have become detached and they are already completely dead. Therefore, when we go through the 40 levels of correction we constantly form the land of Israel, which is gradually revealed before us.

“And The Levites Shall Become Mine”

laitman_933The Torah, “Numbers” 8:11 – 8:12, 8:14: Then Aaron shall lift up the Levites as a waving before the Lord on behalf of the children of Israel, that they may serve in the Lord’s service. The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls… and the Levites shall become Mine.

The Levites initiate the process of the “purification of the people” through themselves, even though it is not their personal quality. They prepare themselves for receiving the Light, thus elevating the entire people to the level of spiritual correction. This process is called the “formation (enlightenment, education) of the people.”

This is the way Levites engage in overall enlightenment. Those who get close to them begin perceiving the Upper Light and undergo transformations under the influence of the Upper Light.

The transformation they go through is a sacrifice described as: “And the Levites shall lay their hands on the bulls’ heads.”

The phrase “… and the Levites shall become Mine” denotes unification with the Higher Power.
