Spiritual States

laitman_628_1Torah, Deuteronomy 11:19: And you shall teach them to your sons to speak with them, when you sit in your house and when you walk on the way and when you lie down and when you rise, in other words in all the cases: either in the small or great spiritual state.

The small state is a horizontal one, associated with a person lying down; the big state is a high one, when he gets up. To “walk on the way” means to rise in spiritual ascent. In any state, we must remember about these conditions and implement them.

Sons are  a person’s future spiritual degrees. “Teach them to your sons” means to record on the future states what you’ve done now, to educate yourselves and move forward.

The Early Rain And The Latter Rain

Laitman_728_01Torah, Deuteronomy 11:13 – 11:15: And it will be, if you hearken to My commandments that I command you this day to love the Lord, your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, I will give the rain of your land at its time, the early rain and the latter rain, and you will gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in your field for your livestock, and you will eat and be sated.

There are day and night and everything starts with the night, when new opportunities and new uncorrected, tough desires appear, when the sun, the light of life disappears, and a person as if dies, goes to sleep, in other words he disconnects from reality. This allegorical picture shows us the same things that happen in nature with the seasons and with us during life: birth, robust years of development, and then gradual descent. The same also happens with our spiritual degrees.

Therefore, we rise to them, realize ourselves in them, and descend in order to rise to the next degree. We don’t see the continuation in our lives, except the change of the four seasons, but we see these stages in spiritual life.

Everything comes from the five stages of the emanation of the Upper Light. The first stage is the crown or root stage, and it is followed by the other four stages. In material life, there is a change of seasons four times a year according to the upper roots, an upper standard. The same thing happens with spiritual life; there are four stages of implementing each spiritual degree.

“The early rain and the latter rain” (in Hebrew, yore ve malchosh) are the beginning and the end. Yore is the first rain, malchosh is the last rain, and all the rains in between come on time. Then the hot summer comes and everything dries up. This is the way it has to be in nature. After all, this period is necessary in order for renewal.

However, if a person exists correctly in these stages, he doesn’t feel any special dependence on either winter, spring, autumn, or summer. He is absolutely comfortable in all the stages and he always has enough of everything. He understands that this cycle is necessary in order to move forward through rotation and progressive movements. Like the planets revolve around the sun, so we must revolve, realizing our Reshimot, and rising this way.

Therefore the first rain, the last rain, and the connection between them through the winter or summer are required exactly in order to bring either the Light of Hassadim to our earth (our desires) and correct them, or to bring the Light of Hochma.

It Is Hard To Be Righteous

laitman_741_02Torah, Deuteronomy 11:17: And the wrath of the Lord will be kindled against you, and He will close off the heavens, and there will be no rain, and the ground will not give its produce, and you will perish quickly from upon the good land that the Lord gives you.

If a person is not engaged in spiritual correction, he is left without the Light of Hassadim, without moisture and rain, and he can’t use his egoism correctly.

The sun burns so much that it becomes not a light of life but a withering heat for him. With such an attitude to life, to the world, and to his mission, a person withers without water (the Light of Hassadim). This is exactly what is happening today.

Question: Is such a state of impasse felt on each new degree?

Answer: This impasse must continue for no more than a moment. However, it has to be recognized by a person in order to move forward, as it is written, “There is no righteous man on earth who has done good and did not sin first.” So on each degree he stumbles and then moves forward, stumbles and moves forward. He passes the lowest point of bifurcation, recognition of egoism, and only then he begins to rise.

Moreover, at the lowest point, he completely denies the Creator, doesn’t agree with anything, dives into extreme egoism, and becomes the worst offender of all the laws, meaning he is absolutely opposite to the upper state of the righteous.

Question: Does this apply only to these who advance and not others who don’t reach this point?

Answer: Of course. Normal people don’t experience any internal states. They don’t even know what states the righteous are in.

Land Of Mountains And Valleys

laitman_747_03Torah, Deuteronomy 11:11: But the land, to which you pass to possess, is a land of mountains and valleys and absorbs water from the rains of heaven, …

The land of Israel is described very poetically, but the Torah is not referring to physical images.

Water, symbolizing the life-giving force, is the Light of Hassadim. This is exactly what is missing in order to revive everything, because the Light of Hochma—the Light of knowledge and power—is a very strong, tough, hard light. Clothed in the Light of Hassadim—the light of mercy and mutual connection—it connects the right and left lines.

They complement each other so easily and simply and interact with each other in such a way that we begin to feel ourselves as existing in another dimension in which almost all of the physical sensations of our world—distance, weight, and height—disappear.

An entirely different measure appears, a measure of the correct interaction is when you dissolve in two opposite forces, move between them along the middle line, and all of itself is revealed before you.

Question: Why is it written that this is a land of mountains and valleys?

Answer: The mountains symbolize the height of the Light of Hochma, and valleys are the expansion of the Light of Hassadim. These two parameters must be balanced with each other.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Your Desires

Laitman_514_04Torah, Deuteronomy 11:25: No man will stand up before you; the Lord your God will cast the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land upon which you tread, as He spoke to you.

A person shouldn’t be afraid of any desire that rises within him and seems to him unattainable and terrifying. All the fears and everything that the uncorrected egoism paints for him are worth nothing. They are required only to ensure that he attracts even greater appearance of the upper Light, which balances the uncorrected desires and rises even higher.

Such immense desires that are very hard to correct appear in a person on purpose. He ascends to the world of Infinity by correcting them.

Question: Does it mean that if he ascends, all the nations make way for him?

Answer: Yes, it happens exactly when he understands correctly how to attract the upper Light.

Secret Of The Middle Line

Laitman_041_01Torah, Deuteronomy 11:12: … a land the Lord, your God, looks after; the eyes of Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

If a person aspires to the middle line, he has no shortage of the right line or the left line. He always can balance them with each other and join them into the middle line.

“From the beginning of the year to the end of the year” means that a person closes all borders at the beginning and the end. He never has unfinished affairs, and the end of his work is always visible.

In other words, the right line comes to the aid of the left line and balances it into the middle line, and the middle line measures itself correctly in order not to be at full height, but only at two-thirds, called VAK. It is only in this way that a person can advance correctly.

All of the measurements will be before us, and we are never wrong in our calculations. This is the secret of the middle line that we need to master.

Spiritual Signs

Laitman_509Torah, Deuteronomy 11:18: …and bind them for a sign upon your hand…

The left hand is receiving and right hand giving. The hand that Tefillin is worn on is the weak left hand in order to tame egoism. It symbolizes the correction that a person should have on his upper spiritual degree.

This is a very high level in the world of Atzilut – Arich Anpin. There are Tefillin Jacob, Tefillin Rachel, Tefillin Leah, and Tefillin Israel.

Torah, Deuteronomy 11:18: …and they shall be for ornaments between your eyes…

Eyes are the quality of the level of Hochma in the head part of the world of Atzilut, meaning they are very high corrections. To reach such states we must do serious work on ourselves.

But there are also support programs that help implement a common program. It is like recording a new program on our desires. After all, nothing was created in the universe apart from desire. And the Upper Light gradually, like a laser, records the new program on our previous program without canceling the previous one.

In other words, all our egoism remains and just begins to work according to the different program. Therefore Tefillin, Tallit, and all other attributes symbolize the spiritual connections that we must restore between us over our shattered desire.

Question: Do these material attributes help us?

Answer: Unfortunately they just distract us. The fact is that by realizing commandments on the material level, a person thinks that he does everything required. However, it is good if along with performing physical actions that explanations are given: why, what for, and what is behind them, so they remind a person about his inner abilities of implementing the correction.

And it is bad if he thinks that by tying the Tefillin boxes he already fulfills the commandments.

Write My Program On Your Heart

laitman_527_02Torah, Deuteronomy 11:18: And you shall set these words of Mine upon your heart and upon your soul…

A person must recognize all the changes that happen to him and move exactly according to them, perceiving each of them as coming from the Creator, as a necessity for his advancement.

With these states that are, as if, the “words” of the Creator, he must format his heart and his mind, in other words, transform them into a completely different format.

Just as it is required to delete a previous program in a computer in order to install a new one, in the same way we, while moving forward, must gradually delete each degree within us and record a new one to replace it. We need to gradually rewrite the entire egoistic attitude to the world, to life, and to each other in an altruistic way. And we need to do this independently.

Therefore it is written, “set these words of Mine upon your heart and upon your soul,” meaning write down My program, the program of bestowal and love, upon your egoistic heart.

But the heart doesn’t really want to accept it, so this program can’t immediately go to the heart! It really isn’t easy.

What Came First, The Torah Or The Wisdom Of Kabbalah?

laitman_527_04Question: What came first, the Torah or the wisdom of Kabbalah? Why do we study the wisdom of Kabbalah without studying the Torah, Moses’ Torah?

Answer: History tells us that gases were created after the Big Bang and the particles of matter that began to spread came together, and this is how our planet was created. Then the oceans were formed, then came the vegetative and the animate world, and finally man.

Man began to develop significantly about 3,500 years ago. The bulk of the developed people were in ancient Babylon, which became the basis of modern civilization.

From 20 generations to ancient Babylon, 5,777 years ago, a man called Adam appeared. He discovered the leadership system of our world, which he described in the book The Angel Raziel (The Secret Force). According to Rambam, the great Kabbalist of the 12th century, Adam and his students wrote books, but none of them have reached us except for the book The Angel Raziel. Twenty generations after the first generation of Kabbalists, Abraham appeared.

Abraham was a priest in ancient Babylon, and according to Midrash Rabba, he used to go out at nights, look at the stars, and wonder where the force that moves the whole universe comes from. Why do people live, for what purpose, how, who manages them, who is spinning this whole mechanism of the galaxy?

Gradually he began to explore the system of creation in great depth. Of course, there were many other people who looked at the stars, but only he was lucky enough to discover it since this is a special attribute of the soul.

Abraham discovered the system of creation and described it in his book The Book of Yetzira (creation). It is a small book of several dozen pages, which summarize the main points of the system of creation and how the world is managed. This book, just like Adam’s book, can be bought in bookstores today. The other writings of Abraham have not reached our days.

Everything Adam and Abraham wrote is the pure wisdom of Kabbalah. After Abraham, his students Isaac and Jacob, called the children of Abraham, continued his study, which actually represented a development of the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Only after the exodus from Egypt when the need for a more sophisticated method of uniting the nation and attaining the Creator arose was it revealed to Moses in the same way that we study it today. This method is called the Torah.

Adam wrote his book almost 6,000 years ago; Abraham wrote about 3,500 years ago, and the Torah was written about 3,300 years ago.

Question: Does this mean that the Torah is secondary to the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: The Torah is also the wisdom of Kabbalah.

We study the basics of the wisdom of Kabbalah in order to study the Torah, The Five Books of Moses, since it continues the wisdom of Kabbalah on the next level.

To a person who doesn’t study the wisdom of Kabbalah, the Torah seems like a collection of stories about the ancient Jews who wandered in the desert and about what happened to them. In order to understand what this book really says and what is encoded in it, we must know the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Night Is The Beginning Of A New Degree

Dr. Michael LaitmanТоrah, Deuteronomy 11:16: Beware, lest your heart be misled, and you turn away and worship strange gods and prostrate yourselves before them. When a person gets another revelation of a new egoism, a new degree, it is always revealed as an evil, in the uncorrected form, because all the degrees are parts of the broken Kli, the vessel of the shattered soul.

The uncorrected state is represented by evening, night, and darkness. Then the day comes, the correction and reception of the Light into the corrected state. Therefore, when a person goes through these states and succeeds in something, a new degree appears in front of him immediately and his egoism tells him, “Well done, you corrected yourself! You can do it alone.”

It turns out that then it is very difficult to adapt to the next degree correctly and start working with it. The “snake,” a person’s “I,” rises in him again, either from a bad or a good side, but always it.

Question: When his “I” manifests in him, can we consider it as a sign of the next degree?

Answer: Naturally, because everything starts with the night, but how hard it is for us to understand that this is a beginning of the next degree.
